I guess staking is something that isn't finished yet.
As I can read in the BlackHalo docs:
Quote
*BlackHalo special features are being added. To name a few we are adding "cold staking" which is the ability to secure the network and gain interest without password protecting your keys. This technique stakes from two locations. We will allow full control over the staking system this way. We are also adding a mining tab for Blackcoins brilliant multipool. This will allow you to make money while your computer runs! Currently its only a few pennies a day however considering how crypto-currency grows, it could be worth 100 times as much within a few years.

Once a transaction has 6 confirmations, it is extremely unlikely that an attacker without at least 50% of the network's computation power would be able to reverse it.

Maybe they're all rushing out to get those buy orders placed before the pre-ICO prices disappear again. Smiley

Hard to believe that there was a big dump while I was sleeping yesterday afternoon... scooped another 300K from 150 down to 120!  The only thing better than waking up to another commitment fulfilled - Congratulations David & BitBay Team - is a decent sized buy which has already gained >80% from when it went through, a few hours earlier.  Grin

(In all seriousness however, I'm sure they're just sleeping... there's probably a little league game that they have to play in this afternoon).

There will be more FUD over the next month... that's to be sure.  In fact, I would actually expect a bit more this time around... after all, there's a big incentive for many traders to try to suppress the price while accumulating.  Just hoping we have a few big spikes in some other coins in the coming weeks so I can transfer some of those profits over to the BUY line for more BAY.

So i've created the 2 private keys and loaded all my coins into my wallet.

Being a noob to crypto and internet security in general, what steps should I take to make sure I never ever lose those coins now?

Should I encrypt something or backup something? I really have no clue!

Thanks!

There's two ways to lose your coins:

- Theft by someone else
- Clumsiness by yourself

I believe the second one is a much more common culprit than the first one. You first need to protect yourself against your own foolishness. Had-drives go corrupt and USB drives get lost very easily.

File>Backup Wallet

Keep that (preferrably in either an encrypted jpeg or in a password encrypted archive or drive) on 3-4 USB sticks.  I usually just burn a copy on a CDR as well, and then keep a copy safe offsite if you really want to avoid disaster losses.

As far as theft losses... preferrably use a dedicated machine (or at least a dedicated installation on a single machine) and never use that OS for anything other than crypto activities.  Biggest threats are backdoors/malware from porn/social media/games/warez etc... at least 9/10 times I hear about someone getting hacked despite "never doing anything wrong" it later comes out that they were infected with something or left RDP open and unsecured or had installed obviously suspicious software on their system.

Regardless of the OS (but this especially applies to Windows) the less software you install on your system, and the fewer places you go on the web... the safer you are.  Obviously this isn't a substitution for hardening/patching an OS to avoid being an easy target - but most of the time, hacking victims have unwittingly invited the thief into their computer...  Undecided

We need to be ready for when Nighttrader launches.

There's not going to be serious merchants waging their business on there at first.  So we need silly offers there first to demonstrate it works. Like offering people a picture of a goose for 1 BAY and setting the smart contract escrow both to 2 BAY and seeing what happens.

This may sound stupid but this is how you grow big. First prove that it works with nothing and then people will start using it for something.

Although important, what's really going to change the tone, both on this thread and in crypto in general (IMO at least) will be when the marketplace itself goes live and we're actually able to start selling (general offers I mean).  Of course, I realize that we can do that now technically via the wallet's contracts, but we have to know the 2nd party ahead of time.

Can't wait to see where this goes during the next year... exciting developments are occurring in numerous areas in crypto... and everything (but especially BAY) is still very much in it's infancy.  This is a very nice wallet, and functional contract platform (much more than other offerings currently) - but it's really only a proof-of-concept delivery.

That's not FUD... I think it's fantastic!  While others are 'developing' prettier presentations... we've got a functional prototype.  I can hardly wait to see what David and the rest of the crew can pull off when they can spend 90% of their time polishing the business model and developing the software - as opposed to 10% developing and 90% babysitting impatient traders who just want to know when they can dump all their holdings for a profit.

I've seen some of the long-winded attempts David has written defending his abilities, motivations, associations, history, relationships, etc... and the fact that he even had a couple hours to work on anything outside of that... pretty much had to mean losing sleep to do it.  If the noise subsided for just a month while they spin up and release the markets... it will be phenomenal!  (But I'll be happy with 'functional' at first, since I'm sure they will be spending a great deal of time babysitting regardless).

I think, that no, because there are no press releases...
very range is perfect - I tested and is remarkable
the price is not important now,
the process and plan is the key, hope the dev can make it clear and smooth.

I heard it many times. When Blackcoin was 20-30-40k after 90k pump they say that to noobs. "Price is not important, just buy more, 1$ soon"  Grin

About Bay I'm afraid that ICO was too expensive, so rising now is not easy.
