 Well that cleared up all of my misconceptions.

 I think your first example might actually be a "kissy" face rather than a "duck" face but there has actually been some research and polls about it and the "duck" face elicits the greatest response from viewers as long as you're looking directly at the camera while doing the duck.

 It's a double entendre.  I was trying to be funny - somehow it generally falls flat.

 Take today for instance; it's Camp Day at Tim Hortons (a coffee/donut shop) where they use the proceeds of the day's coffee/tea sales to send underprivileged children on a multi-day, overnight camp experience.  They also sell bracelets and this year they added socks.  The socks are gaudy - white with bright-red designs on them... what the heck -



 The cashier asked me if I was interested in buying the bracelets for Camp Day and I said I had already purchased several of them so she said, "What about the socks?"  I said, "Hmmm... camp socks.  I don't think I could pull 'em off."

 ...crickets...

 Not even the big dude cashier (sorry, associate) beside her with rainbow fingernail extensions appreciated it.  I'm never giving up though!  Expect it.
