1181  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: ★ VESCUDERO's Risk-free Weekly Term deposits at 1.5% ★ [No availability] on: September 09, 2012, 09:11:42 PM
Admittedly, Im not familiar with CAcert, so I dont know how strong proof that is. The link doesnt mean anything to me, perhaps you can elaborate on that? Other than that, there is nothing that proves his ID.

See http://wiki.cacert.org/FAQ/AssuranceByCAP if that helps you understand how it works. You can also follow the links, and see that an assurer must go through a more thorough ID verification than regular people, as he needs to get more points by more assurers.

Go back in the thread, and you'll also find someone who checked his ID in person at a Spanish bitcoin meeting, as well as links to a colloquium where he spoke, with pictures and all. The PGP key he uses is 18 months old and is signed (which implies photo id verification too) by prominent free software developers, faculty staff, etc.

Except by meeting him in real life and checking his id myself, I could not be more convinced than I currently am that Victor is who he says he is!
Food for thought: do you know who MNW is?

Yeah.... I am starting to be afraid of you people... Cheesy

He didn't take anyone's money..... He played a bad prank and lost a lot of respect.....
Breaking windows is a bad prank which doesn't take people's money. Consider this scenario:
1. Investor sees this thread
2. Investor places bet for 50 BTC
3. Investor buys 60 shares of TYGRR-BOND-P for a total of 6 BTC
4. Matthew reneges on the bet
5. Investor is forced to sell his 60 shares at a loss (probably a loss of about 3 BTC)

At this time I would like to sincerely thank PatrickHarnett. He seems to be the only honest person left on these forums. I requested a withdrawal last night and received it in approximately 12 hours.

In light of the slew of scams recently, I've learned a few things:
  • Don't do anything with BTC that you wouldn't do with cash
  • Just because BTC is designed with the possibility of anonymity doesn't mean that all tx's should be anonymous
  • Leave most of your money in cold storage

Again, thanks to PatrickHarnett for being trustworthy.

Did you contact him ahead of time?  This is not typical (12 hr withdrawal time), as I and others have been waiting for the withdrawals to go through and it is expected to take about a week.
It was small. If you note my post way back in this thread, I keep most of my BTC in cold storage.

If it's any consolation, though: he's stopped accepting deposits, so why return my BTC before he runs? It could have paid for plenty of plane luggage.
I know he won't run Smiley.  He pmed me about his new secret master plan which he will post here shortly (srs).
srs??!! Shocked
1184  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [PENDING] Scammer: Matthew N. Wright on: September 09, 2012, 08:12:05 PM
So if 1 dude fucks up at a Company you crap on the entire company.. That's not fair....
That's part of business. You might not know it, but the better service you have at your local Red Robin affects how much money you spend there and what you tell your friends about it. One waiter is rude, you "crap on" the whole establishment. The company knows this, and will do their best to hire good people and fire bad ones. Perhaps keeping MNW on-board after seeing his juvenile antics was a mistake; the company must absorb the loss from that mistake.

On the other hand, some people were saying that they would buy a magazine as soon as he was fired, because they were only keeping from buying one while he was on-board Wink

"scammed" ... or "Owed a debt that will be chased"?
Nobody has sued or even found pirate, despite the number of people who claimed to know him.
Legal action against Bitcoinica has stalled (??), despite the owners' identities being known.
Nobody has sued Bitfloor, despite the owner's identity being known.

Nobody will sue MNW; nobody will break his legs either, because he's in South Korea.

I guess you are pretty short on BTC now Smiley

Congrats to dust!

Hmm. Now you're making me wonder. My ideology says that a bitcoin-like system is better, due diligence is due, we shouldn't bail out investors by printing money, I shouldn't be forced to pay for other people's ignorance, etc. This slew of scams, however, makes me wonder if people are stupid enough that they need the regulations and consumer protections. Very troubling.

I don't thinks so but you have to realize most consumers have been sheltered by the state protecting them from any possible bad decision on their part for a very long time.   Even CC rules means you can be incredibly stupid and still never lose a single penny.

It will take time and reputation does matter.  Do you think say NewEgg or Amazon would be any more risky paying with Bitcoin instead of CC?  I don't.  Those companies have developed awesome reputation among customers and that is a powerful corporate "asset".  I pick NewEgg over say Tiger Direct even if they are a couple bucks more simply because I have never had a problem with them.  They always meet or exceed my expectations.

Remember Bitcoin is young it is completely different.  It isn't just p2p paypal.  It will take time for the infrastructure to build up around it.
Thank you. As I have lost little to no money in Bitcoinica, Bitfloor, BS&T, MNW's bet, etc, I'm enjoying learning from a more calm perspective. I truly hope this market pulls through and matures.
The title of his bet topic said he'd be giving 100% ROI to people who thought it was a scam. That alone is grounds for making the bet under false pretenses and he should be deemed guilty. I'm sure it would hold up in court.
Playing Asshole's Advocate, nobody gave him any money, and 100% ROI of 0 is 0.

Common sense, however, says that he would be guilty in court.

You are only hearing from the vocal minority on one forum. There are plenty of legitimate Bitcoin transactions between responsible people every day! We simply don't go posting ten threads about every successful transaction on the forums.
And yet, do those legitimate transactions between responsible people total more than the scams? 500K scammed by pirate, some non-zero amount scammed by MNW, 25K lost/scammed in the Bitfloor "hack", 100K+ (?) lost/scammed in the Bitcoinica "hack"...

and not in a single case were there any repercussions.

1193  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Hashkings Lending,Deposit 1.25% INSURED, ALL PPT ACCOUNTS CLOSING ON 8/19 on: September 09, 2012, 05:07:51 PM
He had a trust account so at least 5,000 BTC, probably a lot more - if it was his own money he's free to do with it as he pleases imo (which I know some others don't agree with), he is not free though to risk his own money in such an obviously high risk venture if that portion of it is being used to back guarantees & insurance given against funds loaned to him & he absolutely can not risk any of those said funds with BST, unless he had other liquid assets to pay back in case of a pirate default.
Good point. Money being given to him to back insured PPT's should not go to pirate, except in the case where he has the personal funds to back it should his bet go wrong.

Insurance funds being put into the very asset they are insuring does not pass the giggle test.
1194  Economy / Trading Discussion / Anonymity, the Scam Slew, and AnCap Repercussions on: September 09, 2012, 05:05:19 PM
Bitcoin is pseudonymous. Used correctly, it can be totally anonymous. It must, however, be treated like cash. Cash given to strangers is cash lost. This has been established, yet scams and hacks still occur to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

What troubles me more, is the non-anonymous scammers. Matthew Neal Wright isn't anonymous, is he? In an unregulated market like ours, or in some future AnCap society, what are the repercussions of scams like the one he has just pulled off? There were doubtless many people who used him to hedge their pirate risk, or who bought PPT's at a discount in hopes of turning a profit. For these people, MNW's scam has created a real, tangible loss of thousands of BTC. Now what? He walks away, laughing the whole time? He might not have stolen anything; the situation is closer to him having broken people's windows -- nobody wins but the window mender. When someone you know breaks your window, do they walk away laughing, never to reimburse you?

This troubles me greatly.

Well, thank you for telling us about the "various things" and "alot of factors." I feel so informed. How about a good-faith 1% payment or something, anything.

1. Do you not feel like you are asking too much from a person who just had their operation tear down in front of them?

2. HK could have easily up and run but instead is showing a good-faith effort to pay everyone back.
1. He lied to depositors about risk
2. Pirate made the same amount of effort hashking has.

I'll just write this one off as a loss this week.

I never lied about risk, my statement showed where the funds were going.   Please show where I lied about risk.

This was in the original post.
The funds for the deposits will be used for lending out to other borrowers, investing in more mining equipment, bitcoin projects and other investments offered on the forum
How about "guaranteed" and "withdrawals will be processed in 24 hours"?

With the current situation I will not be able to honor those.  Like I said, I will start making payments on Monday.
And "if I make bad investments I will be able to cover investors with my own money"?
JoelKatz is right, as always. You taking all the risk and a sliver of the profit makes no sense for anybody.

So don't do business with the anonymous? I've bought and sold hundreds of items online (not with Bitcoin) and have never been scammed once.
So, what's the difference? Why all the BTC scams?

Because people voluntarily hand their CASH over to random internet identities.
And they don't do this with non-bitcoin systems? Interesting. I wonder why.

What non-bitcoin cash like systems are there?

Liberty Reserve?  Plenty of the same scams and HYP nonsense around Liberty Reserve.

As long as people will hand scammers giant piles of irreversible cash there will be scammers.  That simple.

I bet there will be a repeat of the pirate-default. A lot of FUD and then nothing.

Exactly. What will happen when Matt doesn't pay? Nothing at all. And THAT is his lesson to the community.
So the lesson is that people can scam this community without fearing any consequences. Shocked

No, the lesson is don't be stupid with your money [...]
... because there are no consequences for scamming.

To hell with your magazine.

Unfortunately, it's not "my magazine". Not sure how many times I'll need to correct that in the future. Please boycott Dove soap since I wash my buttcrack with that Wink
Are you a major representative, shareholder/owner, and/or highly ranked officer in Dove? You've damaged Bitcoin Magazine's reputation to the point that I will never buy a copy; nor will I buy an Ellet. I hope you get fired.
