DarkCoin board initial response to Mr. Spread's idea:

I don't like the idea at all.... Causes more maintenance for. Masternode owners and potential for people to lose their masternode if they can't afford to buy more Spr.  So basically it's forcing ppl to buy more, causing the price to inflate... Ha another circle jerk.  I'll keep my DRK masternodes and not have to worry about buying more unless I want more nodes.

I've been following the Spreadcoin thread since they're looking to compete with Darkcoin and are using Darkcoin code.  While the dev seems very competent, I haven't been worried.  Until now.  Maybe.

It looks like they're going to have the number of coins required for a masternode be determined by market forces: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=715435.msg10076444#msg10076444

Is this a good or bad idea?  If it's a good idea, can we beat them to the punch please and add it to Darkcoin first?

If this is a bad idea, just ignore me Smiley

Exactly jiggytom, fellow darkcoiner, but only for the few DM (decentralized masternode) owners close to the edge, who are in constant danger of being shut down by a new guy who is willing to invest just 1 SPR more than they are, LMAO!

How much are you going to be willing to spend to get to the more cosy center of the spread of DM owners? So that you have atleast a few dozen or hundred DMs "below" you?

Again, the word "spread" fits perfectly.

With darkcoin you build an elitist club of MN (masternode) owners who just sit around lazily watching their masternodes earn DRK, which in turn they use to buy even more masternodes over time.
That's a very dangerous feedback loop, because it doesn't allow for competition. Once you own a masternode it's basically like you've built a money printing machine in fiat banking.
Well, not really ofcourse, it's still a deflationary cryptocurrency,  but I always hated it that Masternode owners are allowed to enter a state of non competition , where they become sort of untouchable ... or - I hate to say it - elitist.

Yes, yes, I understand that masternodes offer a service and should be payed for it. But this kinda reminds me of the police or other government employees, who also argue in the same way for a coercive taxation of the population they are supposed to "serve".

It's just unfair if masternodes are allowed to behave this way. It's so contrary to what everybody else has to endure, especially miners who see their investment vanish away on a daily basis...

This ends with spreadcoin.

If we haven't hit a new all-time high within 30 minutes of this post, I'm taking us there.  I'm giving you guys the opportunity to buy the SPR first.

LMAO. I was happy to help contribute to the (soon to be) new ATM. You take over from here!
1703  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: January 08, 2015, 04:18:21 AM
We need a bigger exchange, dammit...
Not sure if bittrex can handle it...
1704  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: January 08, 2015, 04:11:32 AM
Is the argument for in-wallet encrypted messaging sufficiently compelling to justify the cost of a hard fork and a permanent inflation of the block chain?

Ofcourse not.

But who knows, maybe Mr. Spread has got some sort of craaaazy new fork system in preparation...  Tongue

Not like darkcoin's spork which is the most centralized way of forking thinkable (giving ONE man control over an enforcement mechanism),
imagine what a decentralized forking system would look like.  Huh

My mind is boggling...

All the Decentralization makes my head spin, I need to lie down.
1705  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: January 08, 2015, 04:01:15 AM
Guys i don't mean to ruin your party but wouldn't NOT setting a limit for SPR to have a masternodes be a detriment to the network?

I mean with DRK coin masternodes are easy, you have 1000 coins and you have a masternode, combined with everyone you have a total of say 1500-2000 masternodes on the whole network. With SPR's solution you may have waaaaay less masternodes say if you require 2500+ SPR to be on the masternode list. So what i'm saying is wouldn't there more likely be less masternodes therefore less decentralisation?

I guess there could be a hard limit on minimum and maximum number of masternodes to avoid this?

Please advise if i am way off.

The maximum amount of DM will correlate with the maximum amount of nodes tolerable before the data bloat they create starts messing up the network, AND NOTHING ELSE.
Not sure how this can be detected though...
1706  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: January 08, 2015, 03:33:50 AM
Neither the Trade tab nor the in-wallet encrypted messaging is yet fit to be seen in public so they remain unpublished for the time being ... but gussied-up icons, a diffplot and an IRC chat window are basically just cosmetic (a fork is not required) so if you fancy joining in with the experiment, you can check out and compile the cpuminer1.2.trial branch:

https://github.com/gjhiggins/spreadcoin/tree/cpuminer1.2.trial

Cheers

Graham

Edit: not last, penultimate

Kudos to you working on all this!

@gjhiggins: yeah man, awesome wallet development, keep up the good work. I'll take a closer look.

For me as a software developer / artist, I would love the ability of someone sending me money anonymously, and me sending him information back (e.g. serial number, download link, whatever) to his wallet.
Without him having to give me ANY ADDITIONAL information whatsoever.

Mr.Spread just explained a few posts earlier that this can't work like that, you need to broadcast atleast SOMETHING additional, your address will not suffice.
It can work by broadcasting this additional information but this will require some additional actions from those who will want to receive messages, what you want is simpler though, by signing transaction you make your public key known, this should be enough to encrypt a message. But some people may send you money not from the wallet but from an exchange which will probably just ignore such messages.

Holy mother of spreadonia. I would love if you could make that work, but ofcourse don't let that stand in the way of FC DM development!

Fierce Competition Decentralized Masternodes!

I'll go ALL IN when spreadcoin gets its encrypted in-wallet messaging system. I WANT IT SO MUCH!

Oh? I'd be interested in your use case, i.e. “why?”

"in-wallet messaging system" ? That's so yesterday.

Who needs an in-wallet messaging system when you have DECENTRALIZED MASTERNODES!

just kidding.

Hats off, Mr.Spread.

Not only do you understand decentralization, you also understand the mechanics of a truly free market (which also ties back to decentralization)...

man oh man.

Amount for running masternode hasn't been set yet. It depends on how many masternodes we want which is not yet clear. The more is better for decentralization, on the other hand we need not to bloat the network with masternode related messages. Instead of setting the required amount it may be better to set the maximum number of masternodes and minimum required amount. Once the number of masternodes will reach the maximum only masternodes with maximum deposits will remain and others will be automatically delisted.

So if I understand this idea you're saying "No required amount of SPR is needed, put whatever SPR you believe should be enough to run a masternode into your masternode". So there will be just a few masternodes with like 10,000+ SPR in them and then many many with like 2 or 3 SPR in them and then when we are at what appears to be a maximum amount of masternodes you then 'draw the line' for required SPR based on what is technically needed and then everyone who has more than that amount in their masternode will need to remove their SPR to go down to that requirement and everyone who is short of that amount will need to increase their SPR to meet it?

Sort of like a market-created masternode requirement based on what is technically needed and what the market players are willing to pay.
If I'm anywhere near what you mean, I like it. Not an arbitrary amount (like 1,000 DRK).
JL

If I understood him correctly, when maximum nr of masternodes is reached +1, then the masternode with the fewest coins will shut down, etc... it will need to add additional SPR to its account to continue staying in the game. (But at that point another masternode will be shut down, lol)

Sounds brilliant. Holy shit. What fierce competition this will create...

This reminds me of this game, MUSICAL CHAIRS, with the limited amount of chairs you can sit on, lol....

I'm working on decentralized (no reference nodes) masternodes and instant transactions. I hope that by the end of this month or sooner we will have public testnet with working masternodes and instant transactions, all code will be open sourced by that moment. DarkSend is much more complicated subject, don't expect it soon.

I was thinking about it. The problem is that given only address you can not encrypt message such that only owner of the address will be able to decrypt it, address is only suitable for checking signatures. Thus address owner should broadcast some additional information to be able to receive messages, I believe Bitmessage is working this way so it is possible. Well, as you know, I'm working on other things right now Smiley

Thanks for the update, please keep us posted atleast once or twice a week.

Decentralized Masternodes, I like the sound of that. I also like the abbreviation DM, in contrast to MN... good way to differentiate these two.

Thanks for the explanation regarding the encrypted in-wallet messaging system, it makes sense.

Decentralization is truly the main principle of this coin!
1712  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: January 08, 2015, 02:20:29 AM
other coins which show moneysupply don't even show decimal places, they just round to whole numbers, so I guess spreadcoin wants to show how important decimal places are, since spreadcoin has this continuous reduction in block size.
You can't have that and spit on the decimal places.  Wink
1713  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: January 08, 2015, 02:09:41 AM
When you type getinfo in the console is the money supply correct?

Yes it is. It might confuse people that it has no decimalpoint and is expressed in satoshis.
But it is correct.
1714  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: January 08, 2015, 01:39:55 AM
very strange, price gows despite net hashrate declines  Huh

one or the other (hashrate or price) will always lag behind a little bit.
It doesn't work like a real time feedback loop or something... it's the free market where people react in whatever way they wish, whenever they want. Some sooner some later.
1715  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: January 07, 2015, 10:18:00 PM
Ofcourse, ofcourse,...
Going ALL IN is never wise, no matter how sure you think you are. You need backup plans for when something goes wrong. Hedge accordingly.

But spreadcoin brings back the same feelings I had back in march/april 2014 when I learned about darkcoin.
1716  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][SPR] SpreadCoin | True Decentralization (No Pools) on: January 07, 2015, 10:07:49 PM
Many know me from Darkcoin as a technical analysis guy....Just glanced at SPR's short-term chart on Bittrex.... Short-term moon launch looks imminent.
If we get above .00042, .0005 looks to be a lock and above that I'd expect a fast-trading, high volume, short-term mega-spike (ie who knows how high).

Question for the board, with the current ridiculously low market cap Spread is a bargain. But at what level is it no longer a bargain? $500k $1 mill? $10 mill? And what do you think it takes to reach those levels of a market cap? Masternodes? Instantx? More miners/difficulty?

It all depends on what Mr. Spread implements.

If normal masternodes, this is a mid $xxx, xxx coin.

If IMPROVED masternodes, this is a low to mid $x,xxx, xxx coin.

If he chooses to implement InstantX and BEATS Darkcoin to it, this is a mid to high $x,xxx, xxx coin.

If he chooses to implement Darksend and does a better job than Darkcoin, this is a $xx,xxx, xxx coin.

If he chooses to take another route, then it all depends on what he implements.

Spread is a bargain anytime it is below one of those prices and implementation is imminent or successful.

I'll go ALL IN when spreadcoin gets its encrypted in-wallet messaging system. I WANT IT SO MUCH!

Or longer, since it appears they are focusing on smoothing out Darksend for this next version. I didn't realize he was waiting for instant transactions.

I don't think Mr Spread is necessarily waiting for the Darkcoin team to implement InstantX before he does it himself...

Exactly. I wonder what else Mr.Spread has got up his sleeve.
Some surprises ahead of us.

OOPS, never mind, I found the svg.
You can relax Spreaders, everything is fine.
