1881  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: OTC crypto trades with cash on: July 16, 2019, 03:27:39 AM
Here is a list of alternatives to Localbitcoins (they no longer allow in-person cash trades): https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/b2wj6k/p2p_exchanges_eg_localbitcoins_bisq_hodlhodl/

Most of them don't get anywhere near as much traffic as localbitcoins.
1882  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Fast and anonymous exchange bot on Telegram on: July 16, 2019, 02:44:32 AM

2nd link is broken, I think you meant to link to this Telegram group: https://t.me/megadealschat

I tried the bot, it wouldn't hurt if it was possible to add info about the location for cash trades.
1883  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: So Coinbase & Blockchain.info were the first web-hosted wallet? on: July 15, 2019, 11:15:22 PM
For non-custodial web wallets, blockchain.info was one of the first to market, but the first IIRC was StrongCoin, their announcement thread is here:

1884  Other / Meta / Re: [FARM SUPPRESSION] Clearing the Horde of Spammers on: July 15, 2019, 10:19:11 PM
I'm not sure it's the best of ideas, there is already a problem (maybe not the best word to use since reporting shouldn't be discouraged) with people reporting long buried and forgotten 5-year-old (and older) threads, I assume just to get their reporting accuracy a notch higher, with badges I can foresee mods, especially global mods, being inundated with reports from boards which don't have dedicated mods, or with reports from the altcoin boards.

Maybe it'd make more sense if posts older than x days had 0.1x weight of newer posts, where x is 90, or 7 if it's in an altcoin board. Or something more elaborate.

Go to Preferences and see if the "Edit fees manually" checkbox is checked. How many unspent outputs are you trying to spend?

h promised participants a 100 percent return on their investment after 15 days

Sounds legit.

He also made it clear to the frustrated investors that they were required to upload their personal details to the new site to get paid.

Classic.

The crafty Ponzi operator finally let the cat out of the bag on July 9, 2019, by telling local radio station, Nqubeko FM, that the new Bitcoin Wallet website had suffered a security breach and hackers had succeeded in stealing all investors’ funds.

No surprises here.

I'm quite surprised, though, threats are common if people fall victim to a scam, but it's is usually angry keyboard warriors venting who'll at most report fraud to authorities. I wonder if the house was nice and could perhaps been sold to provide some restitution to the victims.
1887  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [overview] Recover Bitcoin from any old storage format on: July 14, 2019, 06:08:53 PM
Finally I'd recommend never making just 1 backup (this is a single point of failure still), make multiple on cheap USBs for a distributed backup system instead.

It'd also be better to also use more than one type of data storage medium in each location, ideally a combination of USB drives, SSDs, HDDs, M-Disc DVDs, and LTO tapes if you have a tape drive. I would be a little worried if I had to rely solely on flash memory.
1888  Local / Polski / Re: Opera portfel on: July 14, 2019, 01:46:32 PM
1889  Local / Polski / Re: Bitmarket zamknięty bez ostrzeżenia. on: July 14, 2019, 01:13:52 PM

1890  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: stake.com scam on: July 13, 2019, 10:22:52 AM
It might be a good idea for Stake to make a clear recovery procedure and charge a fair fee for the time taken for someone authorized to deal with private keys to safely recover the funds. IIRC Binance charges a 0.01BTC fee to recover to make it worth their time.

And if their setup makes it expensive or time-consuming enough that 0.01 BTC wouldn't cover the costs of recovering the coins they could decide to do recoveries, say, every 3 months, batching them so they could do them in one go once in a quarter.
1891  Other / Meta / Re: help out some sources and source applications THX in advance. on: July 13, 2019, 10:02:43 AM
BTW, if someone always keeps having leftover source merits and not using them up try venturing into other sections once in a while, sometimes interesting threads/posts/discussions can be found.
I would love to be able to distribute more merits amongst the local sections, as I feel they are in general under merited. However, it is incredibly time consuming (and rather headache inducing) to translate entire threads or boards with a machine translator and work through them trying to find a good post or two. I was following cabalism13's thread on unmerited Filipino posts (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5137597.0), but unfortunately it's not been updated in a while. Does anyone know of any other similar threads in other languages?

Sorry, I meant to check out boards or child-boards you don't usually visit, I don't think it makes much sense to visit local language boards if you have to keep using Google Translate (or a similar tool) to understand what people are discussing.
1892  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: SCAM: Bitcoin SV (BSV) - fake team member and plagiarized white paper on: July 13, 2019, 02:42:26 AM
Looks like he's screwed finally with no way to extricate himself out of the trouble he has brought onto himself, unless there're some tricks he can pull off, delays/time wasting, perhaps (?), but that's still delaying the inevitable.
1893  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Livecoin.net Scam on: July 12, 2019, 11:59:18 PM
You mean people don't want to come forward and post about a problem with an exchange that locks your funds for doing so? Shocking!

Yeah because nobody in the history of the forum has ever created a second account  Roll Eyes

They'd find out who's the person behind the account and ban him anyway from their exchange for daring to write about their negative experiences.

Apart from that, I'm strongly inclined to believe that it was mostly through Hhampuz's effort that Livecoin agreed to run a signature campaign here (given how eagerly he tried to fix matters with this foul accusation). So the real question that we should ask ourselves is how come that they discard the forum as irrelevant as far as their reputation is concerned. I think that should be a reality check for us all as to how important BTT is these days

It tells more about their professionalism (or lack thereof) than about bitcointalk itself. Their replies say all.

This particular instance of "wrongdoing" by Livecoin, and its lapses in diligent monitoring still aren't enough for me to deem it a "scam exchange."
I think the label of "scammer" for the Livecoin account is too harsh. Unfavorable Terms of Service - sure. Occasionally irresponsible -- likely. Scammers? No.

Why then has Hhampuz withdrawn his opposition to the flag?
1894  Other / Meta / Re: help out some sources and source applications THX in advance. on: July 12, 2019, 11:37:43 PM
I could also do with some more source merits tbh, I used to have more (250, I think) but I wasn't always using them up so I think that's why it was reduced, and now I'm unable to merit all posts that are worthy of merit (of those that I read through). I noticed I wasn't the only one on the merit source list to be donwgraded.

BTW, if someone always keeps having leftover source merits and not using them up try venturing into other sections once in a while, sometimes interesting threads/posts/discussions can be found.
1895  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Local bitcoin tier verification issue! on: July 12, 2019, 10:14:40 PM
Yeah, I figured if they already had plans to change their verification system, in-person cash trades would be OK again, turns out not necessarily, maybe outside the USA+EU, e.g. in the Philippines as dothebeats is saying.
1896  Other / Meta / Re: [FARM SUPPRESSION] Clearing the Horde of Spammers on: July 12, 2019, 09:57:51 PM
I don't think Mods appreciate reporting long-forgotten posts:

Depends how far back you decide to go, if you see a shitpost on the same page where a discussion is still being held (e.g. not a very active topic, or one revived recently), I don't see any wrong in reporting an older post, as other users visiting or returning to that topic may otherwise waste their time having to skim through the shitpost(s).

Strangely, these posts have been marked as bad. Other high-spam users have also been cleared for similar posts.

These posts are shit, but they're borderline cases, so you might not necessarily see them removed.
1897  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Local bitcoin tier verification issue! on: July 12, 2019, 09:18:59 PM
1. I don't think that there is even an option for in person cash trades anymore on localbitcoins. If you click on "post a trade" you'll be greeted with 2 options only, none of which is cash-related:

Weren't they supposed to re-introduce in-person cash trades after having revamped their verification system? It would suck if they weren't to return, that was the whole point of using localbitcoins. I'll find my login info to check if it works.

edit: I see only online ads in my country, nothing has changed for the better since the cash ads were removed
1898  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [overview] Recover Bitcoin from any old storage format on: July 12, 2019, 08:44:16 PM
What IF:

- I keep all the backup in a USB drive (removable media) or an external hard drive that goes either broken or completely corrupt?

- As some of the USB drives have their own security system software installed, I wish to know are these softwares actually trustworthy to be kept in it (like to add a password to password-protect it to secure our USB drive and/or even external hard drive)?

1. There are data recovery companies that may assist you with that. No guarantees, though.

2. Use tested open source solutions such VeraCrypt or LUKS.
1899  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Tips for local transactions on: July 12, 2019, 07:29:50 PM
Guys.. how can you be sure the pruduct seller dont run away just after you transferred your BTC to hes Bitcoin Adress?

You should count the money and verify its authenticity (within the means you have at the given time and place) before sending the coins. Until the transaction has been confirmed the money should be within your reach lying on a table, and you should be able to quickly get up should a need arise. Of course, meet in safe public areas to ensure the other party can't pull any tricks even if they wanted to.
1900  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Local bitcoin tier verification issue! on: July 12, 2019, 06:40:09 PM
Is there any way to get around the bank statement? Some other document? What if someone lives mostly off-the-grid and only does in-person cash trades?

OP, if you don't mind, could you post the list of documents required for Tier 2 verification? They have a checklist here: https://localbitcoins.com/blog/id-verification-update/ but it's pretty vague, some items seem redundant on that list.
