2321  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: January 26, 2021, 10:59:47 AM
If Saha is playing then may be 4 bowlers-6 batsmen combination. If not then Pant will keep the gloves, in that case we could expect 5 bowler combination, which is very handy in subcontinent and India never play with more than 6 specialist batsmen when in India.

I have a feeling that 5 bowlers may be needed. Indian tracks are quite flat and with Joe Root in excellent form, we can expect England to bat for more than 100 overs in each innings. The pace bowlers may get tired in the hot and humid conditions and therefore the spinners are expected to share most of the workload. Going with Ashwin/Sundar/Kuldeep seems to be a good option.
2322  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If Bitcoin had a Billion Max supply instead of 21 million.... on: January 26, 2021, 05:22:32 AM
I think the marketcap would be lower than the current one, because a billion of coins would be perceived as less scarce than the current max supply, even if in both cases the supply is limited. On the other hand, having lower total supply could also have negative effects, if it was too scarce, like let's say 10,000 bitcoins, it would be viewed more as a collectible rather than a currency or a store of value.

I don't think that it is going to make much of a difference. Bitcoin is infinitely divisible, and therefore the total supply doesn't matter much. Whether the total supply is 21 million or 1 billion, the market cap is going to be the same. You can argue that Bitcoin may be regarded as less scarce and therefore the demand will go down. But there is a counter argument as well. Right now the unit price is quite high compared to other cryptos and a lot of noobs are reluctant to invest in Bitcoin as a result. IMO, both the factors should neutralize each other.
2323  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Another billionaire just invested in bitcoin on: January 26, 2021, 05:10:00 AM
It is definitely good news, but the impact on the market will be quite limited. Let's not forget the fact that Bitcoin is now having a market cap of >$600 billion. Endorsements from individuals doesn't make any reverberation now. What we need is collaboration with mainstream investment/payment businesses such as PayPal, Master and Visa. Any additional endorsements from these mainstream businesses will be good for BTC.
2324  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: January 26, 2021, 04:59:39 AM
BCCI only discussed about 10 teams IPL in recent meeting so yeah increasing overseas players in playing squad proposal is in cold bag for good. Guess they are not interested in this idea.

Bravo recent decline is because of fitness so its understandable. Tahir is old but he's very much fit to play in T-20 format.

The rumor is that the IPL 2022 will be a 9 team affair.

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/ipl/top-stories/bcci-likely-to-add-only-one-ipl-franchise-for-now-industry-backs-move/articleshow/80321379.cms

Quote
The BCCI may restrict the Indian Premier League (IPL) to only nine teams for now, apropos of the general body "approving" the ITTs (Invitation To Tender) for two new franchises. In the BCCI's Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Ahmedabad last month, the members had given approval to the inclusion of two new franchises in the IPL.

And regarding Tahir, I agree that he is one of the good options available for CSK. But with a limit of 4 overseas players, CSK will try their best to include Indian spinners in their lineup (if they get some good purchases during next month's auction). Tahir didn't played much in IPL 2020 (he was included in the playing XI for just 3 matches) and that indicates what the team management thinks about him.
2325  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-01-20] Janet Yellen suggests 'curtailing' cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin on: January 26, 2021, 04:48:40 AM
Exactly. Say whatever you want about Trump. Even thought Trump wasn't really a crypto fan at least he wasn't talking about "curtailing" it because he simply didn't care about it.

No matter who is in charge one thing is not going to change. No country in its right mind would give up on its national currency and use something else which they have no control on. (That's right I am looking at you Europe.)

Whoever controls the money, also controls the country.

If the US Dollar gets devalued, then the population may be tempted to use other options, such as bullion or Bitcoin. The M1 monetary supply for US Dollar has gone up by almost 100% in 2020 alone, and 2021 may be even worse as a result of all the stimulus measures announced by Biden. It is actually good news for Bitcoin. But the question is whether the government will allow free competition or not.
2326  Economy / Economics / Re: Vaccination Started in India | Impact over Indian Economy & World? on: January 26, 2021, 04:38:09 AM
Vaccination starting in various places is an hope that the world might healed soon. And if this really works, would economy won't really have to be shut down again. The effect of the last lock down is still felt on our economies all around the world and most especially in the third world countries.

Vaccination was started more than a month back, and so far just 68.1 million doses have been administered. Considering the fact that you need two doses per person, a total of 15 billion is needed to inoculate the global population. Even for herd immunity, at least 30% of the population needs to be immune. Unless the manufacturing and distribution is stepped up by a factor of 10 or more, I don't have much hopes for this year.
2327  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2021-01-20] Janet Yellen suggests 'curtailing' cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin on: January 25, 2021, 08:00:28 AM
I think the solution here can be very simple. I suggest curtailing Janet Yellen  Smiley

Voters had the chance to do that three months back, but they voted for her. Now we have to deal with her for at least 4 years. And the situation is much more complex now, due to the trifecta power that the Democrats enjoy. The GOP was never considered as pro-Bitcoin, but at least when compared to the Democrats, they left the cryptocurrency market on its own without much intervention. That is going to change now.
2328  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why You Should Not Buy Bitcoin with PayPal on: January 25, 2021, 07:50:02 AM
For the vast majority of the experienced users out here, purchasing Bitcoin through PayPal makes no sense (unless they make more functions available, such as making payments with Bitcoin). But there are millions of not-so tech savvy people out there, who would rejoice at such an opportunity. These people usually have a hard time in purchasing BTC from the exchanges and then storing it themselves.
2329  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Trump Pardons on: January 25, 2021, 07:20:37 AM

So that probably means that Ulbricht will stay behind bars for the rest of his life. Assange/Snowden still have some chance as there are enough mainstream politicians showing their sympathy towards them. Ulbricht's case is different and Trump was probably the only one who could have considered to pardon him. Feels bad, because he's in his 30s and unlike Assange or Snowden, people seems to have completely forgotten his case.
2330  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do not be too happy on: January 25, 2021, 07:10:32 AM
Do not be too happy that big and giant companies are entering the field…
Because they set the price up and down whenever they want…
You should be happy when ordinary people invest more than big companies.
In simpler terms, it is much better if bitcoin or anything else that exists is distributed all over the world and reaches individuals and companies equally, or, as the saying goes, does not accumulate together.
Wherever governments or large corporations stand, they are sure to determine everything.
Successful and healthy  Wink

Can't agree with this claim. The price of a decentralized asset can't be controlled by a handful of players. There are more than 18 million coins floating around and in order to manipulate the price, these guys need to accumulate at least 30%-40% of the circulating supply. And if they try anything like that, then the prices will end up at six digits (or much beyond that).
2331  Economy / Economics / Re: Florida bank says it has closed Trump's accounts on: January 25, 2021, 07:03:35 AM
For sure he could've channelled specific sum of amount to his friends and family accounts. By profession he's a businessman and he has good number of luxury hotels and other buildings. So he can easily complete his debt selling those. He's one of a kind who has a different perspective about things when majority have similar opinion.

When people are ready to donate money, why he should spend his personal wealth? Even during his 2020 campaign, if I am not wrong he didn't spend any of his own money. And according to Forbes, his current wealth is measured at $3.1 billion. He can easily wipe out the debt with some of his personal wealth, but I guess he is not stupid to do that. Anyway, most of that wealth is not in liquid form.
2332  Economy / Economics / Re: The sale of the COVID-19 vaccine on the dark web continues. on: January 25, 2021, 06:47:14 AM
I'm pro on vaccines, but I would never put anything in my body bought from the Darknet. I'm in the loss risk Coronavirus group, and I'm sure that some unknown substance is riskier than the virus itself.

It has nothing to do with whether you are pro-vaccination or anti-vaccination. No one should purchase vaccines from unreliable sources, even if they are pro-vaccination. Everyone needs to wait for their turn, even if it means going without vaccination for 6 months or more. And who knows? Waiting for sometime for getting inoculated may prove to be beneficial in the end.
2333  Economy / Economics / Re: Vaccination Started in India | Impact over Indian Economy & World? on: January 25, 2021, 06:24:59 AM
To be sincere, I am not positive  about this vaccination thing because of the potential side effect and also this is just a money grab by some of these pharmaceutical companies. There are a lot about Covid that people do not know, the political, social, economical and the health side of it. Good that people can go on now with their normal way of life

Everyone is talking about side effects, but do we have any concrete proof for the same? There are some unsubstantiated rumors regarding people dying from vaccination, but there no concrete proof has been submitted so far. And till date, a total of 65 million individuals have undergone vaccination and there are no reports of large number of people suffering from serious side effects.
2334  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Toronto women win jackpot lottery on: January 25, 2021, 05:58:15 AM
It is also called a gambler's fallacy, it is a type of fallacy where the people believe that streaks of unfortunate events or losses is just a road paved for an eventual success. I want to know how much money in total have they used for lottery tickets over the course of 20 years together with the inflation. I am pretty that it is a lot of money too. I hope that they wouldn't squander it on luxuries and other ephemeral things because that is a lot of money.

What about those guys who have spent a fortune on lottery tickets during the last 20-30 years and yet to win any sizeable reward? The individual mentioned here at least got lucky after trying for many decades. But we should not forget the fact that for every such individual, there are dozens out there who never get lucky. They spend all their savings on lottery tickets, only to end up broke.
2335  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Thailand government seeks measures to tackle the problems of illegal gambling. on: January 25, 2021, 05:34:10 AM
I agree with the Thai government if it is proven that illegal gambling is one of the causes of the spread of the corona virus. But it is not enough
to close all illegal casinos in Thailand, because surely the Thai population who is addicted to gambling will look for ways to keep playing gambling
in secret. Why not give education to play online gambling, because it is proven that online gambling can prevent the spread of the corona virus.

There is only one real solution for illegal gambling. And that solution is to legalize all gambling activity. Prohibiting gambling, porn.etc reminds me of the dark ages. We are living in 21st century and the government should not decide on what forms of entertainment is permitted and what are not. Banning the casinos will only result in pushing it underground and handing over control to the criminal gangs.
2336  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: People die from heart attack when they hit the jackpot. on: January 25, 2021, 05:23:37 AM
This is both lucky and unlucky man, if you are going to win such amount I really think you wouldn't control your excitement well that's really unfortunate for the people who died after they hit a jackpot. At least they experienced the taste of winning a jackpot.

Tens of thousands of people have won jackpots till now. Out of that one or two might have died of the shock of becoming millionaires overnight. The probability, I would say is less than someone getting struck with the lightning bolt. Anyway, I have one question. If people really don't expect to win the jackpot, then why do they purchase these lottery tickets?
2337  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Indian Super League (ISL) Football match updates, predictions and discussions on: January 24, 2021, 05:14:42 PM
If the ISL matches were exciting, the growth of the spectators would have increased even more. But ISL's matches are not exciting. Mumbai is at the top of the points table with 29 points from 12 matches. On the other hand, Goa, which is in third place, has managed to score 20 points in 13 matches. If ISL had been as competitive and exciting as the Premier League, ISL's audience growth would have been even greater.

ISL has failed to give enough boost to football, to make it the second most popular sport in India (cricket is at number one, and I don't think that any other sport can give a meaningful competition there). Even now, the PKL (Pro Kabaddi)TV ratings are more than that of ISL. The Hockey India League (HIL) was discontinued in 2017, else it would have given challenge to ISL as well.
2338  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: January 24, 2021, 04:54:18 PM
Don't know if they strategically schedule Sri Lanka series or not but yeah it was good move from the ECB.  . Srilankan were having hard time restricting Joe Root. I am hoping that Joe Root already ran out of all juice after 2 big tons Cheesy otherwise he's going to be a big problem. Their opening pair is looking very bad atm but they have at least 5-6 fine match winners.

Anderson - Broad duo is good but IMO more focus should be on their spin department, especially Moin Ali.

The English batsmen seems to be having issues against Sri Lankan spinners. Lasith Embuldeniya has so far picked up 7 wickets (he may end up with 8 ). Joe Root was exceptional, but hardly anyone else contributed with the bat. Their opening pair looks like the most vulnerable (Zak Crawley and Dom Sibley). I know that Crawley hit 267 against Pakistan. But if you take out that score, his test career would look pathetic.
2339  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: January 24, 2021, 04:44:39 PM
Gaikwad made couple of 50s for them at the top orders so i don't think they are going to bench him. He should get at least 2-3 games but if he fails then may be Sam Curran could replace him or Roy if CSK buy him.

Then again you need 4 overseas players. Chawla and Bajji are not there so i am not sure if they going to opt for 2 overseas opener (Faf-Roy). Faf,Curran and Bravo(if he's fit) seems fix. They should go with the another overseas bowler in the squad, on spin track Tahir/Satner and on fast may be Hazelwood/Ngidi.

Last year, there were some rumors regarding the increase in limit for overseas players from 4 to 5. But I haven't heard anything on that subject recently and it looks like the limit is going to stay at 4. I agree that du Plessis and Curran seems to be permanent fixtures. But I am not that sure about Bravo. His form has declined recently and he has gone through serious injuries. Gaikwad may get a couple of outings, but if he fails to perform, then he'll be dropped. Tahir is around 42 years old, and I am not sure whether he'll be fit enough for IPL 2021. For the pace department, they have promising Indian players such as Shardul, KM Asif and Deepak Chahar. For spin also, they have Jadeja and Karn Sharma. They may need only one overseas player for the bowling department.

The clear picture will be available only after February 11th, after the auctions.
2340  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Another insane win!! $ 1B mega million jackpot on: January 24, 2021, 04:34:23 PM
Lucky indeed in gambling, winning that billion is okay but the way the taxers takes almost half of his winnings is not okay, even if his identity not revealed in the process.

Damn taxes.

They have kept double taxation and a very high rate of tax deduction because they know that no one is going to complain about it. No one is going to complain about the tax on lottery tickets, because their concentration is on winning the reward of $1 billion. It is not going to matter much, if the price of the ticket is increased from $8 to $10. And if someone wins the jackpot, he will be overjoyed that he became a multi-millionaire overnight. The winner is not going to sue the government claiming that the tax rate is too high.
