But are bitcoins really ever created, past the first time the network got online? The way i see it Satoshi Nakamoto is the only person (or group) in the world to have ever created bitcoins, all 21billion of them...
402  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Instawallet/Bitcoin-Central Security Breach on: April 02, 2013, 02:19:30 AM
If you put password in URL on your website, it is not Googles fault. It would be your and your only your complete and grossly negligible disregard of most trivial best practices in information security.

Do not blame Google it is not their fault.

I find it hard to believe that 3000+ instawallets were posted on the web.  Maybe a dozen, maybe even 10 dozen, but 3,000?

1) How many people created instawallets?
2) Out of those, how many actually used those instawallets?
3) Out of those, how many still hold balances in instawallets?
4) Out of those, how many decided it was a good idea to post their instawallet URL's on the web somewhere, despite the huge red warning against doing so?

I just don't see 3,000 as coming solely from URLs that people have posted online.  As someone else mentioned, I believe Google also gathers information about websites based on what people access through their browser or other services.  If the URL might exist, Google crawls it to find out.
If i'm not mistaken, unless you remember the https part Chrome will send whatever you put on the URL bar to Google's databases.

How about that -rescan commandline option? Could that be of help for him?
404  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Transaction with ZERO confirmations after over 2 HOURS on: April 02, 2013, 01:11:55 AM
Bump...5 hours and blockchain has no record of the transaction: http://blockchain.info/search/2176854c0ed2e2a8e6c2f4aeb429e4548452ba59088cc63ff36634cdeae062a4
do you have a old backup of your wallet? you can try to replace the new with old and retry.
Make a backup of your newer wallet just in case; and make sure there is nothing missing when you load the old wallet.
405  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Instawallet/Bitcoin-Central Security Breach on: April 02, 2013, 12:56:14 AM
Vladimir: +1.

And while the way Instawallet work is not security-by-design, then doing a "site:"-search is not a security flaw - as long as Instawallet didn't leak the url's.

Injust: Just to make sure; you do know that google didn't "magically" find these urls, right? And Instawallet didn't leak them. (Also, 2+2 is not equal 5). If it wasn't Instawallet and google can't do magic, who do you think leaked them? Shocked

Um...Instawallet essentially leaked them. Not actively, but passively.
Because they failed to secure the site so that robots couldn't crawl and discover the URLs.
It is my understanding the site wasn't crawled, Google simply recorded the URLs people typed/pasted on the URL bar of their browser or in one of their many services and programs.

But if having a bigger HDD means you earn more, wouldn't that also lead to a spontaneous symmetry break where whoever gets enough of an advantage first becomes able to increase their own advantage exponentially faster than anyone else and eventually will hoard the equivalent of 51% of the storage space of the network?

... and I would introduce a law (putting as part of my campaign whilst getting voted in) that would raise minimum wage by add a chunk to be a better representative of a % of the PROFIT of the company. ...

...

You need to make that GROSS PROFIT, otherwise companies will start using Hollywood accounting to claim they are loosing money while still getting richer.
410  Economy / Gambling / Re: Can you guess the Bitcoin Price on 3/31/13?? on: March 25, 2013, 01:31:44 AM
Multiples of 0.001? Is it 0.01 or 0.001?

you can't have multiples of .001 we're supposed to be guessing the value of 1 btc in usd. it is impossible to have a value that is a fraction of 1 cent.
If you're buying multiples of an unity, you can have prices like that.

And there is no 1Watt miner out there?

there probably will be soon. but are you seriously worried about 1 or 2 watts on your electric bill??
1 watts on the electric bill is always more expensive than 1 watt on the phone line...

Could it be Gallium?

413  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Can some sort of miner be run with the phone line's power, not making it "busy"? on: March 24, 2013, 05:44:36 AM
There is usually a small amount of electricity provided by the phone line itself, but it is very low current and highly illegal to tap for non-phone purposes. You'd be lucky if you could draw more than 1-2 watts before the voltage sagged to unusable levels or blows a fuse somewhere.
And there is no 1Watt miner out there?

And why exactly is it illegal? What is the harm if they are sending that electricity anyway?
414  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Can some sort of miner be run with the phone line's power, not making it "busy"? on: March 24, 2013, 05:40:42 AM
First I ever heard of this. So in Brazil, you guys all have a sort of "POE" (power over ethernet) but for your phones? So you don't have to plug any of your phones into outlets?
You guys must have pretty thick phone cables.
It is my understanding the landlines have a small bit of power even when the phone is on the hook (some phones even take advantage of that to do things like backlight on the keys, show the time, allow management of a simple contacts book etc while plugged but with the phone on the hook). It is certainly not as powerful and reliable as regular powerlines, but there is some energy in there. The characteristics of the electricity change when you connect a call, when the phone is ringing etc; these variations and pulses need to be taken in consideration.

Ah, and if i'm not mistaken there is even some house alarm systems that monitor the landline and trigger the alarm if the line ever goes dead; since it is supposed to have some energy in it pretty much the whole time, if it goes dead it means someone cut the line.
415  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Can some sort of miner be run with the phone line's power, not making it "busy"? on: March 24, 2013, 05:01:51 AM
(I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, i only got a superficial knowledge on most things involved.)

Is there some sort of mining rig that can run out of the power from a phoneline (either directly hooked or thru some sort of adapter/transformer/wallwart thingy etc), without the phone company considering the line to be "busy" while the device is plugged and sucking energy (in other words, not preventing the phone from ringing if called nor preventing outgoing calls)?

Obviously this wouldn't be very competitive, probably even less powerful than GPUs, but since the electricity coming thru the phone line is unmetered, if it doesn't interfere with regular usage of the phone line for making and receiving calls then that's pretty much free eletricity, and free electricity + mining rig = free money (though in this case it might be just a trickle of money, still free though). But since it is quite weak, the best way to go with this would be to join a pool, obviously.

ps: I live in Brazil, most specificly São Paulo. I'm not sure if that makes much a difference, but i have the impression the landline standards and protocols might be a bit different in different parts of the world; keep that in mind.

ps2: oh, and another requirement is there must be no significant noise added into the phone line, there is a ADSL service being offered in these parts and i wouldn't want them to trace the noise to my house...
416  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How to remove my mark at TradeBitcoin.com without having a third-party account? on: March 23, 2013, 11:06:01 PM
From what i remember, back when i put my marker there, they had their own account system, with the third-party stuff being optional; but recently with the rise of the Bitcoin price i've started getting some calls about my marker there, but now i'm more interested in buying  than selling, and i could swear i had already deleted my marker there a long time ago. But now i can't log in there since i don't have an account with Twitter, nor Facebook, nor Google Apps for Busyness, nor OpenID.

How can i get my marker there deleted?

ps: in my marker there is my phone number from some time ago, but due to a shortage of numbers the operators added an extra 9 for every mobile number in the area so it won't be a perfect match on a called ID; and i obfusctated my skype username there to avoid spambots acquiring it from the map (but the instructions on how to get the correct skype username are clearly spelled out in obfuscation, any human should be able to understand what my real skype username is). If there is some human that works there i could talk with, perhaps it might be easy to solve this...
417  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Islamic Bank of Bitcoin{}بنك بتكوين الاسلامي on: December 02, 2012, 12:35:43 AM
yeah me too , the second email from crypto explained how to reset , you have to logout first and then "forgot my password"

Apologies, we send out the email account activation first and then the instruction about resetting it later, should have been the other way round obviously.

For those who haven't activated their email yet:   After clicking the activation link in the email  (didn't receive that email? Please check your Spam folder)   you will be automatically logged in.  You will need to logout, then go to the login screen, there is a link at the bottom which says: "Forgot your password"?   This will then email you an instruction on how to reset the password.

Obviously you can always change your password once you are logged in via the menu "Account"->"Reset Password" but you need to know your old password in order to do that, which you don't have the very first time, hence the process via the "Forgot your password" function.

Perhaps you guys should tweak your system a bit so that those random passwords no one knows are considered temporary, and different from a password someone would set the normal way; and whenever someone with such a password tries to access the site they are reminded to set their own password (including a link to do so without having to manually log off and hit the forgot password thingy)?

Just received an email, did a pw reset to my email, logged into crypto and I see my one IBB share!

Thanx, for some reason i had forgoten about the password reset thingy and was struggling to figure out how to set my own password there without knowing the current password Tongue

ps:was this the thread you wanted me to post the pic on?
420  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The flaw of Bitcoin economic/security model. on: August 02, 2012, 04:12:23 PM
...

So the flaw is that the incentive to steal emerge the moment a business finds it self in a situation where a theft would earn more money than any possible future profit...

...

Actually, it starts way before that; studies have shown that humans have a tendency of preferring smaller short-term gains over larger long-term ones.
