481  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: April 03, 2014, 02:25:01 PM
There are many merits and failings of both brain wallets and desktop wallets. To be honest, I think it's just a matter of personal preference...

It's an interesting discussion, but I think it's pretty much a finality that NEM will be using a desktop wallet system. A poll on the forum a while back, plus a general browse on forums, shows that desktop wallets are preferred by the vast majority of people.

Perhaps the fact that this discussion is happening indicates that a new wallet system is needed, a hybrid of brain and desktop wallets. Perhaps something for the NEM developers to think about in the future?

I'm not one for online wallets to be honest. In fact i'm not one for anything "online" based as i feel i have far less control over the security of whatever it is in question (Whether that be software or, in this case, currency)

A hybrid would be ideal. This to me was the biggest downfall of NXT as online storage has more cons than pro's.

Offspring for Nxt (Win/Mac/Linux) supports local wallets, I believe:

https://github.com/incentivetoken/offspring

True. You can save your coins on your PC with offspring.

At its core, NXT is using a brain wallet. I'm not sure how you can save coins to your PC, unless you are referring to backing up the pass-phrase? Even so, it seems like they could still be unlocked by the network. Or am I missing something?

You know BTC is a brain wallet too right? The wallet of the QT is just a clientside implemention...

The more you know Wink

I am not the tech guy but I think you are mistaken. Private-public key design is different from brain wallet design.

I was advised by my cousin that told me how to get signed up for this NEM currency that I should go online and I should go on this board and that I should post in this thread if I wanted to keep my place in line for this IPO or else someone would steal it from me.  Why would this happen?

This is not an IPO. You are expected to contribute so you might not be suitable if you are new to the crypto scene.

3 months ago, a mysterious women asked me to start a New Economy Movement. She said her previous idea has no more hope. I can't help but obeying.
484  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: March 31, 2014, 08:26:47 PM
Yes things seem to be moving forward. As to talk of exchanges, it's incredibly difficult in the UK. There is Coinfloor that is on the go. Its registered with HMRC as a Bureau de Change however this means nothing. The owners had dealings with GLBSE that scammed $$$$$ and they operate out of a post box in London !
I am not slinging mud around but all i ask is that we use full due diligence when indeed the time comes to list on an exchange after all this is our NEM.  Smiley

I agree.
485  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: March 31, 2014, 07:50:35 PM
I think we have a big chance to reproduce (or even surpass) NXT initial success

Nxt small number of stakeholder turned out to be advantage in manipulating prices (in nxt favor), as number of coins in circulation (on exchanges)  is lower than it could have been with wider initial distribution. Add the fact that there are 4 times more Nem (and many more people will be trading on exchanges)  I am not entirely sure how high would one Nem go. Plus things have changed with all crappy altcoins around. People are burnt out with buying alt clones then prices go down as developers dump big amount after initial pump.

We will see how it goes, but I am keeping expectations low.

I would be cautiously optimistic. Hopefully, Bitcoin and general crypto scene would be in a better state than it is now when we launch.

How will the formal announcement be made? I'm not on the Forum as much as I used to be and want to make sure I don't miss it. Is there any way that you could send a notice via Forum PM or email?

Development update:

The development contract announcement will be delayed. My plan is to have the announcement when we have a clear road map of NEM development going forward and preferably within 1-2 weeks of the alpha launch. Unfortunately, at this point we don't have an ETA for the alpha launch yet and consequently, the formal announcement is delayed. My guesstimate of the Alpha is still on later part of April but there are quite a few things that needs to be worked on before we can make a solid ETA.

We currently have two repo, one for NEM infrastructure codes and one for NEM client codes and quite a few other concurrent projects going on. Progress is made on daily basis and team-quality wise I think we are as strong as Ethereum group except that NEM team and development are still in a stealthy mode.

NEM client would be called NEM community client (NCC) and here is NCC specification written by Thies1965. Feel free to comment on it.

I hope you like what NCC will look like in the future. Let me know if you are a developer and interested in working on expanding NEM ecosystem. I have some ideas about the future direction of NEM that I could share and I am very excited about it. Thanks.

Bookmark the first page of this thread and/or NEM Facebook and/or ournem.com and/or NEM reddit and check one of these sources at least one a week. The announcement will be featured in all of these at least 2 weeks before the official launch.

I'm starting to think the NEM community is in a unique position that no other coin is or was ever in.  If the source code isn't released, do exchanges need the development team's permission to add NEM to their exchange?  If so, I think exchanges will be knocking down our door instead of the other way around. Yes?

Exchanges do not need the source codes, just the API to add new crypto. NEM API as well as wallet would certainly open to exchanges to test out.

I'm selling my stake for 1 bitcoin. If you're interested in purchasing my stake, (includes my alt account with password) pm me. Escrow is accepted. I will send first to members here with a good reputation.

Note: The stake was paid with my alt account. The account is listed on the approved stakeholders list. You will also be able to verify the stake payment by checking post history to see the transaction.

There is no approved stakeholders list yet.
489  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] ---NEM stake complaint, questions etc.--- on: March 30, 2014, 05:35:03 PM
Any reason I am not included in the list of stakeholders? I can't see my name there. I was an early contributor to the project. My donation was here:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=422129.msg4656829#msg4656829

Srsly have you guys flocked together to annoy me  Grin?

You are also on the list. Please use CTRL+F and notice the tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet.
Hah thanks and thanks for your snark. Maybe, if you take money from the community, the least you could do is put this on the OP to make your unintuitive setup clear to everyone instead of expecting everyone to wade through hundreds of pages?

We are asking people to participate. You can always take your money back if you don't feel like you can contribute.

@ devs..

will nem be turing complete or have automated transactions? i think this is a vital feature for 2nd gen coins!

bump!

utopianfuture or patmast3r

can either of you answer? if you want to compete with nxt then you will need this.. otherwise you will only ever be 2nd to nxt..

Too many hype floating around. Why do you think Turing complete/ automated transaction is vital ? We don't have these but we might have automaton script that can do all the same plus creating shopping list + match making for singles in a close proximity.

Quote from: zeronominal

"There seem to be two proposals, neither of which seem like particularly good ideas:

1) Proposal for hybrid POS/PON: Non-linear proof of stake rewards. Rewards are effectively per account up to a threshold. Seems ripe for exploitation by botnets.
2) Proposal for POI: Seems to be the Google Page Rank algorithm (i.e. Principal Components) with transactions replacing links between webpages, and the sum of coin ages replacing the content quality measure (i.e. the prior distribution over nodes). Seems equally vulnerable to exploitation by botnets. (Suppose there are N legitimate nodes, all trading, N botnet nodes, not trading, and 1 master node for the botnet. The botnet nodes have arbitrarily old coins so receive substantial weight, despite their lack of any trading except with the master. All of this weight then flows to the 1 master node for the botnet, who must then get the highest "PageRank" in the network.) In any case, rewarding old coins is the opposite of what you want to do. The existence of old coins implies that the currency isn't actually being used! By rewarding old coins you're effectively taxing transactions, which imposes a large efficiency cost."

Hmm, could our dev take a look at this subject?

I would not answer in any detail about this because the algorithm is under refinement. Comments are welcomed AFTER the white paper is published.

Will there be an announcement today. I think a lot of people would like to know?

Yes, there will be an update today or tomorrow.

Okay, here is the thing --

1. It is utopianfuture's policy not to reply anyone in PM.

2. I have concrete evidence that would lead to discover of big multi-accounters. However, it would require some investigative work. I cannot do it alone so I am asking for help.

3. I have some of sellingallmynem's accounts. By tracing them and combining what he told me during our course of conversation, I was able to discover his identity.

4. Has anyone considered the possibility that what I'm telling you is the truth? So nobody cared? So be it.

I reply to a lot of PM but I don't deal with stake issue via PM. I suggest you to publish all of your finding in the stake complaint thread. Everyone including me could use your finding if they are useful and at the same time can validate the contents of your finding.

I don't see the need to form a NEM KGB to deal with your concern (or any other one for that matter).
495  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: March 26, 2014, 08:01:10 AM
For the record, I like the community as it is. Since it has a uniquely wide breadth and depth even at this stage and I expect amazing things from the community when the time comes.

So I see there is no real issue with NEM community (and surely only imaginary fiasco). Thank you all for your supports.
496  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NEM] NEM -New Economy Movement - No Envy Movement - Updates+Discussion thread on: March 26, 2014, 12:38:41 AM
well, it is still 60 days of Nxt IPO against 30 days of NEM, so you can count it also: 2:1

NEM waiting list is still going on.
497  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: AURORA "airdrop" - before and after March 25 on: March 25, 2014, 12:08:44 PM
How do they check if the people come from iceland?

They combine each person ID number + name (Iceland have public data base of the people) with that person's Facebook account (almost everyone in Iceland have Facebook account)

How do you know they do that? Are the processes documented somewhere ?

Im not Icelandian so I cant know exactly how they do it, but its on the web and forums...
there is a counter at auroracoin.org and the wallets of the premined coins are disclosed

My question is more like how does the public know they distribute to Icelander not to themself in the name of Icelander?

Im not sure I understand
If you ask how do we know that he is not distributing it to himself, I guess we can see the addresses; but its going to end up with trust as we cant expect the people to identify in public for claiming the coins. No one will claim at this situation

So you trust an anonymous person to give away millions of $ to also a bunch of anonymous people but not himself and friends.

To me the latter is more like what is happening unless it is proven otherwise.

Now take a look at Mr. zanzibar profile https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=218947. Did he say he had 12.000 BTC when btc was 10 cent? So what is more probable.

1. Mr. zanzibar cared so much about NEM to buy about 25 stakes and now he somewhat changed his mind and decided to defame NEM ?
2. Mr. zanzibar is a big NXT whale and the whose intention of his post here is defame NEM to protect his interest.

We should thanks Mr.zanzibar to courageously use your somewhat normal account to spread lies about NEM. Perhaps you think that will give more weight to your post? It would be harder for me to make the same point if you create a newbie account for your purpose instead.
