681  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Quickest way to earn merit? on: December 15, 2023, 03:36:03 AM
In your case, as I see that you are knowledgeable and interested in technical issues, if you focus most of the time you spend on the forum on exchanging knowledge in these sections, you will gain merits at a good pace. You don't need anything else.
682  Economy / Reputation / Re: The percentage probability that the account was sold on: December 15, 2023, 03:31:08 AM
We can settle this pretty quickly.

I don't believe so.

Can you sign a message from either of these addresses?

That would only prove that he is the second owner, the one who only spoke English and not Spanish any more. In fact he staked the address just after the posting gap indicating a change of hands and when he started speaking in English (and never wrote in Spanish again). Another thing I see is that in the first period he did not apply for any bounty but after a short time after he switched to English he applied, which usually happens when accounts change hands.

I remember about it when I need something and you will be surprised that people can speak different languages. Personally, I know 4-5 for B2 at least.

Please enlighten us, why would someone who has spent two and a half years writing only in Spanish, switch to writing only in English?

683  Economy / Reputation / Re: Is it worth a newbie warning flag in this case? on: December 15, 2023, 03:17:21 AM
I have seen that the scammer has not been active for a couple of days, as expected, and I was going to pass on creating the flag, at least for the moment, and that in the event that I saw him active again I would create it.

Yes, for an experienced and old member like you and me the tags may seem enough. But to a newbie or guest user, the active flag will display a banner on top of every post started by the scammer warning the users to proceed with caution when going to deal with them

Edit:

I have created a flag: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;flag=3258

But since you created it, I'm obviously going to support it.

I don't think there's anything else to say in this case, so I'm going to lock it.
684  Economy / Reputation / Is it worth a newbie warning flag in this case? on: December 14, 2023, 04:14:06 AM
This method of earning allows you to earn $1000 a day or more

It is a clear case of a scam attempt for which there is no need to give many explanations, but I was thinking if it would be worth creating a flag so that newbies and unregistered forum visitors could see it clearly.

I think it's most likely that after my tag and the responses he got to his thread, he won't be very active here again, but I hesitate to create the flag just in case.

685  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcoin's privacy battle and an ominous warning to the community on: December 14, 2023, 04:04:47 AM
whatever I have said so far against mixers was only based on Bitcointalk posts

Lie with dogs, wake up with fleas.

Digaran never ceases to amaze me. I think we already have another BenCodie case around here. So he's against mixers and has been getting paid for spamming the forum while advertising Mixero mixer in his signature? For months, I seem to remember.

A serious question - what can a mixer be used for other than obfuscate the source of the coins?

I don't know if there is another utility, but even if there was, that's the main one. The question is whether obfuscating the origin of your coins is only for illegal reasons or for very legitimate reasons, such as protecting your privacy.
686  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Stablecoins are killing payment systems on: December 14, 2023, 03:57:32 AM
You have to see who wrote this article: a stablecoin company. In other words, it can be biased but it's well documented.

It is surprising and hard to believe that:

Quote
According to Mastercard, 51% of Latin American consumers have made a purchase with digital currency and one-third have used a stablecoin for everyday purchases.

Because that would be over 200's of millions of people having paid for day to day things with stablecoin. Is there that much adoption in Latin America? This would mean that at least 20% of businesses have the option to pay with stablecoins and I find it hard to believe.

However, I don't see their adoption growing that fast in the past years. Credit cards are still the number one option for me when paying something with fiat currencies.

You live in Brazil, don't you? Do you believe the quote I posted, which is based on a Mastercard study?

687  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Did we forget about the lighning network? on: December 14, 2023, 03:44:35 AM
Because if you have bitcoin and fiat to pay for that coffee you can
- spend the fiat and basically do nothing for adoption
- buy bitcoin with fiat and pay with that coffee with LN, you still keep your previous stash intact and you use the fiat you were spending anyway

I usually see you write potent arguments but what you just said seems to me to be a joke. It had to be at some point, I guess.

The growth of LN and Bitcoin adoption has to come because of a demand and a need for real usage, not because some Bitcoiners try to increase usage in an artificial way like that.
688  Economy / Economics / Re: One of the biggest problem in our society is that average person don't have on: December 14, 2023, 03:35:37 AM
This is bullshit.

The entire OP is bullshit.

We are living in the time in history when access to capital is easiest for the ordinary citizen. Compare today with the Middle Ages, for example. And here you have the OP telling us a crap story based on victim mentality.

But what are we going to explain to him if he starts from such a distorted view of reality? Let's not explain to him that the average citizen is richer than a king of the Middle Ages because he has many more goods and services he uses (comfortable bed, air conditioning, state-of-the-art health care, heating, cheap flights, car, etc.), the only difference in favor of the King being that of the subjects who worked for him.

And that with cryptocurrencies you do have access to liquidity that you do not have in the traditional system, it's just another bullshit.
689  Economy / Services / Re: This method of earning allows you to earn $1000 a day or more on: December 13, 2023, 04:29:14 AM
Wait, 40% daily from deposit ? It's wild, never seen something before, can you add more information please about it and actually stick some proofs here, maybe you got statistics of this method or logs.

I just left negative feedback for the OP precisely so that those of you who have no experience in this are warned. I have seen many "offers" of this type for many years now and I can tell you that a 40% daily return is a scam that only people who do not know mathematics fall for.

If you invest as little as $100, with a 40% daily return, reinvesting what you earn each day, at the end of just one month (30 days) you would have $2,420,143.24. You tell me what the fuck the OP is doing here promoting his "system" instead of being on his way to his private island with his yacht full of models and bottles of champagne.
690  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are you feeling FOMO like I am? on: December 13, 2023, 04:24:00 AM
I understand being around 41k is a little "fearful" for some people, we were on our way to 45k and nearing that level and everyone assumed that it would be possible and suddenly we are all out, so I do understand the situation, its not that easy and its not something that we would all want, its unwanted when its lower. However, you need to understand that you need to have downs for ups to make sense. Plus, we are not that far off, its less than %10 away, another 4.1k increase (%10) means it would be something like 46k+ so much more than what it peaked, we are that close to going to a new high again, its not down too bad yet, and there is absolutely no need to have any worry about the situation.

It is simply this way, whoever does not understand what volatility is, do not invest in Bitcoin. Even in the middle of the bull market when ATHs are beaten there are also downturns where some people get scared and sell because they think that the big drop has just started and it is better to sell before the price goes down more. Some people go from FOMO to FUD in a matter of minutes.
691  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Did we forget about the lighning network? on: December 13, 2023, 04:14:11 AM
I don't see much future for it because I don't see a future in Bitcoin to pay for coffees. There are too many payment alternatives for coffees to choose Bitcoin. Why are you going to pay for everyday payments with something that in a year's time will easily be worth 3 times more and keep the fiat currency that next year will have a real purchasing power of at least 10% less?

692  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Logic of some gamblers against math on: December 13, 2023, 04:08:49 AM
I believe luck cannot be associated with mathematics.

What you call "luck" is just short-term statistical variability, and there is a part of statistics focused on the probability of games such as casino games.

The OP is right but with nuances. What many gamblers don't understand is that when they have a lucky break, what they have had is positive variance in an EV-negative game, therefore, you can't move on to the next play but the "luck" is not going to continue for long as in the long run the trend is going to be one of inexorable loss. Therefore, effectively, the best thing the gambler can do after having had a bit win is to go home with the money. And not come back.

That the first comment talks about the "heater" is precisely an example of not understanding how statistical mathematics applied to the game works.
693  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Who is wiser? on: December 13, 2023, 03:57:29 AM
It is obvious that miss Alice doesnt really understand investing.

If she really believes putting money into some random altcoin will pan out well, she is mistaken.  With so many altcoins around, just choosing one at random is not a smart strategy at all and  theres got to be a better way to decide which cryptocurrencies are worth buying into.  I would advise her to do some research first before throwing her money around randomly. Grin

Well, the point is that Alice is gambling not investing. But she can hit the lottery and make a x1,000 with some alt, which does not mean that she is a good investor, but that she has been lucky.

Regarding the example raised, in the OP with the other two cases, it seems to me too simplistic because it does not take into account the personal situation and other issues. For example, for me the answer of who is wiser between Bob and theymos depends on whether apart from what they invest they have an emergency fund and other assets. If Bob has a paid house and an emergency fund of 6 months of expenses, apart from what he is going to invest in Bitcoin and theymos has nothing, the wiser is Bob, but if the situation is the opposite, the wiser is theymos.
694  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin at its ATH of 2023 so far on: December 12, 2023, 04:50:06 AM
BTC corrected and is now at $41,654 after rising strongly to $44,700. Yes. There are always surprises for the market and the market needs to be well measured and the recent surprise of US Senator Elizabeth Warren introduced legislation to "crack down" on Bitcoin and the crypto industry and bring it "into greater compliance. What does this mean?" Does it look like a cryptocurrency sale or purchase proposal again.

What it means is that legislations in the USA and the EU will try to control Bitcoin transactions in the same way they control banking transactions. Add to this the implementation of CBDCs and we are heading towards a world with total control and no privacy.

This makes me doubt the potential return that Bitcoin may have in the future, since the characteristics that made it attractive until now, such as the incensurability of transactions, can be lost.
695  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Do you wrap up your gambling session? on: December 12, 2023, 04:39:38 AM
I do when I play poker. I used to play more and did one hour sessions. Even when I played a lot I always did one hour sessions with breaks. For example, one hour, 15 or 20 minutes break and play again, another break and play again. Nowadays I don't play as much and sometimes I don't even make it to an hour session. But in general it is a good idea to set a maximum session time.
696  Economy / Economics / Re: Flash Mob Theft -> closure of brick and mortar stores -it's economic impact? on: December 12, 2023, 04:34:14 AM
As an independent I actually prefer many republican laws over democratic.

Me too. I'm going to call you angry conservative, then. Welcome to the club.

Lol sounds like we’ve got an angry conservative. The fact of the matter is the most heavily populated places in this country tend to be ran by democrats. But it doesn’t mean this doesn’t happen when ran by Republicans. Just take a look at Chicago before their two most recent mayors as well as ILs last Governor. Still had these issues.

Flash Mob Theft it is something recent, not something that happened more than two legislatures ago, but if you want to give examples, look at what New York was like before Giulianni, during Giulianni's term and what it is like today.

Leaving aside supposed exceptions the Democrats are tolerant of crime, they lower penalties, blame the police at the drop of a hat instead of the criminals, etc. This has real consequences in the form of increased crime, filth, zombie neighborhoods like Kensington and so on.

however I don’t see them making this problem much better as both parties are corrupt as all hell. If you don’t understand that something is wrong with you.

If they are on equal footing in terms of corruption I prefer those who are tough on crime and keep the city clean and orderly.
697  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin and patience on: December 12, 2023, 04:23:11 AM
It also takes a lot of patience to see how many threads are opened in the forum of this style, which only focus on whether the price is going up or down, and where the OP once the thread is opened does not come back to comment on the answers that have been given. That way some of us run out of patience and put people on our ignore list.
698  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Unstable prices of cryptocurrency on: December 12, 2023, 04:15:52 AM
I see so many errors in what the OP says that I don't even know where to begin.

If you are going to invest in something, what you have to do is study it and make a reasoned decision as to why you are investing, not just buy because you think the price is going to go up. The latter is gambling, not unlike betting at the casino.

There are more volatile investments, such as Bitcoin, and the way to appease volatility is to think about the long term.

You have a lot to learn, OP.
699  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Count down to Bitcoin halving. on: December 11, 2023, 03:50:05 AM
I think it would be bigger this time. We saw how big the impact was with the previous one, which left an impression to people of this day.

Do you even follow Bitcoin price at all? The previous halving had the smallest impact of all the halvings so far, which should not be surprising since there are fewer Bitcoins left to be mined as the halving goes on. The "impact" was that price forecasts turned out to be grossly overestimated, and we will have to see what happens this next cycle to get a realistic idea of what we can expect in the following ones.
700  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Who should quit, and why? on: December 11, 2023, 03:42:30 AM
There's no problem even if the whole family is gambling as long as they are gambling responsibly.

If they do it this way, there is no problem. But it is a rare situation, statistically rare, I would say. I think that if it happens in couples who gamble it is because they do it infrequently, like going to play bingo once a month. But in casinos you very rarely see two that look like a couple.

The way the gamblers OP talks about it, I think it looks more likely to end badly than to gamble responsibly, and, in the case of quitting, it is better for both to do it. If both of them have this hobby, if only one of them quits, it will lead to resentment and bad feelings.
