Paper wallet is not easy to set up by the way

Paper wallets are very easy to set up using bit address.

For extra safety, you should run the code offline, and format your computer afterwards. Smiley

1606  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: about bitcoin cold storage on: February 05, 2014, 10:34:39 AM
No, as far as I remember cold storage refers to offline handling of a bitcoin wallet, i.e. it is not used on an online computer which has a 'hot' wallet.

Offline generated paper wallets can be also seen as cold storage. You can deposit bitcoins inside from hot wallets. As long as the associated private keys of those paper wallets aren't imported to an online bitcoin client or get stolen, they remain safe cold storage.

I may be wrong, please correct me. I don't own enough bitcoins to go through all this hassle. I care a lot for the security of my computer and don't blindly click here and there or install unsafe crap from anywhere that screams at me to do so. (Consider using safer and less prominent OS than Windows...)
Cold storage is a term now thought of as the safest way to store coins.

To understand the safest way to store coins you have to understand how coins can be stolen. The private key is the key to the coins. Anyone who has access to the private key has access to the coins. This means if some company uses all paper wallets but is careless about who has access to them it's probably not safe, and this can't be thought of as 'cold storage'.

Cold storage generally means not only are the private keys not on a computer with any Internet exposure, but they are typically locked away too, like in a safe/safe deposit box. As long as the private keys are printed on some medium (or multiple mediums) which will not typically become unreadable, the coins they protect are then thought to be in cold storage.

Note: addresses can continue receiving coins while the private keys are safely locked away in cold storage.

Thanks for your clarifications, both of you. Smiley
1607  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: First Post - Bitcoin gambling on: February 05, 2014, 10:23:07 AM
I hope to use this forum to communicate in the marketplace and find a couple solid sites to gamble bit coins. I have used 2 sportsbooks for  a while and they are great. I plan to find more and learn more about what each place has to offer.

You can find tons of sites here. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=56.0

1608  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BTC Exchange Rate Variance - Why So Serious Batman? on: February 05, 2014, 10:13:44 AM
Forget about the mtgox price, it is irrelevant.

People have been waiting for months to get their USD withdrawals.
Some of them just don't want to wait anymore. They cancel their withdrawals, buy bitcoins with all their USD balance, cashout their bitcoin, and forget about mtgox forever.

And, official 1st reference is incomplete, and must be updated.

Indeed, quite a lot of pages on the wiki are out of date.
Sadly, we don't have enough volunteers to update the wiki, partly because people are required to pay 0.001 btc before they are allowed to edit the wiki.

Can't help answering your problem though as I have no idea about it.

Just read your first few entries, and they look great.
It is a pretty good site for newbies to get some idea about bitcoin Smiley

1613  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: btcflow bitcointree not paid? on: February 05, 2014, 09:41:59 AM
I haven't received btc from both, payment is sheduled for one week now..

I haven't used any of the two sites.
But, there is no payment sent from the donation address since Jan 3, and the address balance is just 0.00001211 BTC now.

me neither.
Where did you get the donation address ?

At the bottom of the two sites, you can find "Donation address: 1NsbKG77bNR1X6s5LigHuckfNshXhoMFPB"

Duh !

No problem Smileyftw  Wink

Has anyone received any payments from btcflow.net and/or bitcointree.net lately?
Several days ago, I asked for my first payments from these faucet sites, but so far still received nothing.
I've searched this webboard and found that these faucets had problems like this before.
I can only hope that I will not lose my 0.7+ mBTC.

In fact this donation address has practically one month of inactivity so Warut it looks like you got ripped off.

Pretty much so Sad
1614  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: HAVE YOU HAD COINS STOLEN ON CRYPTSY? on: February 05, 2014, 09:38:48 AM

How did you lost your coin? The site didn't credit your account after deposits?
1615  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Transfer Fee? does it go up and down? on: February 05, 2014, 09:34:48 AM
Does the transfer fee change at all?
Does the minimum amount you can send for free change?

Yes, we had a few changes on tx fee in the past.
Yes, in the past, free high priority tx can be created, with tx size up to 10000 bytes.
It is now down to 1000 bytes starting from bitcoin-qt 0.8.6.

Why all this hate and disbelief? Try the latest version yourselves...

I didn't think a screenshot was relevant, but here it is.

Thanks for the screenshot.
I guess some of us here just surprised about your hashrate, but not really hate lol.
1617  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The worst ever that could happen on: February 05, 2014, 09:26:15 AM
I just sent 3.2btc to an address that I have no idea who or what it belongs to like an idiot. I am hurting right now man you wont believe. I clicked the "addresses" tab in the bitcoin client and copied the first one in the list thinking those were my receive addresses.

Sorry to hear your loss.
Your own addresses is indeed listed in the receive tab, and there is a line in the addresses tab "These are your Bitcoin Addresses for sending payments."

Mt. Gox perhaps? It wouldn't hurt to check all of your old accounts. Hopefully, it is not some defunct exchange.

but you repeat yourself.

lol.  Wink
1618  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Beginner's Resources on: February 05, 2014, 09:22:46 AM
My personal suggestion for bitcoin exchange is:
If you don't want ID verification, try localbitcoins.
If you are in US, try coinbase.
Otherwise, try bitstamp.
1619  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Non-scam Scrypt Miners on: February 05, 2014, 09:20:01 AM

On this note, be careful if others offer to send free samples. Someone in the past here did that to get people's addresses, then extorted them (threatening to mail them drugs and report it to the feds if they didn't pay a certain amount of BTC).

I haven't heard of that at all  Shocked

It was probably the middle of last year or so. It was a pretty bad situation.

Just did a few search and found this.

Stop editing your original post and post a hash of a message containing the winning number, to prove you aren't cheating. (I mean, not cheating any more than you already are - it was a number between 1 and 500 a few minutes ago. Roll Eyes)

lol.
I didn't notice it has been changed to 1-1000, until I read your reply. Smiley

I can see exactly the same.
Anyway I am sure the winner will be a newbie Smiley

Shhhhh......don't ruin the show.
