1101  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Why do 90% of Bettors Lose in Sports Betting in the Long-term? on: July 22, 2023, 07:26:05 PM
In relation to the topic, has anyone actually seen any sources for that 90% figure (of bettors losing long-term)?
I tried to find it but hit a wall. There are few articles claiming that only 3%-5% of sports bettors are successful, which sounds about right, but they're not citing any specific sources but are only referring to "different studies".

If anyone has seen any actual study and could provide a link, that would be great.
1102  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A idea from my home boy on: July 22, 2023, 07:13:42 PM
Ok, good day fellas, someone brought up an idea for storing his Electrum recovery seed to my notice and I feel it's not entirely still safe and I will like to share here for some feedbacks before I tell him my final answer about the idea.

If you get your recovery seed from any wallet, either those with 12 seed words or 24, and you decide to write down 10 out of 12 or 20 out of 24 and keep the other two words separately somewhere else, how stupid or cool is this? He claimed he will keep the two words in a safe location different from the other words and also store the two words off head.

Give your answers please, stupid? Cool? Not great? No need?

Could work for short-term storage but definitely not a great idea for a long-term one. It might sound safe at first it has some big security risks.
First of all let's start with that 2 words (out of 12). I'm fairly sure that if someone intercepts the first 10 words, brute-forcing the remaining 2 words would probably be doable. Especially if the thief knew that it's a 12-word seed and that the missing part are the last 2 words.
And memorising 2 words is obviously easy, but forgetting them is even easier. Most of people experienced suddenly going blank on something they remembered for a long time. Human memory is fragile and not reliable. We're not really "wired" to remember cold data, but rather to memorise experiences.

Second of all, whether or not that solution will be secure largely depends on how/where would you store the written-down phrase. Storing it on a piece of paper bears the risk of it getting: damaged (fire, flood, eaten by a dog etc), accidentally thrown away, lost (it's not hard to forget where you put it), stolen, or risk of the ink fading away over time or paper decaying etc. I wouldn't do it unless you have a home safe or bank deposit box.
1103  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns [Last update: 16-July-23] on: July 22, 2023, 11:53:51 AM
Just some updates for the campaigns that are now CFNP.
...
whirlwind is also now full but might still be open soon.

For now this campaign is considered CFNP with a possible option to add more members in the near future.

WhirlWind have now also increased their pay rates to $6 per post, that's for any rank. So Senior/Hero/Legendary are all paid the same.

Payouts and Positions:

26x Sr./Hero/Legendary Members - $6/post.
1104  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: July 22, 2023, 11:37:03 AM
In Paulo Costa's thing, I really can't say that he got good BJJ he may be bluffing about it but give the guy a chance to prove himself he has now canceled 2 fights which means Dana White will surely strike him on this, but he has said that he is really aiming for the Khamzat Chimaev fight, or maybe the UFC have realize that if he losses to Ikram Aliskerov people will then lose interest in seeing the bigger fight for Paulo Costa VS Khamzat Chimaev for sure,

Obviously Costa has not cancelled the fight with Aliskerov himself, it must have been UFC's decision. There's no way they'd make him fight twice in a span of less than 3 months. And yes, it would be extremely hard to hype up his fight against Chimaev if he were to lose to Aliskerov, especially when both of them represent similar styles/backgrounds. So it was either Aliskerov or Chimaev, not both.

Jedyna "trudność" to napisanie posta aplikacyjnego, potem z górki.

1106  Local / Polski / Re: jak zbudować początkowy kapitał bez KYC? on: July 21, 2023, 10:27:33 PM

świetny watek o merit source, zachęcam wszystkich do kometowania

Przypomnienie zasad aplikowania:

If you want to be a merit source:

 1. Be a somewhat established member.
 2. Collect TEN posts written in the last couple of months by other people that have not received nearly enough merit for how good they are, and post quotes for them all in a new Meta thread. The point of this is to demonstrate your ability to give out merit usefully.
 3. We will take a look at your history and maybe make you a source.

I gave you and the others 14 merits each. Hope some one gets appointed.
I added more merits, use them wisely on your local board.

Wow, that's bold. Thanks a lot! And thanks to all the others who merited.
Just for the record, I didn't start this post to ask/beg for merits but just to flag the need for a merit source to the forum admins. But I'll do my best to share the merits I received on my local board. And since I received quite a lot and the activity on the Polish board is not very high, this should be enough for at least a few months.
I can already tell the merit activity this month is already MUCH better than it was in June.

I feel like I haven’t heard much about Khamzat Chimaev lately. I expected he’d be getting some big fights by now but it seems like maybe they’re saving him for something? Maybe we’ll see him and Conor McGregor fight for the belt at some point? Conor McGregor is also rumored to be fighting in December, so I’m looking forward to seeing how his first fight back plays out.

It was announced yesterday that he'll be fighting Paulo Costa at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi in October, so yeah, they were saving him for something special. If he wins, he could even get a title shot for the middleweight belt against Adesanya (if he wins against Du Plessis). Or he could fight for the welterweight belt if he chooses to go back down.
McGregor is fighting Chandler next, it was rumoured to be in December, but probably won't happen until early 2024.
1110  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: July 21, 2023, 08:41:44 PM
His extra weight can be forgiven Cheesy He did have that nasty leg injury after all. If it was a hand injury it would be easier to recover. But it was a knee injury, that is always a long way to recovery and lack of activity during that time. If it is a torn cruciate ligament, then it is a month of just laying as minimum. And that right knee I think is going to be the first spot where Tybura gonna lend his low kick Grin Very often, fighters after a serious leg injury (not as finger injury Bones had Cheesy) aint the same fighters they were. First they arent as durable as used to, second are scared to hurt injured place.

Still, he looks pretty lean and doesn't seem to have much body fat, so I think this weight was intentional. He probably expected Tybura to show up much heavier than the current 246 and didn't want to be too far behind.
I'm more surprised at how good Tybura looked. You can say straight away that he takes this fight seriously and is interested in more than just collecting his cheque.
This fight could turn out to be much more interesting than I thought.
1111  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: July 20, 2023, 09:59:39 PM
Wikipedia claim that Costa vs Chimaev is already announced. Weird. I though Usman was calling out Chimaev. Funny that in past, no one wanted to fight Chimaev, but now he has two potential opponents Cheesy If I was Costa, I would prefer Aliskerov instead of Chimaev. Aliskerov might be easier opponent because he is new to UFC. Yeap that will be a risky fight if we speak about ranking, but I see zero chances to win against Chimaev for Costa.

Yup, Dana White confirmed it today, Costa will be fighting Chimaev and yes, you guessed it right, Makhachev will fight Oliveira again for the title defense.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsd1FY6J7dw

I disagree, career-wise Chimaev is a way better opponent for Costa than a relatively unknown Aliskerov. He'd be an underdog in any of those fights, but it's much less of a shame to get defeated by Chimaev, who currently has a reputation of an absolute destroyer. So all Costa needs to do is not to lose in too embarrassing fashion (i.e. survive at least 2 rounds or lose by decision) and he'd still be high in the ranks. Plus, the money and hype will be incomparably better.
1112  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Generating private keys on USB flash drive bootable Linux on: July 20, 2023, 09:29:20 PM
So if I am generating an address, making it offline, and if I am supposed to Air-Gap the address then I’m basically making it clear those funds aren’t for my use. It’s like I should be using this technique of saving my funds as if they are gonna sir their for very long period of time. Just like making it a cold wallet.

Pretty much. For active use, you'd obviously need an online wallet (or hard wallet). It should still be a bit safer to generate keys offline, but if you need to transfer keys to an online wallet, that renders the air-gapping irrelevant.

I don’t know, basically this is similar to one of my smartphone that I use to store my funds on. It’s old so I’m not using it but having a wallet on it and it is turned off so that I can keep it safe. I only turn it on occasionally to update the app and phone software’s.

I assume it’s somehow an air-gap? I think I am safe then with my technique too.

Nope. As Loyce said above, if you ever connect your device to the internet (after generating keys) it's no longer air-gapped.

Also note that air-gapping is just one element of creating a secure address. Offline machine won't protect you if the random keys generator is not truly random, i.e. if keys are generated according to some pre-determined pattern, the attacker could recreate them and steal your coins.
1113  Other / Meta / Re: Request for the merit source for the Polish board on: July 20, 2023, 08:43:51 PM
This is how merit laundering happens: I post a normal or high quality post, then someone gives me 50 merits, so I'm left with 25 smerits, then I send 25 smerits to another compatriot, then he will receive 30 merits from merit source, then he sends me 10 merits and so on. I would say that most of the times, local board members send inadequate volume of merits to their compatriots. Btw it's hard to argue whether person deserves 1 merit, 2 merit or 50 merits because everyone can back it up simply: I felt so.

I do understand where you're coming from but few things to consider:
- Merit history is publicly available, so when you have few people sending all merits between each other that could actually work against them i.e. they could get rejected from signature campaigns if a manager cares to take a closer look.
- This is not unique to local boards and abuse (or in-group preference) could happen outside of local boards.
- Finally, the idea is (or should be) to have every board "covered" by someone who is a merit source, this doesn't mean that local board participants who are sources have to distribute all their sMerits there, they could do it on other boards. Distributable merits are not earmarked.

So it all boils down to whether the right people are chosen as sources and whether their monthly allowance is of the right size. And also to whether campaign managers are doing enough to fight spam/low-quality posts.

I gave you and the others 14 merits each. Hope some one gets appointed.

Massive thanks (and to others who merited). Much appreciated.
1114  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: BLACKROCK SPOT ETF DISCUSSION on: July 18, 2023, 06:49:28 PM
People will not hold real btc because ETFs could not be called real Bitcoin holders. Etf trader are not holding any btc in their wallet. An ETF is just a contract in the form of paper.
Sure, but existence of ETF doesn't prevent anyone from buying and holding actual bitcoins. ETF is designed for institutional investors or for those who, for whatever reason, don't want to hold it themselves. And we all know that ensuring that our private keys are created and stored securely is not an easy task.
I wouldn't recommend anyone, who got into bitcoin just to trade it, to keep their coins themselves. The risk of losing them would be greater than with keeping them in an insured (I assume) ETF.

If prices increase then these big asset managers can dump the market to stable Price. This will decrease the interest of crypto users. In short the growth in price will be very slow just like gold

I don't think there's anything that prevents big whales from manipulating BTC price currently, so I don't expect introduction of the spot ETF would increase that risk.
The higher the volume, the less volatility. Not being able to experience another x1000 pump might sound bad at first, but it's a god thing in a long run. Due to it's nature BTC should still be steadily increasing in value and become more of a solid store of value than a high-risk-high-yield asset.

Bitcoin will not remain totally decentralized and the Government will be able to control it.

How exactly? In theory, nothing changes in that regard. Except maybe that with greater value, there's a greater incentive for governments (or other players) to try to highjack i.e. by co-opting devs and miners.
1115  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin has already campaign for itself on: July 18, 2023, 06:30:15 PM
Why even convince anyone to invest in bitcoin, or literally anything? There's little to no upside yet the downside is abysmal. Telling people where to put their money in is simply not the way to go.

This. I'd never try to convince anyone to put their money into anything unless they explicitly ask for my opinion. First of all, I don't have a crystal ball and can't know for sure if something will go up or not, and I would feel somewhat responsible if someone invested their money because of my recommendation (even knowing that every adult person is ultimately responsible for their actions).
There are other downsides, if they follow your advise and are successful - they'll come to you again with even higher expectations, and if they lose - you'd be likely to blame as people love to shift blame on anything other than themselves.

That being said, I have no problem in recommending bitcoin as an interesting concept and alternative to the fiat system and show them how it works (and explaining all the pros and cons).
1116  Other / Meta / Request for the merit source for the Polish board on: July 18, 2023, 06:16:35 PM
No idea if/what is the official process for requesting this, but Polish local board could really use another merit source.
To my understanding, we currently have only 1 source (malevolent) who is hardly active on this forum.

The stats say it all (credit to Rikafip), it's the local board with the worst merit/post ratio, despite high quality posts:

So I'd like to nominate any of the most active (and well respected) top 3 posters:

1117  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Where to invest 7k usdt on: July 18, 2023, 05:52:37 PM
Trading is not something that will help you get a stable income, in the trading section there is a topic where it was discussed that trading is almost impossible to get a stable, especially daily income. The advice to buy bitcoin sounds good, if invest and wait 2025 bitcoin can do x3-x4, then this can give approximately the expected profit. But in the case of bitcoin, you should not set any limits, or you should not expect x10 goals to be realistic.

That's true, in the UK and EU, trading platforms are required to disclose “standardised risk warning, including the percentage of losses on a CFD provider’s retail investor accounts.”, so whichever trading platform you go to, you'd see an information in a prominent position stating the percent of retail investors (aka average Joes) that lost money on that platform. This is almost always above 70%, sometimes going above 80%.
That's a good indication of what to expect when starting your trading adventure.

The better alternative to active trading (or day trading) is investing long term. If you put your money in a well-research asset with strong fundamentals, than it's not hard to make a profit. But you'll have to be patient and will have to forget about withdrawing regular profits.
1118  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🥊 The UFC Info and Prediction Thread on: July 18, 2023, 05:41:31 PM
This fight has been cancelled. Paulo Costa refused to fight in two less before the fight (Booo!). Now Aliskerov gonna fight Roman Dolidze, whos gonna be on short notice and fought in March against Vettori. For information, Aliskerov has only 1 loss (to Chimaev) in his career and is sort of a Chimaev on minimal settings. Either Costa has money issues with UFC again, or got scared. Because Aliskerov is a perfect counter for Costa (combat sambo + he is from Dagestan Cheesy).

Allegedly Paulo Costa is hinting (on his twitter) that the reason for his pull-out is that he got contracted to fight Chimaev at UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi (October?) and this would make sense.
His fight with Aliskerov was a poor match-up in my opinion. Aliskerov would gain a lot by winning, but from Costa's point of view, it was a high-risk-low-reward move. And from the UFC perspective, Costa is still a well hyped-up fighter, so why waste his earning potential like that? Setting him up against Chimaev makes way more sense money-wise.

Btw, anyone ever seen how Costa wrestle or use bjj techniques? Has he proved that he really got that black belt in bjj?

Not really. I can't find even a sparring footage on youtube.
1119  Local / Polski / Re: Ogólne rozmowy na temat kampanii sygnatur on: July 18, 2023, 05:05:58 PM

Mocno radykalne zmiany. Najpierw wielka podwyzka sporo powyzej innych, najlepiej platnych kampanii, a teraz wywalaja ponad 40% posterow. Hhampuz ladnie to ubral w slowa, sugerujac ze powodem nie jest jakosc postow ale "decyzja biznesowa" ale na koncu dodal "I'll accept some new members when doing the payouts this week, too" - czyli, jezeli bedzie mial jutro wolne miejsca, to znaczyloby ze jakosc (albo to gdzie pisza) jednak ma znaczenie.
Rzeczywiscie wyglada to na kopiowanie (a moze kontynuacje?) strategii Chipmixera.
1120  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin dethronement on: July 17, 2023, 05:02:27 PM
This is nothing new, plenty of times we have seen trading volumes of altcoins being higher than Bitcoin's (that's not to mention USDT, which constantly has its volume around twice as high as Bitcoin's).
As you said yourself, this is obviously driven by the recent news, and things are already returning to normal. Looking at the CMC right now, BTC's volume is over x3 times higher than XRP's. So the "dethronement" was very short-lived.
