3081  Economy / Speculation / Re: Poll :: When will Bitcoin reach $1 Billion total value on: February 01, 2012, 05:12:48 PM
Here's the final summary of the dates chosen, voting & prize entries are now closed, with the time frame of the 4 years up to the end of 2017 being the most popular years for issued Bitcoins to reach $1 B in the poll votes, but 2012 taking it in the date choice & the same for 1 BTC to gain parity with 1 gm Au.

Here also a rounded up table of the approx BTC price for achieving $1 B in the years of them being mined & the $ value of each 5 BTC prize offered - though I chose dates for 2015 myself the sooner I get to give those prizes away the happier I'll be  Tongue

Year  1BTC   5BTC    5BTC     20BTC (the doubled prize for winning both dates)

2012   $110   $550     $550      $2,200
2013   $95     $475     $475      $1,900     <--- WTG BTC & Scott J ~ March 2013 for the double prize!
2014   $80     $400     $400      $1,600
2015   $75     $375     $375      $1,500
2016   $65     $325     $325      $1,300
2018   $60     $300     $300      $1,200
2020   $55     $275     $275      $1,100
2023   $50     $250     $250      $1,000
2033   $48     $238     $238      $952

3082  Economy / Marketplace / Re: gold or silver bars as heirlooms? on: February 01, 2012, 04:32:43 PM
I'm as old as the hills & would be delighted to have inherited any gold or silver in any form & am actively building what I hope is an interesting hoard for future generations, it's down to personal taste of what you enjoy collecting, I would recommend saving an eBay search for silver art bars, over say $50 & at least 2 bids on them, that way you'll get to see the more collectable - sort after ones, maybe collect along a certain theme, for gold I'd start with a nice 1 gram bar or 2, the Pamp Suisse ones with the goddess Fortuna & cornucopia on are nice & symbolic of prosperity & abundance, the UBS hologram ones are very attractive too.

If I was in the States then a sack of pre 1964 90% silver dimes, check completed listings to see the current going prices approx for all the above. I would also go for slabbed (by PCGS or NGC) Chinese silver coins from reputable sellers/dealers

Making a collection of a specific type, date run or around a theme can be fun as you fill in the gaps & can be enjoyed virtually if you add them to a web page, personally though I would set up a Mt.Gox account specifically for BTC long term savings & pay in some $ for every birthday, giftmas etc, to buy a few whenever the price moves 10 - 20% down during the year, I'm setting this up for a friend's kid who lost her father in a tragic accident at 4 years old 2 years ago, I'd also buy Casascius coins

I hope to leave an eclectic mix of goodies as heirlooms when I'm even more ancient

so for now I'll just ask you all politely to get off of my lawn

& to take your dam metal detectors with you  Grin

OK last chance for any more votes or date picking here, I shall close this off tomorrow with a final summary (or an edit of the summary above) of the dates that have been chosen & leave the thread open, but any further dates picked after tomorrow will not be eligible for the prizes ~ good luck  Tongue
3086  Economy / Speculation / Re: From this point, what price do we see next? on: January 30, 2012, 11:11:39 PM
extra bold prediction, a short long term one, there will most likely be a 3 fold price increase in May of this year, probably early May, so however you play it then an all in position for at least just that time frame would be wise not to miss, after the event I shall elaborate more...

the € doesn't enjoy 25% daily swings against the $, so cheap at the price I'd say for a punt

Right, but it does enjoy the liquidity and leverage where you can successfully do that for your account (not something I'd recommend).

with enough leverage & enormous margin deposit one could I guess potentially get 25% daily returns on €/$ (or more likely 100% wipe outs), but this though is so different & harder for the average Joe to initiate as to be not even worth mentioning in this context, where as anyone with a few $ they don't mind risking can do this now relatively easily & basically anonymously via BTC

edit: someone buys $100 worth of BTC at Gox, they pay $0.55 fees, BTC move up or down 25% or more faster than the € can say TU, so how is that few cents going to matter even when it's no leverage 1:1, & @ 10:1 forget it
3093  Economy / Speculation / Re: Goomboo's Journal on: January 29, 2012, 08:46:51 PM
$100,000 last November in to BTC & Gox taxes you $270

hibernate for the winter

= win

try matching that return with €/$ however low the fees, high liquidity, leverage, etc

OK if you have B$ to invest but then why even bother to look at such a small cap as BTC where that would be unfeasible & anyway here the % returns potentially pwn & you can do it with your own $ rather than needing to manage a fund

3094  Economy / Speculation / Re: Goomboo's Journal on: January 29, 2012, 08:39:00 PM

I'm a trend follower, in this mornings case the extra indicators were added confidence but wouldn't necessarily dictated my action. Thanks for this thread by the way, it's good to have an extremely experienced person around to recommend the right books. I only wish I had the discipline to follow your approach and back test my strategy which I haven't even defined yet. But then again, that's the beauty of bitcoin, with only .65% commission at Gox, I have thousands of trades experience which I wouldn't have anywhere else along with the fact I can jump in and out. Were I paying 10$ a trade, along with account fee's I suspect I would be far more strict in my approach.

Thanks for participation in the thread!

.65% is actually a massive commission.  In the currency markets, the EURUSD is currently trading at 1.3217.  A .65% commission on it would be .0085 or 85 pips.  The commission I pay on EURUSD is about 1.1 pips.  Mt. Gox is 77 times more expensive to trade than the typical currency markets.

$100,000 trade on Mt. Gox
-> $100,000 * .0065 = $650 commission

$100,000 trade on EURUSD
-> $100,000 * .00011 = $11 commission

The only way to be profitable in short-term trading in the BTC market is volatility.  If volatility dries up, commission will crush trading.

0.27% actually

& even the € doesn't enjoy 25% daily swings against the $, so cheap at the price I'd say for a punt
3096  Economy / Speculation / Re: My position on: January 29, 2012, 08:18:43 PM
A lot of traders think they can beat the market, even though very few will be able to do so over the long term. Staying long will be the best strategy for the vast majority.

+1

because I believe the BTC has great potential & hence upside so I'm long term long, the one time I tried a speculative short was when there were heavy predictions of a fall due to the holiday season in late 2011 - that didn't exactly end well, but luckily I took a hit & had gone back to full on long after Thanksgiving so caught the Giftmas & New Year's booms which more than covered that loss & then some, my main concern about not being full time long & steadily adding to my position when able would be missing the, as I see it, inevitable leap up when some main stream adaption finally gets announced - I've no idea of when it may happen but I'm happy to risk a lot that it will be some day & it will probably be at the moment many think it's best to be waiting on the sidelines in $ or shorting even with leverage, I wouldn't be surprised to see a tripling of the price at some stage over a fairly short time frame & bar the obvious short term profit taking/speculating that would cause, then for it to become a salutary new price floor with much higher growth expectations, I'd rather that it took a while too as I'd like to add to my position beforehand as much as I feel comfortable risking when the flip side = 0
3097  Economy / Speculation / Re: Do you think Bitcoinica should switch to TradeHill? [Edited] on: January 29, 2012, 06:58:52 PM
to go from no fee to their small 0.65% fee when the gox has an even smaller small starting fee of 0.6% on a sliding downward scale of smallness strikes me as loony, especially as their spreads are normally much wider due to their smaller volume  Huh  which now will get even smaller I expect  Huh

3098  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Missing Mt. Gox BTC Withdrawals - Abysmal Customer Support on: January 28, 2012, 02:00:33 PM
perhaps to send your receivers Mt.Gox BTC codes until this is sorted out, they're working fine atm & always have as far as I know

just before this someone put up a 20k or so bid wall around $5.30 I think it was, right after my little buy it disappeared & the spike volume buy happened, same person I guess

mine was the little buy that pushed the price from $5.40 to $5.45 (821 BTC took just under 11 seconds) & I'd like to say a big thank you to whoever sailed in right afterwards with the 23k spike it to $5.75
