2622  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is NOT a Currency - Etsy Labs, Brooklyn - May 14th on: May 19, 2012, 10:18:30 PM
The worthy will own Bitcoin and will profit mightily from its ascendance long before the unworthy are forced aboard the train.

+1

I actually like the train analogy beyond that - it is as if we're building the world's first train, and all around us people stare and say, "That's not a horse! It won't ever work!" Meanwhile the rails are being laid to their door.

Well they certainly were laid right to the door of that lecture hall, thundering through every other minute, I really don't think that he gets it at all - he's trying to say like how the Internets etc may not catch on from the prior perspective of state regulated mail, telecoms & broadcasting & even if it did it would be such a threat to them that they would just have to try & destroy it rather than adapting, he seemed to me very smug & more interested in intellectual ego tripping than actually making a coherent open minded analysis of what Bitcoin is & could be

Just a few facts were of interest, like that the fx market is ginormous & bitcoins being just a small part of that would be huge, though that's already fully known so hardly news & he failed in any objective way to prove his assertion that Bitcoin is not a currency - imo

edit: currency, commodity, virtual trading units, whatever - I have done more international tx with bitcoins that any others over the last year, more purchases & sales (this has nearly all been bitcoins themselves rather than tangible goods - for those I still ex back to fiats), loans & receivables, investments & speculations, even charitable gifts than in any other currencies (fiat), commodities (PMs mostly), or even any other funds used for any purpose that I can think of

2623  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Emergency ANN] Bitcoinica site is taken offline for security investigation on: May 19, 2012, 06:24:02 PM
Approximately, how many clients/users did/does Bitcoinica have? I'm guessing about a couple hundred.

~Bruno~

Almost 5000

Wow! I didn't expect it to be that high and didn't expect you to personally answer the question, Zhou. I'll take your response as gospel. Thanks, bud.

~Bruno~

Yea, kind of sensitive information. But, 5000 Accounts doesn't mean 5000 clients.

especially as he had a thread in the newbies section giving a $1 free credit to anyone who signed up for an account
2624  Economy / Collectibles / Re: Now Here: Casascius 1000 BTC Fine Gold Coin on: May 18, 2012, 07:17:32 PM
I must say that I would still love one of these, but now with some pretty reliable guaranteed funds payback borrowers - say paying the least risk 2% per week, then the effective holding or opportunity cost of these beauts is their own bitcoin value in one year 1,040 BTC uncompounded, but for absolute cold storage then still hits the sweet spot especially if it's to be generational, lets hope that their collectable/rarity value increases eventually at the same 100% or so per year that putting the coins out to work would do

here's what I really, really wants though - one of these, but made out of a 1,000 BTC Casascius coin Tongue

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270980470752

would need some different tech to house the private key inside (or somewhere) tamper proof & drool proof, but would be sweet  Kiss

edit, actually maybe on the inside of the backside of the coin protected by hologram same as now would work simply & be fine

edit 2, a 80's style digital watch window inset in the face would make for lower production costs, I'd still prefer the Corum Swiss movement & hands myself, though either would be cool, the digital version you could have so it can click up to show your BTC balance in cold storage or interface with an Armoury wallet or something - once a day every time the time was 13:37 it would also make a leet sound of course, tra la  Smiley

edit 3, some pics:

feel free to photoshop them to 1,000 bitcoin goodness  Smiley

I'm using a Mac with Firefox & have no problems like this at all, if that helps finding what's going on here
2626  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: intersango negative orders ? on: May 16, 2012, 05:15:54 PM

2627  Other / Off-topic / Bitcoin - fitter than your old fiat dinosaurs on: May 16, 2012, 01:23:44 PM
Charles Darwin said the "survival of the fittest" is a central factor in the process of evolution. What exactly did he mean by that? He makes it clear in his book The Origin of Species: "It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the ones most responsive to change."
2628  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: blockchain.info generated address are invalid on: May 16, 2012, 12:35:12 PM
I just tried that C&P from myself's post & it worked fine from Gox - I see no space or anything like in your example

Maybe Gox is striping the character.

If I double click to select the address in myself's post only part of the address is selected e.g.

But If I double click the address in your sig the whole address is selected. Somewhere along the lines an invalid character got inserted.

weird, when I double click it it all gets selected & works fine

When I copy and paste the address from you post it has a space (or other invalid character in it)

1G5apmPvo2iTtmkNWAHTCET7 Y842Ufijs8

1G5apmPvo2iTtmkNWAHTCET7Y842Ufijs8 is valid.

I just tried that C&P from myself's post & it worked fine from Gox - I see no space or anything like in your example
2630  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Unable to send coins on: May 16, 2012, 12:15:42 PM

2631  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: Who Pays What? on: May 16, 2012, 12:00:30 PM
I just filled Smart's current availability of 76.67 coins, note that the rates shown on his home page are out of date, click on Savings to see correct current ones (which are those shown in his post above), his interest rates offered change every Sunday but obviously are fixed & locked in once you take out a saving's plan & the interest is added to your account & available to you at the end of the investment period
2632  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: blockchain.info generated address are invalid on: May 16, 2012, 11:57:00 AM
myself & someone else just tried to send me a coin to that address & it flagged up red as invalid, it's one from my blockchain.info wallet, but when I just tried now from Gox the tx worked fine - anyone know whats going on here, thanks

^^^ Coin movement so far. Previous commenter was correct about those blocks simply being blocks relayed by Bitcoinica.

On a related note, we know they "donated" some of Bitcoinica's BTC to the faucet, does anyone recognize any of the other addresses?

so atm they are just working with 1 out of the 7 of the 2,600 BTC stashes they split it in to & seems they are just slicing off miniscule bits of it (from 16 coins or less) as the 'donation' to the faucet does so basically they are still sitting on the 18,000 odd coins for now, not sure how these little micro finance dispersments help them unless to spread the loot's taint as wide as possible before they get down to some serious laundering
2635  Economy / Economics / Re: Billionaires hate Bitcoin. on: May 15, 2012, 07:24:24 PM
Why would they want to invest in something that could end their hold on cheap debt and a controllable monetary supply?

It would just be eliminating their power.

Multi-millionaires and Billionaires will love BTC when they need to make a move that can't create too many ripples.

+1

& some of those moves could be very positive too
2636  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - Verified rolls, up to 65,000x winning on: May 15, 2012, 06:41:04 PM
Quick update:  Since our house run of luck has been terrible (though we still believe, within the bounds of statistical possibility without cheating), we are increasing the house edge just slightly, up to 1% from .818%. We may bring the edge back down in the near future. We need to do this as the house pool is not large enough to enable people to be placing the size of bets they'd like so this should help with that aspect.
It's probably due to people using a progressive betting strategy. This doesn't reduce your edge, but it does change the flow. What will happen is that instead of having a small trickle of profit, you will have a small trickle of loss with the occasional spike of huge profit. You will need to increase your reserve, but you should be quite happy to do that.

+1

depending on the strategy the punters may enjoy modest & accumulating wins say about 98% of the time, but play long enough &/or enough of them playing that, then martingale will eventually bitch slap their collective wallets in the house's favor

2639  Economy / Long-term offers / Re: BTC - Loan- 3 / 4 / 8 Weeks on: May 15, 2012, 01:17:41 PM
Thanks for your statement.

Currently, there are free capacities about ~ 300 BTC.
And a small rate hike.

Greeting

Hi Smart, I have filled your 300 BTC capacity by taking out a 60 day savings account @ 8.56% interest/month = 351.36 BTC due 14/7
Many danks  Smiley

edit: & don't go bloody bailing out Greece with it, however much interest they may be offering on their 10 year bonds

Apparently the favorite joke in Greece now is: the Prime Minister of Germany flies into Athens airport.

"Name?" : "Angela Merkle."

"Occupation?" : "No, no, just visiting."

It's the same person who called lotteries an investment there - I'd worry more about their grasp of English than yours, it's perfectly clear
