Do you guys realized that ALL coins will suffer for a while?

Ethereum started their "presale" today and pulled 1200 btc out of the whole market.

Where do you think those btc comes from?   People are selling out on all their altcoins to jump into it.  1200 btc is not a small numbers to be pulled out of the market into another coin.

Yeah I thought this too. It seems a huge risk to me - there's been so much hype over ethereum, and once you commit you're locked in

Just read through the ETH offering....I seem to have missed the part where they say they are accepting XCurrency as payment for the ipo.

That's why people needs to get btc...  which part of needing btc did you not read? Wink

Where does btc comes from if their holdings are locked in altcoins?

I think he was joking

or he really doesn't understand why it has to do with altcoins, especially XC, price action today?

It is quite insane to have all the coins locked up.   The part where it's not launching the genesis block till winter 2015 possibly is the part that's really mindblowing.   You CANNOT even trade Ether until the genesis block is out....

From their blog:

Quote
Ether will NOT be usable or transferable until the launch of the genesis block. That is to say, when you buy ether and download your wallet, you will not be able to do anything with it until the genesis block launches.

The expected launch time for the genesis block is winter 2014-2015. This date has been continually pushed back in large part due to funding delays, but development should soon start to proceed much more quickly.

We reserve the right to use up to 5000 BTC from the pre-sale while the pre-sale is running in order to speed up development. We may or may not take this option depending on community response; if done at all it will be done transparently.
That last point.   Imagine this was the biggest altcoin SCAM ever...  not saying it is, but holy if it is, most elaborate scam too.

not the best time to be doing that sort of thing.

I think you would do well to delete that post Mr XC supporter.

You know how easy it will be for a new account to create some "crap" and post as a DRK "supporter" everywhere and make the DRK community look bad?   Do you really think that this is really a XC supporter and not some other coins supporter?

This one is actually from Cloak supporter...  Pookie and Mr.boh

Just curious.  What brand routers are you using?

ASUS RT-AC68U

Don't know if that makes a difference, but my router is a Netgear.    I doubt that's the issue, but just wanted to see....
567  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][XC][OFFICIAL] PoS/Privacy on: July 22, 2014, 01:51:45 PM
Still need assistance in getting the private transactions to work on build 2.45. Over 15 attempts of various amounts between 1 and 10 and no dice. Correct ports open on both the router and win firewall, wallet has full network access, etc. No coins lost, just no transactions showing up and certainly nothing ending up on the other end. It shouldn't be this difficult... what am I missing?

That's odd. Is your internet connection through a large institution or some entity that might have all manner of filtering on its network?

For example the Oxford University network doesn't let private tx's through at present.

This is an issue that'll be resolved in future updates.

Nope, individual home connection. For the life of me, I feel like I have followed what existing directions to a T and have everything setup appropriately but yet nothing. I'm not trying to start anything here as it would be counterproductive being that I hold quite a few coins myself, but I do want to know why I am having issues on a feature that everyone else seems to have no problems using (especially when it is a core feature by design).

Just curious.  What brand routers are you using?
568  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: July 22, 2014, 01:50:00 PM
- the average newbie to crypto has trouble telling the difference between P&D scams and legit projects
- there's a general lack of clear information to guide newbies
- coins thus only rise to prominence by getting pumped
- the majority of speculators thus only hear about it 3/4 of the way to the top and get burned.

We really want to avoid contributing to this dynamic.

That all sounds very idealistic.

And, yet, you will be contributing to exactly this dynamic once you release your delayed open source.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.... so you want the source opened or not then?
569  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: July 22, 2014, 01:34:26 PM
XC was under the radar for several days with no mention on the pre-ann page about anon, it was a simple crappy wallet with no coin icon and a slight mention of some android app.

If I had rented 100mh/s in the first 2-3days I would have over 500BTC worth today.

I personally mined after the launch ( a few hours in) with 7 gpus for 6 hours ( at the current price that would be roughly 10BTC worth)

EDIT : Plus its coin supply was cut from roughly 16m coins to 5m after they mentioned anon

The initial ANN was scammy at best with no logo, no mention of anything other than a "andoid app" .

Do you really think this was not intentional by the developer and his friends to mine more and go under the radar ?

I am proof that that didn't happen... I am not a friend of the dev, yet I had the top hashes for almost a week+.   All I used was my rigs (under 120 Mh X11) and rented some here and there.

I was trying to find the initial cache of the page from webarchives but I couldnt. For this exact reason someone would jump in mention that the launch was fair.

Something smelled funny about the coins ann thats why I mined it.

Do your remember the diff on the first few days Wink ?

60 day POW was the initial distro if I remember correctly (then people said cut the supply short etc etc)

You know, I was just discussing with my friend that mined along with me.   The funny thing was, during that time a LOT of coins came out that turned out to be scam.  I remember that XLB, summercoin, whitecoin, yellowcoin, asiacoin... all of them was during that time.   I just ignored it and mined XC because the ANN was by a non-newbie account (atcsecure).   That was one of the biggest reason why I mined it over the other crap coins.

The diff wasn't super high, it was actually really really low.  under 100 for like a week at least.     That's another reason why I kept mining it.

I also liked that it wasn't on any exchange.  To me that was a sign of pump & dump by most other coins.    I just felt that the dev wasn't in a hurry to dump it on an exchange.

Fact is though, for sure there weren't many people mining it with major hash  early on.
570  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: July 22, 2014, 01:23:02 PM
the main argument for closed source is that the distribution of the coins is non-optimal, otherwise you would not need to protect would you? Wink

I don't follow your reasoning. How would a coin's distribution affect its policy on open source?

from a logical standpoint, cloners need a reason to clone: the only reason for a clone to become successful is that the initial distribution is horrible. if everyone agrees that the distribution is fine, the clone will never get support.

this argument even holds from an empirical standpoint: see nxt, which was closed source until the mid of january and had a horrible starting distribution, see drk, which is still in parts closed source due to bad distribution and the fear of clones.

see on the hand xcp, which is not cloned due to the consensus that the distribution is fair. see bytecoin which was cloned due to the distribution and which is now lacking success because of the market deciding that the clone is fairer.

if your coin does not have a bad distribution I see no reason why it should be cloned and therefore no reason why it shouldn't be open source.

By your argument, Bitcoin had terrible distribution... that's why we have so many forks of bitcoin and then alts now.

Risto, I propose that you make a rule to forbid discussions about closed-source alts in this thread. These are really not worth our time.

And what happens when something special comes along? Are we not allowed to talk about it?
Are we going to have a list of rules here?

The problem is to define "special". I personally make it a rule that something closed-source is not special enough for me to spend time going through it. Even if it's "temporary" closed-source.
The fact that developers worry of other coins copying their code right away is in fact revealing a lot of their personal motives, if you ask me.

We are not going to have a list of rules, there is already one Smiley

The rules of this thread are very strict, as always in my threads:

- There is no freedom of speech. The topic is altcoins, but I also want that it stays in a level that is possible and interesting to read for a busy Bitcoin holder that does not care about alts. I know how it feels to be a busy Bitcoin holder, so I steer the discussion to the maximum benefit for me, and for my readers.

- Which alts can be discussed, is up to me. Mentioning an alt after that specific alt has been banned from a thread results in a ban for you. If you do not obey my ban from the thread, historically you have had 100% chance to be banned from the forum as a result. Don't try your luck.

- Posts may be deleted for whatever reason. Deletion does not necessarily mean that the post was offensive. It may also have been too long quote (in which case either the original, or the reply may be pruned), repetition of yours or somebody else's point, or anything else.

- Moderating actions are written in red. Others are not allowed to use red.

I guess your suggestion is to just discuss about Monero then?
573  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: July 22, 2014, 12:51:45 PM
- we'd avoid causing clones, which reduce the trustworthiness of the altcoin phenomenon

Whatever the other merits of your approach, this one is silly. There are hundreds of altcoin clones, with countless more released every single day. Whether or not your particular pet coin gets cloned or not makes no difference at all to the overall phenomenon.

If your objective is to completely destroy altcoins, yes then that would be the approach.

I would definitely say it makes a world of a difference to the people that have invested in the coin to not have their premium feature released before it reaches its prime and have hundreds of different coin clone the one thing that separate it from all the other coins....
574  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: rpietila Altcoin Observer on: July 22, 2014, 12:35:50 PM
Why would the code not be open sourced? That's a bit scary. Any reasonable explanation as to why they would choose this path?

Why?  How many crappy clone coins do you think will be released the same day the source is released based on the anon tech?
575  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [Poll] What anonymous coin will succed? on: July 22, 2014, 12:05:32 PM
I would sometimes say not only one Coin. DRK, XC, XRM and CLOAK are very good coins with good teams.

Other coins have a high potential but still need more development and PR.

This +100.

Why does it always have to be just ONE coin that succeed?   Each coins will have its purpose.   It's like saying why isn't there just ONE currency that every country should use....  or there should only be gold, why is there silver, copper, etc.

I am dumping a chunk of my Voot. Sick of waiting for BS that does not arrive and when it dose arrive, the coin will never go higher than 1500-2k sats ever again, because many people people are dying to get out of this shit coin.

Even the Dev wants to sell coins.. what a joke!  Talk about having ZERO confidence in the future price of the coin. If you are crazy enough to buy this crap, set you buy orders at 700 sats.

Just because you are dying to get out of this coin, doesnt mean 'many people' are too. You are impatient and obviously chose to invest for short term gains. Go buy pump and dumps for short term gambles. Voot here to stay.

+1

Notice how the dump was absorbed and the price was pushed down by only 100 satoshi?   The buy support is definitely there.

Hi all

Just to let you know I'm going to post on Cloak's thread. I'm interested to find out about PoSA and how the community members understand it.

I'm not there to tell them XC is superior. I only want to understand how PoSA works, since I don't see how it avoids the risk of transactions getting lost due to orphaned blocks. Let's see what they have to say...

Pookie definitely wants to start something....

Let's see how his investment in Cloak do... and how bulletproof Cloak is...

Ah well, it takes more than one person, and few people are as volatile and offensive as pookie.

Hey maybe that _evolution_ guy and him can join forces. Ha ha.

Either way, we've got nothing to worry about. We're not offending Cloak, and they're not an incumbent coin hoping to squash upstarts.

Actually I'd like to initiate some respectful conversation with the Cloak people. That'll be way healthier.

PoSa itself sounds really interesting and might actually help advance PoS crypto coins in general.    XC and Cloak are two coins out of a few that actually have innovation out of the recent coins.
