Yes, if he plays definitely he will be the betting favorites and I will love to see him sweating to get that US Open trophy again, LOL. I'm also thinking that same, without fans that are going to boo at him, he can really focus on his opponent, unless his opponent is really distracting like Nick "the bad boy" Kyrgios.

But as I have said, I doubt that he can be affected by fans going hostile and booing him, he has been used to that environment before.

He is the favorite to win the US open trophy especially without fans.
But from the moment, crowd is back allowed, it will be different times. Because then, the amount of booing against him will be x10, can he cope with that? I have my doubts.
Currently he is one of most valuable player in tennis and playing with fans or without fans is not going to create any problem for him as he already very mature and experienced but recently some issues going against him which are not good but still for me he is strongest to win few Grand Slams without any problem.

That is exactly what I am thinking and have been saying on here. Yes we know that the crowds have been hostile towards Djokovic in the past however it was mainly in grand slam finals and against either Nadal and Federer but now we could see the hostile crowds in all of his games from the start of tournaments to the finish and then the question is can he handle the constant booing from the crowds. We all know he is mentally tough but it can take a toll on a person if it is constant, time will tell.

In this time of no majors being played there was an exhibition match which just closed for a womens side of pro tennis league the WTA. Smiley
With the winner in Berlin Germany being Elina Svitolina! Wink

Gave them both bottles of wine after the win! Cheesy

I know it is just an exhibition match but atleast it's something to fill our tennis fix. Grin
Her opponent said after the match (Petra Kvitova the actual favorite to win) she was not use to playing in an airport hanger and was more comfortable playing on grass courts where they were playing before the rains came in. This had the entire tournament deciding to send the finals to this venue instead.

^^ Cool, and those players who fought in the finals are rank, so it's good to see that they participated in this match. And Petra Kvitova has a point, they are not used to this kind of settings, but I guess this will show how tennis players will adjust on the current setup as it will be totally unpredictable now.

It will show how versatile a tennis player is, and how they can rise to the occasion and fought even if they are out of their comfort zone.

Yeah I think players will need to adjust to situations like this as we could see this happen a lot more with what's going on in the world. The organisers of the tournaments need to protect the players and everyone else from this virus so even though it makes it uneasy for players it must be done. I got my eye on the US sports right now to see how they go which will give us an indication to see how it all goes for the up coming US Open.

We can only hope that situations like this are unique and don't turn back anytime soon after this virus is over.

On a side note, Kim Clijsters seems to be in good form by winning all her matches, even against tough opponents like Stephens and Kenin. Curious to see how she will do in the bigger tournaments.

BIG WINNER!

From what I have been reading, Nadal will most likely skip the US Open and concentrate on the clay season which starts a week after the US Open which makes sense as its favoured surface to play on. With Djokovic he said that he would like to play at the US Open however he is worried about returning to Europe with the strict quarantine rules in place for people coming into Europe from the US. More about this can be read in the article below.

Today I read an article that the big 3 chose not to take part in the US Open 2020

It's a weird situation. Principal factors putting players off seem to be:
Proximity to clay court season,
The fact that Covid19 is running rampant across the USA,
Quarantining after international travel.

With a lot of major players not taking part, this is perhaps the best opportunity that a lot of players will ever have to win a grand slam tournament. The fact that they are having to balance something they've aimed for their whole careers against the effects of an ongoing global pandemic is bizarre and unprecedented. But that is the situation.

Nadal is the king of clay and no one doubts it. Moreover, this is a great opportunity for him to be able to equal Roger Federer's record in the number of GrandSlam trophies.

Young players especially in the men's section should be able to take advantage of this opportunity, although often what they achieve will always be associated with this weird condition.
D. Thiem is my favourite to lift the US Open trophy this year.

@Strongkored Wawrinka is also skipping the US open along with Nadal, and this will be an excellent opportunity for Djokovic and Thiem to try and win it because there will be very less competition against them. Also there’s some worrying news too as Djokovic has yet not made up his mind whether he’ll participate in the US Open or no because of the strict Quarantine rules in place, and it’ll be really sad if he too decides to skip it.

As I expected, the big 3 are going to pass the US Open and we have a discussions about this and a good chance for other players to be the next champion few pages back. You can't really blame the big 3 for not participating specially Nadal because of the current situation in the US. So for sure we will see another name to win the US Open 2020.

Citi Open has officially cancelled it's tournament as well,

I haven't posted in this thread in a while, no tennis tournaments made not so many topics to discuss. Today I read an article that the big 3 chose not to take part in the US Open 2020, but Thiem has announce still participate in US Open and I think He has big change to win the throphy, the article is a month ago .

https://www.sportskeeda.com/tennis/news-dominic-thiem-confirms-us-open-participation-will-also-play-cincinnati

Well I'm with you on this we can't blame them for not wanting to participate at the US Open with what is going on with the virus there. The main thing stopping them is being able to return to Europe after being in the US. This now opens up the door for lower ranked players and a few players that have been close to winning but fall towards the end when they come up against the top players so I think its going to be an interesting tournament to watch to see if we finally see a young talent win.

@vella85 indeed we cannot blame them for skipping the US open, and while the virus is the primary reason they’re keen to skip the tournament, the second reason is that the French open is starting just few days after the US open, and hence they won’t be able to participate in it due to quarantine rules if they return from USA. Also many of us including me have said before, and I’ll repeat that I strongly feel that Thiem can win this tournament, as there’s no competition for him unless Djokovic decides to participate in the tournament.

=> https://tennishead.net/novak-djokovic-ready-to-commit-to-us-open-but-his-one-key-condition-is-revealed/
Nadal is the king of clay and no one doubts it. Moreover, this is a great opportunity for him to be able to equal Roger Federer's record in the number of GrandSlam trophies.

I am wondering, if he can be proud of it, if he does and if it would be an enjoyable moment for him. He will be in the history books, but for me it would be with an asterisk next to it, if the best players are missing.
Even with all the money involved and to be earned, these guys are sportsman and competitiors by heart and I wouldn't feel too proud, if I win the US Open this year under these circumstances. But maybe thats just me. It's still an achievement, but would leave a bad taste in my mouth nonetheless.

It's a bit like Federer finally winning Roland Garros in 2009. He completed his personal Grand Slam, but he didn't beat the clay GOAT en route to it. So for me this win has a little asterisk to it as well and I wonder if Federer feels a bit the same. When I win something, I want to do it against the best of the best and not against a weakened field to be 100% proud and able to enjoy it.

This will definitly not be the same as if he won it with all of the big guys playing. I actually think he is making a mistake by participating. USA is heavily hit by corona and he will probably need do go into isolation before resuming with clay season in Europe. Taking into account that clay is Thiem's best surface it would maybe be better to stay in the Europe whole time. I know he is a young player and of those who like to play as much as possible tournaments but he will probably have to make some concessions due to corona.

I don't think this bothers him at all. Maybe it would be different if Nadal couldn't play because of injury but Nadal played in the tournament and lost to Soderling. Not Federer problem that he was not good enough to reach final that year. Of course it would be that much sweeter if he manged to clinch it against Nadal.

I see where you are coming from as you want to play and beat the best the sport has to offer. I'm still not sure if Thiem can get the job done on hard courts, yes he has improved which we could see at the AO but I'm still not confident that he can win against other players that love hard courts. He is taking a big gamble playing at the US Open as he is a much better player on clay which we have seen in the past two clay seasons and French Opens so I wonder what made him choose the US Open over the French Open? unless he is hoping that he can get back in time but that looks unlikely with the strict Europe quarantine rules in place.

Exactly, although there could be some questions if a young talent win without the top seed. But still a trophy is a trophy for them and they really need to prove that their win is no fluke by defending it next year with a full roster, if everything subsides and the situation normalized.

Probably Thiem thinks that he can win this US Open over French Open. And I think that he can probably be back on EU after completing US Open.

Well for sure there could be some questions or even doubts if you win without that much competition in front of whoever are going to win this year's US Open, be Thiem or someone else. And its going to be a debatable or as you have said (*) in your resume winning under the circumstances. So let history decide for itself, if fans are going to judge you like that in years to come then so be it. It is what it is, they don't want to compete and you take advantage of the situation.

According to this article by the Index portal, https://www.index.hr/sport/clanak/tenis-se-u-2020-nece-igrati-u-kini/2200515.aspx  Tennis will not be played in China in 2020.
Tennis Professionals Association (ATP) and Women's Tennis Association (WTA) had to accept the Chinese government's decision to cancel all international sporting events in China in 2020.
Thus, the only Asian Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai, the 500 series tournament in Beijing and two 250 series tournaments in Chengdu and Zhuhai will not be held and many other tournaments.
This is certainly a big blow to the continuation of tennis competitions this year, along with all the other problems due to the cancellation of the US Open by some players.
Can the tennis season still be saved this year or is the tennis story over this year?
