Medvedev was not match for Djokovic in this final except for the first set but after that Djokovic dominated the match and won his ninth AO title easily. I would of thought it would go to five sets but Medvedev couldn't match Djokovic and again it just goes to show that the young guys coming up still can't beat the top 3. The top 3 have dominated at least one grand slam each, Federer with the most Wimbledon titles, Nadal with the most French Open titles and now Djokovic with the most AO titles. When it comes to the US Open, I'm not sure if we'll see one of these players have the most as the record is at 7 titles and the only one close right now is Federer on 5 but I can't see him reaching 7 US Open titles. Djokovic would need to win 4 to equal the record of 7 which could be possible.

When it comes to mental toughness and experience, the big 3 specially Djokovic will continue to dominate. The young generations are still no match  as the 3 always play big time in a Grand Slam tournaments. I thought that this will be a epic back and forth five setter, but it is not as Djokovic put a masterful clinic to Medvedev, near perfection game.

We are very lucky to witness three great players in history as I don't think we'll see this happen again in our lifetime depending on how old you are of course but to have three dominate players playing at the same time and dominating the sport might no ever happen again.

Yes, may not see another 3 great tennis player in our generation like Djokovic, Nadal and Federer at they have completely dominated in the last decade or more.

That's what it comes down to in tennis, mental toughness to keep fighting even when the player is down or is caring an injury like we saw with Djokovic. I don't think we have seen a player like Djokovic when it comes to mental toughness except maybe for Nadal as he also has that same fight in him to keep going even when he is down and out.

The young talent we are seeing in Men's tennis is very good but they won't get anywhere as long as the big three continue playing. The sad thing is that when the big three retire, most of the young talent coming through right now will be close to their 30's and some in their early 30's that's if Djokovic and Nadal can continue on to the age Federer is right now. Its going to be an interesting 3-5 years in Men's tennis.

I totally agree mate, we have been in total discussion about this years ago. Yes, we have our own favorite young gen of tennis players and they are really doing good. But with the big 3 still around, it's going to be difficult to overwhelm them unlike the past tennis greats. Like Sampras or Agassi.

They played well beyond their age and obviously, their game goes down. But with the big 3, it seems that they always up the ante whenever they are in a Grand Slams and always beat the young and upcoming players.

Yes I remember it was you and I mostly talking about this as this thread was basically dead back then and it was just a few of us on here discussing the big three and where we thought they would end their careers when it come to winning the most grand slams.

I agree mate, the big three seem to always go that one step further and win tough matches even when they don't look like winning. It also amazes me that Federer won several grand slams in his late 30's which we haven't seen before and its looking like Nadal and Djokovic will be doing the same which is why I said that we might not see the young players now winning grand slams until they are in their early 30's as that's when the big three should be retired, well Federer will most likely be retiring in the next year or two. Nadal and Djokovic I think still have several years before they retire as long as they can remain fit and healthy.

Yes i think its time for federer to retire because its difficult for him to compete for the titles because of his age even nadal is a little out of his performance but there is a lot of promissing young players like thiem and medvedev with the potential to replace these big names.

I won't argue with you, Federer will a well rounded player among the three of them so my vote goes for him as the GOAT in this generation of tennis players. He also had the outside charisma of an athlete, not just inside the court. So I also wanted to see him go and chase for at least 1 GS this year if his body still permits. And he still has the edge even when face with this batch of new players.

And I will say that I watch him early in his career (2003-2204 if I'm not mistaken), beating Pete Sampras and that is the passing of the torch and I think in 2006 he has the best winnings of anyone else in modern era, winning 3 Grand Slams and other big ATP tournaments. Yes, maybe he misses the Olympic gold medal but he still holds the record for most titles. Obviously, Djokovic can break that but it doesn't mean that he is greater than Federer.

Yes I agree and I also was watching Federer early in his career and we could see very early on that this guy was going to be a great player but I never expected him to be the greatest ever. He does have 1 Olympic gold medal for doubles and a silver for singles so he has done well but I think he would really try and push for the gold medal this year as it will complete everything there is to win in tennis.

Drama as Ash Barty crashes out in Adelaide shock defeat.

There was drama in the match earlier, with Collins accusing the chair umpire of giving Barty preferential treatment because she is the home-country hero at Memorial Drive.

Collins was refused a Hawk Eye review by the chair before Collins angrily accused the official of bias because “she’s an Australian”.

“I am sorry but this is unacceptable,” she bristled towards umpire Tom Sweeney.

Replays showed Collins was right to be angry with the ball judged to have landed out by millimetres.

Former Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian said the younger players on the men's ATP Tour must start believing in themselves if they are to close the gap on Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Don't know if you guys are familiar with David Nalbandian but I've seen this guy play against the big 3. And I would say that he has a point there, if the young guys are mentally weak and not think that they can overcome the big 3 in Grand Slams, then they are not going to over over against Djokovic or Nadal in the next 2-3 years.

Nalbandian used to be one of my fav players to watch along with Nikolay Davidenko and Marat Safin. Just thinking about it, I had a lot more fav players haha. Carlos Moya, Lleyton Hewitt all such great players..only to miss out on greatness because of different circumstances. Its not just about believing in themselves. I think the current gen, other than a few players dont have the work ethic like the ones Ive mentioned above. When you watch Nadal, Djokovic work through the point and the match in their peak. I dont think there's anything any gen can do. Even if you believe in yourself. You need to have the talent and the work put in to match what Djokovic is doing. Which is close to impossible.. The top 3 are just that good.. A cut above the rest.

Another great tennis player, a former sixth player in the world, is ending his great tennis career (most likely).
He had the peak of his career in 2009 and won a total of 14 tournaments.
I loved watching him in tennis matches.

Sad to hear that and I hope he will return to the tour. This past year must have been tough for players prone to mental conditions with all the lock downs and cancelled tournaments due to covid.

That being said I will not miss watching him on the tour. He is maybe the most passive player I ever saw on the tour, granted with his physique he did not have an option to play in different way. I always prefer watching attacking players and I never watch the matches between two counter punchers. You know the one when every point has 30+ hits and 25 of them are just down the middle waiting for other guy to do something.

Yes Tsitsipas was able to come from behind and beat Nadal however as we have seen with Tsitsipas, when he has the winning momentum in tournaments he can't go on with it and actually win the title. We have seen it many times over the past several years with him and just when we think he is ready, he then puts in a bad performance and loses. To be honest the same can be said for many of the young talent, they do well in smaller tournaments and win titles but in the big tournaments they fail to achieve success. Yes ok Thiem won the US Open but if Djokovic was in the final would he of won? I doubt he would because Djokovic was in top form and looked like he would win again.

It all comes down to winning mentality and to be honest, the young talent don't seem to have it right now and it might not change until Federer, Nadal and Djokovic retire.

This can happen quite unexpectedly, and quite expected as the great tennis trio is not getting younger, and the young people on the contrary are increasingly beginning to gain confidence in their game. I think that if Federer can win the Tokyo Olympics, he can finish his great career this year. As for Djokovic and Nadal, I would like to say that Nadal is very strong on clay courts, but not to such an extent dominates them on other types of surfaces. In the same way, I would like to say that Djokovic, due to his physical fitness and health, is not necessarily able to win the other three Grand Slam championships, because we saw that he had some health problems during the Australian Open and it is absolutely not a fact that Djokovic would have won if Medvedev had been able to draw him into a four-or five-set game.

Yes, this young talent has all the tools to beat the big 3, we have seen them in the past, they really can do it. But it boils down on their mind though, I would have to believed that majority of them are still intimidated when they are facing either Djokovic, Nadal and Federer in any court.

That's why David Nalbandian has a point, he has been there, and he did it (although we can argue that the big 3 is not yet on their peak, while Nalbandian is at his prime). Nevertheless, I will have to agree that most of the time, when you face the best in any sports, you got to believed that you can win against them. And they should focus 100% on that.

Medvedev will be at world no.2 if he reaches Rotterdam Finals. The last time someone other than Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Murray occupied the top 2 spot was in July 2005. You can understand how dominant the big 4 have been for so long. Its incredible.
