There are a lot of people wanting to call of the Australian Open due to a couple of players contracting the virus and now officials are worried that it could come into Melbourne even though these two players are in Doha. Some are wanting for the AO to be pushed back to be played later in the year but so far the Victorian government is allowing the tournament to go ahead so we shall see how this plays out.

Yeah, it's weird though, those that are infected are obviously not allowed to play in the AO this year so there's no need to panic or whatever, the schedule has been push through already and there are players who are inside Australia for the quarantine period before the official games this February.

It will be a disappointment for players and fans alike it there will be another postponement.

nothing will happen, AO is going to to played normally, they shouldn't have started it in the first place if they're going to stop it half way through, they know what they're doing, at least i hope so, tennis is my favorite sport to bet on.

Its pretty simple. They will test all the players when they land in Australia and will be quarantined until the results are out. So, there's no concern about the tourney. Just like the NBA in the bubble, there will be restrictions on what players can and cant do while participating in the Aus Open. So, there shouldn't be a problem. A problem arises if a player is found to have contracted COVID mid tourney. Until then, it should all be pretty smooth. Could be inconvenient for the players while they train and warm up for the matches but as a spectator. It should be just fine. A lot of people are skipping Aus Open because of the restrictions. So, lets see how it goes.

It must be very hard right now for sports athletes with the lock down around the world as it will be tough to stay fit during this. I know there are ways to stay fit however it won't be the same as practising on a tennis court which so many do. Its looking like we won't see any sports return this year which can help Federer however he will then need to work on his fitness and not being able to practice on courts it he may find it hard to reach peak fitness.

Given that Roger Federer is still in recovery, I'm sure that he will extend his rehabilitation until everything has settled down. I will consider Federer an elite athlete (who wouldn't?) so for me it's going to be easy for him to recover and return to his peak form. They also have high level trainers to keep them fit in this time and I'm sure they have their own home gym to keep most of the athletes busy if the games are going to be suspended throughout the year.

@vella85 I beg to differ as these are high paid athletes who can afford the best dieticians, and hire professional personal trainers to help them remain fit during this lockdown. As far as Federer is concerned it’s probably his last year, and it’ll be a miracle if he can continue next year too as he’s aged, and has suffered many injuries too hence I feel it’s the perfect time for him to retire from the sports at the end of the year.

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/tennis/1219140/Roger-Federer-planning-to-retire-in-a-different-way

It was reported that Roger Federer is doing good in his recovery, according to Ivan Ljubicic,

https://www.tennisworldusa.org/tennis/news/Roger_Federer/84883/ivan-ljubicic-provides-positive-updates-on-roger-federer-s-recovery/

So we really don't know when the games are going to resume, if he is completely heal by the time everything has calm down and the Covid-19 virus has somewhat contained, then probably Roger will retain (timeline for his return is June of this year). So it's really up to his body and performance and he come back and see how able his body. But I doubt that he will retire this year though. I feel that he will stretch it out until he doesn't have it anymore.

This is an interesting take on it...something that I haven't considered.

From what I can understand is that the main concern isn't the players but the officials in each of the players team and a lot of them are coming from hot spots around the world. As I said the Victorian government has already said that the tournament will go ahead and I just think the people calling for it to be postponed are just upset because the Melbourne Grand Prix has been postponed until November so they seem to think the AO should as well. Just as long as everything goes well we should be fine.

When they decided to start it, there's no news about the second strain of the virus, so that's the new thing that they have to considered. Yes, safety protocols have been set, players are being quarantine as of the moment. But they can't discount the fact that the new strain, could really tip the scale from continuing or not if Australia has this strain already.

Of course, we do hope that it will continue this February as we wanted to see high level tennis games again.

The Guardian had just shared the news that Andy Murray could miss Australian Open after positive Covid-19 test.
It seems unlikely that Murray will get a chance to perform at the AO given the very strict rules in this tournament.

Well from what I saw on the news yesterday here in Australia, Sandgren is allowed to come play in the AO even though he did test positive to the virus in November but with Murray it has come at the worse time and for sure the Victorian government won't allow him into the state which is a shame as this could be Murray's last year playing.

Ouch, hope that Murray can recover soon. Just bad timing for him to be contracted with the virus since AO is just around the corner. Regardless of the name, if you have the virus then it's automatic no go for you.

I do hope though that once the tournament gets underway, there will be no positive test for players because we don't want to see playing good in the tournament and then suddenly tested positive, and it could also affected the whole tournament.

Australian Open 2021 really didn't start well.
I just read this news: ''Forty-seven players to quarantine in Melbourne after Covid cases on flights. Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka and former US Open champion Sloane Stephens are reportedly among those affected.''
AO seems to be facing very serious problems right now, and even before the start of the competition.
Maybe the organizers should have waited with the start of this competition?
These are already very serious problems that have nothing to do with sports but affect all tennis players.
What do you think?

Yes this is not good news at all. I just don't understand why players are boarding planes with other passengers, you would think that all the players would come together after being tested before boarding the plane. There now could be a chance that the AO gets called off or maybe pushed back but from what I understand, the Victorian government doesn't want to do that and wants to go ahead because they are worried about losing the Grand Slam to another country. This is the problem now, do you protect the people or worry about losing the Grand Slam to another country and right now its looking like its the money that's more of a concern then the people.

Dang, this is very upsetting news, yeah I wouldn't be surprised if either the tournament are going to be pushed again or totally cancelled because of this very sad news. Dilemma for the government, I really don't know what is the best next step for now.

If it push through then we will see less players in the field, I do hope though they going with the February date  with very strict health protocols, otherwise no AO this year.

It's very difficult to control such a large number of tennis players and such incidents are always possible and expected.
What will happen in the end and whether this tournament will be held as planned or will be postponed probably no one can say for sure, at least for now.
Unfortunately, I personally think there is a real possibility of postponement of the tournament and also a complete cancellation if situation become worse.

The players getting upset about the quarantine doesn't make sense because they knew that this could happen even before they landed in Melbourne. There was a conference call with the players but a lot of the top players didn't attend the call and now make out they didn't know about this. I think that they should all be grateful that the tournament is going ahead and that every player earns 100k in the first round anyway. I would sit in quarantine for 14 days to earn 100k. 70 players are now in quarantine with 5 people associated with the event have tested positive to the virus so it is going to be a very difficult task to keep this under control and for the virus not to get out into the public which is the main concern right now.

I can promote your project on X to my 100k+ followers for a reasonable price. Just DM me for prices.

Right, so now comes the blaming period, LOL, that's really said knowing that we are still in the quarantine and most players not even the top, really knows the condition but they chooses to go because after all they love the sports. Money is good, I agree, but this players needs to understand the current situation and shouldn't complain. We don't want other cancellation and everyone's cooperation is needed 110% so that this tournament will happen without any major glitch.

More bad news from Australia, ''Two more players 'test positive' amid quarantine row''.
How this will affect the tournament and what if there are more infected players?
Tournament organizers now really have a very difficult job preparing this tournament.
It seems to me that the chance of postponing the tournament is increasing.

I agree mate. Yes I can understand that it will be hard for the players but they must also understand that we are living in very difficult times and that they should be grateful that the tournament is going ahead. Well we hope it still is going ahead as more officials and players are testing positive to the virus which is not a good sign.

I'm now thinking that maybe the tournament should of been pushed back to maybe early March and just lose some of the smaller tournaments because we all want to see the Grand Slams being played this year.

Yes, it could be a good and valid argument. Push back the tournament for a month  and then see how it goes if players will return as negative or positive. Then obviously, those who are positive can't play. And then some of the minor tennis tournament should be push or totally cancel to give way to the more important and big tournament in the future specially Grand Slam event. I'm sure players will understand that, afterall we are still in the pandemic and everyone should be adjusting to situations.
