I've been doing a bit more work on a possible solar staker setup using a C.H.I.P. small computer. This is a low powered Linux computer (similar to the original Raspberry Pi in performance) but comes with built in storage, wifi, bluetooth and battery controller. I've been running a wallet on this device for just over a month and it seems to have been working well and generating some coins through staking. It's also coped with going offline and loosing power a few times as the battery gets drained.
Obviously to be useful as a solar staker it needs to be able to run from solar power, and keep running from a battery when there's not enough solar energy. I've started some work on this by testing a couple of different lipo cells. With one battery I've tested I'm able to get around 16 hours of runtime and it took around half the time to re-charge. I've got some more tests to do about recharge rates to see if it can be charged faster if given enough power. I'm currently waiting on a couple of small solar panels and hope to get some idea of what might be required once those arrive. Obviously solar output will depend on time of year and location so won't be the same for everyone.
There's also some talks happening behind the scenes about how it should be possible to use this solar staker with some ideas for providing a local web interface as well as the possibility for a small LCD screen. I've also been looking at how things like battery state can be queried from code and as I get anything useful I'll try and integrate that into the IRC bot that runs on this same CHIP.
I am very excited about CHIP and that my CHIP will ship next week. I have opened communication with the manufacturer of CHIP in regards to a possible bulk order in the near future.

Our good friend GrumpyTiger is experimenting with a solar-powered Pine64 staking EverGreenCoin. He is wrapped up with some personal matters, but he said I could share his picture with the community.

That looks awesome - I need to get myself one of those =) I'd probably need some backup power over here in the UK as we don't often get sunlight =)

how did you get a C.H.I.P computer when they say they aren't shipping until october? just going off their website, maybe they are sold elsewhere? im very interested in this computer and your idea of using it for solar staking

All those had been shipped as of January this year. They have been selling them in batches of preorders since. https://bbs.nextthing.co/t/pre-order-shipping-updates-scaling-up-c-h-i-p-production/7282

^^ahh my mistake, im always a day late and a dollar short, especially with technology. the solar staking reminds me of solar coin, not to hijack the thread, but is there any communication with the solar coin group? perhaps a partnership in the future? cross promotion maybe at the very least could be advantageous to both coins/groups. just a thought.

That looks awesome - I need to get myself one of those =) I'd probably need some backup power over here in the UK as we don't often get sunlight =) I live in Ohio where we have much overcast most all of the year from the great lakes. In the winter when we have very few daylight hours, it seams like we don't see the sun for days. I have never had the pleasure of visiting the UK but, I did have a once in a lifetime journey to Ireland, thanks to my crypto involvement. We are planning for areas like yours and mine, starmman, and designing a way more panels/batteries can be added. We also, as of Monday, are adding the ability for the EGC solar staker/miner to be plugged into a wall outlet for those that live in a flat/apartment that may have little or no daylight inside nor the ability to place a device outside. The pictures device is not the device we are presently designing the EGC solar staker/miner around. Because we are aiming for a price under 100 USD we need to focus more of that cost on panels and batteries, we are designing around a CHIP. The Pine64 is an interesting device and so are the solar packs GrumpyTiger has pictured. But the Pine64 seems to be an overkill that would need even more panels and more batteries to run, pushing costs far above the target. The EGC solar staker/miner will also not have a keyboard nor a mouse as it will be accessible via a web browser on the same attached local network. We also are experimenting with a small LCD, which may be an optional add-on. We are doing our very best to design the EGC solar staker/miner as a product that can be used in as many geographical locations as possible. Community ideas or comments are greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

There has been parallels and comparisons made in the past. Actually, I was just in a meeting where SolarCoin was brought up by a meeting participant that had a less-than-desirable experience working with that project. I myself have never had any direct communication with them but, of course respect them for their like-minded project and the great progress they have made with it. I personally feel that one of the many advantages EverGreenCoin has is the intent to serve a much broader spectrum, and not a specific niche of 'green'. It might come as a surprise to many of you, because I have never publicly explained, that this is where the name of EverGreenCoin actually came from, Ever[thing]Green. You may notice anytime I spell out Ever GreenCoin, I always do so with a capitol 'G'. I never call it Ever greenCoin as it is often mistakenly refereed to as. It also draws attention to and emphasizes the EGC trade symbol. Actually it is a bit of a pet peeve of mine. I do agree that it might be advantageous for both projects as I think both projects potentially stand to gain from some cooperation. I will approach them in the future and see if their is any possibility of that from their perspective. And no, you're not hijacking the thread at all. Most any discussion is welcome. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

The google hangout, even though it was spur-of-the-moment, was a great success! Myself, Giz, Forsty, and drofxafm had some very good conversation. EverGreenCoin is really blessed with a lot of like-minded community members. The conversation was very enjoyable and fluid. I would like to arrange a scheduled google hangout for this weekend. Either Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, whichever day serves the majority of the community. Myself and everyone else in today's hangout seemed to be open to have it on any day this weekend and at anytime. We are all very willing to be flexible to allow for the attendance of people that might not have an as flexible schedule. So, I would like to open it up for discussion. If you would like to attend an EverGreenCoin community google hangout this weekend, what day and time would be best for you to be able to attend? Thanks everyone! We hope to make this a weekly event. I look forward to it greatly!
