That hadn't occurred to me. I was expecting to smack into an elk and die trundling up there. I might change my plans now.

Nah, I read somewhere that the elks have actually learned to stay away from cars, except for horny bulls, you are much more likely to die hitting a reindeer.

Do time and day of this bull run tell us anything about the most likely immediate cause?

I don't think so... If we look at the 1h interval, it's just steady rise. Around the clock. And on the weekend too.
