Not many investments engender the differences in opinion that Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies create. It’s that volatility, and uncertainty about the technology’s long-term viability, that breeds whirlwind days. The currency has turned evangelists and hackers into paper millionaires overnight, while others see it as a fad, doomed to fade as countries add regulations onto what’s currently a stateless, bankless Wild West of payment tools.

Only invest in BTC what you can afford to lose. Definitely people are making really good profits out of BTC trading / mining. But still you never know when this Bitcoin bubble will burst and your all investment goes to zero.

every investment has some risks, but bitcoins have a few too
the prices might flicker a bit in this year because of some government banning bitcoins but that wont last long
the prices will again go up
bitcoin is an internet currency so if your key is not safe there are chances of being hacked and you losing your money.

Institutional investors, and some of the wealthiest individual investors, already have some options for playing the cryptocurrency market. Through mid-October, 84 new crypto hedge funds that invest in the currencies have emerged, up from 11 in 2016, according to cryptocurrency research firm Autonomous Next. As the numbers suggest, however, these funds don’t have much of a track record. And many of these hedge funds charge hefty management and performance fees (often 2% of assets annually, plus 20% of any profits), eating into returns.

In the long term, the risk is not very great. I'm sure for 5 years, bitcoin will far exceed the price of 20,000 dollars. Another thing is that many other currencies can overtake it and give a greater profitability.

Besides the inherent instability of cryptocurrencies, bitcoin has a disadvantages that come from being the 'most stable of the unstable': the risks of suffering losses is still there, and, as it is so established, it's not gonna bring you much profit either if you don't make large investment. Small, targeted investments require better multiplier, which only new coins have, as a means to sell to a wide number of people.

I find it difficult to answer your questions, about the risks can not be calculated because you know yourself bitcoin moves out of control, no one can guess what will happen .. just rely on instinct

perhaps the development of a quantum computer enabling the simultaneous mining of all possible coins within a given block.  This hazard may already by hedged against by purposeful delay on the next block release.  If the second part isn't implemented (I'm sure it is given the developer community involved) this represents a significant inflationary risk.

There is no risk in bitcoin investment. Because if you invest in a safe coin then the risk will be low.
But remember there is no risk there is no gain Smiley

We know that Bitcoin platform is the bed of roses, but the reality is quite different. Bitcoin has a lot of risks as well. High volatility became the first risk of this virtual currency. Second, your currency is untraceable. Third, you can easily lose your money which has no option of the refund. And the hidden risk is, Bitcoin is not acting anonymously, your transactions are publicly published.

The blockchain software behind Bitcoin makes the digital currency a method of transferring value, but unlike at, say, a bank or real estate company. With blockchain, those expensive middlemen are no longer needed to ensure a transaction takes place as intended, a protection supplied by the blockchain software itself. The result: faster and cheaper transactions.

There’s one big one that worries me about every cryptocurrency: a vulnerability that leads to the collapse of the blockchain.

Basically we don't know the risk in every site if you invest money in a site first is you don't know if the site was trusted there are site that can give you small profit but many site are just scamming people who invested.

You are right, Website's that are scamming people are really out there so it is better to ask for professional people who already invested on different sites if they did not get any problem before investing on a specific cryptocurrency exchanger or holder.

There’s one big one that worries me about every cryptocurrency: a vulnerability that leads to the collapse of the blockchain.

If there was such a vulnerability, then it could have been out in the open long back. The  Bitcoin blockchain in doing quite good, and the only issue with regarding to it is the high fee and the inability to include more than 2,000 to 2,500 transactions per block. This is quite inadequate to include all the transactions being made by the users.

I just wanted to know that, what amount of risk is there in investing in bitcoins.
Right now i am planning to buy btc approx 3-4 btc and just hold them as i guess the price of bitcoin will increase in future and i will get some good profit. But i want to know what is the risk involved. Can bitcoin price decrease and is this right time to buy the bitcoin.
You should think about it carefully before investing here in bitcoin because you will always meet some risks along the way. Some of the risks are the chances that the value of bitcoin will go down and the possibility of scammers and frauds are everywhere that's why you need to be very careful. There are also some instances where a certain ico or campaigns will fail so it would be a better idea if you are not going to depend on bitcoin only.
Nothing is risk here you can invest here as much as you can because bitcoin is very safe and sound for investment some banks have also accepted bitcoin and that’s why every country is going to make bitcoin legal because they know how bitcoin is trust worthy and even billionaires are also investing here which mean bitcoin is a very good currency for investment I’m also investing here from a long time and it risky help me.

Number one rule in trading, don’t invest/gamble more than you can afford to lose.   The level of volatility involved in bitcoin trading in particular and crypto trading in general is such that nobody is really sure of what is around the corner in terms of up or down trends.  This is made even more difficult now because bitcoin instead of its primary function of being a means of payment is more a store of value hence even non crypto people are investing in it.  IMHO it’s even more risky than conventional forms of trading like stocks and shares.

BitcoinBTC is an virtual currency and highly volatile so their is lot of risk in bitcoin investment. Bitcoin runs under a software know as blockchain. If due to some reason blockchain fail to attract different organisations towards it then their will be a negative effect on bitcoin price. At the starting time of bitcoin many businesses use bitcoin for their business but now they have show no interest towards it because of its volatile nature. Cyber attack on the bitcoin world is one kind of serious threat, which also affect the investment market of bitcoin. Bitcoin is not widely accepted in many country it is still ban so these things also affect its price. So in my opinion their is a lot of risk in bitcoin investment.  Sad

The risk depends on your investment the higher you invest the higher you loose when dump but versa when pump you will get too much profit too but the only advice i can give is invest what you can afford to. Lose ... And buy bitcoin when dump and sell when pump
