No seriously, why would anyone need to hide their IP address from their financial transactions?

Because we want to be... anonymous.

If you don't hide your IP address, you can be unmasked by tracking the IP as opposed to tracking your wallet address.  Even with Darksend.

Because denominating DRKs and then sending a part of those from the same IP address obviously hurts the privacy aspect.

Thanks Evan. Your patience to achieve total technical perfection rather than to be a wannabe coin mixing fad will pay off for all of us soon. I love how you think long term.

Agree thumbs up Evan! You and team really rock!
Finally a great update. We are slowly getting there. Hopefully we will see a release in August and that it will be flawless.

You send money to John.

When you send money to John, you announce to the network "Hey I'm sending money to John" and when you announce it you use your IP address to talk to the network. If you are on the network and listening you can go "Hey this guy is sending money to John from this IP address." Since your IP address is unique to you (at least your WAN IP is, for most people), it's easy to deduce who sent the payment if you have the tools available to you to do so.

So let me get this straight.

Every machine on the inter web has a unique identifier.

Just as you would address a letter to send in the mail, computers use the unique identifier to send data to specific computers on the inter web.

So if I send transactions out and people can see my IP, they know who I am, and can track my spending?

If your grandma were sending an unsigned love letter to her boyfriend, using her actual return address isn't the best idea.  Your grandpa might put 2 and 2 together.

Please call it internet. That's its name.

The nodes your wallet is connected to, gain knowledge of your payment from your machine first. So they can at least guess that it originated from your machine('s IP address). Of course your ISP knows which customer is assigned which IP address, so if you have access to that info or can gather other data that connects you and your IP address, your payment can be connected to your identity.

I suggest you visit wikipedia and check the Bitcoin article to see how cryptocurrencies work Smiley
