I've been reading your and Tao's guides over and over again for days... I have not figured out even one damn thing for setting up a masternode. I cannot understand even one sentence from either of your guides, and I've been using Linux since before there was Gentoo...

I'm glad it helps some people get nodes up, but it hasn't spread any understanding, and I won't be running any MNs blindly without an explanation. I do not just follow steps. Ever. Period. Not a snowball's chance in hell.

It appears there is someone that is pulling all the masternodes from the wallet and running scripts on them to hack in.

Is this a surprise?

And in this case they was able to gain access via SSH, so it had nothing to do with problems in the wallet/daemon/masternode itself.

As suspected.

• The firewall was not running, so all ports were open
• Root access via SSH was allowed
• OpenSSL v1.0.1f was installed on the server
• The password to unlock the wallet was still in bash history command
• The root password was less than 8 characters

My recommendations:

• DO NOT allow root ssh access
• Only open port 9999 in your firewall to the world
• Only open port 22 (SSH) to a trusted ip
• Setup SSH to use certificates for logging in
• Do not run any application on the server that you dont have to
• Encrypt you wallet
• Clear your bash history

All common sense... It worries me that a rote list is being handed out. These are things a person should know if they're going to support the network...

If a person doesn't know this much already, they have no business running any server on the internet, much less a masternode. Following some rote guide line by line will only give them a false sense of security and no ability to handle the future.

Frankly, I'd prefer all ports but 9999 and TOR Listen be secured by port knocking. Re-direct all externally accessible services through TOR so that they only listen to localhost and no known .onion exists for those services to anyone but yourself. Since TOR uses renzdezvous points, the TOR port being open grants them access to none of the services passing through it, and no idea what the traffic is, where it goes, what it's for, etc... They can't protscan a port that doesn't exist. SOCKS5 stream for the win. Using TOR for this has massive advantages completely removed from it's anonymity/encryption/obfuscation functions.

I re-route all my SSH through TOR. SSHD doesn't even listen to the NIC, localhost only. Also, the entire SSHD service is port knocked to trigger "service sshd start" on top of not even listening to the NIC... Run knock sequence then ssh through socat .onion... Nobody even knows it's there... Nobody knows the address but me. Logs can't even give me away since I'm coming in through tor... If only DPR had used his head... ;-)

He learned the HARDWAY how not to setup your masternode. I will be putting together a list of things to check and an ISO and AMI for people to use with MOST of the issue addressed, you will still be responsible for checking any think I missed and verify it works for your setup.

His lose WILL help everyone else by showing what you MUST setup so please help him where you can. I will pull some together myself to send.

Yup. Can't understand a word of it...

It pointed me to vultr, which was easier to manage and $1 cheaper than my usual place. So that helped. The rest is total gibberish, no clue what the hell is going on with any of it.

I'm getting the feeling that these guides make it about 100 times harder than it really is. It's like listening to my mom describe her windows computer problems. She can talk for 45 minutes to say something that could be a 2 word sentence...

Not trying to offend. Clearly some people get use of these guides. I find them incomprehensible. Iv'e spent days re-reading them over and over again. I've learned absolutely nothing. I'll probably just ignore them and go my own way, and then write a 5 sentence guide of my own... ;-)

I might give this one a try tomorrow. I wish I could find one that just gets to the point and explains it... Tante's has been the most useful, so far, but I'm just going to have to set aside all other projects and sift them for the facts and remove all the jibber jabber. So much blah blah blah, zero explanation, occasional blind "copy this command" with nothing at all about why or what it does... I get the feeling the people writing the guides don't understand it themselves, which is why there is no explanation. No hostility intended, I do feel it's irresponsible to run a web-connected server having no clue how it works... But greed drives people to copy/paste and really all I'm seeing is a very, very verbose copy/paste outline... I don't do that. I understand, then I don't need to know any "steps" at all. I just do it because it makes sense.

One thing that I seem to be learning... It doesn't matter if the "masternode genkey" is run from the local or the remote, so long as the same key is in both .conf files... flare says do it remote, tante says do it local... I still haven't figured out what tao says, it's like his guide is written in Japanese, I almost never have any idea what he's talking about...

I'm sorry, it's also a bit old now.  GhostPlayer does a great job as I understand it, explaining.  Maybe he should walk ya through it?  I'm just using amazon, so it's super easy to protect, as the iptables are automatic.  Just try to do basic ddos, and that's it.  But I'd do that, why shouldn't you put your coins to work?

It looks like it will be a very long time, if ever, before I run a masternode. I'm terminating all my vultr machines since I can't do anything with them. No sense in paying for all these instances when they're not doing anything.

Just ignore it.  It's because the network is waffling between 10.14 and 10.15.  None of it really means anything.  My Masternode was offline according to the MN list thingy and I still got paid.  If you fret, and mess with it, it'll probably only make you less likely to receive a payment.  Right now, we still have one or two rogue pirates, who's technique is corrected in 10.15.  So none of us are getting paid fully again (not too bad though) and soon enforcement for 10.15 will be turned on and we'll be normalized again.

BTW, I'm not sure, but I don't think instant transactions will require a hard fork.  Anyone know for sure?  I think also, since that change will not change the payouts, that we won't have anyone balking at updating (to grab as much as they can while they can) like we do now and last time.  Anyway, the sporks are working out perfectly regardless

I can't get past even a few sentences before I'm completely lost and I'm not sure if it's even a structured sentence. I've re-read them all dozens of times and I know nothing more than I did before I heard the word "masternode."
