Georgem we have to tell the story, clearly and concisely.

Please do so. Absolutely.

But in the process of it, don't belittle any fan created material. (I am not saying that you specifically have done that, but in general)

The one has nothing to do with the other.

Both are essential, and must coexist.

Absolutely agree. Both are essential. But the word Official needs to be used sparingly and apply to particularly polished representative communications.

Nothing saying community/ fan/ unofficial things won't make the grade, just that distinction is what got me personally into this debate.

I still believe that #getintothedark & The Darkcoin Chameleon were (are) a nonsense that hurt because it had been perceived as not serious, while semi-official representative of the Darkcoin community, and as such is a spitting image of the key problem, outlined above in the red.

I think now you are just mean.
How could fan work possibly ever be hurtful to the thing it celebrates?
When has fan art ever hurt music or movies or books, etc?

Unfortunately, it might come across that way...but that's certainty not what I intended.

For example, if a fan uses the "Brand Name" twitter feed for posting their own opinions etc...then of course it could damage the integrity of the brand. I had to unfollow darkcoin on twitter because it sounded like a p&d account.

This reminds me that there is an important part of darkcoin business that we haven't really made public yet (not to my knowledge)

Bitcoin is not a "brand" (atleast not in the sense of a product or identity). Everybody can put "bitcoin" in his company name, product or service.
And this is obviously a very important part of bitcoins success story.

If this isn't the case with darkcoin, then we should really straight away clarify this once and for all.

Who owns the darkcoin name?
Who owns the darkcoin logo?
How are they licenced, etc...

Can I go ahead and create a software firm and call it darkcoinsoft.com ?
Can I implement the darkcoin logo in my company logo?

Okay. Sounds good.

I'm pretty much supportive of all the work people are doing either as part of the core team or in isolation. And I've been tweeting with the #darkcoin tag 3 or so times per day too. Certainly the energy level of individuals on here and DCT is fantastic.

Yes, I believe this is correct too. We need a higher level message that's core and consistent and lots of grass roots work from individuals and groups within the DRK community.

Thanks for the interaction and ideas

I agree with all of you that there needs to be something official.

Much like we have this one official github, and the one actual official darkcoin version to use. And the one official website.

All this discussion is long overdue to finally "legally" define what fans/customers/users/merchants are allowed to do with the "brand" darkcoin (I hate to call it that).

People should be allowed to use the name darkcoin for darkcoin related stuff...
But it shouldn't be allowed for a firm to come along and use the name "darkcoin" for their new washing machine, or something.

Well, I am not sure, I would totally buy this washing machine if I needed a second one and had spare money to throw away.
Can you imagine sitting in front of it and staring at the big D while it tumbles the clothes around.

But hey I am an anarchist, even if someone wanted to call something not darkcoin related this way, I wouldn't care. It would just be strange. lol

The only problem I see with the Darkcoin at this moment in time is a lack of direction in its philosophy.

Aren't you mistaking philosophy with promotion? I think since the start darkcoins philosophy has been lightyears ahead of all the other coins.
It singlehandedly started the whole anonymous coin movement, and it remains the flag ship of cryptocurrencies that is sailing far out in uncharted waters.

You are correct. I did mistake the philosophy - that was clearly stated from Evan's original withe paper - with the promotion of it. Nothing wrong with the messy message during the adoption process but still...

Being a fan is one thing, setting up a perception the said fan is almost an official representative of the coin and its community, on Twitter, is another. I did try to help Tao and I always said that I admire his efforts, but am I not having a right to express my opinion without being accused of being mean?

The percieved speed of development in crypto comes mainly from this giant "cambrian explosion" like outgrowth coming from all the latecomers, opportunists and scammers... who want a piece of the cake.
..but remember that bitcoin just silently, patiently sits there, and hasn't even gone out of beta phase yet. It's still Version 0.9.3 !
If you want to gauge the speed of crypto world, don't look at the altcoins, look at bitcoin!  Cool

Again, my bad for not being crystal clear. "Development in crypto world," was not a reference to Bitcoin development version but to the developments in adoption of the BTC as money / financial asset / store of value, you name it; I was referring to Bitcoin acceptance rate. Over 30,000 businesses are accepting BTC. I mean even PayPal, as seen in their payment hub, has integrated Bitcoin much faster that anyone has expected.

So, perhaps I should have said the speed of developments around Bitcoin is mind-boggling.

Visibility is everything, so say:

    long list
    ...

I totally agree with all of that.
And people will slowly start doing all that when the time is ripe.

Thanks for the clarification.
On second thought I don't think that we disagree on anything.
I think what we need is some clear cut definition regarding darkcoin brand etc... and every confusion will go away.

I tried this morning and they answered very fast that they didn't accept Darkcoin. If you have a minute please write them, it would be amazing to get their attention. They are one of the biggest VPN companies.

Done. I told them that as "a user of both Private Internet Access and Darkcoin, I think Private Internet Access™ would be perfectly aligned with the only one privacy oriented crypto currency, that is Darkcoin," so if 1,000 ++ people (there are more than 1,800 registered users on darkcointalk) ask them to start accepting DRK...

I'd like to thank eduffield and the other developers for this critically important evolution in virtual currency. DarkCoin is what bitcoin should have been. Some might call it "Bitcoin 2.0" but would do better by saying: "DarkCoin is digital cash." - Child Harold - February 28, 2014

Sorry, i thought you would get what i meant, perhaps i should of said "Official twitter feed" instead "Brand Name"

Anybody can put darkcoin in their username, but when it comes from the official account...that's a different story.

Bad timing for me, I renewed my annual subscription a few months back...but I will send them an email saying I would have paid in Dark if I had the option. They sometimes run promo codes as well which would bring the price down to 1-2drk for a month, I will see if they will run something like that for Dark users.

Not much point asking for all this if it goes unused, any of you guys willing to part with a 1-2drk and get PIA for a month?

Can't speak for others, but I do. My annual contract with another VPN expired recently and I'm trying different ones paying month to month Smiley

It would be great to be able to mention one well know brand (kind of!) accepting darkcoin.

okok, but my question regarding "brand" still remains unanswered.

Can I start a business called darkcoinsoft.com (or something like that) and reuse the darkcoin logo?

Or do I break some darkcoin foundation rule with this?
