Two important lessons: 1. Never underestimate your enemy. 2. The fact that you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

If government's were just stupid, they would at least once make a mistake in our favor. If the markets were as predictable as the relentless march of governmental power acquisition, you could leverage one FRN into a fortune--but by then it might be worthless.

I have been told that I have been overly cautious in my dealings on this site and my few dealings with exchanges, because everything we do here is legal.  My concern has never been with my jurisdiction today, it has always focused on what it might become tomorrow. Even if this pronouncement turns out to only apply to exchanges, do not doubt that at the very least you will be required at some point to have some sort of "easily earned" license, and "easily complied with reporting requirements" to use any crypto-currency. The sheeple have already consented to the basic principles, and Bitcoin aficionados are already bleeting for it. It has already been noted here how wealth tends to change one's ethics. The Bitcoin foundation, and millionaires will be of no help. It is in their best interest to conform. They are the good guys who want to be regulated--it protects them from... US!

Consider the fundamental right to use your own property and travel unhindered on public right-of-ways, provided you were not degrading the public's property for personal gain. Commercial enterprises were legitimately required to get "Driver licenses" because their cattle "drives" or taxi or truck "drivers" were profiting at public expense and degrading public property. Later, governments leveraged public fear over the mayhem that would ensue from unqualified operators using their inventions in public to unintentionally murder people in the streets. Mass producers of these new-fangled transportation devices urged governmental regulation in order to restrict their competition protect public safety. The sheeple clamored for the special status of "licensed driver" not realizing that traveling with your property was a protected constitutional right, and that "Driving" was a legal term applied to transport for commerce. Today the precedent is established, and there is no going back. Few today even realize what true freedom looks like. They expect that you need governmental permission to do anything, as opposed to being allowed to do anything that is not illegal, or restricts another's liberties. Today Americans are free because they have the most generous government on the planet. Look at all the "rights it grants them!" (Sic)

It may be time for a number of you to start developing reputations with more secure personas and consider retiring those which have so much personally identifiable information. I certainly hope much thought is being given to the jurisdiction and better yet, obscuring of masternodes and wallets. I rather doubt that AWS will be viable for long.

I don't get the impression that many of you are in the habit of praying; it may be time to start.  May God bless and protect Ethan! DRK was made for dark days... I just hope it is ready in time.

Peace to you all,

Strix

Just to add my 2 duffs.......

We are all in Crypto to make money.  Say whatever you want, but that is a core fact.

Peoples' first impressions are important.  Personally, I would hit the back button FAST if I saw a video about a coin I was researching that looked like a feeble attempt at being funny produced by a bunch of fanboys.   I have thousands of dollars invested in this project, I would like to see something serious and professional.

Quote
I repeat: THIS IS NOT THE OFFICIAL VIDEO!!!

Do you guys understand? I can't put it any simpler...

I hope you realize that nobody outside of this circle will know that.

I understand the desire to just make it light and funny, but that shouldn't be how people first see DRK.  I feel the same about the twitter account spam.  It should be serious, should not sound like a car salesman, and it should be infrequent.  Seeing 30 silly tweets a day makes me unsubscribe from anyone.

Not trying to ruffle anyone's feathers but this seemed like a good time to share my long standing opinions.  This isn't Dogecoin ffs.

I kindly disagree.

Something tells me that darkcoin price will explode once we see lots and lots of fans producing their own versions of promo videos, funny videos, tutorials, reviews, etc...

More decentralization is necessary. More independent agents acting on their own, kinda like masternodes in a way.

If we wait for "darkcoin officials" to approve every video then we will go nowhere.

Ofcourse darkcoin has to have an official face, and this will be represented over at darkcoin.io and the respective social channels attached to it.

If I stumble on a fan video of a new coin , first thing I do is go to the official site and ann thread to check the coin, I don't let the fan video influence me any further. Why should I?
It's an appetizer, nothing more. First the fun meme, but then the cold facts!

So dont discard the work coming from fans. They invest their own time and money, and this is more valuable than anything.  Smiley

I realize some people have that attitude and can be marketed to in that way.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the 18-24 year old college kid is our target demographic.

If someone is a true fan and wants to contribute, awesome..... but please label it "fan made".

Ofcourse.

But remember, we are not a bank. We don't want to have a campaign like JP Morgan does. (or do we?)
Just look how bitcoin has emerged as its own economy thru hundreds of individual podcasts, news sites, etc... all basically started as "fan made"...
None of them ever needed to mark itself as "fan made"... because nobody ever thinks of bitcoin as this "corporate identity" we have to delimit ourselves from, so as not to get sued or something.

Yes, there is a darkcoin foundation (is it official yet?), and yes there are fans, but in the end there is just darkcoin.

EDIT: or let me phrase this differently... I think for bitcoin, the madbitcoins guy is much much more important than the official video at bitcoin.org or the work that the bitcoin foundation has done.

IMHO, what darkcoin needs is more fancy hats and less suits.

Dear me, I'd have to quote so many great opinions from these past few hours... so here goes my 0.2 duffs

I work professionally in a specific area of the entertainment field. Image is everything when it comes to promotion.
One thing is an official video, the other is fun-lovin´fan work.

I was thinking exactly what Kai posted. A simple and "stupid", extremely sober and professional animated short video, to serves as basis for the gist of Darkcoin in general. Then eventually sub-sequent videos for the finer details, tutorials, in-depth explanations, etc...

This is NOT Dogecoin. Humour is dangerous! Add that to "dark markets" and you'll get slammed with "junkie coin" by the media, just 'cos you know how they're like...  Darkcoin can very well become one of the most interesting, important and influential financial tools of our times. Like all things powerful, for the good and the bad. It is crucial that the official video contains all the answers to core questioning upon it's viewing. Copywriting the script (pun not intended) for such a video far outweighs who the hell animates it. Having said that, image is everything, so a killer script + killer video = mass awareness.

It is imperative the Darkcoin's official core image directives represent its phisolophy and it's origins and objectives. A very serious protocol to empower the individual. The individuals of the world need a simple and cross-cultured presentation of what Darkcoin is and what is proposes.

That Bitcoin video, to whom I've shown to many dozen people so far, masters it.

a) shouldn't we wait for darkcoin to mature into the real ecash first?
Or else we would need to update the official video all the time.

b) we are not selling a product, we are creating a new form of money.
Money doesn't stink, it shouldn't have an image. What does that even mean?  Huh
If darkcoin is one day succesful it will be used for all kinds of things, legal and illegal.
If a money can't be used for illegal things then it is worth shit.

If I understand you correctly you want darkcoin to build an image much like paypal has built an image.
But paypal is a totally regulated, controlled and limited form of "money" (well, banking rather) that has absolutely nothing to do with what darkcoin wants to be.

So, when darkcoin tries to go the way of the paypal, will we see news like that, but for darkcoin?

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/24gcka/paypal_blocking_transactions_of_porn_professionals/

You know, you can't have your image be associated with the porn industry, we wouldn't want that.  Roll Eyes
right?

(of course I am joking)

But listen to yourself, already you try to distance yourself from dogecoin etc... what? why?  Huh
What's wrong with funny memes again? Humour is dangerous?
Why can't darkcoin have that too???

What's with all the limitations and cleanliness?

Money should be a faceless tool everybody can use. That's what CASH stands for, and that's the philosophy of ecash.
I don't care if you are a sexworker, drugdealer or ceo of a bank. Ecash will (by definition) have to appeal to everybody, totally non-judgmental.

a) yes and no at the same time... DRK has many core features that will cater 99% of general use. Much like, for example, multisig explanation is not on the official BTC video.

b) We're absolutely selling a "product". Anonymous money. Even just an idea can be a "product". Actually, you sell the "idea", you sell the "product". And read me back, I also mention for the good and the bad. Not my place to judge what is what.

I dont want paypal's nothing at all. Just definitely not humor. Money is no joke. A simple light-hearted swing across DRK's key features and ideals and morals.

I love Dark... but lets face it, depending on media exposure it can be very easily associated with the negatives it can imply. So not suggesting being a corporate, dull, static, robotic thing. Like I said, the official BTC video masters its with very serious talk with a "cartoonish" feel to it, without being silly at all.

Darkcoin should try and build an image around neutrality and secrecy, much like switzerland has built an image around neutrality and secrecy over the past 100 years. (although it starts to crumble because of US influence)

That would make sense.

Neutrality means: we don't care what you use ecash for. It's our philosophy that we don't care!
Secrecy means: anonymity. Even if we wanted to care, we can't, because your money can't be traced, by design.

Now there are an infinite amount of ways how someone can promote "neutrality and secrecy"... both in a funny and serious way.
So why limit yourself?

Exactly. Its says and explains everything without going into anything. For the most, it only invited to get to know it more. Plus, anyone seriously potentially getting into DRK will be very likely not to know BTC already, or at least bump it to it really quick.

Darkcoin should try and build an image around neutrality and secrecy, much like switzerland has build an image around neutrality and secrecy over the past 100 years.

That would make sense.

How can we do that?

I've been away, and not participating in the DCT threads, but I hope to find the time soon. Easy. Make a bullet-list of the main key features of DRK, and why they are relevant, write a script threading those ideas, and animate them.

Simple in nature, torture to master.

Maybe these videos got lost, my original post:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=421615.msg9354938#msg9354938

These guys explain complex idea's easily using animation and simple voice over

If everybody could watch those videos we can tailor a rough script to hand over to the animators. If (for example) we got somebody like guys behind Hungry Beast, that would be beneficial to Darkcoin since they already know understand this type of technology and we wouldn't need to hold their hand too much.

Just an example:
Overview
What is Dark (Privacy and why it matters?)

Features
Darksend (and what it fixes in Bitcoin?)
Instantx (again what it fixes in Bitcoin?)
Masternode network / Tor? system (mention how it improves your browsing security/privacy/anonymity?)

I agree our focus should be on security/privacy/anonymity...much like how Tor is being marketed to users.
Tor infographic:

The darkmarkets will get involved either way, however Darkcoin as a community should distance ourselves from this type of discussion. That doesnt mean we shouldnt help and inform new users, but just keep that type of chatter to a minimum here (like somebody said, it will result in bad press).

Have been following this interaction diligently. Here's my take:

f2000 I completely agree with just about everything you've said and I really appreciate you collating all those examples. I would just caution though (and given the quality of your writing style; this won't be news to you) the need to remember just how limited is a back and forth written interaction in a forum like this on getting to the core of an issue and really understanding where everyone's coming from.

For me I am desperately hoping that professional marketing will happen and happen very soon. There's no doubt Darkcoin has enormous potential; I wouldn't have suffered the losses I have investing my time and money in this and if I didn't believe in its long term potential to be something of tremendous value and utility. What concerns me greatly (and has from the beginning) is the lack of focus and clarity as to just who we are targeting for Darkcoin and what will be the strategy to develop the core messaging to ensure it stays on track to an agreed positioning statement. We have vast number of views on here as to what DRK is going to provide and who the key users/customers will be. The constant reference to getting dark markets to take up adoption and people talking the attractiveness of DRK for gambling, porn, weapons, drugs is very very concerning to me. There's a high level of nerd/geek culture on here and unfortunately nerd/geeks are hopelessly inadequate at understanding how easily branding can go astray and (without careful management) can take a brand down a track that's eventually irrecoverable. We have a very real risk of DRK being subject to an unfortunate set of PR mis-understandings/misapprehensions and being immediately tarnished as a subversive/"dangerous"/criminal tool that no mainstream business would ever touch. I fear that this outcome is highly likely and will relegate DRK to a level of poor credibility and poor acceptability that will make Silk Road look like something mainstream businesses might consider supporting.

Tao I think f2000's point is entirely valid (not withstanding the difficulties of this written communication process we're all involved in on this forum) in that he's saying it's incredibly important to get a video made that's positioned properly, is not "geeky" and is easily understandable by mainstream Internet users who may not know anything about even Bitcoin, let alone the world of Alts. That doesn't mean we have to dumb it down; far from it. The Hungry Beast videos he posted are testament to how you can take relatively complex concepts and package them for wide audience acceptability and understandability.

f2000 I think Tao's just trying to point out that using the Bitcoinrush guy is just one avenue and will likely result in some good reach into realms we're not currently reaching. I take your concerns to heart though. 30 seconds in watching his video and it's far from what I'm hoping to see in terms of quality and "unkookiness" (he's funny and all but not what you'd want representing such an important project as the main outbound marketing stream....but Tao I've comprehended what you're saying about him too).

Lots to consider here. I'd really like to hear Evans thoughts on marketing and how we're going to get this thing onto a straight and narrow messaging platform before DRK ends up down some alternative track we'd not really hoped to see it travel. If we want widespread adoption we need to plan how we'll appeal to enough sections of the community that they'll appreciate what DRK is and have trust in using it. That won't happen though an ad-hoc uncoordinated fashion with mixed messaging going here, there and everywhere.

Thanks for taking time to write that up, Im glad I've managed to spark up the discussion. I've taken your point on board regarding only getting so far in this type of discussion (going back and forth). Just to explain myself, I've brought this point up a few times in the previously and it was passed over (which is totally fine), but when I saw Tao's post about BitcoinRush I felt this was my last chance to get my point heard (I also have a fair amount of btc involved and would be disappointed if we released a sub par video which would be the laughing stock of crypto). Like another user said, if this is our first video, it better be good...otherwise people will look back and cringe.

We need mass appeal, not cheap jokes.

We need mass appeal, not cheap jokes.

You will never manage to create a video that everybody likes. (ofcourse I am glad that you try nonetheless to achieve it)
Therefor we need many different iterations of many different ways if we really want to "mass appeal".

I still think that stuff like this is hilarious, and extremely important:

Can you imagine what a real artist could do with such a meme?

But listen to yourself, already you try to distance yourself from dogecoin etc... what? why?  Huh
What's wrong with funny memes again? Humour is dangerous?
Why can't darkcoin have that too???

It can be fun and it can be diverse but the core messaging coming out from the dev and the foundation needs to be "this is a serious open source tool you can depend on for moving millions of dollars anonymously". Dogecoin has a meme of a dog and people that have never heard of it don't even know how to say it properly. It's fun and kooky but it doesn't say "High net worth individual, you can trust us to transact large sums of money. We are a serious organisation and system that's been built for the long haul". That's what this video and core marketing needs to communicate: Trust, Certainty, Backing, Credibility, Efficiency, Security, Anonymity, Privacy. These attributes need to be communicated very succinctly and clearly without kooky memes (not taking away from all the fun stuff you do georgem, which I really appreciate) or silly, whacky stuff. That can all come later along with Mad Bitcoins type of guys doing shows and things but a serious "this is revolutionary development in finance which you should be taking advantage of" needs to be the main message first and foremost.
