Hmm it is certainly controversial, should the referee gave a yellow card instead? Personally, I believe Freuler stopped a direct threat on his goal so yeah it was a correct red card.
BTW, City is leading with 1 goal in the first half.

It was totally a ridiculous red card. How in the hell did the referee make a huge mistake like that. It wasn't cancelled by a VAR decision also. Mendy was not even the last man. If it was the situation, it would be okay of course but it was really an interesting decision.

Regardless of the red card status that many will talk about, Real Madrid presented an excellent first half that exceeded my expectations before and after the expulsion .An ideal spreading among its players to the point that we see Mendy as an attacking heart . City had completely one-sided game against Gladbach. Full control of game and confident 2:0 win. Though, on last minute Borussia had great moment to score, but Ederson was in place. Maybe 2:0 isn't something amazing, but I can't imagine Borussia making comeback.
I didn't watched Atalanta - Real game, so can't give deep analysis of game and red card. In the end, I think it's good result for Real, considering it's away game and they were missing so many players. Atalanta played most of time with 10 players, so, minimal loss isn't worst what could happen. Before 2nd leg game their chances isn't very bad.

Atalanta withstood 86 minutes fighting off Real Madrid in a very closed space. So it would made Real to have just a passive control of the ball to in the middle of the field, especially in the absence of the real striker and the winger who makes the difference in speed.
Mindy goal was so lucky but a fabulous goal with his foot that he doesnt even know how to use when passing.

As for city nothing is going to stop it from dropping points in any game. even when they lost KDB they were expected to lose some points but Gundogan stepped in and filled his shoese.

However, who decided it was the referee! We cannot complain about it because the referee may have his own view of the red card. As a fan, I don't expect to see Real Madrid winning just from a red card or penalty in a match. But it is a usual thing in a football match, we don't need to blame the referee. Noted that it was not a gift, it is a decision made by the referee to accept by all people.

He did fault, the Real's player needed to change his trajectory and he still was in possession of the ball after the fault.

I agree that the referee has a difficult decision in the verge of yellow and red card. In the home stadium of Atalanta, he should give them a yellow card as referee tends to act more soft with home teams.

The early red car is too strict for Atalanta. It is a foul that deserves a card but a red card that is not. Atalanta and Gasperini have to change their tactics and resources on field after the red card. They fighted strongly and managed to close their goal before the moment from Mendy. It is an superb match from Ferland Mendy.

I congratulate for Real Madrid but their problems are still there. They will miss Benzema a lot as their forwards and strikers in the yesterday match played not good. He almost did not take the gift from the referee if Mendy did not make that shot.

Real Madrid can not dominate the game or destroy the Atalanta in more than one hour when they played with one more player after the red car. Without the late goal from Mendy, they would have not won it. Atalanta has nothing to lose in Champions League and they proved how strong they can be in the past season in Champions Leauge. PSG won against Atalanta very late and luckily.

I think the second leg match of this pair will be interesting. Real Madrid need to be very careful with the attacking power from Atalanta even they will play it at their home stadium, Bernabeu. They destroyed Atalanta? Don't know why game you watched but playing the biggest part of the game against 10 man and just win with 1-0 in the last minutes isn't really destroying your opponent.

I also expected Real to play more offensively and to try and put the tie to bed after an early red card to Atalanta. Real is struggling lately which was evident again yesterday and ultimately they deserved the win but can consider themselves a bit lucky because they did score a goal late in the game.

With 0-0 yesterday, I'd consider Atalanta as favorites going into the 2nd leg. This goal will put some pressure off Madrid players and will probably be enough for a comfortable game at the Bernabeu.

Refs have always made some bad calls and spoiled the game but teams have been able to turn results around in their favour.

 On the other hand what we saw last night Atlanta should still have fought to stay in the game and not laying low to show displeasure of the refs unfair decision, this is the champions league that away goal will haunt them, hope in their next fixture the won't come with kid gloves at a grown ups meeting.
