Is it possible to have a mining board with removable mining chips (like CPU socket/slot)?

It would give you an edge over all other manufactures. I really want to support you against the Chinese manufactures.

It's possible to do so, but it would not be feasible or economical to do so. The Rockerbox ASIC is in a BGA (ball grid array) package, which allows for a very high density of electrical connections to the circuit board substrate, as well as lower inductance on the power input and better power decoupling with capacitors. They also conduct heat to the PCB better. Replacing that with a pin grid array socket would make the whole thing bulkier and more expensive. In order to upgrade ASICs, you'd need to keep the electrical signals the same on each generation of chips, which would require a lot of forethought and planning and would make it harder to advance technology with each generation. It would also complicate heatsink design. Using sockets instead of a BGA or QFP package would make the miner slightly slower and more expensive.

I just got a 15 unit batch of SP20's approximately 30 hours ago.  I absolutely love these rigs!!!  However, I am running into an issue with one rig.  It says, "LOOP[0] ON TO:0 (w:38)
0: disabled (Asic all engines fail BIST).

I have IBM 2880W PSU's with breakout boards.  All of the others are running well on these IBM 2880W PSU's except for one I had problems connecting to last night [I will deal with it after I finish my new mining closet in the next couple of days].

I have replaced the PCI-e cord in port 1 of the SP20 and I've changed ports with a new cord on the breakout board.  Yet, it still says, "LOOP[0] ON TO:0 (w:38)
0: disabled (Asic all engines fail BIST)."

I was getting too sleepy last night to continue trouble shooting it.  If someone else has had this issue or has something to offer for me to try, please chime in.

Douglas County PUD is 1.85 cents per kWH.

Do you know something I don't? From what I know, 2014 rates in Douglas are 2.35 cents, or about 2.52 cents once you factor in demand charges. When I talked to them in person last June, they said that rate applies to anything up to 5 MW, after which you have to buy wholesale power from the Bonneville Power Administration exchange (which is more expensive).

Yes, there is a demand charge.  But still dude, 2.35 cents!!!  That beats the hell out of my 10.6 cents in the winter and 12.1 cents in the summer in Alabama.  One can save $22,000.00 each month from a 550kW system versus what I'm paying here in Alabama.  Alabama rates include demand charges, etc...

I'm also aware of the "over 5 MW" exchange pricing.

Any ideas what is up with this 243 degrees Celsius on Loop 0?  I just got 15 rigs less than 24 hours ago.

There is an 8-bit unsigned integer underflow bug that occasionally manifests on Rockerbox (SP20/30/31/35) machines. Any VRM temperature reading that would be less than zero ends up as 255 minus the temperature reading. A temperature report of 243 thus probably means a reading of -12°C. There are a few other bugs that can cause abnormally low temperature readings. The most common one is due to the fact that Spondoolies uses several different models of FETs in their VRM blocks, and the different FET models have different temperature sensor calibrations. If the firmware uses the wrong sensor calibration formula, then you get temperature readings that are off by 20°C or so.

Actually, Grant County has several different rates depending on what type of customer you are. Our rate is $0.021/kWh for the first 50,000 kWh, and $0.018/kWh for each kWh thereafter, plus $4.69 per kW for the demand charge. Total comes to about $0.025. That's the Large General Service rate, which you can get if you're above 200 kW.

Bad ASIC. It may have been damaged during shipping, or it may just be a bad ASIC that slipped through QC. There's almost certainly nothing to be done besides replacing it. Spondoolies might be able to send you a replacement hashboard; you'd have to ask them.

Understood.  Looking forward to working with the new miners.  I'll let you know what DHL asks for.  I upgraded home panel to 400A and put in 220v 20A and 30A circuits.  I have 24A safely usable on the 30A circuits (5280W) with the derated PDUs. Do you think I can run (2) SP31s on each of those circuits as long as I underclock them?

I'd try using a serial cable first, but you probably don't have one. Chances are high that the internal MMC has gotten corrupted or gone bad. I've been using 1 SP30/SP31 each on 16 amp 237V circuits for a while with no problems. I can often stick a little extra on those circuits, like an underclocked SP10. Those are PDU circuits, though, and the breakers are built to international standards and aren't built for the 80% derating factor. Your 30A x 220V circuits are less than twice my 16 x 237V circuits, but I'd expect them to still work even at full speed. (Actually, come to think of it, each two 16A circuits is fed by one 30A circuit in our setup, so the only real difference is 237V vs 220V.) If you underclock your SP30s by 10% or 20%, you'll be quite safe.

The marginal efficiency graph shows the efficiency of a small increment in power. If you step the power consumption on an SP20 up from 1100W to 1200W, you only gain an extra 50 or so GH/s for 100 W in extra power consumption, giving a marginal efficiency of 2.0 J/GH. On the other hand, the overall efficiency at 1200W for an SP20 is about 0.75 J/GH.

The marginal efficiency is a very useful metric for choosing what power settings to run a miner at. You should run your miners at a setting such that the marginal efficiency leaves you at the breakeven point. Right now, 1 TH/s earns about $0.111 per hour. If your power or hosting costs you $0.14/kWh, then your breakeven point would be

[$0.111/(h•TH/s)] / [$0.14/kW•h] = 0.79 kJ/TH = 0.79 J/GH

so you would want to run an SP20 at the setting that gives you a marginal efficiency of about 0.79 J/GH, which turns out to be about 600 W AC.




Some notes:

All tests were conducted on 240V +/- 5V with intake temperatures between 8°C and 18°C.

The SP31s tested used Murata power supplies. The Murata PSUs are more efficient than the Emerson1200 PSUs (about 91.5% vs 88%). The SP30 tested used Emerson1200s. The SP20 used an HP DPS1200FB PSU, which appears to be 90% efficient on 240V.

AC power consumption for the SP35, SP31, SP10 and SP20 were measured using a Dell PDU, and should be accurate to within 20W. AC power consumption for the SP30 was read off of the ASIC Stats page. Previous testing has shown the Emerson1200 and Emerson1600 (in the SP35) to give accurate AC consumption measurements compared to our PDUs.

The DC power measurements of the SP10s and SP20s appear to be miscalibrated. At high power, they appear to be accurate, with our PDU measuring AC consumption that's about 10% higher than the reported DC power consumption. At low power (e.g. 60%), the SP10 reports DC power consumption 4% *below* the AC consumption, and the SP20 reports DC consumption equal to AC consumption. Power measurements from Murata power supplies show an inverse pattern, and are very inaccurate (and biased for low readings) at full power output, but tend to be accurate at 80% of max power or below. Do not rely on the power readings from SP10s, SP20s, and Murata SP30/31s for anything important.

The SP10s tested were all from a moderately slow corner batch.

A few of the max power datapoints might be missing from some machine types (e.g. SP10, SP35) to simplify testing. Most testing was done using voltage limiting (600 mV < start voltage = max voltage < 700 mV, or 750 mV for SP20). The SP30 was tested using power limiting, which is part of why its graph is slightly wavy.

At very low voltages or power limits (< 620 mV, roughly, for both Rockerbox and Hammer), some ASICs on a machine will fail to start up. This results in rapidly dropping hashrate and power consumption towards the left end of the graphs, as well as potential system instability, with slight improvements in efficiency. Different ASICs will have vastly differing minimum voltages for operation, which means that some machines will be capable of much lower power operation when run at minimum voltage. I've seen a 25% (430W) difference in minimum power between two SP31s from the same batch, for example. However, the difference in efficiency between these machines at their minima was smaller, at 0.50 vs 0.45 J/GH. YMMV (your miners may vary).
