im having a really big problem trying to install on ubuntu 12.04? does anyone have a guide step by step commands would be greatly appricated.

I had the same problem. The fix was to eventually install boost 1.55 and i think g++ 4.8

anyway try this. It can be found on monero.cc :

git clone https://github.com/monero-project/bitmonero

cd ~ && wget https://www.dropbox.com/s/3pclp7sm94edmxl/install_monero.sh && chmod +x ./install_monero.sh && ./install_monero.sh

The second line  will take some time but it will manage to install them. To be sincere i havent test this line on 12.04. I did it manually somehow by adding repos...I cant remember exackly what repos i added.

Yah i tried that exact line they had, but it seems like it not working with 12.04 im very confused. driving me crazy!

because this coin is not a bitcoin clone and so there isnt a wallet-qt to just copy and release. There is a bounty for a GUI wallet and there is already an experimental windows wallet...

I like this about Monero, but it seems it was written by cryptographers, not programmers. The damned thing doesn't even compile on Arch, and there are several bugs, like command history not working on Linux. The crypto ideas are top-notch, but the implementation is not.

I'd rather have a cryptographer write my new cryptocurrency and implement novel ideas and then have a programmer fix the bugs.

The other option is to have a programmer write a new cryptocurrency without sound cryptographic theories...that doesn't sound like a winning combination.

You can easily fix bugs, but you can't easily fix fundamental conceptual problems.

Very true. But they should have gotten a programmer on their team before they released it.

Right click on the title bar at the top, then go to edit, and paste should be there.

Click the black cmd icon top left on cmd window.  goto properties and check quick edit mode and insert.

Copy wallet address and then click right mouse button to paste into command window.

I just found this coin and I think it's absolutely great to see coins developed by cryptographers.
Perfect anonymity is the next big thing for a real liberal market. Haters/Gov officials are definitely gonna comment with criminal abuse etc., but freedom is much more important.

You need a decent wallet though. Add stability and a good client to the cryptographic ideas and this is gonna be one of my favorites.
Also CPU coins (asic resistant hopefully) are great anyway.

Just used for testing features eg bitcoin testnet, we're using it for pool testing right now.

by the way like the ideas here, looks interesting - the Anon aspect is way over played in my opinion , when i say that i think:

1.people don't care (anyone done a poll here?)

2. there are other economic and political factors that weigh in that actually degrade the idea but i won't go into them.



but the new PoW looks interesting. read the white paper.

An altcoin needs to justify its existence -- it needs to do more than what Bitcoin can do. Much more. Most coins don't, but that's because they're pump-and-dump nonsense, even to their creators.

Monero is going places because it has something that Bitcoin doesn't -- that thing being privacy. Other things like the PoW are bonuses, but they're minor details in the long run. Eventually it'll probably get GPU'd and then ASIC'd and become like Bitcoin. But the privacy stays.

ASIC is fatal for a privacy-oriented alt coin, because it means centralization, which means control of the coin ends up in the hands of the end-user's adversary.

Honestly, you could say the same thing about CPU coins. There are enough idiots out there with computers and who run unpatched software or download obvious malware that it's not hard to make botnets. Get enough mining for one entity, and you have centralization.

The possibility of centralization is not presently avoidable.  The inevitability of centralization is presently avoidable.  The reality is that what people do is trade off cost and benefit.  What matters to me personally is that Monero privacy should become realistically usable, and not destroyed by avoidable threats.  A defense-in-depth strategy is required to deal with unconstrained threats, to make the cost of defeating the system greater than the benefit of defeating the system.

This is one reason I've always felt that if botnets mine (which for the most part they won't), this is a good thing not a bad thing. It pulls the cost of computer owner's negligence back to the owners themselves, incentivizing them to clean up their act. Botnets that mostly attack other people without costing the computer owner anything are much worse.
