Lets say I want to buy bitcoins today and store them for 20 years to use a my retirement fund.  Live comfortably, but don't need to buy a yacht or anything.  How many do you think I would need to buy?

Buying them right now? i would say 5-7 btc but it is really hard to say
nobody know what is going to happen with btc price next month, and we talk about 20 years here, believe me it is goddamn a lot of time
anyway i would say it will constantly rise after some time will pass, when whole btc pool is going to be mined. we will see anyway

How many bitcoins do you need to retire in 20 years, purely depends upon what will be the value of bitcoin at that time. If the price is very high, then only small amount of bitcoins will be enough for you. but if the price s less then even tons of BTCs will not fulfill your needs.

Sure the price will make the huge difference in the ammount of how many bitcoins will be need to retire. The same way as each one of us has a different life style, im able to survive with around 0.50btc montlhy soo to retire i would need something around 200-300 btc should be more then enought.

100 btc or more. As many as you want and will sustain your life until you not work.
i doubt that he will need that much bitcoins in order to retire in 20 years because i think that the price will be much higher than it is right now and we will see much bigger numbers pretty soon hopefully

i think you will need something like 20 bitcoins in order to retire after 20 years because it will be enough money by then to have a great life without having any job

My advice is get bitcoin as much as you can. You never know what bitcoin will be worth in 20 years or so.
So, it's best to get as much as you can get and just hold for now, don't spend it until you're going to retire.

you should have a target to be the benchmark. because if you're just trying to get bitcoin as much as possible, it could be the result does not correspond to retire in the next 20 years. but if it has a target like 100 bitcoin. you can calculate, how much should you get each day, month or year

part of this problem isnt really not having a bench mark.

the main problem is in front of us just too blinded to see, which is can we keep getting large amounts before this value every does explode in the prior 20 years you mentioned.

cause if your volume can make up for the value in some levels I still think its decent.

I would say 50 bitcoins! In 20 years it will be around 10k and 500 grand is enough to retire imo
I think you have to predict the price of the least likely to occur. so you will have a target to get more bitcoin when the price does not correspond to your estimation, probably the price that will occur higher. it is a bonus for you because you have accumulated a lot of bitcoin

well i doubt that it would be enough of that much bitcoins to retire, i would predict that you would need something like 100 bitcoins to become rich enough to retire in just 20 years

$100,000? Not gonna happen, that is too much for dream to happen guys, we need to be realistic here so we can set up the proper amount of savings for the next 20 years, it is better to project a conservative estimate than being discourage when the time comes.

it was just a dream and will never be realized. yes we have to think realistically. you have to think that prices will not go very high, so in other words you must to gather more bitcoin, than a little and do not hope that the high prices in the future. because if the price does not go higher you will be regret.

Lets say I want to buy bitcoins today and store them for 20 years to use a my retirement fund.  Live comfortably, but don't need to buy a yacht or anything.  How many do you think I would need to buy?
I think that that is going to depend on what the price is going to be in the future so at the moment it is not save to say what is going to be enough for the future.
You will have allot of time to earn Bitcoin in 20 years so you should get enough of them.
No one knows what can happen after 20years and saving or holding on to bitcoins for such a long time will secure your future.  I suggest that you continue to earn bitcoins as much as possible as the day pass by and after 20years, I am pretty sure that you have saved enough for your retirement.

10 Bitcoin for sure? I think that isn't enough after all for retiring for 20 years. But if the price of bitcoin is going to be $10,000 by that time.
But we can't tell what will going to be price of bitcoin by that time.
But just to be sure it is better if you are going to have hundreds of bitcoin by that time.

The bitcoin price will be at least $0.5 million in 20 years. I think the price will double every two years in the next 20 years.

It is all going to depend on what the price of the Bitcoin is going to be in the future. So I do not know how many Bitcoins you need to retire.
It also depends on you and how much money you are willing to make so we cannot give you a concrete answer.

I don't think price of bitcoin will hit $0.5million in 20 years,we can expect around $10k price within next 20 years.About retirement it depends on what amount you think is good to retire in 20 years and you can calculate amount of bitcoins needed valuating price of each bitcoin to $10,000.

Exactly $0.5 million is something difficult to achieve but bitcoin surely have an potential to achieve the price of $10k in future, and even if it achieves price of $5k then I would be happy if I am holding 50 bitcoins.

It is difficult but it is not impossible. Let's say 3/4 of current population adopt to bitcoin. 5billion = 21btc volume. 1 btc will equal to probably a million value. So it is possible yet we need a big adoptation.

It depends on many thing, first is that when you want to sell your bitcoins and how is your life style?
Exactly, your lifestyle will determine your satisfaction. If you just want a simple lifestyle and that would be good because you value more your family than money, 10 BTC would be enough for you.
to live a simple life you don't want much coins, if you want a decent and luxury lifestyle then you need more than 20 coins.
For sure 20 coins is enough for living in many countries but the problem is that if they want to sell them in 20years after retiring or they want to sell them now!
I think if you want to live comfortably in the future you must have more dai 20 BTC? I doubt that 20 coin enough for your living expenses and to enjoy a comfortable life. come on 20 BTC is only worth $ 12,000? it is a year of my salary?
so I think you could collect more than that

Well I think that you can have as many as you want as long as you can save them for your future. This future will require more expenses than earnings wherein you cannot work anymore but only to enjoy life. It means all of your expenses will continue and tragic moment of being stress that will require more finances wherein the more you spent which will require you save very less due to arise hospital bills and medicines including maintenance that will cover and continues everything.

The bitcoin price will be at least $0.5 million in 20 years. I think the price will double every two years in the next 20 years.

Yeah, but youre assuming with that span of how many years we get the 3/4 population you mention get on board?

Its already been 6 years and my neighbor still doesnt know about bitcoin.
Even here they didnt know about bitcoin but some people here are adopting bitcoin and i think these following year we will see some store and shops are accepting bitcoin as payment.. for now we are lucky that we are first to know bitcoin than the other people.. and i think if they release it if tsome store are accepting bitcoin as payment just like brazil 150 stores are accepting bitcoin as payment including starbucks i think bitcoin will be more popular..

Firstly OP are you sure btc will be there for next 20 years?
Secondly your government will not ban the btc for next 20 years?
Thirdly if it exits and your country allows it will it have more value then your purchase price?
