The first crypto to release to the public with SegWit will be the big winner. It may not be Bitcoin, or even Litecoin. If a group were to take the Bitcoin (or Litecoin) source, make a new coin, with SegWit built-in from the group up, call it Bitcoin2, or Litecoin2, start a brand new block chain with it, that entity will likely create many millionaires. And since they are starting a new coin, they could drop any code that deals with backward compatibility issues.

Pretty sure that all recent namecoin releases are fully-segwit enabled. It is just a matter of time before the miners switch over I suppose.

Unfortunately, no.  They have the basic code, but we need to do a hardfork first to make BIP9 (which is used to activate segwit) compatible with merge mining, so that the code is disabled for now.  Before we can proceed here, we need BIP65 (nVersion=4) to activate - currently running at 91% of the network hashrate, so close. So far coins have risen on pumps by speculators / pumpers.

A coin can be pumped only when it can be cornered, when a pumper can buy up a substantial amount of the coin then not have to worry about sellers selling into their pump. There are literally hundreds of examples of utterly worthless coins that somebody has bought 70% of and which can be pumped and dumped in cycles for a reliable profit.

Namecoin is one of the original innovative coins, in fact after bitcoin it is probably the biggest innovation. Bitcoin showed the public a new economy that is safer from predatory types of gangs and Namecoin does the same but adds an internet to the economy.

So far all of the coins that have been pumped, all of them, are lower quality coins, but their markets are controllable, cornerable. Look at the chart for bitcoin and you will see a fairly honest technical picture, with a few exceptions where high level Chinese have released news to push the price down temporarily. If you look at the chart for a coin like Namecoin you will see a longterm erosion as short term speculators leave for lower quality more profitable coins. This decline would only be expected to end when crypto is at the cusp of a broader adoption and educated speculators expect a shift back into quality.

It looks like that phase is probably beginning.

I'm a little concerned about the new Core wallet. Will they be releasing one soon that isn't a pre-release test build? Perhaps there is information somewhere about this, but I can't seem to find it.  Tongue

The beta wallet is now the latest version https://www.namecoin.org/download/ and it's perfectly fine to use for users. In fact miners should use it or the previous 0.13rc1 to activate BIP65, only then they will release a new beta to enable BIP9, after that there will be a final release with the bitcoin softfork support that allows segwit enabled...

is there really no light wallet?
and how big is the blockchain?
i dont want to buy coins without a lite wallet.

Blockchain folder is 4gb. **You can activate prune if you use the latest beta**. In fact if you update from an old wallet you will get twice the blockchain, and you'll have to manually delete the old blockchain from the root folder at appdata/roaming/namecoin/*.blk. the new blockchain format is inside two subfolders.

*Edited: Beta wallet is now on main download page.

A few factors that may help to keep the project financially alive until it reaches its proper fulfillment:

a) Slightly greater publicity here, there and in the social networks/communities is needed. Less important rival projects survive because of that.

b) Better adaptation of the official website to the unexperienced users, particularly, of the wallet, etc.

Is it safe to store namecoins in the hard wallets, such as KeepKey, Trezor?

Agree on that. Definitely need some marketing, website revamp, make it more user friendly. And a lot of social media exposure.

A summary of how things went at ICANN58 (including my slides) should be posted in circa 2-3 days.  (It's already written, I'm just giving the other Namecoin devs a few days to request any changes that might be needed.)  Sorry for the delay -- as with most free software projects, writing stuff in English tends to take a backseat to writing stuff in (insert programming language here).

While I'd love to see better public relations effort for Namecoin, our previous experiments with having technically non-proficient people do marketing on our behalf ended up doing more harm than good.  So I don't foresee that happening again.  Technically proficient people tend to perceive development as more productive (or just more fun) than marketing, so the technically proficient Namecoin community members haven't done a lot of marketing work.  I'd love to hear suggestions on how we could do a better job on this.

Seems it'll be another few days, as one of the developers requested changes to the news post I wrote, so the review process has to be restarted.  Apologies for the delay on this -- I realize people are interested in hearing how things went.

To quote from the net: "If upgrades never happen, progress in Bitcoin will stagnate, and developers will migrate to other ecosystems." The same applies to the Namecoin.

Given that Namecoin activated a softfork in the last month, I don't think we're particularly at risk of never upgrading.  More developers/volunteers wouldn't hurt though.  (I suppose more funding wouldn't hurt either, though that's harder.)
