1021  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Crypto industry donates over $78 million to elect pro-innovation candidates on: December 18, 2023, 04:35:27 PM
An impressive list of donors - all bigger than the biggest Bitcoin fighter and always on the front line when needed - for their personal profit, of course.

I mean, nothing surprises me, it's no secret how things work in the largest democracy in the world, donations and lobbying are quite common tactics in achieving a goal. If you fill the pockets of all these people they will support anything, now the only question is whether there is enough money to buy enough affection.
1022  Other / Off-topic / Re: Good manners and good favour. on: December 18, 2023, 04:05:52 PM
~snip~
Do good manners bring good favour to you since you joined this Bitcointalk.org? Or what do you have to add in this topic to encourage newbies in the aspect of good manners?

We could discuss here what someone considers "good manners", but I'm afraid that it would be a very long discussion with a lot of different opinions, which would not necessarily be wrong considering the cultural differences between the members of this forum. What I want to say is that most people on this forum only copy their virtues and flaws from real life, and if someone steals, lies and uses vulgar language in his society and family, then he will most likely do the same on the forum.

What is much more important is that each user familiarizes himself with the rules of the forum, and then he will understand what is good and what is bad behavior. Although I know that some people experience this forum in a completely different way than others, I think that some people exaggerate a bit and just put too much pressure on themselves.

Be yourself, read good posts, learn and pass on knowledge to others, and everything else is less important and comes naturally.
1023  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins and other cryptos will never become mainstream before... on: December 18, 2023, 03:21:32 PM
Bitcoins and other cryptos will never become mainstream before... people can buy water bottles with them.
~snip~

Do you live in the belief that this is not possible at this moment? Of course, this is not possible in every store that exists in the world, but it is possible in many countries where Bitcoin is a completely legitimate means of payment. If you go to El Salvador, you will probably be able to buy a bottle of water or whatever you want and pay with BTC (LN) - and if you go to the island of Boracay, you will certainly be able to buy water and pay with BTC.

Here, for example, I can now go to a local site and buy water or any other drink and pay with Bitcoin or some altcoin - or I can buy anything else that is there.

I don't know what kind of mainstream ideas you fantasize about, but Bitcoin will probably never be the choice of the majority but of the minority that wants an alternative. In addition, the idea of Bitcoin as a currency is disappearing more and more, especially when we take into account the on-chain fees that most people do not want to pay.
1024  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Jpg monkeys are making the fees impossible? Just use a meme coin! on: December 18, 2023, 11:52:18 AM
Now, being spammed by the those monkeys, the obvious solution is....to use a meme coin! Yeah, you heard me right, a shitcoin meme coin! And guess what? Most are doing it!

Dogecoin is a much more meaningful and effective coin than all these ordinary idiocies that have been happening in the past months. I would never call it a shitcoin because unlike thousands of others that existed 10 years ago, Doge is still around and always has huge support.

I always thought that my time on the faucets would pay off one day, and I well remember the time when 1000 Doges were worth a whopping $0.14, and you could easily collect that much every day. Luckily, I still have them, although I don't need them at the moment.

I just hope Santa isn't buying presents with Bitcoin, fees will bankrupt him!
/ second rant over

I heard that Santa has good relations with some miners and that he pays very favorable fees, so that children should not be afraid that there will be no presents this year🎅
1025  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Ordinal blockchain irking me, causing almost $40 median fee now... on: December 17, 2023, 04:03:37 PM
I don't want to spend $40 to consolidate here.  I guess I'll just have to wait.  And wait & wait & wait???

Some would easily tell you that you should consider other options when it comes to payment, whether it's using altcoins or even paying through a bank. Given that we have more and more ordinal nonsense on the blockchain, it seems that we are heading towards a situation where on-chain transactions will become so expensive that most people will not want to pay for them. But don't worry, guys who invest through BlackRock & Fidelity won't have those problems.

As of this moment, the "Low Priority" transaction is at 475 sat/vB which is around $27.
TBH, this is the highest transaction that I've seen ever since. The largest that I saw was way back in 2017 when it was around $23.

It was much more than that, even more than $50 in 2017 and more than $60 in April 2021. Of course there were other reasons then, but who cares about reasons when they see such fees - Bitcoin is dead, again Shocked

1026  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I finally sold my computer and bought bitcoin. I don't regret . on: December 17, 2023, 03:33:46 PM
I sold my computer and bought about 0.006 bitcoin.
For the rest of money, I saved them in my bank account.
I hope this decision is right.

I'm 19 years old, living in Korea, and I'm thinking of selling a computer to raise money to invest in bitcoin. I think I can sell it for about $600. I get about $100 a month as an allowance from my father. $100 is only for personal use, not for living expenses. I've been using these $100s to buy bitcoin for a few months now. It's ridiculously small money, but I believe it could be quite a lot of money if I keep saving it steadily. Is selling a computer the right decision?

Please read the forum rules and do not open new topics if you can continue the discussion in the previous topic. If everyone opened only one topic every month with what they bought or sold, what would this forum look like?
1027  Other / Meta / Re: I think it's possible to keep going without banning mixers on: December 17, 2023, 03:21:59 PM
This has been a hot topic recently but I think it's not necessary to ban mixers because their existence is not actually the problem today. Mixers are legal, they aren't illegal, so, it's no problem for this forum to allow mixers to create ANN thread and have discussion or even promote themselves via forum ads or signature campaign. Google allows you to search bitcoin mixers, right? There are even articles on Yahoo where bitcoin mixers are listed too.

Many times on the forum some provision or law that exists in the US was mentioned that exempts the advertiser from responsibility for what they actually advertise, and legally I think that the members of the forum are protected by that, but I am not sure if the same applies to the forum. But if it's true for Google and other big companies, then it should be true for the forum, right?

Regardless of how someone interprets it from a legal perspective, it seems that it is still a slippery slope that the admin wants to avoid, of course, first of all, keeping in mind that it is not the forum itself, but also him personally as a responsible person. I believe that it is not easy for anyone to think of Ross Ulbricht, who will most likely rot in prison for the rest of his life, and to think that something similar could happen to you.

Yes, believe it or not, the problem starts when you ignore what is publishes about certain mixers. There were mixers earlier, like, [banned mixer] (since 2018) and [banned mixer] (since 2016). I did a research and these mixers have never been mentioned by any media, these mixers haven't been seized and this forum didn't get any problem from these mixers. Are they honeypot? I don't know but at the moment it looks like it's perfectly safe to discuss about them and to it's not harmful from them to promote themselves here. They haven't officially caught any attention from governments.

Imagine a situation where the mixers remain on the forum under the same conditions as before, and then an article appears in one of the influential media where the article mentions every mixer by name as possible services that are currently being used by some hacker/terrorist group. Game over, right?

The reason why this attitude is better for this forum is that what would theymos do if tomorrow there comes a casino with ANN thread, runs signature campaign and helps people to launder money? Imagine you read articles that Lazarus laundered money through CasinoX, then another article comes up with title: Russian hackers launder money through CasinoX. If theymos won't ban this CasinoX immediately and wait for its seize, then this forum will be included in another PDF uploaded by justice.gov. Will theymos block discussion about crypto casinos? Will he ban casino signature campaigns? Doesn't make sense, right?

We have to accept that sooner or later the time will come when signature campaigns will no longer be part of this forum. Whether it will be about the fact that gambling sites will be banned after the mixers, or maybe the forum as a place for advertising will lose its meaning due to the decreasing interest of some of the new generations that are coming.

Some older members of the forum surely remember the time when signature campaigns did not even have a manager and everything was done by bots - and in those ten years we have obviously gone from one extreme to the other. Those who adhere to the rule "always expect the unexpected" have known for a long time that such times will come. We have nothing left but to adapt and move on.
1028  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Closing Central Bank is Non-negotiable says pro-bitcoin Argentina Pres Milei on: December 17, 2023, 12:16:41 PM
The problems with Zelenski is not what he is doing now (what else were he going to do? Give up after the invasion and not send the army forward from the safety of his bunker?!! lol)
The problem is all his naïve actions, statements, incitements and "pokes" that led to the conflict with the neighbor! Everything that could have been avoided if an actual politician were in office and for example instead of bringing Russia's enemy #1 to 400 km from Moscow could took both US and Russia by the balls and milk them both for the benefit of his country and ensure its security.

If you think that the problem is that someone wants to live according to their own rules in their country and not be obedient to someone who thinks that Ukraine should not be part of the EU and NATO, then you do not understand what freedom and the right to free decision are at all. In your opinion, President Zelensky should have agreed to everything Putler asked and become a Russian colony so that the Holodomor would happen to them again?

I know that in Europe there is a dictated status quo but if you spend time studying history of what led to the conflict from sources other than the censored mainstream media you can see that when it comes to lack of experience and naïve and in some cases very suspicious behavior that is harmful to the country, both Milei and Zelenski are pretty similar.

Do you want to say that all the people of the world except Russia, Iran and maybe North Korea live in a censored world where there is no truth? Unfortunately, I went through what Ukrainians are going through today, and it was even worse because the world imposed sanctions on the import of weapons - but according to you, the Serbian butchers with the war criminal Slobodan Milosevic were positive people who just didn't want NATO at their door, so they did the same what are the Russians doing today?

I don't understand how you can put those two men in the same sentence at all, what does a man who is called a El Loco have in common with a man who fights for the literal survival of their country and the people who live there?
1029  Other / Meta / Re: Ruissian mod? on: December 17, 2023, 11:52:42 AM
Hey there fellas.
Haven't been here for a while and just noticed that so-called Russian has become a moderator of this section.

You probably mean the P&S board, but you should know that for a very long time that board did not have a moderator, and as far as it seems to me, no one was really interested in moderating that board. If someone is doing their job objectively and in accordance with the rules of the forum, I don't see why anyone should look for a problem in that.

Things are so bad here that Russians aren't only not banned but are allowed to moderate serious topics by the standards of this forum?

This forum guarantees certain freedoms, and even if you ban people from a certain country from participating in this forum, they can easily bypass it by using VPN/Tor, which the Russians do because this forum is banned in their country. In addition, whether someone liked it or not, they are the most numerous members on the forum with the most posts.
1030  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Closing Central Bank is Non-negotiable says pro-bitcoin Argentina Pres Milei on: December 16, 2023, 03:58:41 PM
Populists always say what the people want to hear, and does anyone really think that the central bank of Argentina is the main culprit for a decade of crazy policies that destroyed that same country that used to be in the top 10 countries in the world? Foreign interests always have two courses of action when it comes to the "subjugation" of countries, and the first is certainly the economic destruction of the country, and if that doesn't work, the second option is war.

Did you see where Milei went on his first visit and who are his role models? In addition, look at where he appointed the former governor of the central bank and his associates, and then he talks about some kind of savings in the state administration.

~snip~
This is what happens when non-politicians become politicians! He is basically Zelenski 2.0 who is set out to ruin the country.

I understand that you don't want to (or can't think differently), but we in Europe consider President Zelensky to be an extremely brave man who is doing everything to defend his country, and thus the rest of Central and Western Europe, from the creation of a new Russian world. Comparing someone with the nickname "El Loco" to a man who stood up to one of the greatest military powers is completely meaningless.
1031  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: IRS Criminal Investigation Unit Is Taking on More Crypto Tax Cases on: December 16, 2023, 03:31:35 PM
@larry_vw_1955, it would be El Salvador, but I think they still overcharged the price for what they offer. I think that the comments on that "offer" are quite negative, because most say that they would spend $1 million in a much better way, which is a completely logical choice. In addition, the guys from the Tether team and the Bukele team made an agreement a long time ago -> El Salvador Bitcoin: Tether buys itself a country; and why Chivo sucks

Regarding taxes, I would disagree that the average American wants to play cat and mouse with the IRS, because I believe that most are guided by that old saying "the two things everyone has to do in life are pay taxes and die".
1032  Other / Off-topic / Re: Simple advice, don't get carried away by people success stories. on: December 16, 2023, 11:32:39 AM
In the third world country today and I would like to believe not only there, they seem to be so much wave all about the cryptocurrency market or industry whatever suit the explanation, but the thing is that many people actually get intrigued by the success stories of some maybe influencers or people that aren't actually expert on the field but maybe experience one or two lucky session especially when we look at it from the trading aspect.
~snip~

Nothing happens by chance, and third world countries are definitely a target for all those scammers who are looking for easy targets who can be sold a nicely packaged story about how investing in some "crypto projects" will make them rich overnight. These people have no problem stealing the last penny from someone, and they also consider that people who are already poor have no possibility to take any legal action once they realize that they have been cheated.

Therefore, it is very important to warn young people in time not to fall under the influence of such stories, and that social networks are not at all harmless, but are full of scammers who are looking for their victims in every possible way.
1033  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: December 15, 2023, 03:58:11 PM
Extremely important: having an additional passphrase (BIP 38)!

If your paper wallet isn't passphrase-protected, the entire contents of the wallet are up for grabs by anyone who finds it. It's like compressing all your coins into a piece of paper, open for anyone to steal. Very dangerous (spouses, siblings, Bitcoin ATM shop staff, OTC contacts, don't always have the best intentions...).

This is definitely advice that everyone should follow, but for the average investor in Bitcoin or altcoins, such things are simply too much because they go in the direction of trusting CEXs like they trust banks. Even those who additionally secure their backup with a passphrase sometimes store seed+passphrase together, which of course makes no sense, unless they think that someone will succeed in hacking their seed because it is very easy to guess 12 or maybe 24 words out of 2048 available and then a passphrase will serve as additional protection.

I can only say that the world is full of people who look very nice and harmless, but unfortunately they often have very bad intentions when they sense an opportunity to get easy money.
1034  Economy / Economics / Re: Why do people rush in to buy things when rates are about to be lowered? on: December 15, 2023, 03:32:00 PM
~snip~
So basically, why is people buying, if with 100% of certainty, this has been working since the 2000? Shouldn't you be considering a scenario where prices will be lower?

In the title you say "things", and I assume you mean goods and services and not Bitcoin? I think that when it comes to some basic needs and a little more than that, we cannot expect people to refrain from spending money and buying something even if they know that in x months the same thing or service will be xx% cheaper.

No one can wait to buy gifts for the Christmas and New Year holidays, or to repair a leaking roof - but they could definitely think about it when it comes to buying a new car or some expensive device.

In that case, how would BTC perform? Will it successfully decouple from the markets, or is it going to mimick SP500 and just crash harder? Will the ETF hype + halving be enough to counteract these dynamics?

I believe that the next year is specific because of the halving and the possible approval of the spot ETF, so I personally expect that the price of Bitcoin will achieve a new ATH considering that this year (so far) we have had a growth of over 100%. Taking that into account, I believe that $80k to $100k by the end of next year is a realistic price to expect, even if the spot ETF is not approved.
1035  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Quickest way to earn merit? on: December 15, 2023, 03:00:04 PM
I'm new here. What's all about this merit count? How is it earned? I'm assuming it's linked to the quality/usefulness of your posts/replies? Their originality maybe? What are usually the subjects you'd get the more merit for posting about?

Somehow it seems to me that your statement is not correct, because it seems that you are an alt of someone who knows the forum very well and is technically very well versed when it comes to Bitcoin.

I feel like he was trying to sarcasm, he create a good topic in technical discussion and earn many merits in one thread, so I'd say he's not really a newbie. But there's no rule of having alt accounts, I'm not saying @OP was wrong or make a mistake.

I'm glad that someone else noticed (or at least publicly admitted that they had doubts). Alts are not against the forum rules, but some of the other things done with them definitely are. In any case, it will be interesting to see in which direction this "newbie" will go.
1036  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin community are in support of BRC20 on: December 15, 2023, 11:37:18 AM
@Oshosondy, I agree with you in one part, because although some object to what is happening and say that something should be done, I think that the majority who are only interested in profit have nothing against all this. Some of them will easily say that you should use some altcoins and thus avoid big fees, because Bitcoin is not what it was in the beginning anyway.

Some others say that any prohibition of these transactions would be a form of some kind of censorship, which would later open the possibility of censoring individual transactions, as if some mining pools do not already do this or have not already tried to go in that direction.

Read this topic and maybe some things will be clearer to you.
1037  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Beware of Clipboard Virus! on: December 15, 2023, 11:18:20 AM
@DYING_S0UL, I remembered one "trick" that might help you speed up your computer, because even though you have 8 GB of RAM and you say that it still works slowly, you can try to stop a W10 feature called (SysMain (Superfetch)) which actually preloads those apps that you use it most often, so it can take up a lot of RAM.

All you need is to follow the instructions on the link and first stop that process, and then disable it from starting automatically with the OS. In case you need this feature again, you can simply turn it on.

Quote
Superfetch was introduced with Windows Vista and it's now known as SysMain on the latest versions of Windows 10 and 11. This Windows service runs in the background and analyzes your PC usage.
Based on your usage, the service determines what apps you're most likely to use. Then, it preloads those apps in your PC's RAM so you can open those apps quickly. In other words, this service speeds up the launching of the most used apps on your PC.

1038  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why do we spam on: December 14, 2023, 04:29:07 PM
Mods rarely if ever delete one-liners, posts that add nothing to the conversation or posts with grammar so poor that they are incomprehensible. So many users have given up on reporting anything that is not advertisement spam with links or completely off-topic.

I think that the status of our reports depends on at least two factors, the first of which is our assessment of whether something is spam, and the way we report it. The post can be reported as spam, signature spam, low value post, repetitive content - and it is always necessary to provide as much information (links) as possible in the report. Another thing we have to keep in mind is the fact that not all mods have the same opinion about the same thing, which means that some will delete a reported post, while others may mark it as a "bad report".

And you are right, the motivation behind spam doesn't matter, because we can't change it. Strict moderation is the only solution - those who would get banned once or twice would be more careful or would just leave the forum.

I agree, from personal experience I can say that week after week I report posts by the same members who spam one and the same thing, and they are still active, which is definitely something that should not be allowed. Such things can definitely be very discouraging for all those who want to do something good for the forum, so it can seem to them that they are really just wasting their time.
1039  Other / Meta / Re: Second chances on: December 14, 2023, 02:57:51 PM
~snip~
I am surprised the thread has not been flooded with applications.

I am not the least bit surprised, because those who have been banned for a long time have already come to terms with it and will certainly not even know about this opportunity. In addition, there are certain conditions under which these accounts could be returned to their owners, and the signature ban makes them quite worthless for most of them.
1040  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Data Harvesting Inside Ledger Live App - Is this really part of Non-custodial? on: December 14, 2023, 12:01:16 PM
The best option for those who have a Ledger wallet and are worried about data harvesting, is just to use another software.
~snip~

There is no doubt about that, but still from time to time you can't avoid using LL, at least when it comes to things like updating or adding a coin app, or maybe when it comes to a firmware upgrade. I turned off that questionable option a long time ago because I have a habit of checking such things, but this is a good warning for all those who haven't done it yet or are about to install LL.

Uhm...  what about the key extraction code that's not built into the firmware?

Maybe that code has always existed, only recently they decided to tell us about it because they want to charge us for a service that has a direct connection with that code.

I seriously do not understand why anyone is trusting Ledger at this point.  What ever happened to the days of Bitcoiners saying "Don't trust.  Verify."  Now, it seems to be "Don't trust, unless the company's CEO wears at least nine rings while defending key extraction firmware.  Nine rings or more makes it okay."

Some actually have no idea what it's all about, some others simply can't afford another HW, others think that the recovery option is actually something that gives them greater security. Besides, how many people actually understand Bitcoin as more than a get-rich-quick scheme? If so many believe in CEX as a crypto bank, it's no wonder that they still trust the company that allowed it to be hacked (data leak) and then came up with the idea of enabling seed extraction and sharing the same with third parties.

There are only three safe uses for a Ledger:

Door stop.
Target practice.
Decoy wallet.

I agree, and maybe someone could think of another way to use it - I know that some have managed to install a simple game on Ledger in the past🐍
