I think the system works as it is now.

GPU is the most common mining HW.

I don't want to see any FPGA junk in this section.

Keep the GPU in main and FPGA in subsection for now ...

There are times i could slap you in your face all day long...

Whatever. For you FPGA makes sense.

For me ( and other people with low electricity ) this FPGA business is a total waste of time.

Only thing new it brings is low power costs NOT radical speed improvement like jump from CPU to GPU.

In summary, not everybody thinks it is the "next big thing" and not everybody needs to hear about it 24/7.

If I could get dedicated FPGA rigs that used the same amount of power as GPUs, I would choose them even if they have ~no resale value. My time is valuable, and I can't waste time tinkering with unstable GPU rigs, and FPGA completely remove the reliability from the equation. Plug them in, turn them on, hash like a mother.

Rave all you want about FPGA reliability but AFAIK we have not seen what mining 24/7 for a year does to a FPGA ...

We have seen that GPUs can last a while ( fan failures suck ) but the 6 month warranty on the BFL is not inspiring anyone right now.

Maybe consider ZTEX with 2 year EU warranty but US folks have no other options etc.

Move to meta ? I agree Grin

OK. Where can I buy lots of these for cheap in the UK Grin

What is the price for the old product and the new one with the SATA cables ?

I'm quite shocked at the immense server costs they have. I don't know what they are doing with those servers. Does it make sense to anyone?

Indeed. Seems they greatly invest in servers and other critical infrastructure like that.

This explains why they are always lagging when a market movement happens Roll Eyes

I have found the grain of rice method doesn't work well on GPUs.

With a CPU you have a single heatsink which mounts to the flat heat spreader and applies a lot of pressure.

With a GPU the heatsink covers multiple components and is tightened down with multiple screws.  Very hard to get the same amount of direct pressure on the GPU die.

The other advantage of CPU is the heat spreader is larger than the chip surface so if thermal compound doesn't get all the way to the corners it doesn't really matter because there is no heat source there.  With GPU what you see is the actual chip package and even the corners are putting out significant amount of heat.

For CPU the single grain of rice method works fine.  For GPU I use the thin line and spread with a credit card.  It doesn't need to be perfect the heatsink will apply some pressure and spread it out.

Still regardless of the method you want as little as possible.  I try to get it thin enough that it looks almost translucent.

Nope... Grain of rice method does not work for any bare dies. It leaves the edges bare like you said.

I use an X method which works fantastic. Two thin lines in an X shape from each corner of the die. Spread method works good too. Really, any method will work as long as the die is covered.

I used big grain of rice and my temperatures were fantastic ...

As said before YMMV depending on how much you apply and how much you press etc.

1286  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Any ideas for a portable mining rig on: March 25, 2012, 03:27:55 PM
Hi,
I'm new here but I wish to make a start into the mining business to get things going.

First thing I have to think about is what sort of rig I wanna make:
I have a plan that goes something like this:
1.The computer can be one of those portable desktops (SFF type cases) or a cheap netbook with an fpga.
2.I plan to make it a small desktop (Shuttle Pc like size,SFF type cases)
3.I want to know how to cram as much power into that small factor.I need the portability, discrete and compact attributes. I don't want a large rig taking up too much space on my desk at home or at work. (when the office closes at the end of hte day,I wanna b abl to take it home with me so the boss can't bust me for mining)
4.I'd like everything else to be cheap (like mobo, cpu, ram,SSD as HDDs take up more space)
5.I'd like the OS to be either win 7 or another OS that performs better with mining GPUs or FPGAs
6.I want an easy solution to setup as I'm not too gd with computers if FPGAs are recommended 4 me in this case.

SO guys what cases and hardware can fit the bill? I'll need links for EU (prices should b in euros) type sites as I live in EU (not US so don't give me USD prices as that's no gd 4 me)
I'm open to the possibility that FPGAs can complement the single dual GPU that can typically fit into a SFF case, plus the remaining space can b used by something else (not sure what though)

I have access to free elec (so a hi-performance monster GPU can be added without worry of hte utility bill for strting off)

Thanks.I'm new to the mining rig side of things.

So it looks like you are planning to build a portable desktop to bring to work so you can steal electricity from your employer Huh

Good luck with that and hope you get the door.

Stealing electricity = shame on you !

make sure you confirm your email

Done ( I think ).

It shows you as my referrer so all should be fine.

1288  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: GTX 680 Perf Estimations on: March 25, 2012, 02:53:32 PM
Strange that at this point in time we still don't have ANY real results ...

Maybe someone found some magic inside and getting 1 ghash/s using this card Cheesy

Unlikely but the lack of results really is strange since this card owns 7970 for gaming in all points.

Well, at least I hope this will bring 7990 prices down !

I don't know about you guys but I have been using isopropyl alcohol and rubbing alcohol and even acetone very successfully and got very low temperatures.

If you know how to do it, then anything is good. The difference between thermal compounds is a few degrees at best. The difference between a failed application and a professional application can be huge.
1292  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Modding a reference bracket to be a high-flow bracket? on: March 24, 2012, 11:55:15 AM
I just discovered that for high density applications, you can remove the plastic shroud and the blower fan and still have the heatsink attached, making multiple cards fit side-by-side much better, and allowing you to control airflow far more easily. The heatsink under the plastic is basically the same as the FirePro Passive cards meant for servers, and the only remaining issue is the DVI ports getting in the way. Might have to create a small bit of plastic to channel the airflow better around the DVI ports.

Very good discovery.

Can you take the shroud off without taking off the GPU and needing to reapply thermal paste etc. ?

1293  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Modding a reference bracket to be a high-flow bracket? on: March 23, 2012, 11:51:37 PM
I don't know about you guys but I have taken all the brackets off.

More weight for my rack which is not good.

Then you have the nice hair dryer effect too, which is nice.

Resale value will suck probably Sad
1294  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: GTX 680 Perf Estimations on: March 23, 2012, 11:48:52 PM
Nvidia GTX 680 has 1536 ALUs running at 1006-1058 MHz. There are a few unknowns because AFAIK there is still no public information whether the Kepler architecture has a native instruction doing (a & b) | (~a & c) (aka BFI_INT on AMD GPUs, useful to implement maj() and ch() in SHA-256), and a native integer rotate instruction. Nonetheless, it is easy to calculate the upper bound of mining performance because it is an embarrassingly parallel workload, and we know how many instructions are required in these different scenarios:

  • 300-315 Mh/s assuming the Kepler microarchitecture still lacks BFI_INT and int rotate
  • 375-395 Mh/s if Nvidia added only int rotate
  • 450-475 Mh/s if Nvidia implemented both BFI_INT and int rotate natively

This would still be worse than AMD's comparable HD 7970 card at stock clocks (554 Mh/s); but definitely a step in the right direction for Nvidia who finally recognized that having (much) more ALUs at a (slightly) lower clock is better than fewer ALUs at a higher clock.

If this gets 470 mhash/s I still think the 7970 wins by a lot Sad

Really wanted some competition to force AMD to get better drivers for Linux.
1295  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [116% TESTING] I want your hashing power! "Project #2" on: March 23, 2012, 11:17:08 PM
project #2 is working fine with gpumax as a private pool right now...

So he is not penalising for this "hopping" behaviour then ?

I swear that project #2 used to be banned on GPU MAX last time ...

1296  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: [116% TESTING] I want your hashing power! "Project #2" on: March 23, 2012, 11:14:37 PM
I thought GPUMAX banned Goat's pool because it was some sort of endless loop or lagging ?

How are you guys putting Goat as the private pool then ?

Maybe Goat is actually running through GPUMAX and getting a 4% cut for himself ( no evidence, just speculation ) ?

Thanks !
1297  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Wonder who this solominer is? 88.6.216.9 on: March 23, 2012, 12:24:29 AM
I am pretty sure it is either an ASIC miner or ArtForz. No evidence but I think that is what is happening.

This is no botnet. Maybe an institution or government ?

Anyway, watching because I don't like how this crap looks. No TX in blocks = something fishy is going on here.

What if this dude gets above 51% ? The supposedly 40 million value of BTC will become worthless all of a sudden as people realise this system is flawed ?

Funny that with about 10 million you can compromise a system that is supposedly worth 40 million now Cheesy

10 million for the NSA and their limitless budgets is like 1000 USD for all of us comparatively ( e.g. spare change ). Sooner we realise this and move on from the dumb explanation "won't happen" and we actually fix the fault using technology the better for BTC and all our coins, I think.

I don't even want to think about it TBH ...
1298  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs Threads on: March 23, 2012, 12:10:13 AM
I agree.

It seems that this is done now.

Thank you very much admins.

Hate wasting my time with all that FPGA irrelevancy. Cheesy
1299  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: GK104: nVidia's Kepler to be the First Mining Card? on: March 22, 2012, 11:57:52 PM
Newegg listed "Shader clock: 2012MHz".

Interesting... 1536 ALUs at 2012MHz would give it more processing power than a HD 6990. Either the GTX 680 is going to be the fastest GPU for mining, or it is a blatant mistake from Newegg or the microarchitecture has undisclosed limitations that would prevent exploiting all this apparent power.

Per the NDA lifted today, this was a blatant error. The ALUs will run at 1006-1058 MHz, which should allow this card to mine at an upper bound of 450-470 Mh/s (80-85% the speed of a HD 7970.) This is assuming of course thar Nvidia added a BFI_INT-like instruction to the architecture, which is not certain. If not, performance would be much lower...

WOW. This would be heaven if true.

Can you say 14 GPU Nvidia mining rig with a relatively cheap motherboard ?

The only thing that may kill it is the crap MH/$ value but prices will drop anyway ...
1300  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoinica Inc on: March 22, 2012, 01:33:55 AM
over 1 month now & no news on this, Linode hax prob didn't help I guess, any eta Zhou?

a couple of days ago I finally got out of the nightmare scenario of being trapped in a large high $5s base price long position on Bitcoinica which would have been fine as my ZT price was in the $2s originally & I was happy to wait long term & could have kept it at 1:1 leverage np, until that was he unilaterally decided to start taxing long positions with swap charges, to me this is just Bitcoin wild west no rules rule - I'm waiting to see if his stated registration goes through because once it does I intend to claim back that swap money just removed from my account by changing without notice the conditions under which it was deposited & making my position long term untenable so that I had to close it for a big loss as I believe this sort of action is totally illegitimate in any jurisdiction

anyone else who's suffered because of this pse to let me know & we can coordinate to recuperate this blatant rip off with damages also for overall position loss if it hadn't happened once we were locked in

it's so nice atm to finally be out of that & tomorrow off for a long weekend without having to follow every price movement & the feeling of having trusted way too much money to someone who just makes the rules up to suit themselves as they go along, honestly I was amazed to get anything back out at all in that scenario - never again!

LOL.

Guess you are the sockpuppet account of the meelba guy who also wanted to sue Zhou for some odd reason.

So many people want to sue a 17 year old that it really is amazing. You knew the risk when you deposited your money and when you lose it you all decide to complain Huh

Good luck to you and see how far you can get in the courts.

BTC is not "real" money by any means today ...
