1941  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Information on ATI 7xxx Series Dec. 5th! on: December 22, 2011, 08:05:39 PM
Got a nice stock of 5870s. Happy right now. ATI = fail yet again.

IMHO they are still pretty damn smart and they want to compete with Nvidia. Nvidia blows ATI for things like weather forecasting, folding and other important scientific, real world changing stuff. The catch ? Bitcoin is integer and folding ( GPGPU computing in general ) is based on floating point and DP ( double precision ). The 58xx were EPIC for integer but crap at floating point. The CGN crap is bringing more FP to the table to compete with Nvidia. We have to face it : Bitcoin / integer / bruteforcing is still a tiny share of the market ATM.
Pffft, bullshit.

Try projects like Milkyway@Home (that's a DOUBLE PRECISION one), Collatz Conjecture or Moo! Wrapper. Nvidia sucks there.

Yes but what is the difference between those examples / Bitcoin and something like Folding@Home or WCG ?

The marketshare. F@H and WCG etc. are big while those examples and Bitcoin is relatively small in terms of penetration.
1942  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $700 (was $500) — Butterflylabs, is it for real? (Part 2) on: December 22, 2011, 01:37:33 PM
We need to know what the chip under the hood is.

Couple of reasons :

-maybe these were sourced from Libya / Egypt and there may be some ethical issues there
-this is not something insignificant but the main component of the Bitforce product
-how reliable is this going to be and how long will it last
-can it be repurposed for some other computation ?

Basically, compared to GPUs, with these you are screwed in terms of warranty and reselling. If you don't get your money off them in time or they break you are royally screwed. Will BFL Labs really afford to honor them warranties when they are still sucking off pre-order money ( around $50 000 ) ? Will the boxes last enough to reach break even ? Only time will tell.

I gotta give them this though : good idea for the swappable 80mm fan. Will opening the unit and changing that dead fan affect the warranty ? Thank you !

1944  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: An (even more) optimized version of cpuminer - LTC/FBX/TBX on: December 21, 2011, 11:19:56 PM
I was going mad here telling everyone there has to be better performance for Intel CPUs but I was seen a lunatic Roll Eyes

It has finally arrived but sadly since everyone will upgrade, there will not be any profitability increase. Thanks though !
1945  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: I want your hasing power! "Project #2" 110%-105% PPS! on: December 21, 2011, 07:33:44 PM
As soon as MM and the front end is implemented, I would be interested with about 3.5 ghash/s.

Still no news about the chip inside. I ( like many others on here, I suspect ) will not buy a product if I don't understand or know what is "under the hood". Good luck with the sales before somebody else much more serious comes on the scene and with reliable 28nm tech.
1947  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Information on ATI 7xxx Series Dec. 5th! on: December 21, 2011, 11:35:27 AM
I just heard that that the HD7970 is close to the HD6990 in the benchmarks shown on this link:
http://www.fudzilla.com/graphics/item/25259-radeon-hd-7970-close-to-hd-6990

If this is anything to go by,then it may be very good for mining as well.

Overclocking this card would get this even closer to a HD6990 though.I hope this is repeatable for mining as well.

If it is using CGN then I think it still will suck. Reality right now is that 5870 and 5970 were the best mining cards ever created. All the rest suck for integer heavy operations like Bitcoin and bruteforcing stuff.
1948  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Information on ATI 7xxx Series Dec. 5th! on: December 18, 2011, 12:23:41 PM
Personally id go with this,

7800s are going be pants. Same as 7700 Sad FPGA is the only way now)

79xx - CGN
78xx - CGN
77xx - CGN
76xx - Turks
75xx - Turks
74xx -Caicos
73xx - cedar

CGN will SUCK for mining

http://semiaccurate.com/2011/12/16/low-end-radeon-hd-7000-series-rebrands/

Has this been confirmed ? Is there no die shrink of the current cards like 6970 -> 7870 with VLIW4 or VLIW5 and based on 28nm etc. ?

So when will these ship now ? Presumably in 2012 then, right ? When is that final version of the hardware with the fixed power issues coming ?

It looks like the ufasoft miner does not need to be modified anymore.

BitForce support is in the main release.  Nice.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3486.0

So then the ufasoft guy is on it too Tongue ? Hehe. Has anyone actually received a unit yet for a forum style review etc. ?

Thanks !

What about Linux ?

What is the CPU usage like on a low end CPU with multiple GPUs with a clean install of 11.12 ?

Until we find out what is behind those heatsinks I will not be buying any of this stuff.

We need the processor number and the litography process.

I am sure that if someone wants to copy your product they can do this without getting you to tell them what is what etc.

So, I suggest you let us know what is under the hood. I never buy a product that I know little tech details about.

Thanks !

It still seems like they have something to hide.

How do you explain the discrepancy between the rigbox and the single units ?

Why do you refuse to at least give us a hint about the chips or the litography process they are built on ?

Thank you.

PS : If somebody wanted to reverse engineer your stuff they can do it easy peasy without needing you to tell them the chips behind those heatsinks. It would be much more credible and legitimate of your company if you could tell us the "magic" behind these FPGAs and what process they are based on.

Care to give us a breakdown of your product vs BFL Labs ( maybe in your own thread ) so the average Joe can see what the differences are etc. ? How scalable is your solution ( in terms of units / area of space ) etc. ?

Thanks !
1956  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $700 (was $500) — Butterflylabs, is it for real? (Part 2) on: December 13, 2011, 08:59:05 PM
Furthermore, many probably would have ordered FPGA mining boards from the competition weeks ago if this product hadn't been dangled in front of them like a carrot.

I'm not saying this was all intentional by BFL, but it's what happened whether they meant to or not.

Your motivations have been pretty clear all along.  You're having to deal with competition.  It's important to point out that you have not been wronged and I have no negative feelings towards you.  Our performance targets were posted in good faith and in the end we aren't all that far from those figures now aside from power which isn't the principle figure of importance for most people since it's still a small fraction of GPU power consumption.  Bait and switch would be accurate only if there was mal intent.  You can accuse us of being power optimistic, but that's as far as it goes.

Previously you were shouting scam.  Now it's bait and switch.  You're just mad because someone is offering a more competitive product.  That's all.

Listen, I'm sorry if your plans were disrupted, but please don't resort to slander.

Haters gonna hate on you BFL. Now all the FPGA designers are screwed by your product, they are fighting back with more BS and bad mouthing your company after they saw they are screwed and that this may be indeed, real after all. If I were you ( FPGA designers ), I would move to Russia because you seem to hate competition. Here in Russia they love monopolies ! Welcome. Free market FTW. I guess after about some time the people who buy BFL products now are screwed too as 28nm products come out in 2012 ?

Anyway,

warranty ?

what is the tech behind your product ?

tell us more about this "10 year experience" thingy ?

Thanks !

I thought the only thing that was not guaranteed was the power and they said that the 1050 Mhash/s performance figure would be kept for the final product ?
1958  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $700 (was $500) — Butterflylabs, is it for real? (Part 2) on: December 13, 2011, 01:30:17 PM
Advantages to 5970s :

-less noise
-less heat
-less power consumption ( don't really care as most miners got free electricity )
-less expensive ( 600 USD is about £384 and here in the UK the damn 5970s cost £400 at least - $300 for a 5970 was a miracle over in the states )

Disadvantages to 5970s :

-same damn hashrate
-cannot resell at all
-no gaming
-no other purpose at all ( you can hack WPA on GPUs as well as mining SolidCoins )

Conclusion :

For me at least, these units are worthless right now. I would rather get me a 5970 that has many uses and some resale value rather than these units. The 5970 is noisy and makes heat and consumes a ton of power but the price is OK and the performance is the same.

What chips are you using inside ? Altera Hardcopy ? Why are you refusing to tell us that very important information ? If it is to prevent copies than we all know how easily it is to probe the chips via JTAG if you bothered to erase the chip numbers off the top.

IMHO this is still a long way off the promised 1050 Mhash/s, 20W and $499 and those power brick issues are not funny at all.

Any plans for a 540 or 720 Mhash/s version with 3 FPGAs or 4 FPGAs etc. ?

I noticed that many people here are totally lost about what has be told and done, told but not done, done but not told and neither told nor done regarding the third party testing of ButterflyLab BitForce Single product.
With all the stuff scattered over two lengthy threads and weeks of endless debate, it is geting so confusing that even Inaba seems to be lost about what he has said and done.

This is why I have written for you the little pocket guide of "ButterflyLabs 3rd party testing for Dummies".
Thread : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=54169.0
All the quotations are taken from the "is it a scam" and "is it for real" threads (courtesy of BFL and Inaba).
The emphasis in bold and comments are from me.

I have tried to remain objective, but I am of course totally biaised Tongue, so do not base your opinion solely on my comments.
Please base your opinion on the facts, quotations, and linked messages.

This is a recommanded reading for :
- People waiting for their pre-order to be delivered
- Inaba, to help him sort out what he has said already
- Everyone else who wonders what the heck is going on with that ButterflyLabs testing nonsense.

Thank you ! Very useful resource for people. Is that demo going to come this weekend or not ( yet again ) ?

I think we should keep the off topic to a minimum on this thread and concentrate on the hard facts. Let's keep the "Inaba = BFL" conspiracy in another thread if we can.
