1762  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Canceling a transaction on: December 01, 2022, 09:44:44 PM
I haven't used the wallet before, but I've heard that when you send bitcoins the transaction can be cancelled for a short time.
Is this really the case?

It doesn't matter how long you've used your wallet. Even the time passed since sending the transaction is not just some fixed minutes, it depends on many factors (from luck to say so, since a block may be mined within seconds from you sending the transaction to even an hour sometimes, to the fee used for the transaction and the number of others' transactions not mined yet).

But more clearer, all that matters is whether a miner has managed to put that transaction of yours into a block or not.
Electrum will show that as confirmations. If (and only if) you have 0 confirmations for your transaction then yes, you may cancel it (meaning to send it to yourself instead of somebody else).
1763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: ECB blog statement: "Bitcoin’s last stand" on: December 01, 2022, 09:37:32 PM
That being said, what else was to be expected from one of the big instituations that is directly threatened by Satoshis whitepaper.

Exactly. ECB is a..  bank. And while some commercial banks have started loving the taste of the profits that come from crypto, they are still few. And the central banks (where I'd include ECB too) simply feel more and more threatened by bitcoin. They don't understand it, they cannot control it and it has the potential to make them lose their jobs on the really long term.

Even more: they are walking on a thin ice. They are pushing CBDCs, which in the average Joe's head is not that much different than Bitcoin (so CBDCs somewhat advertise bitcoin too), still, they are telling that Bitcoin is bad. I would not be surprised if even the average Joe will soon notice that something stinks badly in this kind of "reports" of ECB (and the similar central banks). Yes, it's the smell of fear...
1764  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: FIFA 2022 world cup on: December 01, 2022, 09:29:57 PM
Why did Spain avoid Croatia?

They made their progress easier and also - very important imho - made sure they will no longer risk meeting Germany again at this world cup, a team with the potential (even when they to do bad in groups) to win the world cup. Two birds with one stone, so why don't just try it if the stars did align well for that? (Sorry/no offense for Germans, it was just math here).

Thank you very much Mopar! And congrats to the rest of the winners too!

Whoop whoop! Am castigat amandoi! Felicitari noua  Roll Eyes

Exact. Este cea mai bună variantă. Super corect și super profi.
1767  Other / Meta / Re: What happen when two person report the same post on: November 30, 2022, 05:30:25 PM
Self explanatory title. As it says, what will the status of the report when two person report the same post? Assume, I have reported a post after someone else have reported. What will be my report status? Will it be unhandled for the person who reported later or it be same as the previous reporter?

1. I am almost sure it's considered good for all the reporters if it's handled. Just make sure you don't report something you have already reported.
2. I think that in some cases (like plagiarism) it may even happen that it's handled only after multiple reports.
1768  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: I got hacked after downloading a file from https://multibitwallet.com on: November 30, 2022, 05:24:38 PM

The usual conclusion is: if you are not qualified enough to take care of your PC, or if you simply have some coins and want to make sure you don't lose them due to stupid mistakes, just buy a hardware wallet. And of course, don't ever put that wallet's seed anywhere online.

PS. Metamask alos has its fair share of scams too nowadays.
1769  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: got scammed by a forum user for 450$ in BTC on: November 30, 2022, 05:18:16 PM
was trusting him because he knew what he was talking about and has been a member of this forum for over a year without any negative feedback or flags.

So you've trusted (with 450$!!!!) a pretty much inactive account, with only 6 posts, just because it was not caught / tagged until now. Wow  Shocked
Next time learn about escrow (and also about impersonation!). Next time try to work with smaller amounts at a time... Sorry for the loss  Sad

I managed to find one of his alt accounts:

I've also tagged them both now.
1770  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] ChipMixer.com - Bitcoin mixer / Bitcoin tumbler - mixing reinvented on: November 30, 2022, 10:14:01 AM
Ngl, @chipmixer's silence about the tweet is quite concerning.

Have you, by chance, got to read up a few post earlier than yours? Chipmixer has given a pretty good answer imho.
And, realistically speaking, he cannot really prove it's not a government honeypot. Plus, it's the one making the accusation that has to prove it.

I mean, if I say, "Moses#7226 is an alien", what can you do to prove I'm wrong? Cheesy
1771  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Question about Privacy. on: November 30, 2022, 10:04:51 AM
Tails is an amnesic system so unless I set up persistent storage it should be all good.  Basically, every time you shut down the system everything you have done gets erased and every time you boot back up you are straight from the start.  Like you had to initialize Windows 11 every time you booted up your computer.  The beauty of Tails.

I knew this part about Tails. Live OS with no persistence  Wink
What I don't know is how exactly is Tor working, and this makes me unsure of some details.

In consequence, importing a single Private Key and broadcasting a single transaction from it prior to shutting down the system means once you reboot, it is like you never even used Electrum.  From a third perspective, it most likely looks as if every reboot is another user.

That's correct. But I don't know if Electrum's way to pick servers is that random and you may end up picking the exact same server from your next session, minutes later. What then? (Of course, it's a rhetorical question, we have answers already.)
That's why I suggested forcing different server on each new session, just to be on the safes side (not 100% safe, since you can also end up using 2 different gov-owned servers one after another).

Bitcoin Core, on the other hand, needs modifications for this to check/centralize/log what is coming from where, and even then they cannot be 100% sure because (I think that) what they receive may be an original broadcast or a forwarding (but I may be wrong in my assumptions).
1772  Other / Meta / Re: Connection reset during post thread/reply causes entire post to be lost. on: November 30, 2022, 09:51:35 AM
Seems like only satoshi could do this (if they were alive Sad )

Really?! So there are a lot of open source applications in bitcoin ecosystem and you have found only Satoshi's work?!
OK, he/they was/were/is/are genius and the trust is maximum, but since realistically we won't see him/them again, let's look for options that are possible.
1773  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Let's not be too judgemental about CZ (Binance) on: November 30, 2022, 09:42:32 AM
Advising us not to be too judgmental

OK, you may be somewhat right on this. I also try to not take sides and from my point of view you seem to be a tad on CZ side. But maybe it's the language barrier and I'm wrong...

2. Contrarily, he was aware of the bad situation of the company which made him want to sell all his shares there, but did not know it was that bad.

You've pretty much expressed the same thing I meant, just with the "contrarily" in front. Maybe I should have been a bit more clear Wink

3. And as for Coinbase and others, they can fire back at him and his company, I don't care, I don't entirely support him but some of his actions. What I want is for them to force regulation among themselves by revealing what they are doing wrong. Binance is not left out of this, let others attack it too and let people know what is going on in there in the bid to better protect people's money.

I also cannot care less for Coinbase, they are overall bad for the ecosystem, still the Americans prefer them. But Binance is not really better, and I cannot support CZ backstabbing, although it can bring good results for the ecosystem. But, let's just think, why didn't CZ do this kind of actions years ago? Instead of calling for transparency, he did odd (at best) actions many times in the "history" and Binance is faking its volumes just as badly as (or maybe even more than) the rest.

I find also funny that the funds he's proposing to aid other companies are all in his shitcoins, not in bitcoin. So, sadly, all his actions are not for the common good, they're cold business calculations.
1774  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: What if Grayscale had to sell all 643,572 bitcoins it has? Let's speculate. on: November 29, 2022, 06:41:26 PM
"Grayscale has used that capital to buy more and more BTC. Now, it's accumulated over 643,572 bitcoins, which is around $10.12 billion in assets as of the time of this writing"

Grayscale for sure is under a lot of pressure right now. As far as I know, they are struggling to find additional funds and one of the possible outcomes of this situation is that they might be forced to sell all the 643,572 bitcoins. How far BTC can drop if this will happen?

Let's speculate.

First of all, I don't think that they are that stupid to buy high and sell low. If they wanted to sell, they could have done that when the trend has change.
However, let's speculate: it would depend greatly on how much time they have. If time is not a big issue (but then why don't just wait a couple more months?) then they (or their brokers) would sell so slowly you may not even notice. Then the price may not even go noticeably lower. If they just dump everything (which would be overly stupid for their business too), then the price will go much lower, but I don't know how low - it depends if it's done in steps, it depends where and how big the support amounts are - but going down to 10k, 8k or even lower would not be a surprise, especially as such a move comes with public declarations - sooner or later - and all the panic and drama you can imagine.
1775  Other / Meta / Re: Connection reset during post thread/reply causes entire post to be lost. on: November 29, 2022, 06:32:27 PM
I know... but I for one have no interest in harvesting user data, it's just that I got my hands tied at the moment with other stuff.

Even better, just open-source both of them. Then operations will be crystal clear. I (thankfully) don't need to buy any servers to run this, because they only talk to Bitcointalk servers.

Indeed, open source would be the best. However, from what I see, I think that most of those coming with ideas for bitcointalk app wanted to also get a few cents too from google ads, since nobody came forward with an open source idea.

Link: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5423870.0

Organizator: smoothie

Reguli:
* o postare de persoană, dar poate conține mai multe "lucrări"
* postarea va conține cel puțin o monedă/un obiect de colecție legat de bitcoin (cu adresa de bitcoin probabil încețoșată)
* dacă am înțeles bine, nu trebuie neapărat poză cu bradul de Crăciun, ci orice îți trece prin cap, de exemplu poți să desenezi unul; dar trebuie să fie ceva original al tău, nu poză de pe net. Chiar se cere să iți scrii numele de utilizator pe o hârtie sau pe lucrare. Sau poate fi un film, dacă se pretează.
* data limită 25 Dec, 11:59 EST (GMT-5)
* cine dorește să participe la ambele concursuri trebuie să aibă (cel puțin) 2 decorațiuni diferite
* nu scrie nimic de transport, dar tare cred că este gratis doar in USA; până la urmă, există un risc cu monedele de argint...

1777  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Let's not be too judgemental about CZ (Binance) on: November 29, 2022, 06:00:33 PM
Yes, he's instrumental in crashing FTX, but is FTX and SBF guiltless?

1. You cannot really tell people what to think, OK? So that title is.. not the best choice.
2. I think that CZ was not aware of how very bad is the situation of FTX. So it was an ugly backstabbing, but on the other hand a lucky strike for uncovering a huge scam.
3. Keep in mind that CZ pretty much tried the same with Coinbase and although this exchange is a bit more solid and it was proven that CZ tweet on Coinbase was FUD (and soon removed), people still withdrew a could of billions worth of bitcoin from Coinbase (which is good if kept in self custody, but not great if just moved to another centralized system ie Binance).

So while it's most probably not CZ that orchestrated the huge scam at FTX, he's has his own "sins" and people have their right to judge him, at least for those.
1778  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core Conf File on: November 29, 2022, 05:47:57 PM
Hey guys. I was just curious if most people actually modify their .conf file. Do you set a limit on the connection? Do you set up rpc info? I was thinking of connecting it to a Ledger device. Any neat ideas on that? Thoughts?

I didn't manage to make my bitcoin core work with the Ledger HW, but I also didn't spend too much time on that, since I do prefer the way Electrum works with Ledger.
Hence after having Bitcoin node, I've also set up an Electrum Server (well, a block explorer too) and I use now my Ledger with Electrum on my local Electrum server over my local Bitcoin node.
I've documented my steps, including the bitcoin.conf contents, here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5367296

Some things may have changed slightly since then, I may double check one of the days...
1779  Economy / Digital goods / Re: Wondering how much my account is worth ? on: November 29, 2022, 05:41:01 PM
I just noticed that people were selling their bitcointalk account here
And I am wondering how much mine would be worth  Huh
It is almost 10 years old !

Long ago selling accounts was not a big problem. People didn't think that high level accounts can be used for scams. Signature campaigns were not the business they are now either.
Back then there was even a website that was calculating the worth of an account. But no longer.

Selling accounts is now stupid - although allowed officially, seller, buyer, the account to be sold will be tagged when caught. And it's a good step forward, since the reasons for such a deal can be at least shady, if not plain scam.
Plus now the merit system makes leveling up difficult for spammers, so the way the worth was calculated in 2013-2015 (I don't know the exact years) is different from what it would mean now.

All in all, it's very difficult to know how much it worth. And unless you want to get a no collateral loan (and then the lender will assess the worth and risks) or sell your account for a few bucks to an 1xbit spammer (yikes!) I am not sure why would you care...
1780  Other / Meta / Re: Connection reset during post thread/reply causes entire post to be lost. on: November 29, 2022, 05:08:24 PM
Makes me want to support the development of an unofficial iOS (and Android?) Bitcointalk app.

Actually it shouldn't be too hard anyway, you're not scraping any data. Just interacting with PHP endpoints that will probably never change within the next 50 years or so.

The problem is not the difficulty, it's the trust issue. Such an app could harvest sensitive data (starting with your password and continuing with the private messages), hence the few attempts for doing this were not really welcomed...
Plus, installing random apps onto the phone (possibly even directly from the apk in case of Android) is never a great idea.
