17741  Other / Meta / Re: "Last Post" Nonsense on: January 04, 2014, 08:53:04 PM
I keep trying to post in the Newbie forum, and every time I do, it tells me my last post was less than 180 seconds ago. This happens even though I haven't posted in at least a week.

How can I fix this?
Thanks!
James

Log-ins and searches also count. Just make sure you wait the full 180 seconds before you try.

Wouldn't a recaptcha help against spam bots? I'd certainly choose to guess a captcha occasionally than to rely on something that gets randomly baned.

I think it's probably more just banning users/connections that are spamming and scamming as opposed to bots, but I could be wrong.
17743  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What Do You Want to See in an Alt-Coin? on: January 04, 2014, 08:45:49 PM
I'm currently building an alt-coin for minimalists, perfectionists, and designers. What would you like to see in such a coin? I intend on totally revamping the UI for the QT wallet, I created stunning custom marks, and am working on a zen website that couldn't make it simpler to get started.

I don't want to see any more alts  Cheesy. Unless there's something revolutionary or unique I don't see the point.

I totally see your point. I just wish to leave my mark on the cryptocurrency community. My difference is that most alt-coins today can be ugly in design, install, building, mining, etc. My point in the creation of a new one is to remove all the clutter and make starting with the coin as easy as three button clicks.

I do think the wallets are pretty bland and look dated, but I reckon you'd be better off just designing a slicker wallet for Bitcoin.

One must leave plenty of room for doubt whenever Mr. Keiser provides us with such "hints," but, nonetheless, we need a thread to discuss the possibility:

https://twitter.com/maxkeiser/status/419497007678382080

On Reddit, people are wondering about the "recurring billing" problem with bitcoin.  But I'm thinking "view on demand"!  There would be a "View Now" QR-code next too each movie and when you pay it in bitcoin it immediately starts to stream.  No account required (or an automatic cookie-based account similar to just-dice.com).

Keiser is going to be the next Fontas.

maybe he is fontas

Or maybe he is Satoshi?

Or perhaps even both?

nah I think Charles Lee is satoshi

The Litecoin inventor?

ya .. I think it was invented by the Lee's brothers and backup by wealthy Chinese people.

Seriously? Alex Jones thinks Keiser is Satoshi BTW, but he's a fucking idiot.  Grin

17746  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Pot Goes on Sale in Colorado: Cash or Bitcoin Only on: January 04, 2014, 08:30:49 PM
so banks are boycotting  the pot business in Colorado so it is cash or bitcoin only, good news for both pot and bitcoin, although I expect soon enough some smaller regional banks will start to do business with the pot shop owners

They're either just scared or are not allowed to take money from these kind of businesses as it's still illegal federally.

Pretty confident it's the latter.  Banks are tied to the Fed. Gov, and MMJ is a State law.  Banks will never break a federal law...........  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

Well yeah, but they're scared of getting punished by federal law, so same thing I guess Cheesy
17747  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk.org = Bitcoin version of Alibaba on: January 04, 2014, 08:25:39 PM
Scammers welcome!

Scammers roam freely after they have ripped people off? Why does the board have moderators?

This is just like alibaba. There are no rules. "Do business with trustworthy people." "Use Escrow" Of course, but when the scammers are admitting to scamming people and continue to chat in the thread and post on the boards like nothing happened, this is ridiculous. Ive seen message boards ban people for saying the word nigger and yet someone can admit to stealing $80 from a board member without consequence.

I realize there is no way of protecting everyone. Can the board ban certain people and use their IP to make it a little more difficult to sign up using a different alias? Sure they will attempt other ways of scamming but jesus make it a bit less easy for them. Set up a BTC anti-scam account members can donate to and hire someone to monitor the marketplace.

I guess the argument they will make is that banning them wont stop them from scamming; they'll just create a new account and start over again with a fresh slate.
17748  Other / Off-topic / Re: Whats is your IQ? on: January 04, 2014, 08:23:56 PM
I've never been formally tested but i think my IQ is pretty high because of the things my college professors used to say to me. I had one professor tell me that, "only in America is it possible for someone of your caliber to graduate from an institution of higher education." Then he asked me how much money my parents donated to the university.

Same here, but I know I have a high IQ because my parents told me what a clever little boy I was continually as I child, so I must be special.

Yeah, you're special alright.

Thats where our convo got ugly, you see he's old, and he's british, and he got rooked on a really bad ponzi some years ago, something about Japanese trees lol. I tried talking about the debt cycle and the money thats backed by nothing, i even went on to explain that because someone put work in to get those coins out, they will always have value. no matter what it is, when you as a person put your time and effort into something you expect to be paid. BTC is no different. His issue, and I foresee will be most peoples issue, is that he doesn't understand the digital aspect. I suspect that until someone can adequately explain the process and the value, mainstream will be hard to win over.

Haha, Bonsai trees?

Bitcoin is difficult to explain and understand, so I feel your frustration, but some people just don't want to get it, or because they can't hold it they feel it doesn’t have any real value.

17751  Other / Meta / Re: (PETITION) The act of BUYING/SELLING Bitcointalk.org Accounts (Poll) on: January 04, 2014, 08:14:19 PM
Are we still seriously talking about this? No one likes the act of buying/selling accounts but we are not going to stop it. The staff have made that very clear.

It appears so. I'm sure this debate will rage as long as Bitcointalk exists itself.

I hope you're wrong

It will last as long as the why hasn't my activity changed? and the why can't I post anywhere? threads  Grin.

Lol.  Everyone thinks they are way way WAY above average.  Smiley

lol, So they should be, or at least hope that they are.

To be honest, being of average intelligence is not something to boast about.
17753  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: POST HERE if you came for the COINYE WEST Crypto! on: January 04, 2014, 08:08:25 PM
Coinye West won't be as succesfull as doge. Too many big miners will take part and simple, smalll miners thare are making this commmunity will mine too little to make it work

I think it could be just as big if not bigger. More people have heard of Kanye than the Dogememe. It's gonna be popular at the start for sure, but Dogecoin hasn’t exactly lasted long either.

Who gives a shit, who has heard about the name? What matters is who cares about it?, that is also into Bitcoin and Alt's. Nothing else matters much. A coin will not become popular because the name on it is popular. DUH!

And people only care about it because of the name, duh!

Thread already here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=398889.0

This just seems to be a rumour started by Keiser at the moment.
17755  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Max Keiser rumour: Netflix considering bitcoin on: January 04, 2014, 08:04:07 PM
Netflix is the only fiatstock I can be bothered with, since it's the only everpresently open window on my machines that isn't coin-related.

Thusly: Yay.

I don't and doubt I ever will use it, but I hope it's true. I'm betting it wont be though.
17756  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Hello All on: January 04, 2014, 08:03:04 PM
Hello all, I have been reading on here for quite some time now. Only decided to take a run at it a few days ago.
My question is this:
I would like to know how the community feels, one could explain bitcoin in laymen terms. I argued with my (70 yrs old) grandfather for the better part of christmas dinner, as to whether or not BTC is a ponzi. He, being old, and only mildly tech savy belives it is. Using words like block chain, public ledger, change the world, crypto-currency, only seemed to make him more confused.

How is bitcoin going to get to mainstream?
And more importantly, how are we, as a community, going to explain it to the masses?
(i dont mean here read a forum newb, i mean person to person)
Also, just for fun, I like to think of BTC as 100$ bills, and LTC as change ( im a canuck, so ltc is loonies and toonies) any thoughts?
Many thanks. Hope to get off of newbies so i can speculate with the rest of ya!

Satoshi has already made a 'killing', but he hasn't spent most of it. It only a's ponzi or pyramid scheme to those who don't understand how Bitcoin works. You could argue that Banks run ponzis/pyramid scams using their twisted logic.

Haha, yeah, not sure how I feel about this. I need to do some more research on it.

17760  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: thoughts on Bitgo - the most secure wallet 3-fa on: January 04, 2014, 07:48:23 PM
People are still using web wallets really? Did we not learn from blockchain.info.

What's wrong with blockchain.info?

People still get hacked on blockchain, but they are a lot better than most web wallets, and if they add trezor support like they plan on, they will be the most secure web wallet.

I think blockchain.info will probably be safer for a newb who doesn't really know waht they're doing, as long as they set up all the security features; 2 factor auth and a second password etc.
