1981  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2019-09-16] Darkweb criminals launder cash for bitcoin at pennies for dollar on: September 20, 2019, 01:11:37 PM
Pay 800 USD worth of bitcoin and get 10,000 USD in fiat money from a bank account via Western Union?
I don't get it.What makes this transaction clever?I guess that the hackers have access to way too much stolen bank accounts so they sell them at an extremely low price.

That's what was explained to my sluggish self.

Since whoever's paying winds up with cash I really don't get why they're not recruiting mules to cash out themselves and then they get the full amount but I'm not a criminal.

That's probably because they want to create a channel (specifically their victims for a broader investigation) where they may get skipped ahead if the ones who are paying them BTC are actually doing it for an illicit activity and so, they are also considered criminals here. It'd be very interesting to see how these criminals react when they come under the radar of those big criminals (the slave police of their sultry delinquent Government which is itself dipped in the mud of corruption till their last drop of blood).
1982  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is there a safe custom ROM with blockchain-based DApps? on: September 20, 2019, 12:58:09 PM
I came to know of a new issue with the phone after installing a custom ROM and that's screen-bleeding. Honestly, I don't really wish to mess with his smartphone and so, taking a lot of precautions before even trying to go ahead with the installation. Does CarbonOS have that sort of issue or is anyone aware of anything else? If there are no such issues with that OS, can somebody help me with the steps in installing CarbonOS specifically in Realme 2 pro?
1983  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Going to my first meetup on: September 20, 2019, 04:55:18 AM
I've had my first ever Blockchain meetup in the magical city Mumbai in 2018 where I met a lot of Bitcoin enthusiasts and even entrepreneurs who were looking to learn more about this technology and few of the Big Business Representatives were also looking for an experienced expert to work with them and help them understand this subject even better and they also wanted to know how they can merge blockchain with their businesses to get out of their current hassles. All in all, it was a great learning experience where they didn't specifically focus on a single thing but included every aspect of Blockchain and cryptocurrencies well presented chapter-wise (I mean topic-by-topic) to make everything easier to be understood by those available there.
1984  Other / Off-topic / Re: {Warning}: Vulnerabilities found on password manager LassPass on: September 20, 2019, 04:09:15 AM
It depends. Is it open source software that uses a tried and true method of encryption, or does it use a proprietary algorithm?

Keep in mind that a USB is also inconvenient. If you're using a non personal computer and needed to access your accounts, you likely wouldn't be able to connect the USB to your phone to find your passwords. Most password managers have apps that you can use.

Sorry for the late response.
Actually, I use Kingston's DT Locker+ G3 Secure USB Flash Drive with Cloud Backup which gives me top-notch security with their DataVault Security password protection software where, once set, you cannot derive the data without entering the password because it encrypts all the data inside the USB and only allows you to see it if you know the password. The only catch is that you need to remember the password because if you lose it, you lose the entire data as if you try to set up a new password (and even if someone who stole your USB tries to do it), it will immediately wipe off all the data inside and open the USB with a completely new session for the sake of maintaining security of the data in USB.
1985  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is there a safe custom ROM with blockchain-based DApps? on: September 19, 2019, 05:27:01 AM
You still missed on a query that if a custom ROM is installed, will the data (in the stock or old ROM) remain in the smartphone even after the installation?

most custom rom installation requires you to wipe the system and cache partition of your smartphone (and also the recovery part if you want to use twrp), a.k.a clean flash. so if by 'data' you mean your apps & its data, then it will disappear most of the time.

if you dirty flash it (that is, installing a new version of the same custom rom), there's a chance your apps will stay there, but most of the time this will soft-brick your phone. on the other hand, user data on the memory would not get wiped (unless you choose to wipe it).

basically, the cusrom installation over a stock rom is like this:

1. make sure the bootlader is unlocked, if not, unlock it (xiaomi newer phone require this iirc).
2. install a custom recovery (not mandatory but recommended so you can flash/wipe easily) and make sure it sticks.
3. backup the data/system/kernel for precaution. if you want to backup the apps, try titanium backup, migrator+ or migrate
4. wipe the system/cache/data (if you want to).
5. install the cusrom.
6. try to boot it up.

i'm not really familiar with realme customization, those steps are based on my experience with bricking and fixing my xiaomi phones multiple times. but i believe the steps are not that different. and for the blockchain-related apps, i never see one in my life. maybe because it's really easy to install the apps, unlike viper or magisk which might be tricky for some.

Thanks for stepping in.
I will definitely try this by taking his phone for a day or two.
After installing the custom ROM, will all the features work properly or the phone may face issues with a fewer ones (based on your experience with custom UIs)?

One more question:
Is it possible to get back to the original stock ROM if the person decides not to use the installed custom ROM for any reasons?
And will the process be same like installing the stock ROM back or will it be something else?
1986  Other / Off-topic / Re: {Warning}: Vulnerabilities found on password manager LassPass on: September 19, 2019, 05:02:13 AM
I'd rather choose to save my username and passwords in either Notepad or create a table/sheet in Microsoft Word/Excel and save it there and keep the document saved in a USB rather than keeping in a PC which remains connected to internet.

That's even worse as there's no encryption. If someone finds your USB, say goodbye to all of your logins. You're also plugging the USB into a internet connected computer most likely when you need to login. The LastPass vulnerability was most likely never used until it was patched and it still required a very specific situation.

If it is of a specific brand that enables encryption of data by allowing us to put up a password before any of the data of that USB be used, and the password is an extremely complex one, will it still be possible for someone getting my USB to crack that password and/or encryption and take away all the data in that USB?
1987  Other / Off-topic / Re: {Warning}: Vulnerabilities found on password manager LassPass on: September 19, 2019, 03:21:18 AM
Why not simply use the in-built password manager in any browser like Chrome or Firefox? Do we really need a password managing software here? I save all my passwords generally in Chrome's password manager not just to save my time like gentlemand but most of my saved passwords are from websites where 2fa is required and I don't need the hassle of remembering the password every single time I login there.
Because Chrome and Firefox password savers are the same as giving out your information to LastPass, they still have access to your information, and lastpass works better then chrome, and has a lot more features then them.

Well then, that remains the case with all types of password managers even if they provide better features because if they don't know your password, how will they engage with the website and pass your password ahead from their database.

http://techgenix.com/are-password-managers-security/

An article I read, said that in 2018, two of the most popular password managers OneLogin and LastPass (which OP alerted about) were hacked and sensitive data of customers got leaked due to the same. I know that browsers are more vulnerable to attacks in comparison to these managers, but now I'd rather choose to save my username and passwords in either Notepad or create a table/sheet in Microsoft Word/Excel and save it there and keep the document saved in a USB rather than keeping in a PC which remains connected to internet.
1988  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Is there a safe custom ROM with blockchain-based DApps? on: September 19, 2019, 03:09:35 AM
Thanks for your responses.

--snip--

Depends on the custom ROM, if you enable encryption, don't root your OS and have common sense, you should be safe.

I actually knew about it but wanted to confirm it, and as well, the type of reply I wanted was made from aundroid, it actually helped a lot. Smiley

My strongest advice here to newbies:
You should never, hear me with fully open ears, never ever go for passwords provided by these password managers because there you are prone to losing almost everything as if they know what you have used (if they don't keep them saved as encrypted with themselves, they can easily know that). I would never prefer any such services where such suggestions are given, but would rather stick to my old techniques.
1991  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Is there a safe custom ROM with blockchain-based DApps? on: September 18, 2019, 03:28:16 PM
My friend has a Realme 2 Pro smartphone and the stock ROM that he's using, i.e.; ColorOS 6 is not too much cool and disliked by him and me too when I used his smartphone for 3 days. Now, he wants to learn some stuff about Bitcoin and blockchain and interested in some blockchain-based DApps, but he seems to have some fear that a few apps may come with some sort of malware (he's a bit lazy and not interested in researching about it), so he's looking for a custom ROM which he wants to install - that must have blockchain-related apps come inbuilt with it. He hates the OS software updates that come every now and then in ColorOS and wishes to get freed from its torture.

At one point, my brain asked me a question that I would like to ask too.

Is it seriously safe for the smartphone if we change the Stock ROM with a newly installed custom ROM?

Does all the data remain safe and in the smartphone itself even after the installation of custom ROM?
1992  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Fake trade volumes on: September 13, 2019, 11:58:23 PM
Trust me, there's no exchange here that doesn't create fake volumes. There are some basic things in my mind I'd like to share:

Exchanges create fake volume in order to:

- Gain more customers' attraction to bring in more people
- Make the alt more popular to get it listed somewhere else on a more reputed exchange if this exchange holds some % as a stake
- Get more people to trade it to earn on fees (like Binance's trading competition)
- To make people believe that they've got the steam in order to get the exchange going as high volume is all we look for if we've got enough stake in an alt we decide to sell at some point
1993  Economy / Economics / Re: Differences between an investor and common man! on: September 13, 2019, 11:45:50 PM
This is the wrong mentality people (especially like OP) have here that investors never take out loans. They do, but not to the extent a common man borrows because investors would suck out the money off the opportunity they get and invest it into something that can gain them a higher % of what they are expected to repay but a common man would just focus on the desire for which he took out the loan due to which his/her mentality remains fixed (or I should say stiff) while being limited to that level only and that common man will never think anything ahead of it.
1994  Local / India / Re: What is the actual state of crypto currency in India? on: September 13, 2019, 11:33:10 PM
They exactly pointed out your transaction details or asked in general? If they asked with particular reference then the chances of from bank is high.I never get any calls like these but you also don't have to give any of your confidential details while someone called and saying they are from banks.
It was not some random call, i verified before attending the call and it came from my Axis bank branch where i hold the account. They specially asked about one paytm transaction someone sent me last year and the main point they inquired is whether i trade virtual currency. Is this some form of evidence collection from IT office through banks  Huh.

Maybe, because even if you don't show your earnings, I know few people who trade cryptocurrencies and show their earnings exactly as the same and pay taxes over it. Maybe, to cross check with you whether the trade was actually happened between you both or not could be the case here. I faced the same situation when once my Kotak Bank head contacted me (after RBI ban) to ask me the same question because he already knew that I used to deal in Bitcoins (I already clarified this at the time of opening my account there but thank God I still have my account safe there). Fortunately, I stopped taking money for my crypto deals in my Kotak Bank account and started using a different account to settle such transactions in cash through the same.
1995  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: BITSTARZ IS A SCAM - DO NOT DEPOSIT A DIME POSSIBLE CLASS ACTION on: September 13, 2019, 11:08:08 PM
If it was a big win it should be under there maximum pay out so the win being too big is a blatant disregard of customers right. I consider that a bad move for the site for this would show on their reputation

It's a broke site. they are going bankrupt.

I guess that when these casinos get to show their true colors by getting lower and lower with their services, they test every inch and get to limits under ground to tighten up the customer and put all the blame on that person itself because their sole intent is to save themselves from paying the winnings to the one who deposited such huge amounts. You were not even one of those lucky people who win jackpots or even x times through a small bet (like deposited 0.01 BTC and made 1 or 2 BTC) but your deposit was almost 1/3rd of your cash out amount and I ROFL'd when I saw that guy Chris saying a straight NO.

Did they already mention this KYC thing in their terms and conditions before you registered? Because if they didn't, they can't even ask for such things from you. But if you still complied with all their rules and didn't get your withdrawal, I believe that your coins are gone because they're "not in the mood to even give you your deposit back, so there's no chance of winnings".
1996  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I made a big Mistake on: September 13, 2019, 10:48:09 PM
there isnt really an advantage to downloading a full node these days as they take up a not so small amount of space. id honestly stick to using lightweight or even online wallets... suprised no one has metions one of the oldest and most trusted online wallent https://www.blockchain.com/ (AKA blockchain.info) id just use them, remeber a good password for both your email address and wallet are esential and dont use the same for both. enable 2FA so any login needs an email conformation too... you pretty much sorte then and can have a neat little moble app if you want to take it with you.

Blockchain.com is an online wallet which is prone to many vulnerabilities like the hacker can even get access to your wallet if they can hack your mobile number if you've set your 2fa through receiving SMS on your mobile. They can also do the punycode attack where they'd just simply show you the exact same page where, without checking the URL, if you input all the info needed to login and even your code and if the hacker is aware of it, say Sayonara to all your coins. I'd personally not use Blockchain these days as they don't show you the privkeys of the addresses you use because they're mostly one-time use sort of addresses being presented there and there's something you should know that you only own your Bitcoins if you own your private keys.
1997  Other / Off-topic / Re: [Warning] Instagram Phishing attempts on: September 13, 2019, 10:29:15 PM
OP, isn't it the punycode attack where they try to impersonate URLs and send Unicode to the address bar and make people believe that it's the original URL when most guys don't even bother to check where they are visiting?

I'm quoting a post from a different thread where crairezx20 has explained already about this case and shared a thread that shows everything about how to keep yourself safe from such attacks in Firefox through a detailed guide.

Why the Punycode attack is not listed or mention above?

This is one of the Electrum attacks before even you see the legit URL which is electrum.org we cant see if the site is fake or not but if you copy and paste the URL to notepad it will show the true URL.

I know you can disable Punycode in firefox but I don't know how for chrome.

For safety better use firefox instead and disable punnycode get more info from this post here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5178198.0
1998  Economy / Economics / Re: Your Source of Investment Money? on: September 13, 2019, 09:50:17 PM
I used to do signature campaigns and that can be called my major investment in BTC through time where I didn't need to purchase BTC. But that doesn't mean that I never purchased it, I've bought it in pieces every now and then, and even sold in profits (yeah, I'm not a long term hodler after the 2018 crash, eh). About the credit card thing, honestly speaking I don't have one currently and even if I had, I would not be able to buy BTC at least with that due to the restrictions and bans levied on purchase of cryptocurrencies through these instruments ATM in my country.
1999  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I need Help finding or recovering bitcoins off an old hard drive on: September 13, 2019, 05:59:59 PM
About four years ago, I bought my friend some donuts. He downloaded the bitcoin wallet app on my amazon blu phone and gave me $10 worth of bitcoin instead of cash. Since then I have switched over to an iphone, and completely forgot about my bitcoin account until recently. Is there a way to recover my bitcoin account? I know nothing about anything.

Do you have the wallet file saved with yourself anywhere?
Do you have the phrase / seed saved with you? Which wallet was that exactly? Did he put any password to protect the wallet? If yes, do you know it?

And there's nothing such a Bitcoin account, but Bitcoin wallets and addresses.
2000  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What are Merits to you? on: September 13, 2019, 05:40:57 PM
To those of you who believe that Merits aren't something valuable for me just because I hold a degree (rank) that you don't, you're completely wrong here. I actually wanted to create a chaos by making everyone aware of the fact that how badly merits are being misused to some extent. I never targeted specific users who came ahead in this thread and talked about themselves - whether it's about them being merited or they merit someone. I don't doubt / judge anybody's abilities here but only wanted to give a message with the chaotic subject here that it is made to determine what quality is, but I believe that the way it's being spread throughout various genres where it is undeserving, then it should not be, in any case, a measure of quality any further at least on the basis of my point of view. I never targeted those who are good at meriting best posts with humor but against them who are giving them to the wrong people. I bet you can't deny that there have been posts that don't deserve anything but got merited and there are some well deserving posts waiting to be merited yet. It's a shame that a thought that came at theymos' heart keeping in his mind the future, is also not being used in its proper way. Anyways, I never meant merits are nothing to me, else I'd never say that merits are rewards and a responsibility to circulate it forward at your desired convenience, but in current conditions, it's just that we cannot say that anyone having xxx amount of merits have a really good quality (there is an extremely high exception to this statement of mine for a lot of users).

To me, Rerit is really important .Unfortunately, many people are misusing it in their own way . But many people need it for make money from bounty.Whereas, Merit don’t say about judge anybody’s chareacter , quality of post ,….That just a remit for this forum. You know I’m bounty hunter , I have 378 activity and I’m just newbie cause I need to merit for up rank . If you talk “ Merit “ is kinda “ Like “feature for you so you true.

Get to understand and write English in somewhat better way and don't repeat your words nor mine and I bet you'll receive your first merit as soon as you expect.
