441  Other / Meta / Re: Create an option to get an e-mail notification someone logs in on: June 05, 2019, 06:05:28 PM
If you are infected with malware, it is possible someone could access your account without logging in. The hacker could possibly access your account locally on your computer, or they could copy the cookie used to validate you and logged in.

Well, I realize that my proposed solutions won't make someone's security foolproof.  Just another pesky pawn that one could place to get in the way of the hacker's queen.
442  Other / Meta / Re: [BAN] Sr. Member tvplus006 - 459 merits [all earned] on: June 05, 2019, 04:17:53 PM
Could be, but it's also not uncommon for plagiarists to try to stay on topic by copying something from earlier in the thread.

Having said that, I don't mind them getting a soft ban, just don't want to start the whole done-it-only-once-was-young-and-stupid excuse bingo Smiley
I would say, that it is not that case: there is no «plagiarism» mistake in situation when someone helps another one person in bounty (!!!) topic. If it would be a regular problem for him, then it could be so, but one time for 1803 posts copied answer of bounty manager to answer another user is not plagiarism at all. If we ask for more attributive quoting, well, it could be mistake of not enough attribution. Mistake, but not a crime, not a plagiarism. All — my IMHO.

Unfortunately, we have caught bumping bots that just recycle the same questions and answers using various alt account to make it appear like different participants. When caught, the account that gave the answer could just state "they were being helpful."
443  Other / Meta / Re: Create an option to get an e-mail notification someone logs in on: June 05, 2019, 03:52:49 PM
I have changed the poll and topic to explore if it would be better to just have the option to get notified whenever they log in.

Edit: I forgot to take a screen shot of the previous poll. It was 9 to 5 in favor of adding an option to get e-mail notification when sending a PM.
444  Other / Meta / Re: Create an option to get an e-mail notification when a PM is sent on: June 05, 2019, 12:45:37 PM
If it's just an Option that can be checked and unchecked, then the hackers will disable the option when they are using victims' accounts to send messages just like they would u check "save copy to my inbox"

My suggestion is that maybe we have the account automatically locked when there is a sudden change in the IP address log from the usual pattern accompanied with a verification email with information about a mandatory security check.
2FA will not be implemented on this forum software. Maybe on the new forum software. This has been suggested multiple times but nothing has been done.
I already thought about hackers disabling the option.
Also, an e-mail notification would be sent whenever someone decides to opt-in or opt-out.
If a hacker was trying to cover his tracks by disabling, sending PM and then enabling again, you would get 3 e-mails. It would probably be better if someone had the option of getting a text by phone. However, I'm not sure this is possible, or if this site even wants to store something as sensitive as a phone number.

How about the option of making the "save a copy to my outbox" a default setting that can't be changed and message saved in outbox can only be deleted after certain number of days like 30days period.

Some people may not want a certain PM stored in their outbox for any period of time. They may want to convey some personal information that they also request the receiver delete when they are done with it. I realize there are better ways to go about this, though.
445  Other / Meta / Create an option to get an e-mail notification someone logs in on: June 05, 2019, 06:22:30 AM
Recently, we had an incident where a member states that PMs were sent from his account, without him being aware. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5150479.0 It definitely is possible for a hacker to log into someone's account, send a PM with the "save a copy to my outbox" unchecked, and the real owner of the account not being made aware. Would it do any good to allow an option to be notified by e-mail whenever a PM is sent from your account? Also, an e-mail notification would be sent whenever someone decides to opt-in or opt-out. Perhaps these e-mails can also come with an option to lock the account.

Edit:Perhaps just having the option to get notification when someone logs into your account would be better. It doesn't even need to include the ip like many sites have implemented. That way, a hacker cannot circumvent it by simply turning the option off since you would be notified of the initial log in. Also, an option to either lock the account or automatically log off all sessions with the e-mail would be helpful.
446  Other / Meta / Re: Remove avatars of banned members on: June 05, 2019, 02:49:54 AM
I don't see anything wrong if someone wear avatar of Bestmixer or any companies here. Best Mixer, was one of biggest mixer services for years, and they did not dissapear just after a click of mouse to wipe out their site and their platform. In addition, I don't see potential troubles for users whom still wear Best Mixer avatars, no matter what they are active users or permanent banned users.

However, if avatars of permanent banned users won't be automatically removed. Why not allow permanent banned users rights to take their avatars off? I am not sure that currently those perm-banned users can do this or not (guess not).
I'm not sure if avatar functionality is disabled or not. However, a crafty person could attempt to use avatars to convey messages, which would be a work around to the posting ban.
447  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Weird emails and pms about a paypal transaction I never made on: June 05, 2019, 02:35:16 AM
Perhaps there should be an option to be notified by e-mail whenever a personal message is sent, not just received. As we can see, a hacker can do quite a bit of damage by just sending PMs, right under the rightful account holder's nose.
448  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Weird emails and pms about a paypal transaction I never made on: June 05, 2019, 01:20:08 AM
So the fact that I opened a bitcointalk account has exposed me to unlimited liability? That's pretty scary to me.  Shocked
449  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk Charity Fund on: June 05, 2019, 12:15:32 AM
I think the poll should be taken before the funds are collected. I am leery of giving funds to a charity fund and after the poll, it ends up being for a cause that I don't agree with.
450  Other / Meta / Re: [BAN] Sr. Member tvplus006 - 459 merits [all earned] on: June 04, 2019, 10:54:17 PM
As long as the new ban bot is concerned that is the one which is responsible for the current bans, I think a small modification in the code should satisfy that condition. Like the bot creator can check if the copied posts are written in 2017 or less and the count of copy-pasted posts is > 2.

The bot might be a myth, though...
451  Other / Meta / Re: [BAN] Sr. Member tvplus006 - 459 merits [all earned] on: June 04, 2019, 10:41:06 PM
I'm not really in support for the ban for users who are above Hero+ and have 1 or maximum 2 posts copy-pasted. Like in terms of signature gains, how much they would have made copying the two posts? If the posts are from 2017 and less then they should be given another chance instead of a perma-ban. It's sad to see a legendary member getting banned for copying one post in 2016.

Unfortunately, Hero+ accounts sell for a premium, so people can get in good sig campaigns and sling their sig all over the place. Also, I'm not sure that we can expect a moderator to sift through an account's post history to see what the extent of the plagiarism truly is. I suspect that tvplus may have other copy paste posts, since suchmoon exposed that he was prone to copy/paste a quick answer. Also, I believe suchmoon revealed that with the tools that she uses, searching through a post history is much more difficult than just going through a shitty megathread and finding hits.

Is this even a pro Bitcoin meme? What is Bitcon core?
453  Economy / Reputation / Re: Time's up for DT members who left negative feedback for Thule on: June 04, 2019, 09:42:15 PM
I got a letter. I don't get many of those so it must be the long-awaited Thule's letter. It's offering a free cruise, which is a bit confusing. Maybe the Internet Court is in Bahamas.

Make sure that you read the fine print. I would hate for you to end up getting stuck sharing the same closet-size cabin with Thule.

Since it appears that the results are inconclusive

Better now? Smiley

Meh, tvplus just was answering a noob's question and parroted what the OP had answered to another user. I think the intent was to be helpful rather than upping their post count for financial gain.
455  Other / Meta / Re: [BAN] Sr. Member tvplus006 - 459 merits [all earned] on: June 04, 2019, 07:11:02 PM
If not for plagiarism, your account may be banned for low-quality posts as most of your old posts are just bounty-related stuff. You started finding scams and other detective work very recently for which you got most of the merits. I could be wrong though.

All the more reason for this user to be given a temporary posting ban and a signature ban for 2 years. Recently they have become a net positive for the forum and I don't think we should banish this user to the dog house forever.

Moderators replied on almost all of ban appeal thread and reply the reason of ban. But wondering why moderators are silent on "tvplus006" case. At least we could see the plagiarism post that OP got ban for. We can't judge before know the mistakes. So we want to know what was the post/mistake ?
Moderators are not bound to reply to such threads, they do it out of their choice. If you're that curious, maybe you should open OP's profile and look for plagiarised posts?

A moderator did reply to this thread, but had no info.

I don't know what it's for as there's no handled reports in the queue but I'm guessing it was probably for plagiarism.

Since it appears that the results are inconclusive, I think tvplus006 should be granted a temp ban.
456  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: I have been scammed twice. Stop these scammers from scamming again. on: June 04, 2019, 05:40:41 PM
The blames is on you because you trust so easily, there's some easy and safe way to do that but you prefer to use Telegram which is now the home of scammers, in the first place people have been warned of too many scammers lurking there you did not do an investigation before sending your money.

Yes, after reading the interchange between the OP and the second scammer, it was discussed to do the transaction through localbitcoins, but the OP wanted to save on fees. I hope that if there is a next time, the OP will just go through localbitcoins or use a trusted escrow. Paying the extra fees would have been well worth it. On the second transaction, I'm not sure what localbitcoins would have charged extra for the fees, but I'm sure it was really not that much.

But it is needed, unfortunately because people like you only focus on the scammers. I would compare it to incidents of rape. People LOVE getting all bent out of shape about "victim blaming", and while the perpetrator obviously holds guilt, the victim also has agency and needs to understand that certain behaviors put them at greater risk. Walking around in a dark alley in a city center in the middle of the night for example, while one has every right to do, is still risky behavior. We need to be teaching people how to avoid these dark alleys, not just decrying the evil deeds of the evil people who will always be there. Teach people how not to be victims, don't just give them a hug and send them back into that dark alley.

To address your analogy and this case, there are ways to give the victim constructive advise on how to be more secure going forward without resorting to call the victim stupid or some other harsh adjectives.
457  Other / Meta / Re: 2 shitpost and 10 merit. For new acc from Legendary member. on: June 02, 2019, 11:44:17 PM
If I have a thousand sMerit, surely, I will fly it to those who are entitled to receive it, obviously.

There is nothing wrong with the actions of anyone who gives sMerit. But I feel this is one of the most ridiculous things, for people who like it. This is annoying, for today's achievements, many people abuse it.

I think this Merit is based on, Emotional someone in spilling anger.

I am not claiming that this is wrong or true that happened.
But there are exceptions.
As it is now also happening to:
1. Jimmy Crypto

I thought and saw many members in this Forum who gave decent posts to get Merit, but precisely what happened was only seen begging, for one s Merit for those who deserved it, it was ironic, and boring.

All three of these merited posts are deleted as spam.  Cheesy
458  Economy / Reputation / Re: Merit Abuse for spreading Bitcoin FS on: June 02, 2019, 05:45:12 PM
In the minutes before you created this topic, I reported 17 of his posts for spam. They're still Unhandled, let's see if he gets banned.
It's an old account. I didn't check exactly, but he may have posted in enough 14 day periods to have enough "potential Activity" to reach Full Member. A bit more spam and we'll know, unless he gets banned first Tongue
I forgot about that. I counted 8 alone on his first two pages. He'll have enough activity. Just needs to conjure up more merits.
(Looks like Microguy gave him 5 more for a shit post.)
459  Economy / Reputation / Re: Merit Abuse for spreading Bitcoin FS on: June 02, 2019, 05:24:12 PM
Meaning nothing can be done for such act of merit abuse? The said account is spreading some unrealistic projects across the forum. Another question for the DT: Does those replies worth such merit? How do you allow this to go just like that, becasue of prove? Believe me, there's nothing on the merited replies; that merit even one (merit) to talk of 25 and 20 merit at a blow.  Huh
Giving red trust for merit abuse is generally considered a no no unless there is a solid case of merit sale or merits between alt accounts. Theymos can reverse merits; however the giver is not a merit source. Therefore, the only way that I can see Theymos reversing the merits is if it can be established that the giver is a hacked account.
460  Economy / Reputation / Re: Merit Abuse for spreading Bitcoin FS on: June 02, 2019, 04:47:56 PM
It definitely looks dubious. However, we need more proof that it is actually a merit sale before tagging the account. Since the merit sale was probably done offsite, in secrecy, it will be hard to prove this.

Edit: It is interesting that the receiver opened a topic on how to get an avatar, just yesterday. Now it appears the receiver is posting frantically and magically gets huge merits for some rather skimpy posts. Unfortunately for him, his activity can only go up by 14 per 2 weeks. It will take over a month for him to get the required activity to be a full member and more than double the merits he currently received.
