1321  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 23, 2018, 08:01:03 PM
so true...
I don't think the average schmuck has a concept that one can still be way up
on an asset that has just plunged from 20k to 4k in less than a year.

Well, when I explain to the average schmuck that I bought in late 2014 and summer of 2015, it becomes crystal clear to them that even at this price, I am way ahead. Also, I have not been very good at HODL. Sold little chunks since November of 2017 to pay bills and keep afloat. Only disappointment is that BTC didn't go high enough for this minnow to be financially set. However, what can someone really expect from a total investment that was probably less than $2000 USD for me? My biggest regret is that I didn't have the balls to just buy more in 2014 and 2015 or even start earlier when I first became aware of BTC back in 2012. Oh well, it's all water under the bridge.
1322  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Scaling Solution Without Lightning Network... on: November 23, 2018, 06:03:11 PM
Perhaps, but since @franky1 regularly tell us how Bitcoin is dying since there are "fewer transactions". The case you mention is not supposed to happen so, or just randomly (during the Christmas month with all people buying the gifts lol). There is no problem anymore with the fees or congestion by following him
We just want to give people a better alternative to using the banking system. If we are just going to try and herd people into using lightning network, is that system really any better? If BTC ever gets wide adoption, it won't even be affordable for many to open a LN channel for themselves. They will just have to rely on some gateway service to open channels, and your "share" of the channel will just be kept track of by the gateway service. The casual user will just need to rely on some third party, and hope that they are not "hacked."
To get back somewhat on topic a little. I think if BTC can implement some kind of system where a node can validate each and every transaction without having to initially devote enough hard disk space, that would be great. My understanding of pruning is that you initially have to devote the required hard disk space before you can prune. I'm not certain the OPs proposal is the best way to go about this with the sharding.
1323  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Scaling Solution Without Lightning Network... on: November 23, 2018, 05:06:01 PM
@franky1
This is what we call being proactive and anticipation. The example you give about the SegWit roadmap from 2014 is one example. Are we forced to use SegWit? As DoomAD says, they cannot integrate everyone's wishes, but they anticipate to make Bitcoin usable with various convenients solutions. It's like complaining because someone is working to improve Bitcoin and talk about consensus. A consensus from the mass could turn in a 10 years old kid decision.

No, we are not forced to use Segwit. However, if someone chooses not to use Segwit, you are penalized by paying higher fees. This may only amount to pennies at the moment, but it can add up. If BTC starts to get used even more, many casual users will then be compelled to use LN, to avoid prohibitive fees.
1324  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Bitcoin Cash - Pro on-chain scaling - Cheaper fees on: November 23, 2018, 04:41:26 PM
Can someone point to where it says bitcoin was supposed to be decentralized in the white paper?

It doesn't. It just states that it is p2p electronic cash. However, it is much better to have many entities mining rather than fewer entities mining. More entities mining helps ensure that the mining nodes are competing rather than colluding. If you make the barrier for entry too high, you end up with an oligarchy that have a good likelihood of entering into a cartel. (Although it is abundantly clear in BCH case that the two big mining alliances in BCH are actually competing. However, it has resulted in a split, and now each chain is mostly being support by one alliance. I wouldn't go so far as state that it is a "cartel" but it is obvious that both the BCHABC chain is now run by Bitmain and it's allies and BCHSV is now run by nChain and it's allies.)
Also, in order to be true p2p electronic cash, it would be nice if most people have the option of performing an independent audit of what the miners are actually doing, by running a full node. Although a proper SPV wallet can assure that at least your transactions are valid, it would be nice to be assured that the miners are not colluding and pulling some dubious shit. If you make it prohibitively expensive for anyone to be able to conduct their own audit, we all have to rely on the fiscally capable to keep tabs on the miners. How is that really any better of an alternative than just using banks which are controlled by a central bank of the government?

Eth indeed made it possible to launch ICO's but there were shitton of altcoins even before eth and everybody can create one whenever they like.

Well not everybody... I tried my hand at creating a shitcoin and just couldn't make it work. Of course, I can't even program "Hello, world" without a step by step guide. That probably has a lot to do with it.I haven't tried creating an ERC20. Maybe someday when I get very bored.  Cheesy

I was just checking online and think that I found a new Lambo that I can afford.

https://erepairables.com/salvage-cars-auction/lamborghini

Buy it while we are still at 4k. Otherwise soon you won't be able to afford even that.

Unfortunately, seller has not set a sale date.  Angry

1329  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why are some people still skeptical about climate change? on: November 22, 2018, 08:45:34 PM
If I recall correctly, the upper stratosphere of Venus is highly reflective, so little IR from below gets out.

As for the pressure, a quick google search shows...

The atmospheric pressure at the surface of Venus is about 92 times that of the Earth, similar to the pressure found 900 m (3,000 ft) below the surface of the ocean. The atmosphere has a mass of 4.8×1020 kg, about 93 times the mass of the Earth's total atmosphere.

Thus the mass of air on Venus does approximate pressure. It's mostly CO2 down low, so it would be near liquid, very viscous like trying to walk underwater. Its gas envelope has reached equilibrium conditions.

From my google search, it appears the main reason that the atmosphere of Venus is thicker is because it is hot enough for the rocks themselves to leach out the carbon dioxide. In Earth's case, what is likely to happen is a warmer troposphere will result in a slightly thicker atmosphere due to water evaporation.(warm air can hold much more water vapor than cooler air.)  This effect will likely counter any loss of atmosphere into space due to expansion. Especially since Earth has the benefit of having a robust magnetic field which protects the atmosphere from being stripped by the solar wind.
However, I will acknowledge that we just don't know all of the factors. It is possible that the meting of polar ice will disrupt the sea currents and make some regions cooler. This could then self regulate, by causing more snow and the ice caps would become bigger again.
1330  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why are some people still skeptical about climate change? on: November 22, 2018, 08:07:56 PM
....

You don't know a damned thing about science. You just learned propane and hydrogen turn into liquids when compressed a couple weeks ago and think cars explode when you shoot the gas tank with a gun.
...

I do have to admit, T relation to P is first chapter chemistry. You know, just thinking about that. T relation to P. And that good old constant R.

if a ball of gas around a planet got hotter due to climate change, it would become ... a bigger ball...Gosh, then there would be more radiative surface area to that ball, and more of that bad greenhouse heat would escape. Wait, if that ball expanded from that bad greenhouse heat, what percent of that bad greenhouse energy went to lift molecules higher against gravity?

I don't think the mechanism that you describe is accurate. Venus is way hotter than Earth and the atmospheric pressure is 90 times that of Earth on its surface.
1331  Other / Meta / Re: Is merit abuse an issue worthy of temp banning or at least DT negative trust? on: November 22, 2018, 06:56:27 PM
Obviously, the best way to deal with suspected merit abuse coming from a merit source is to bring it to theymos' attention rather than add a comment to the person's trust page. The post Theymos made was in a reputation thread with someone disagreeing with the way QuestionAuthority was handing out merits. I responded with some insecure paranoia that I would start getting red trust simply because people don't agree with how I hand out merits. In the end, QuestionAuthority ended up having his merit source status stripped from him.
Also, theymos did make a comment somewhere that he has the power to reverse merit transactions, if need be.

Seems like he was only posting helpful annoucements

Please clarify, do you mean helpful posts like this one?

I agree, I would think a commercial service would not mind that their announcement is being disseminated, even "plagiarized." Isn't that what going "viral" is all about? The only thing that they would have issue with is if the person modified the links to direct to a phishing website or other scam.

Is this what happened there ? or are you just giving an example of what we need to be careful about?

Here is the post that was reported and acted upon.
As above, plagiarism. This was the post that was reported:

this looks like something like a DPoS chain where, delegates are Provisioners but in this case Blocks generation isn't a delegate's task but there other light nodes doing that. I've yet to understand why is more efficent then a DPoS system

I think I saw something similar in Multiversum blockchain project: it looks like something like a DPoS chain where, delegates are Provisioners but in this case Blocks generation isn't a delegate's task but there other light nodes doing that, but I've yet to understand it correctly...

I suppose that it is a nice touch that the OP was more specific as to the project. However, he could have just put together his own words instead of copying someone's post and then modifying it. Even a ftfy quote would have been more appropriate.

1334  Other / Meta / Re: Legendary account banned? on: November 22, 2018, 04:58:12 PM
Seems like he was only posting helpful annoucements, it's not like he was deceiving people with stolen content. A perm ban seems unfair imo.

I agree, I would think a commercial service would not mind that their announcement is being disseminated, even "plagiarized." Isn't that what going "viral" is all about? The only thing that they would have issue with is if the person modified the links to direct to a phishing website or other scam.
However, it appears that the post that was actually reported was not an announcement but a direct copy paste of another user's brief analysis.
1335  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Plans of attack for bitcoin? on: November 22, 2018, 03:45:47 PM

2 - Get a list of every word in the dictionary.  You can generate keys using "phrases" as a seed.  Try all the words and then all the combinations of words.  Just like my Blockchain wallet.

Actually, you don't need to list every word in a dictionary. With BIP39, there are only 2048 words to chose from. However, the longer the seed becomes, the more difficult it becomes to try and brute force it. Also, if a person decides to add a password on top of it, it becomes even more difficult.
1336  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Core 0.17.0 Released on: November 22, 2018, 04:46:02 AM
hey guys, what about the older versions? can i still use them?

I would not recommend running the following versions of Bitcoin Core because they contain a major bug.

0.14.0
0.14.1
0.14.2
0.15.0
0.15.0.01
0.15.1
0.16.0
0.16.1
0.16.2

The bug was fixed in 0.14.3, 0.15.2, & 0.16.3.

You can read more about the serious bug, here. https://bitcoincore.org/en/2018/09/20/notice/
If you are using another wallet besides Bitcoin core, you may want to make sure you are not running a version with the vulnerability. Since the pools and miners are now running nodes that are corrected, any malicious miner running the vulnerable software is likely to have the blocks orphaned quickly. However, your node could be fooled for a short period of time if you are running the vulnerable software.
1337  Other / Meta / Re: Merit & new rank requirements on: November 22, 2018, 01:37:53 AM
hey guys I would love to get some merit pls..  Embarrassed

And I would love to have 25 million BTC.  Cheesy I'd ask to strike up a deal, but I'm afraid you will never be able to raise the 25 million BTC.  Roll Eyes However, if the reason you want a merit is so you can wear a signature, you may buy a copper membership. It's very reasonable, and you don't have to beg.

maybe its for a HAT but i doubt that Roll Eyes

No, I want it for a lifetime supply of Ramen and I plan on living forever.

Maybe xhomerx10 should start making avatars on Ramen packets instead of hats, with the recent dumping.  Cheesy

LOLOLOLOL, ABC just added "deep reorg protection", probably in order to prevent potential SV attacks, but this instead makes it much easier to attack. This is the kind of naïve idea that you think of when you're first learning about Bitcoin; I've heard it suggested dozens of times since 2010. The geniuses behind BCH continue to astound.

Do you have sources? I'm interested in reading that

Here is the tweet. https://twitter.com/Bitcoin_ABC/status/1065041060101935104

The new poll is almost fucked already. This is like last November, just going in reverse.

I was living like a Saudi Prince back then after the bch fork. I was living the high life, now I’m eating pot noodle for my meal Cheesy

I never heard the term pot noodles. I suspect that you mean this:

I already eat Ramen daily for a snack. Now I'm going to have to have it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hope I don't end up getting a stoke or heart attack. I'm doing my best not to look at the BTC price every minute since this will compound the risk.  Cry
