Re: [FULL] ChipMixer Signature Campaign | 0.00075 BTC/post

The campaign is full at the moment. The spreadsheet seems to indicate an opening may be coming up. However, darkstar_ is taking a break for the holiday. Be patient. You'll get your chance to apply, eventually. Furthermore, I didn't realize "clothes" is a synonym of signature.  Cheesy

I'm jealous. Black forest cake is my absolute favorite. Oh well, since it is a virtual piece, I can enjoy it just as much as suchmoon.
1183  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Question on 51% attack on: December 23, 2018, 04:18:41 AM
<snip>
Thanks for the clearcut explaination.
So it got me thinking, Can't this kind of attack happen at the mining pool level? Let say a certain pool of miners has more than 51% of the mining power ( which usually is very likely with certain new blockchains) and they decided to carry out the attack or it just has to done by an individual miner who thinks his mining power is more than 51%?

Yes, it can be implemented by a pool of colluding miners. In fact it can be implemented by multiple colluding pools. The only problem with this is that humans are not the Borg. The more people you have involved in the conspiracy, the more likely it will be that someone diverges from the plan or becomes a rat. In order to properly implement a double spend, it must be done on the sly.  To quote from Ben Franklin, "Three can keep a secret if two of them are dead." Furthermore, the gang of thieves are going to somehow have to divvy up the bounty. I'm sure someone would end up getting royally screwed over.
1184  Economy / Reputation / Re: A boycott of replies to the recent extensive trolling by cryptohunter on: December 23, 2018, 04:10:48 AM
Unfortunately, I do not have the self discipline to ignore someone. I always end up peeking. However, I will vow to refrain from responding to this drama anymore, including handing out merits to anything related.
1185  Other / Meta / Re: About bitcointalk.org Registration system on: December 23, 2018, 04:01:15 AM
Then it shouldn't be a problem to get one's email and SMS verified if one is a legit user. It's not like the forum will display one's phone number for everyone to see.

The problem with SMS is that someone can port your phone number to a phone that they control. I know that many cell phone carriers are aware of this and now advise people to have a code that must be given to port a phone number. However, if someone gets access to this numerical code, you are as good as hacked.
If you do it via e-mail verification, the hacker simply needs to gain access to the e-mail and it's no good.
Using a 2FA program like Google Authenticator is a better option. Unfortunately, it is so good, that a person can end up locking themselves out of the account. In order to restore access, the administration would have to verify the person's ownership of the account to reset the 2FA.
1186  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Question on 51% attack on: December 23, 2018, 03:19:22 AM
To sum it up, if someone has more than 51% of the mining power, they can send coins to someone and receive goods/services/coins/fiat after getting enough confirmations. In the mean time, they can be working on an alternate chain and not release it to the network. On the alternate chain, the coins either remain unspent or are sent to someone else. Since the attacker has more hash than the rest of the network, eventually his alternate chain will be the chain with the most work. The attacker then releases their alternate chain, and the network switches to their chain because it has the most work. The original transaction disappears from the network. The attacker gets the goods/services/coins/fiat and the victim now has nothing.
On the bitcoin network, this kind of attack is very expensive to implement. The risk the attacker takes is that it would probably make the market value of BTC or whatever coin he is attacking much less. One could argue that the attacker could make a big short sell on the market to actually profit from this. However, the cost to do this is so prohibitively high,(for BTC at least) that I don't think the markets are currently liquid enough to actually guarantee a profit with this strategy.
1187  Other / Meta / Re: DT trust ABUSE by people here. Needs attention at once before goes out of hand on: December 22, 2018, 08:24:17 PM
I realize it is a natural inclination to defend yourselves; however, in this case it only results in more vitriol being spewed. I think many of the participants in this thread should take heed to the advise to not feed the trolls. However, if this obvious flame war is serving to invigorate you all, proceed.

1188  Other / Meta / Re: Report plagiarism (copy/pasting) here. Calling for Mod action: please permban on: December 22, 2018, 07:02:11 PM

Uhm, unfortunately better material would have to be found than this. All of these posts contain links to the original posts. This is not a case of plagiarism. Hate to defend this troll, but if someone wants to nail him, they will need to find better material. I'm sure the mods have already reviewed these posts, and cryptohunter is still around trolling everybody who dares contradict anything he posts. Thank goodness that he is not in charge. All the good posters would be permabanned and copy/paste spammers would be given merciful latitude.
1189  Other / Meta / Re: Alternatives to Permabans for plagarism on: December 22, 2018, 05:31:19 PM
I personally think permanently banning signatures from an account along with a temporary posting ban of 30 days should be implemented for plagiarism. By permanently banning the signature, you effectively make the account worthless for signature campaigns. This will combat the most common offenders of copy/paste spam: account farmers and sig campaign spammers. I also think a temporary ban of 30 days should be implemented as well. If an account farmer/sig spammer decides to move on immediately to post with their alts, if they get caught, then their alts can get permanently banned for ban evasion. I realize that linking alts together can be tricky; however, some of these copy/paste spammers make stupid mistake like using the same address to receive bounty payments.
1190  Other / Meta / Re: Multiple accounts plagiarized OP in Bitcoin discussion on: December 22, 2018, 04:43:36 AM
Yesterday, I also reported two of those, both posts created by different users. IMO there is nothing wrong with an occasional visit there. Just don't let the negativity infest your brain (use a gas mask like @The Pharmacist suggestion).

Yes, it was from all sorts of different user names. Obviously a poorly programmed bot. What was really funny was the copy/paste included the captions under the pictures, but no pictures.
I think that I'll try visiting the board again on a future date. I have many programs on my DVR that need to be watched.
1191  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: quantum computing & BTC on: December 22, 2018, 02:44:01 AM
Common misconceptions are that quantum computers will be the end of Bitcoin. That's untrue and the only thing quantum computers break is the ECDSA algorithm that Bitcoin currently uses. Please note that I said "currently" indicating that we could possibly change to a quantum resistant algorithm in the future which already exist and several products are already using such a algorithm. Ok so why haven't we changed yet? There's is no need to as quantum computers are far off from becoming a threat. I think the best quantum computer out there right now is 5 qbits and thousands qbits are needed to pose a threat to the algorthim. I'm planning on writing a thread which will go into a little more depth about this soon. Quantum computers are very effective at certain things such as exploiting rules in quantum mechanics that traditional computers cannot access. They are very good at soling specific mathimatical problems e.g factoring integers. However this doesn't mean that they are efficient in all areas.

Actually, a company called d-wave is selling 2000 qubit computers. However, the applications that it is good for would not be suitable for cracking algorithms. Also, the majority of the qubits have to be used for error correction due to quantum decoherence. There are other challenges with quantum computing as well. Also, the ECDSA can be changed, however; old coins sitting in "legacy" address may still be redeemable. If Satoshi never moves his coins, the ~ 1 million coins recovered could pose a problem. However, I doubt that quantum computing will become a reasonable threat in the near future. Maybe a few decades from now. This should give the BTC dev team plenty of time to come up with a solution.
1192  Other / Meta / Multiple accounts plagiarized OP in Bitcoin discussion on: December 21, 2018, 03:35:41 AM
I have been branching out to review posts in Bitcoin discussion lately. I just ran into multiple topics being opened with plagiarized content from this web page. I've reported like 6 posts already and have decided to give up and watch TV. All the thread opening posts copy word for word articles from this web page. Perhaps someone more diligent can either report or a mod can play wack a mole.

Edit: Judging from the crickets, this must be quite common in Bitcoin discussion. I wonder if I should give up perusing this board to hand out merits.
1193  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: BTC US tax calculation for 2018? on: December 21, 2018, 12:26:17 AM
What taxes? Does Bitcoin the legal currency or some real property rights in US? If not you have not to pay any taxes, I think.

In the US, the IRS considers cryptocurrency as property and every time you exchange your cryptocurrency for goods, fiat or another cryptocurrency, it is considered a taxable event.
1194  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: BTC US tax calculation for 2018? on: December 20, 2018, 03:16:27 AM

now for the bad news: the maximum capital loss you can deduct (as you'll see on line 21 of schedule D) is $3000. Undecided

Yes, that is bad news. However, if your capital loss exceeds $3000 in a year you can carry over the loss in the next tax year(s). (In the US.)

Maybe we will have a Christmas pump to go against the history. Time for rocket memes.

1196  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to add funds using a bitcoin atm receipt on: December 19, 2018, 06:32:42 AM
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with how to import the private key by scanning the QR code. However, there are many mobile wallets that have this feature
1197  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: How to add funds using a bitcoin atm receipt on: December 19, 2018, 05:52:37 AM
Does the receipt have a QR code? (If it does, do not share here, please.)
1198  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Advertising spam is not allowed on: December 18, 2018, 12:37:11 AM
Am I allowed to post a release thread for automatic masternode hosting service here?

You should post it in the Service Announcement(altcoins) child board. (Under the marketplace child board.)
1199  Other / Meta / Re: I want to see where is my mistake, Account go baned on: December 17, 2018, 05:35:11 AM
if this is really the "exact" query used, he could escape with  simply altering a single character.  Grin if not for plagiarism then he would still deserve to be banned for being that lazy.

Well, it's obviously a joke since I don't have access to forum's database. Although I wouldn't mind if theymos ran a query like that, but I digress.

For the actual tools I'm using single character is not a problem and even word-spinners can be defeated with some effort. In this particular case though I'm just amazed at the sheer stupidity of (a) copying posts in broad daylight and (b) asking how did they got caught.

"Officer, how did you figure out I was drunk? I was only swerving across three lanes and ran just a couple of red lights".

LOL, your post set me on an expedition to try and figure out how to scrape the Bitcointalk posting data base, and set it in an sql database. I didn't get very far. However, I did get to play around with one of Piggy's db with SQLight. Google really sucks as a plagiarism tool.  Undecided
1200  Other / Meta / Re: Forum is now Deleting Negative Posts - Imagine Reality if the Negative Stayed? on: December 17, 2018, 04:06:28 AM

1 second , you claim btctalk has no obligation to free speech, only censored speech their mods approve of,
the next second, you claim they can refuse because of the rights of the press.

You can't havay.

That e it both ways.

Are they a free venue to share ideas?
or
Are they a censored source of information?

FYI:
They can't be both.

Next thing that you will be spouting will be that the "ignore" feature is a gross infringement of people's freedom of speech.  Roll Eyes  People can blather on all they want. It does not entail an obligation on my part to read or listen. Want to post here? Please follow the rules or your content will be deleted and depending on the gravity of your offense, you will be banned from posting here.
