1401  Other / Off-topic / Re: Are scientific theories always fact? on: November 09, 2018, 04:12:16 AM
There is absolutely no way to verify every possible scenario in order to eliminate any potential opposition. Striving to verify that your data is correct within a certainty of 5 standard deviations is good enough in my opinion. Also, have you read the flat Earth thread? There is going to be some opposition no matter how sound the scientific theory is.  Cheesy
Furthermore, most scientific theories are reasonable approximations. Take Newton's laws of motion and gravity. Both special and general relativity are better theories and more accurate. However, using Newton's laws are good enough to calculate the trajectory of a rocket to a planet...

1402  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 13 Dead at mass shooting in California Bar on: November 09, 2018, 03:57:52 AM

It's much harder to kill with any other weapon that you could reasonably obtain (vehicle, knife, baseball bat, etc) and that's obvious from what's going on in other civilized countries that don't have a powerful gun lobby.

Even if removing guns is not feasible there are some tools that could be effective, such as required liability insurance. Wouldn't impact responsible gun owners whose premiums would be near zero, but could make it too expensive for nutjobs to own assault rifles. Might also help with other issues like straw purchases.

But even mild measures like that are unlikely for at least the next 10 years. It's unimaginable that any discussion on the topic would be possible in the current post-factual political climate.

I'm not certain making a law that will benefit the insurance industry racket is really a good idea. Sorry, but I don't want any bones thrown to those thieving scumbags.
1403  Economy / Reputation / Re: Who is this micgoossens?? on: November 08, 2018, 04:41:47 AM
I *really* never heard of him before - nor him me, based on his PMs.  Smiley

I guess this forum is a lot larger than we think!

You really should drop on by the Wall Observer thread. Then you can get acquainted with the hat club. Maybe you will even get a hat with your Peter Griffin avatar to wear with pride.  Cool  You can hang out there when you are need a respite from trying to convince idiots that the Earth is indeed an oblate spheroid.
1404  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 07, 2018, 01:08:29 AM

I've never understood how lefties can be bitcoiners. They seem mutually exclusive.

How? Disaffected democrats such as myself don't trust the government and don't trust big corporations, (ie banks.) Bitcoin is a perfect fit.
1405  Other / Meta / Re: [Unbanned] Unban account request on: November 06, 2018, 05:05:25 AM
Hello, I want to request to unbanned my account okane818. reason "Low quality post (15 days)" I don't understand.

It's self-explanatory. You're posting way too many low-quality posts, and that result in a temporary ban for 15 days. Improve your quality after the ban is over, and don't hijack other threads btw. This thread is way too old, you should make a new one.

Well, I suppose that Okane can make a new thread. However, there is already a thread made just about him.  Grin  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5050269.20
1406  Other / Meta / Re: Ban on: November 06, 2018, 03:40:39 AM
I have never received a temporary ban, I had no warnings. According to the forum rules, a permanent ban is given for a serious violation. I do not have such violations 100%. Why haven’t I still been unblocked and I can’t continue talking?!

Plagiarism is considered a serious violation. there are no warnings for a temporary ban. You are now permabanned.

PS: Please note that you are not allowed to create another account and resume posting except in meta about your ban. If you do so and get caught, that account will be banned for ban evasion.
1407  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Could a Quantum Computer derive a BIP32 seed from a public key? on: November 05, 2018, 04:25:00 AM
Well, that sucks. So I guess the only way to secure my xpub key for my Trezor is to only view my balance on an air-gapped computer, correct? Hopefully, they don't come up with an affordable way run and maintain a  quantum computer capable of breaking traditional algos anytime soon.
1408  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Could a Quantum Computer derive a BIP32 seed from a public key? on: November 05, 2018, 01:23:00 AM
Actually, since there are only 1024 possible words in BIP39/BIP32, it would be a much easier operation for the QC to just brute force the seed phrase than to try to work backwards from an exposed public key. However, if you use a passphrase on top of the mnemonic, this will probably confound the effort.
1409  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Could a Quantum Computer derive a BIP32 seed from a public key? on: November 05, 2018, 01:00:59 AM
What about Ledger hardware wallet addresses that use BIP49?

For example, these 4 addresses were derived from the same seed on a Ledger:

(1) 38yp4KEzHXuQzPqXosDrqR6k7m82vtTWN4 -> sent a transaction and exposed public key
(2) 3HdkVwrSuDcVhpcHRBfpxdyEWDgFhEo3T9
(3) 3GPmyepu9DpGYKMUgF4XV2kNhnWjZEEbJb
(4) 3D6Ka9zE1Ku2nu43h5YSET8M1tewm7AUGH

Could a QC use the exposed public key from (1) to compromise addresses (2), (3), and (4) ?

Assuming a QC is invented in the future that can break ECDSA.

Do you mean BIP39? Bip49 is what allows for segwit address to be embedded in a P2SH. Either way, the HMAC-SHA512 is used as the random function, and I really do not think it will be a trivial task, even for a QC that could break ECDSA.

1410  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Could a Quantum Computer derive a BIP32 seed from a public key? on: November 04, 2018, 11:52:29 PM
Bip 32 uses HMAC-SHA512 as the algorithm.  I think that it would be much easier for a quantum computer to attempt to crack an individual private key than to attempt to crack the BIP32 seed. Quite frankly, I think we are quite far off from quantum computers becoming powerful enough to make password/private key hacking trivial due to quantum decoherence.
1411  Other / Meta / Re: How recognized are you in the bitcointalk world? on: November 03, 2018, 11:43:35 PM
actualy how do you gain TRUST ? i consider myself to be trustful, (like not scamming or any crazy things.....) but how to gain it in the forum?
cause from day one its just 0-0 with me......

and i do like some positive GREEN on my trust Roll Eyes

I have my trust setting to level 4. So you have a green rating of 9 in my book.  Wink

I had to just stop it all together, and sought the support of AA for a few years. If you feel that you may have developed a physical dependency, (like having to drink everyday to avoid the shakes,) I would seek medical advice before attempting to stop or cut down.

How much does one need to drink daily to develop physical dependency? I guess it depends on the person, but still maybe you can give a reference?

I think I am in the same boat (no pun intended) than Ibian... completely functional, almost no effect (except the weight gain), but still an absurdly high amount of daily alcohol consumption since maaaaany years ago. I did switch from whisky+coke to beer and wine since I stopped smoking though. That was easy.

I did give a reference. Please see the part that I have now made in bold. If you stop drinking cold turkey and as a result, your hand develops a slight tremor, that's a good sign that you have developed a physical dependence.
1413  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 03, 2018, 08:17:03 PM
How do you guys deal with excessive drinking? I mean, I'm functional, but would still like to cut down.

1414  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 2018 USA Mid Terms! Red or Blue Waves?!? on: November 03, 2018, 06:29:49 PM
If the democrats don't take back the house, I am going to take efforts to persuade my partner to stop watching CNN, MSNBC and all of the political talk shows on Sunday morning. (I will probably fail.) I'm absolutely sick of these news outlets using polls to show a "win" is around the corner, and then the only polls that really matter (the vote) does the exact opposite. Quite frankly, I think a consultation with a magic eight ball is more reliable than these polls the mass media uses.

1415  Economy / Reputation / Re: why my account redtrust ? on: November 03, 2018, 05:41:59 PM
I don’t support the leaving of negative trust for these reasons. If the OP is evading a ban, he should get banned if the administration deems appropriate. Evading a ban doesn’t make someone a scammer, which is the purpose of negative ratings.

I haven’t looked into the OPs case at all, but I presume there is decent evidence that he is an alt of someone who is banned for plagiarism. Presumably there is also decent IP/fingerprint evidence to support this as well. Unless the OP has somehow contributed to some portion of the community, he should be banned.

The leaving of these kinds of negative ratings is essentially a soft ban and will likely result in the OPs account getting abandoned. These ratings also essentially cover up inaction by the administration on the issue. If there is evidence the OP is an alt of someone banned for plagiarism, then the fact the OP is not banned should be called out publicly and when enough of these instances are called out, the administration will be forced to make changes.

Well, until this account gets banned, I definitely do think a negative trust rating is appropriate. Many bounty/signature campaigns don't want people with negative trust ratings. Most of them definitely don't want participants who are potential alts of accounts that were banned for plagiarism. I do agree with you that the OP has the option of just abandoning this account and creating another. Perhaps, he will now learn how to cover his/her tracks better.
1416  Other / Meta / Re: Merits for posters not making redundant quotes. on: November 03, 2018, 04:07:15 PM
What annoys me is when I find pictures or codes in it

I admit it, I am guilty of over-quoting. However, I still like to retain the pictures at times. In that case I make it a habit to use the following code.
Code:
[img height=100]stupid.jpg[/img]

I agree that there is nothing more irritating than someone quoting an entire picture that takes up half the page.
1417  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: How does bitcoin store the utxo set? on: November 03, 2018, 03:56:04 PM

Okay thanks. This seems like something that could be easily optimised no? Instead of having a tonne of duplicated data that is both in the utxo db and blocks db. You could have each block, and each tx that tries to spend utxo's (instead of referencing a previous tx hash), references a block number and position in the block of the tx he is trying to spend. then the client finds the tx and position of the utxo inside the tx and checks the lockscript/unlockscript.

The chainstate database is the optimization. You can now run a pruned node that only stores a few hundred blocks and with chainstate you still have a fully validating node.

Not forgetting our resident fabulous gay man Bob

Your comment now makes me feel forgotten.  Cry  Perhaps I am not as out there as Bob, but I still think that I am fabulous.

1419  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: PoW vs PoS- Proof-of-Stake Might be the Winner here (Save the Environment) on: November 02, 2018, 05:42:52 AM
however due to the dormancy period No PoS coin holder has perpetual power over your transactions.

What "dormancy period" are you talking about? Are you talking about having to wait a certain amount of confirmations before your coins can stake again? All one needs to do is use coin control and split their transaction into several different addresses, and recombine them when and if a UTOX gets too small. You can basically maintain the same staking weight perpetually, using only one node. Those with the most coins will have their weight affected much less after each stake than the little guys who only have a few coins to split.
1420  Economy / Reputation / Re: Account Seller on: November 01, 2018, 02:02:15 PM
I think if admin make paid membership as you mentioned then account trade will decrease 95%. But in this case what will be the benefit? What will be the benefit by stopping account sales by the way you mentioned? traded account and paid membership can be used on same purpose.

If account sales dropped 95%, it will probably make quite a few account farmers stop. Many account farmers are also guilty of posting spam and plagiarized content in order to try and and rank up accounts.
