But this is a thread where liberals are condoning the murder of a guy because he had a history of behavior objectionable to them. And it's right out in the open.

Personally, it is clear that John Allen Chau was very devout and realized that he may be martyred. As the article linked in the OP reveals, he was clear that we should not be angry with the people he was trying to spread the message to.

Quote
“Please do not be angry at them or at God if I get killed,” he pleaded.

Now he is a martyr just like the God he is so devout to.

Quote
Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
Luke 23:34

We should respect the last wishes of this saint and not be mad at the people that killed him. It is the christian thing to do.
1262  Other / Meta / Re: I would like to recover my banned account please on: December 01, 2018, 01:58:00 PM

Yeah, it sucks. I really need my account back. I don´t like to start again with another alternative account. I hope the mods could give me a solution. Do you know if they see these threads?

Unfortunately, if you create another account it is considered ban evasion unless you only post in meta about your ban.

25. Ban evasion (using or creating accounts while one of your accounts is banned) is not allowed.[e]

Hopefully, someone can shed some light as to why your account was banned. I know that bumping a thread more than once a day can get you banned, but that is only a temporary ban. (Unless you are a repeat offender and have been banned several times before.) I believe your account was permanently banned.
1263  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Missionary killed by Primitive tribe in India on: December 01, 2018, 03:00:54 AM
Well, I read the Wikipedia article on these people for what it's worth. It appears that this missionary should have brought aluminum pots rather than fish. It is the only gift that these tribesman are known to have accepted. Also, not sure how this guy was supposed to communicate with these people when no other people on Earth appear to speak their language and the languages appears unrelated to any nearby languages. I'm also unsure why the fisherman that brought him there were informed to come back for him in two days. Did he really expect to effectively proselytize these people in two days? Or was he going to keep coming back and hope he can somehow learn their language through several trips?
Also, I am unsure why people on the right who would probably defend the castle doctrine seem to think these primitive people don't have the right to defend their property against invaders. It's abundantly clear this island is their property, no intruders allowed!
1264  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Where do you fall on the political compass? on: December 01, 2018, 01:46:33 AM

It appears that I am somewhere between "activism" and "left-libertarian." what ever that means. I'm just a tad bit left of center and a tad bit below center.
1265  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Scaling Solution Without Lightning Network... on: November 29, 2018, 04:25:28 AM
Asking people to compromise with a less secure solution just isn't acceptable. From what I can tell, the BTC network is the most secure by leaps and bounds over any other altcoin.

Hmm,
So what in your viewpoint makes BTC more secure than say LTC ?

For me, one is as safe as the other, but I would be interested to know your specific thoughts on the matter.

What has the higher chance of a "decentralized Bitcoin" on 2118. 1mb blocks or 32mb blocks?

You also act as if the spammer flooding the mempool can do it until 2118.

In 100 years, I think a toaster will probably be able to handle 32mb blocks. No detrimental effect on decentralization. Also, someone can attempt to "flood the mempool," now with ultra low fee and zero fee transactions. The only way to combat this is for nodes to set a minimum fee that they require for them towill accept and relay to other nodes. It has absolutely nothing to do with the capacity of the blocks.

Then what's the hurry? I believe Bitcoin will need to hard fork to bigger blocks later at any rate. If it gets consensus.

But Bitcoin Core will not bow to a group of people demanding bigger blocks now because reasons. It is politics, and some group of people will always want control. Remember "2X".

I'm not in a hurry. I just hope bitcoin core isn't thinking the scaling problem is solved with LN. They should be working on optimizations. It would be nice if they came up with a way that you could run a pruned node or a sharded node, and not have to devote a bunch of HD to the initial sync. Not sure why you can't prune as you go on the initial sync.
I also remember the 2x. When they were supposed to attempt the fork, it locked up. Obviously the software wasn't adequately vetted and tested.

I'm not asking. It is reality. Cool

By the way, what is your standpoint on Segwit and the Core developers' firm stance on smaller blocks?

I think it is interesting that you mention Segwit and smaller blocks when part of what Segwit did was introduced increased block capacity. Perhaps they will be able to do something similar with future improvements to BTC.

Then why aren't you happy? Cool

I'm not happy with LN for several reasons.
1) Requires you to be online at all times. Offline time=risk of funds. Online time=funds in hot wallet=risk of funds.
2) Hope your channel partner is online at all times in order to function optimally.
3) When making a transaction requiring hops, hope no one happens to disconnect or transfer funds along the hop, before your transaction completes. Otherwise, your funds are locked up for days.

4. If the working class earned their fair share, you would have more of the money going to more people and get more spending out of that portion of the population who still have a lot left to buy.

I actually think the old school way of workers forming unions and negotiated a deal with the "evil" capitalists gets a far better deal than government mandated minimum wages, etc. I also don't think government inspired wealth redistribution inspires healthy innovation. Many nouveau riche deserve to be rich and some of their contributions are so good, they should be able to ensure that their descendants get some advantages too.
The "old school way" is what they do in Europe.   Its a good compromise.  Government mandated minimum wages don't work because companies just hire less people or decrease working conditions some other way to compensate.

I would love to know how you think its ethical that entire generations of people should be able to live off of society's workers, consume at a high rate, and contribute nothing.

If the family is multiplying, the resources become diluted among the individuals. If they indeed are consuming at a high rate and contributing nothing, the resources are likely to be squandered in short order.
1269  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Scaling Solution Without Lightning Network... on: November 26, 2018, 06:34:37 AM

It "seemed" that way. But where are we now? The fees are as low as ever in satoshis/byte. You have to consider that Bitcoin is not Paypal. "Satoshi's vision" of a peer to peer digital cash cannot be achieved on-chain. It is not scalable.

You act as if that is set in stone. Like it can't be changed for any reason. If Bitcoin is still around in 2118, is it still going to be this way?

It is reality, and what the market has to offer until a solution is found. What the Core developers will not do is give way to a group of people who want a hard fork to bigger blocks, which will be problematic on its own.

Asking people to compromise with a less secure solution just isn't acceptable. From what I can tell, the BTC network is the most secure by leaps and bounds over any other altcoin.

As long as it should take if it has to work well for everyone.

Lightning nodes and channels are increasing. I believe there is more than $1.5 million of liquidity in Lightning, and growing.

So the Core team is going to stick to this plan, no matter what? I really doubt they are that inflexible if it appears they can't find an acceptable solution to people loosing coins.

@coins4commies Protip. Can you please learn to prune the quote pyramids a little? I'm sure that we will all get the context of what you are replying to, even with substantial pruning.
1271  Other / Meta / Re: Trust spam report + suggestion on: November 26, 2018, 04:53:28 AM
I don't think OP should worry about untrusted feedback. It will not reflect on your trust rating unless they become DT. However OP question is good, it will very difficult to moderate trust system. There is no easy way except investigation. Only admin could remove or delete left feedback so obviously he is busy too much. I don't think there is other way to report about left feedback except open thread on meta.

Yes, I wouldn't worry about untrusted feedback. This joker, Tanglemymind, gave me negative feedback for spreading a fictitious disease. His feedback to others was also dubious.  Cheesy

Edit: After actually examining the OPs situation, I can see were it presents more than a mild nuisance.
1272  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do people hate trumps wall.. on: November 26, 2018, 04:23:36 AM
You know, simply ending the drug war rather than erecting an expensive wall would probably do wonders in reducing this problem. Getting rid of the black market for drugs would make the dangerous drug cartels obsolete. Also, it would reduce people seeking asylum, for both the claims for needing asylum that are legitimate and the ones that are not legitimate. Plus, the government can use the now legitimized recreational drug policy as a new way to raise revenue. Seems to be working reasonably well here in Colorado with legalized Marijuana.

This is partly true. It would not impact the lucrative cocaine trade.

Assuming that the customers prefer the legal weed, if price and quality is good, this seems to improve things all around.

It's important to note that partial solutions to a large and complex reality should never be rejected. It was by a series of gradual relaxations and partial solutions that the West, notably Reagan, cracked open the Soviet block. And Nixon's starting a dialogue with China, that worked in a similar way. Trump and NK, etc. These are paths to a solution.

By the way, Legal is not a right/left issue today in the USA. You will find many on all sides of the political spectrum who would agree with legalization. That is why the trend toward legalization is succeeding.

The wall is a part of any solution and is a reasonable thing, assuming one gets out of the new progressive open border crap and thinks rationally.

When I call for the end to the drug war, I mean all drugs, not just weed. Personally, I feel that the governments' efforts to suppress the market just succeeded in creating a black market. The black market creates more problems than the reduction(?) in ready supply alleviates. And herding people up into prisons to serve long sentences does not seem to deter any replacements to come and fill the gap.

Us peasants need to risk a little more.

I'm literally just sitting here waiting for Bitcoin to crash on all of my friends for Christmas so I can buy back it. I feel dirty.

Maybe you should just try earning coin through the shitcoin bounties. The amount your earn will be small, but it's usually better than hitting all the faucets. Unless you pick some ICO that can't even get to an exchange so you can dump. Cool

Once you sold a largish chunk of bitcoin, it is difficult to buy it back, especially if you used the proceeds "to live".
Mining, maybe, but mining is close to being kaput (short term) at above 7c/kwh.

I've read a post of his in another thread. Yes 13 BTC is a good size chunk for him. However, he has plenty more. Even if he shuts down all his miners, (he may have already, I'm not certain on that fact.) He'll be fine BTC wise.
1276  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 26, 2018, 02:15:28 AM
Well, I sold 13

Do you plan to purchase back in in the $2k's? Asking for a friend..
Searing is a miner. He's always accumulating...

Looks to be about that time roach disappears, again.

You know you're in the scam-zone when instead of the rigged Bitfinex price coming down to match the legit exchanges, they try to rig the legit exchange price up to meet the fake Bitfinex price.

And yes, this extends to exchanges beyond crypto ones.
1279  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 25, 2018, 09:16:18 PM

No one also thinks this might spell months and months of bad news? We all now it's true, tethers printed out of thin air, propping up all kinds of prices. Tether and Bitfinex finally going belly up will cause some waves. It's a whale after all.

Crash it with the same Korea FUD

It's FUD? Genuine question.

Yes it’s FUD.  Follow the article links.  It cites The Information which cites Bloomberg.  It’s a circle of FUD.

Agreed.

The Justice Department and CFTC are coordinating their examinations, the people said.

Who the f*ck are "the people?"  Cheesy

Furthermore,

Some market participants have had doubts about Bitfinex actually having USD backing up their claims. The U.S. regulator CFTC subpoenaed Bitfinex to found out more.

Who are these market participants? What are their credentials? Lot's of weasel words if you ask me.

Edit: and here is the disclaimer in the Bloomberg article:
Quote
It couldn’t be determined whether government officials are solely investigating activity that occurred on Bitfinex or if exchange executives are suspected of illegal behavior. Neither the Justice Department nor the CFTC has accused anyone of wrongdoing, and authorities may ultimately conclude that nothing illicit occurred.

Only I am suspecting the account is alt of someone. This thread really is not belongs to meta (IMO), most likely supposed to be move on Help & Beginner. I don't think OP has knowledge about merit. But his question about merit source. OP just joined forum today and this is his first post. Wondering why his first post about merit source even he don't have knowledge about hoe work merit system.

I suspect the OP wants to keep his anonymity. Probably to avoid being pestered by merit beggars. Unfortunately, as time progresses, the OP will be outed because it will become apparent that he/she is awarding many more merits that his/her airdropped and earned merit would otherwise allow. (Unless the OP is a really popular poster and is racking up the merits.) I used to have this apprehension. However, I have only received a couple of PMs begging for merit. So it really isn't that big of a deal for me.
