Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the nation and the highest gun violence. This is no coincidence.

All this example demonstrates is that attempting to impose gun regulation on the municipal level is rather ineffective. All one needs to do to circumvent the law is purchase your gun at a gun shop outside of the city limits. The city of Chicago also shares a border with the State of Indiana... Gun regulation on the national level would be harder to circumvent. AFAIK, both Mexico and Canada have even stricter gun regulations than the USA ever will. Therefore, circumventing a federal regulation would require efforts greater than just crossing a border.
However, I do not see any serious federal regulation coming down the pipe until 2021 at the soonest. And since the Supreme Court justices have lifetime appointments, I suspect any meaningful legislation would be ruled unconstitutional.

1383  Economy / Reputation / Re: More Flying Hellfish Censorship on: November 11, 2018, 02:48:08 AM
Well to chime in, Flying Hellfish just deleted a couple posts of mine that strayed a bit off topic, now that I look at in retrospect. One of the posts basically had me calling Trump a bombastic asshole and hoping that he would rage quit. I noticed that he deleted a reply made by another leftist as well. So it appears that he is applying the rules consistently.

Amazing how the coverage of this tragedy seemed to disappear as soon as we found out the shooter was a liberal gun control nut.

This sort of thing doesn’t happen where I live. Everyone is allowed to carry guns on them here.

I'm glad that where you live there are great sharp shooters who can hit their intended target in a dark and crowded bar.  Roll Eyes

Huh? The people in the bar would shoot the target up close. Hence why this doesn’t happen where I live. Any shooter that walks into a bar where I’m having a drink with friends is going to have a bad time.

Wow, good guys with guns who are also drinking. What could possibly go wrong?  I guess drunk vigilante justice is better than drunk driving.  Cheesy
1385  Economy / Reputation / Re: Trust abuse! Injustice! Fake trust by winter! Much butthurt I am! on: November 11, 2018, 12:24:35 AM
At least you're doing research into the feedbacks Lauda left, which is something I don't have the time or (sometimes specialized) detective skills to do.  That's why I was against just duplicating Lauda's negs en masse and why I didn't step up to help.  Props to you and the others who did it the right way.

Have any of the DT2 members added Lauda to their trust list? Wouldn't that make Lauda level 3? I have my trust up to level 4, so her ratings would then appear as trusted by me.

1387  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Jim Acosta karate chops intern’s arm & loses White House press pass on: November 11, 2018, 12:11:01 AM
Government vs private industry.

Two entirely different things man.

If Alex Jones pay for his own platform, I don't give a shit what shit he spews from his corner. I won't do business with his entity either, based on just his views. If I remember right, Alex Jones violated contracts with Google and therefore lost privileged access. If I remember correctly, the violation was "harassment". Now, if you want to start setting internet rules, good luck dude.

I don't like government silencing media. That's dystopian.

I am not aware of the government issuing an injunction or indictment on CNN or any other news outlet. Since my partner is a news addict, I can still hear them shouting quite loudly 24/7; especially when they put together a panel of 12 lefties and one righty to issue their opinion. If the Trump administration is truly making a concerted effort to silence the media, they are failing miserably.  Cheesy
1388  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Jim Acosta karate chops intern’s arm & loses White House press pass on: November 10, 2018, 11:55:17 PM
Aha, if the secret service tackled him to the ground for refusing to give up a mic, we'd probably see an uproar from the left. Hell, the media already sides with Jim just because his speech was infridged, and that's literally the only thing protecting their jobs.

It's kinda sad to see the state of journalism in the United States;

https://rsf.org/en/ranking

Ranked 45 in freedom for "america, land of the free*"

* Only if you're rich.

Yet, many lefties cheer when the social media moguls censor someone from the right. (ie nutjob Alex Jones) Granted, private corporations are not obligated to grant free speech. However, aren't the lefties being somewhat hypocritical? What ever happened to "When they go low, we go high?" Or is Michelle Obama's strategy too complicit for us lefties now?
1389  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Jim Acosta karate chops intern’s arm & loses White House press pass on: November 10, 2018, 11:45:19 PM
Can you highlight an example of a previous president just demanding a reporter to be silent?

I can find things of places with dictatorships (turkey) silencing journalist, but nothing of America with a quick Google query.

I've seen people escorted out, but I haven't really seen presidents just "SHUT UP PERSON! STOP TALKING" from the USA.

Well, unfortunately the USA now has a petulant brat for a president, and ~40% or so give it their stamp of approval. At least the president didn't have the secret service tackle the guy to the ground and beat him up. After all, the intern the president had remove the microphone was really petite. It wasn't like a typical bar bouncing situation. If Jim feels that his 1st amendment rights have been infringed, then he should proceed to Federal court, ASAP, and settle this civilly. (If he hasn't already done so.)

1390  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Jim Acosta karate chops intern’s arm & loses White House press pass on: November 10, 2018, 10:21:11 PM
Meh, it was obvious that Jim was trying to bait the president(and succeeding to some extent.) There were other reporters waiting to ask questions too. He should have just handed over the mic when prompted to, with no resistance. There is always another day to get your f**ing "scoop."
1391  Other / Meta / Re: [Suggestion]To draw more attention to the rules! on: November 10, 2018, 09:56:57 PM
Not a bad suggestion at all, but the pessimist ghost that lives between my ears is telling me that our chronic shitposting/spamming/plagiarizing population is just going to ignore it, just like they fail to read everything else that might keep them from getting banned or put on ignore lists.

Judging by the way many of them post, they don't even read much of the other posts in the threads they are posting in. I'm not even certain if they even read and comprehend the posts that they proceed to plagiarize.  Cheesy

You do realize that the US are the only country in the world where this kind of things happen?
In other "rich" countries, we don't hear about mass shootings. Ever wondered why?
But yeah, the US is the land of freedom...and nutjobs.

Huh  That is not an entirely accurate statement. Mass shootings do happen in other "rich" countries, but with much less frequency. I mean according to this Wikipedia article, 3 have happened this year in Canada. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_massacres_in_Canada If you are not "hearing" about it, maybe you are not paying enough attention.

Only 2 actually, 1 of the ones in your link used a van, no firearms were used, the officer that responded was a real hero as he was able to apprehend the sick fuck without firing any shots.

Per capita mass shootings in the USA are way higher.  In order to compare the actual numbers you have to define "mass shooting" but firearm homicides are 8-10X higher per capita in the US than Canada and it's higher than that compared to a lot of other "westernized" countries.

There are hundreds of millions of people around the world that have look at the stats and concluded very quickly that military weapons in the hands of civilians leads to only one thing, less safety for the entire country...

I'm not denying that the USA is way higher. I'm just keeping it real by pointing out that mass shootings are not unheard of in other rich countries. I absolute despise it when people on the left or the right use blatant untruths and hyperbole to bolster their point. Quite frankly, CNN with all their stupid panels gets unwatchable much of the time. Not as unpalatable to me as Fox news, (I think my record for watching them is 5 minutes, if that long, except the Sunday morning show with Chris Wallace.) With CNN and MSNBC, I find myself rolling my eyes a good amount of the time.

1394  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [ESHOP launched] Trezor: Bitcoin hardware wallet on: November 10, 2018, 03:57:00 PM

But technically speaking, that's also insecure, right? I mean the only reason why Trezor didn't implement this is that they care about the user's funds safety so an alternative shouldn't even be suggested.

A little bit off topic question but does anyone knows what's happening? I mean who's on each side, Bitmain & Roger ver etc. I believe there will be two forks so which one is it are exchanges going to drop the name "BCH" and go with "Bitcoin ABC" (whatever the ticker name will be).

Bitcoin ABC is supported by Bitmain and Ver. Bitcoin SV is supported by Craig Wright and Calvin Ayre (coingeek.) The there will also be Cobra's fork. currently Bitcoin Unlimited supports the abc rule set but are working on making it compatible with Sv fork as well.

What time do you suggest we are going to use as this new "time?" UTC? That would mean in Japan, the new day would began in the morning. (about 9:00 am currently.) In New York, the new day would begin early in the evening. (7:00 pm standard time currently.) In Hawaii, the new day would begin in the early afternoon. (2:00 pm standard time currently.)  Also, if the world decides to pick UTC, wouldn't that be Eurocentrist?  Cheesy

1396  Other / Meta / Re: IS THE MERIT SYSTEM being used correctly by a small clique of individuals here on: November 10, 2018, 06:14:36 AM
From what I can tell, merit is very frequently given for posts that the merit sender agrees with. This is the circle jerking the OP is referring to. This will lead to new users mirroring the opinions of those in power. This diminishes the free flow of ideas and makes it more difficult to dissent from popular opinions. Even in this very thread, multiple posts have merit that fairly little effort was put into said post, but that the merit sender likely agreed with what the post said.

I also suspect that people send merit to those who are believed to have a lot of merit to send in the hopes of receiving merit in return. This results in merit sources having abnormal amounts of merit.

What the f**k are you talking about? I'm a merit source and I have only earned 156 merits, which is less than what you have earned. I hardly consider the amount of merit that I earned an "abnormal amount."  I only have 250 extra merit a month to give. I can't possibly hunt the whole forum and give merit to everyone who deserves it. I'm really getting sick and tired of people complaining on how we merit sources are doling out the merit. What on earth do you people want? We are trying to combat all of the shitty posting done by signature spammers and account farmers. Want to go back to the old way, where someone just has to post a couple of shitty posts a day to rank up? Furthermore, a person with very non-mainstream views, can rack up a bunch of merit. For example, Anunymint earned 127 merits in 40 days before he was nuked. If someone with unpopular views starts spouting off, they are going to attract fanboys. Especially if they know how to put together a good argument.

1397  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 2020 Democratic Nominee. on: November 10, 2018, 01:43:57 AM
Where do you stand as a democrat? Universal health care is pretty awesome, subsidizing education isn't a bad thing either.

There's some studies on economic growth, which is a good thing in my opinion; but I'd like to see the actual costs. I don't think handing schools more money really helps, I think there's programs to help young adults, but I'm curious to see more older adults go back to school for actual studying, not just societally bullshit. Like more hard science middle-age adults means more innovation in the aging workplace.

Tradition needs to change, and middle age adults are that link between "how things were" and "how things probably should be".

I do think that we're absolutely disproportionate "ruled" in a political system by old people. It sucks that the majority of people there are over the age of 60... do you really think 60+ year olds should be setting the rules?

I think if the government can run a program similar to Medicare, that would be good. This will include the option for people to enroll in an "advantage" program. (Medicare part C.) They can opt to have a private insurance company handle it for them and give them different benefits if they so desire.  The reason that I believe in some form of socialized medicine is because it will probably be a necessary cost for practically everyone. Furthermore, when the major consumers are the sick and the dying, it's hard to make a free market that is trying to eke out a profit. In the past, the churches used to run the hospitals as charity.
I think part of the problem with higher education is that the government is in the business of backing student loans. I'm not certain that I want the government to offer free higher education either. Not everyone wants or needs a higher education. I don't think we need to socialize that cost.
I really would like to see even more younger people involved in the Government. As long as they are qualified.

Sanders still isn't dead. He might have a running chance.  Roll Eyes

I don't want him to run. He isn't really a democrat. I really don't want to help pay for everyone's free college education.  Angry He's way too far to the left for me.
1399  Other / Off-topic / Re: What technology do you think we would need in the future? on: November 09, 2018, 05:03:20 AM

The one technology we need FAST is the ability to economically remove C02 from the atmosphere.  :/

No need for new technology. We just need to somehow restore our rainforests.

I'm not certain making a law that will benefit the insurance industry racket is really a good idea. Sorry, but I don't want any bones thrown to those thieving scumbags.

It doesn't have to be "industry", it could be a non-profit co-op running it but I can already hear screams of "socialism" if something like that is suggested.

AFAIK the NRA is "non-profit" too. Since they are the ones most devoted to the cause, are they the ones who aregoing to be running this mandated co-op? Furthermore, just because a group is non-profit doesn't make it immune from corruption. I really think a government mandated "non-profit" co-op would be ripe pickings for someone "benefactors" to line their pockets.
