I was very hopeful to witness some Kiwi collapse, with some wishful thinking followed by Bangbros collapse but bummer rain spoiled all the fun.

We were already losing 8-10 overs every day, considering the daylight drama in this series so rainy moments are not helping anyone. Hope the weather forecast is alright in the coming days, don't want to see a draw on a spicy pitch.

I don't understand how everyone starts talking about the quality of the pitch if the deck starts to spin and spinners start choking the batters.

I know you are not particularly focusing on the pitch but this narrative always pops up whenever spin dominating the match. It hardly happens when Seamer takes all the wickets or at worst, the team not picking any spinner or just 1 in the playing XI.

Both teams lost 15 wickets on the first day. Due to the loss of so many wickets, everyone is questioning the condition of the pitch. But I will say that we always know that Mirpur's pitch always helps the spinners. This is not a new phenomenon. And it will be their failure if they don't add experienced spinners to New Zealand's squad. But personally I like bowling friendly pitches in test matches. This makes the matches very competitive and exciting. It is very difficult to predict which team will win.
It's not like it happened the first time in cricket or only with a spin deck.

In my recent memory, i do remember Eng vs freaking Ireland match where both teams bundled up within a day and everyone was going gaga on the interweb that tests cricket at its finest but everyone takes a U-turn when spin does the damage.
563  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Test Cricket Prediction and Discussion Thread [self - mod] on: December 07, 2023, 02:56:44 AM
I can't imagine the condition of the pitch being so bad. I knew the pitch was bowling friendly. Bangladesh cannot bat well. Bangladesh's innings stopped at just 172 runs. But the performance of New Zealand's batsmen was worse. They lost 5 experienced batsmen to collect only 46 runs. And at the end of the day the team collected only 55 runs. Scoring 100 runs is now challenging for New Zealand. Miraz and Taijul are likely to start bowling today. As these two bowlers managed to perform well yesterday. New Zealand has a high chance of defeat in this match as well. Bangladesh made full use of their home advantage.

^^ It's high time that SENA countries also start focusing on turners in their backyard as well, that's the only way they could produce quality spinners who are disciplined enough on helpful decks and it will prepare their batters against spin, no drastic improvement in short term but they'll improve for sure. At least they won't look like a headless chicken when a ball is turning.
565  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: December 06, 2023, 07:26:41 PM
Indian Women's team still has a long way to go when they are up against SENA countries. Fitness is improving, but they still need more effort to match the opponent's intensity levels.

The way England went with their business despite being 2 down in the first over shows they are far ahead and a superior outfit, hope Indian girls surprise us in the next outing.

In T-20 he surely doesn't deserve the spot because there are plenty of good batters are available in the squad.

He was awful in the ODI World Cup but people forget that just before the WC, he was one of the top performing batters for the Proteas so you can't drop the inform batters. The quota system hardly matters when someone is performing.

On paper he looks strong in the ODI format. But on closer look, his stats are not as good as they seem to be. Out of 38 ODI matches he played, 7 are against either Ireland or Netherlands. Against India, his average is 34.40 and versus Pakistan it gets only slightly better at 35.25. Average against Bangladesh is 29.50. In short, he struggles against sub-continental teams. Even if he deserves a spot in the ODI squad, what makes him so special that he is selected as the captain? I haven't seen any extraordinary captaincy skills from him.
This is a valid argument but at the same time it's also true that he was in some fine form before ODI WC and had 3 tons/couple of 50s under his belt in just 10 matches and opponents were good.

I am no fan of Buvama the cricket or skipper but the current form does matter, extremely important for selectors and we should credit where it's due otherwise it would be a biased opinion or pure hate.

By the same logic, what would you call the Indian team?

They have been losing semis and finals (CT, 2 WTC, ODI) like it's a normal routine for them. Kiwis at least won the WTC finals, although I still have a reservation on their qualification for various reasons, but they still won it.

New Zealand won the 2019–2021 ICC World Test Championship Final. India once again lost out in the finals. But back then, New Zealand was the best test team. They had exceptional pace bowlers in their squad such as Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult, Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson. And the batting was boosted by Kane Williamson, Devon Conway, Ross Taylor and Tom Latham. But now they are a mere shadow of what they were once. Some of the players have retired, while others like Jamieson and Latham have gone out of form.
I liked that team but let's be honest.

They only qualified for the finals because of loopholes and not for their performances. They benefitted because some series got canceled and it includes their away series as well. They played 4 series (3 home -Won), (1 away-Whitewashed). Also Australia messed up with their over rates and fell marginally behind the Kiwis.

It's one thing to be included in squad because of color, but selecting captain due to same is just bad state of affairs, captaincy should be based on skills only.

There is photo circulating of him seen sleeping during wc team captain's meet-up, I was like c'mon make someone passionate your team's captain.

In my place there is a saying that there is no value for something that is acquired without any effort. The same is applicable with the case of Temba Bavuma. He got in to the team as a result of his race and became the captain for the same reason. That maybe the reason why he is not putting any effort into his game. Anyway, CSA just doesn't care. If they don't force all the good players to emigrate to other countries, then South Africa would be one of the top teams in international cricket. But they just doesn't bother.

@Sithara007 even after all these years CSA is selecting the team based on Color is simply sad to see because there’re so many talented player’s who would have helped them become number one team but they just don’t bother to change. Furthermore why doesn’t the ICC ever bother to intervene in this because isn’t this kinda political interference while selecting the squad?

They won the inaugural WTC against the Indians so they are not an unpredictable team per se but yeah, they are just bad against spin in red ball cricket, overall it's true for all SENA countries.
I am not agreed about this verdict about New Zealand because they are having problems in big games otherwise they are one of the most consistent team in cricketing world in last four world cups they never lost without reaching into semifinal which is amazing but in big games they are really chokers like South Africa specially in white ball format because in red ball they already beat India in WTC inaugural final which was impressive from them.
You guys justified whatever I stated perfectly if you think about it. New Zealand would have been a regular top ICC tournament winner like Australia if they stopped choking and were predictable.

However, that isn't the case. They won a major trophy like the WTC and lost ODI and T-20 World Cups by small margins which goes to show how unpredictable they truly are.

It's a dead rubber so doesn't matter if India wins or not but for Iyer it's an important match or may add Chahar into the same mix.

No ser, he gone back home for medical emergency.

Lol when did that happen? The dude was on the roster before the toss.
571  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: December 03, 2023, 02:24:33 PM
^^ Looks like a tough wicket to bat on, the ball was swinging and doing some magic at the start. Wish they had gone for such wickets at the start for more meme material and maybe to test new batting talents.

Hardly a surprise to me and very predictable news, I mentioned this multiple times when ICC announced its ICC events and also told during the Asia Cup that everyone should watch out for more drama during the Champions trophy.

It's just a trailer because we still have plenty of time in CT. Watch this space for more fun during the second quarter of 2024. Having said that, I guess we all know the final verdict lol.

BCCI was sharp enough not to announce about CT before the ODI World Cup and Pakistan had made the mistake of participating in odi world cup and now CT will also slip away from them. A win win situation of BCCI and total loss for PCB. Ramiz Raja was bold enough to take some stand but Sethi and Zaka are no more interested in taking stance on hosting rights.
It was an open book for everyone to read and PCB did right not to cancel their ODI WC. Rambo and everyone knew the realities but as usual, every PCB officials were playing for the gallery because you have to show some resistance in front of a domestic audience.

The truth is if someday PCB decides to boycott any ICC event, I can guarantee you they will go bankrupt.
573  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: T20 and T20I cricket prediction and discussion on: December 02, 2023, 06:47:55 PM
Australia and the cricketing world should remember that it wasn't some useless ICC event like the WTC finals or the ODI World Cup final.

It was the prestigious Paytm series and it's a pinnacle of the game of cricket. Hence the inspiring effort from The ICT team against the 2nd string opponents because they always bring their best in high-pressure and tough encounters.

Congrats team India!  Undecided Cry

That's quite some insult. Wink

Yeah, I understand that, but let's move on from that defeat and now focus on the T20 WC. As I said, India need to look out their bowling strategy a lot, especially grooming part-time bowlers.

Even in this series Jaiswal and Tilak Varma could have been tested with few overs, but they didn't do that is what become questionable and stuck with only bowling options when needed.
It was just for lols and giggles  Grin

~snip~

I know there are Politics in Indian cricket too. It's big mystery for me to understand why some of Indian star crickets was never included in the national team after a period of time.
Not following the context, do you mean former cricketer inclusion with the team selection committee or BCCI setup or what?

Actually, it was without any context. I never noticed if Mahi had retired from any format of cricket yet. I didn't see him in any squad for a while but he was performing in IPL. The same thing applies to Yusuf Pathan, Irfan Pathan, and Sehwag too. Was they out of form when they were kicked out of the squad? Or does BCCI just want to try younger players?

These things do not get noticed because India has a big line of talented players which is the reason people do not miss experienced campaigners like Mahi! But, Bangladeshi fans still miss Tamim Iqbal.
Normally Indian players don't announce their retirements publicly or early despite getting clear mszs from the selectors due to their deals with ad agencies as it could hurt brands a bit. One of the reasons many cricketers delay their official retirements. Management does move on and reasons could vary from case to case but it's up to players if they want to announce or not. Even the likes of Kaif, Raina publicly announced their retirement quite late.

If I am not wrong then Dhoni did announce his retirement from tests in 2014-15 and in white ball cricket official retirement came around 2020.

There are unconfirmed news coming in that India won't be going to Pakistan for ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the event will likely to be played in Dubai.
India refused to travel to Pakistan for Asia Cup but didn't said anything about icc Champions Trophy till the time they hosted ODI world cup. Now ODI world cup is over and its right time for bcci to gave there verdict on icc champions trophy. Big blow for PCB.

Would you say the same thing if any sub continent team seems to be losing in SENA condition?

Discussion would be around how sub continent teams can't compete in seam-bouncy wickets and not just cricket pundits but fans too. IMO everyone should give credit to Bangladesh and accept the fact that they played good cricket and superior team in spin conditions against a big team like New Zealand.
These tours help underdogs like Bangladesh quite a bit which is good for their fans and cricket on the whole even though they don't attract many viewers outside Bangladesh. It was a proper test match if you ask me.

I didn't expect them to bounce back so nicely and I am expecting them to whitewash the Kiwis at this rate.
They have been around for some time that's why I believe they lost the tag of the underdog. It was their first home test win against the Kiwis, plus NZ visited Bangladesh after 14-15 years so it was a special win.

New Zealand is a very, very unpredictable team across all formats. For example, they looked like they might win the ODI World Cup at one point, but ended up losing in the semis without even reaching the final.

On the other hand, Bangladesh need more players like Taijul Islam to help improve their performance across all formats.
They won the inaugural WTC against the Indians so they are not an unpredictable team per se but yeah, they are just bad against spin in red ball cricket, overall it's true for all SENA countries.

In the wider cricketing world, there is hardly any relevance for this series. New Zealand is once again performing poorly in sub-continental conditions, and Bangladesh doesn't gain anything by winning matches under helpful conditions. Matches like this one are the reason why test cricket is dying. And it's not like star players are not participating. In this match they had players such as Kane Williamson and Tim Southee taking part. But in the end, the outcome is as per expected lines and the only time when this match looked exciting for me was when Williamson scored the century.

Any punter going with the live betting? Just tuned in so hardly aware of the conditions.

It seems script writers are hell bent on 2-2 followed by series decider and trying to make some money out of this useless series. 2 back to back umpire calls going in favor of batter does suggest that script writers are working hard for it.  Grin

At this very moment, i'd very much prefer role-based captaincy in every format so won't mind 3 different captains for all 3 formats.
Indian squad for the South African tour. I was thinking about spilt captaincy in each format and they are heading in the same direction. Although i believe atm it's a monkey balancing act as far as the White ball (T-20/ODI) format is concerned. SKY is just a temp skipper because Pandaya ( or a senior player like Rohit) is not there and it also indicates that they are not looking at Iyer as an option for T-20 skipper, despite him being in the squad.

For ODI they went with KL, IMO it would be too early to make any assumption about it as ODI is not relevant right now. Test captaincy was obvious so not a brainer.

I would have rather preferred Shreyas Iyer as the ODI captain, but they chose KL Rahul instead. I am following Rahul's performance for the past several years, and he has failed at both international level and in IPL. Ideally Shreyas or some of the other promising players such as Hardick, Ishan or Shubman could have been given the chance, but the selectors don't want to do that. Also, congratulations to Sanju Samson. He got included in the ODI squad. At least now his rabid fans would stop booing the Indian team whenever they play in Kerala.
I think we shouldn't mix the format if we are discussing or analyzing any player be it a bowler or batter.

In ODI he's performing consistently. In the Test not consistent but made a wonderful ton in the last South African tour, hence in the test squad. As far as T-20 is concerned, he's just bad and shouldn't be in 15 men's squad, maybe keep him in the 18-20 men's squad, that's it. So overall it's a mixed bag.

Regarding captaincy debate

At this very moment, i'd very much prefer role-based captaincy in every format so won't mind 3 different captains for all 3 formats. Virat and Rohit have already set the formula for ODI and Test formats. In this WC everyone had their set roles in every slot and it almost paid off. We already know what Virat's lead test team did in the last 6-7 years, results are there for everyone to see.

Pant's spot is not fixed in the T-20 Playing XI or in some cases squad. There is so much competition for middle-order (now top order too) WK batsman who can play the finisher role so IMO he's not a strong candidate in the T-20, and the same with the ODI format if KL and Kishan are in good nick.

KL could possibly fit the captaincy role in test and ODI if he gives up his dream of becoming an opener (That's where (Top-3) everyone wants to bat because it's glamorous and a marketable spot in terms of money and deals). He should bat in the middle order (similar to the last ODI WC) and must work on his Keeping. As far as T-20 goes, as an opening/middle order batter, his spot is also not secured in the playing XI. The point is for his survival he needs to become a WK batter. Also, he's too depressed to lead the team in T-20 (maybe ODI too), you need attacking cricket in a short format.

Pandaya actually did a satisfactory job in his T-20I captaincy gig, if he's fit then he should get a long rope. Shreyas has a perfect attitude for captaincy but his fitness is shaky due to back injuries so it's a tricky situation as you don't want your captain to break down in mid series.

Or maybe keep playing dumb charades in T-20 for a couple of months and when the WC comes, hand over the captaincy to Rohit, it won't be a bad idea as T-20 WC is around the corner.
