8121  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Online or Desktop Wallet? on: October 21, 2014, 01:30:15 AM
I'm new into crypto currency and was wondering which wallet I should use in terms of security.

I prefer desktop wallet then online, but make sure you have some anti-virus and scan if it has trojan...
Anti Virus does not guarantee that you do not get infected by trojan or other virus. There are plenty of fully undetectable viruses which means they cannot be detected. The best method is to verify and build the wallet yourself from source, I wouldn't download the wallet if its not open sourced.

Hmm, this one caught my attention as I am using just free anti-virus and this would mean I only have limited protection. Now, would this require some programming knowledge? OMG, I hate being a noob but not even sure what open source is.
Open sourced means they allow you to view all the code and ensure that they don't include viruses or wallet stealer. If you don't install anything suspicious, you are fine. It is recommended to change your OS to ubuntu or any other Linux OS. Linux have less known viruses than Windows.

Lots of people vote for bitcoin core but it takes a lot of space, don't it?

I am playing with electrum now, it seems cool and not too advanced. I read somewhere on the forum that someone lost like 1.5 BTC in just fee, and it was a human misstake. Not the wallets fault.

So my question is, can I be safe by only using electrum and back it up? Is it the default_wallet file?

I also downloaded bitcoin core just to test it out, and I guess that one is downloading the entire blockchain but what does that mean exactly?

I am a bit new to the offline wallets, thats why. Thanks for all replies.
If you only need the wallet, you don't have to download the blockchain. Just export your wallet.dat and you are good to go. If you are looking to send and get balance, only then you have to download the blockchain. Otherwise, addresses are created without the need of internet connection.
8123  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Just a bit curious on: October 20, 2014, 01:16:13 PM
I am currently using blockchain info

I just want to ask, is there any possibility that blockchain will cease its operation? What will happen to my btc with them?

If you have the private key you control the money. Bitcoin does not depend on blockchain.info but to control your money you need the private key.
In such situation you could upload your private key into a desktop wallet.

They have the keys too.

They might transfer your coins before you do
They DO NOT have the unencrypted version of the private key. To spend the Bitcoins, you need a unencrypted version of the private key. In this case, blockchain.info only have a encrypted backup of your address which means they cannot spend your Bitcoin as they do not log passwords on the server.

8125  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Unconfirmed transaction almost 18h :( on: October 20, 2014, 01:11:33 PM
Hey guys, i made a transaction yesterday :
https://blockchain.info/tx/b7255d5034cf0b2a8b51d7634f5d49f73c6ca74c9c4a98fe901b5ba2cfbe8adb

Unfortunately ... i delibeteraly forgot to add miners fee and now it's almost been 18h and still no confirmation.

My question is : anyways I can add miners fee right now to speed things up to help it spread in the network?

And when I look at the network propagation tab in https://blockchain.info/inv/b7255d5034cf0b2a8b51d7634f5d49f73c6ca74c9c4a98fe901b5ba2cfbe8adb
i noticed there was a Nod yesterday that had picked it up but today there's no information available, could something be wrong with the
transaction?

Thanks for your help,
Max
No, you cannot modify a transaction that is already broadcasted but you still can doublespend it although it may be difficult. Most node refused to relay your transaction as your transaction does not include a standard fee and the coin age of the 0.1BTC is very low which brings down the priority of the confirmation. The node probably stopped relaying your transaction as other nodes are not willing to accept and relay your transaction.
8126  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Which offline wallet do you use, and why? on: October 20, 2014, 01:04:46 PM
I use Bitaddress.org as my offline wallet. It is opensourced and pretty easy to use and generate. Paper wallets tend to be much more durable than those stored on electronic devices.
8127  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: unconfirmed transactions on: October 20, 2014, 01:00:33 PM
Oh there you go the transaction has been dropped https://blockchain.info/en/tx/f24ff339fc651b0b28cdfc0e67bb4c2f91b46cbd39935ff4d70c95bb5c33b0e9 it says "Transaction not found" I recommend you to resend the coins now with a fee as some nodes might rebroadcast it(it happened once with me transaction got dropped and I decided to not resend it next day it was rebroadcast even though I have never opened my client)
It appears to be rebroadcasted again. Even if you don't open the client but the client behaviour is to rebroadcast after the transaction falls out of the mempool, it will still automatically broadcast. In this case, even though no node is relaying it right now due to its low fee (https://blockchain.info/inv/f24ff339fc651b0b28cdfc0e67bb4c2f91b46cbd39935ff4d70c95bb5c33b0e9) the transaction appeared to have been stored in Blockchain.info's mempool again. The only way now is to either doublespend it or just wait for it to confirm, it will confirm eventually but it takes a long time.
8128  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Dumb Question..... on: October 20, 2014, 12:51:06 PM
You must back up your wallet. You can import it on multibit wallet if blockchain ceases to exist or have some service interruption.

What if I did not backed up my wallet? What if that BTC is gone, where can I go or who can I contact?
If you are talking about blockchain.info wallet, I believe they would still send you a backup if they cease to exist. Just contact Blockchain.info support, I'm sure they will help you. They also send you email backups in json format from time to time.  At http://blockchain-status.com/, the server says that if the server gets compromised, they would send you a email backup. I believe it would be the same for a shutdown.

If you are talking about desktop wallet, you can't get your BTC back. To spend your BTC, you need a private key of the address or the coins inside the address cannot be moved. No one else except the person with the private key can transfer the coins in the address.
8129  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Sync error on: October 19, 2014, 11:45:32 AM
quad core, 4 gig's of mem, xp sp3 x86 using a fresh format with nothing else installed.

Your ram should be more than enough to support Bitcoin core. Does your CPU support 64bits? If so, install 64bit version and upgrade to windows 7. Could you post your log file?
8130  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: unconfirmed transactions on: October 19, 2014, 11:26:54 AM
You just have to wait. It'll get confirmed in due time. Always best to include a fee to keep things moving along.

What happens if a node continuously pumps dust into the blockchain?  Like a server farm of 100s of PCs that do nothing but pump dust into the BTC blockchain, in an attempt to cripple it like a DOS attack?  Does that node get somehow cut off?

It would cost a lot in fees and coins. In order for it to be sucessful, the nodes must accept it. Nearly all of the node refuse to relay dust transaction if the fee is too low. Most of the node and mining pool are designed to reject these kind of dust transactions. There are however, still a few mining pool willing to include dust transaction.
8131  Other / Meta / Re: Why do members here have so few posts? One theory on: October 19, 2014, 06:17:02 AM

Activity limit increases by 14 every two weeks. My current activity limit is 168. I have been active for around 24 weeks already. You seem to be confused about the activity. Activity can only be increased if you are active for 2 weeks. My post count is currently 1126, a few months ago I posted around 14 per day and stopped recently (1 month ago).

I see.  So activity would increase by 14 if you posted every day for two weeks?  OK. And indeed i confused post count with activity.  Let me see if I can find my post count.

Name:    TonyT
Posts:    129
Activity:    124
Position:    Full Member

Wow, I have not posted as much as I thought, "only" 129 posts!  Good, good, like an SSD drive with read/writes, I still have more posts to go before somebody deems my posts excessive and bans me? ;-(

BTW, I think I know why excessive posts is considered bad by some people:  apparently people use this forum for 'business related' bitcoin transactions, and the theory is that if you are a hero or legendary member, you are considered by newbies as 'trustworthy' (I don't think smart newbies would make that conclusion, but that's another point).  So the moderators don't want somebody just posting a lot to get a high Activity / Posts count.

At the end of two week period, post one post and your activity limit will increase by 14 at the end of the new two week period. To fully utilize the activity, post an additional 13 post to "redeem" all of the activity.
8132  Other / Meta / Re: Why do members here have so few posts? One theory on: October 19, 2014, 05:59:46 AM

Posting 14 times per day is reasonable right..? My posting frequency was 14 per day for a few month until I got pretty busy and can't post that much. I spend more time lurking around the forum now.

But you have, says your profile to the left of this post, "168" "activity".  So if you posted 14 times a day, that would mean in 168/14 = 12 days you would get to 168.  That's not "for a few month".  This is what is confusing me.

8133  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How does sig campaigns work exactly? on: October 19, 2014, 05:10:30 AM
???hi everybody i am here with yet another one of my newbies questions. Huh
i thank you all for responding to me  Roll Eyes

well whenever someone asks how to get some BTC there is this common answer to joins some sig. camp.
so How exactly does signature campaigns work?
you just put the link they give you inside you sig. area and do your usual postings?
or
you have to post about them, i mean like advertising?

Put advertiser signature code into your signature space,
then you're ready to advertise them.

Usual postings must not be like this :
"i agree",
"lol",
"nice one",
"I like your style",
and many more

If you do, then you probally will not get paid or probally got ban

just becareful  Wink

Is a post with one line but made sense acceptable in a sig campaign?
Definition of constructive post is anything that contributes to the topic being discussed and providing new opinions or points. If your post is one line but have information or contribution to the topic, yes it is acceptable. Just do not spam the forum by saying '+1', 'I agree', 'bump' or 'LOL'. They are considered not constructive. As much as possible, give as much point and contribute as much as possible to the topic.
8134  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Online or Desktop Wallet? on: October 19, 2014, 05:06:08 AM
yeah, blockchain.info is more secure. Smiley

But you are still putting your money on someone else's wallet. The risk is there..
Blockchain.info wallet is NOT a shared wallet. That means, no one else have control to your wallet except you. The server have no decryption key, if you forget your password and don't have the passphrase for password recovery, your BTC is gone since they have no access to your wallet.
8135  Other / Meta / Re: Why do members here have so few posts? One theory on: October 19, 2014, 02:31:15 AM
How have you been here only a week but your account was created in March 2013? It sounds a lot like you purchased your account.

Why would anybody purchase an account?  I guess to step into the shoes of somebody... maybe to get Hero or Legend status?  What does it take to become a hero or legend?  Time or number of posts?

Hero and legendary member generally means you are here for a long time and may have more experience and trust. To be a Hero member, you need to post at least 400++ post and be active for every two week period for 1-1.5 years. To be a legendary member, you need to be active longer than that.

Posting 14 times per day is reasonable right..? My posting frequency was 14 per day for a few month until I got pretty busy and can't post that much. I spend more time lurking around the forum now.
8136  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Am I wasting my time.... on: October 19, 2014, 02:15:52 AM
Definitely, not only you are wasting your time, you are also wasting your money. Mining is a game for bigger companies with big datacenters, efficient ASIC, cheap electricity rates. If you are looking to mine to understand Bitcoin, sell those and get a USB block erupter and buy bitcoins with the remaining money. They are slow but they can still allow you to learn more about Bitcoin.
8137  Economy / Gambling / Re: Primedice | The Most Popular Bitcoin Game! |1% Edge | PVP | Active Chat | Faucet on: October 18, 2014, 02:23:34 PM
My captchas are so hard, and i'm sure they switch the pool depends of where is your ip from. Because few days ago i send some screen to a friend with my imposible captchas and he do the same and his capcha was soo ez... (I'm from argentina and my friend spain)

I believe it is based on your IP. I have tried using Tor before and even though I was entering the correct captcha, it keeps on getting rejected. If you are using dynamic IP, your IP may have been blacklisted, therefore giving your hard captcha. It is just my guess.
8138  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Blocks are still taking way too long. on: October 18, 2014, 08:11:10 AM
Over 30 minutes for a single confirmation does not (and will not ever) work in the real world.
(Almost) Every time I start to believe that BTC is "going mainstream", I have a delay waiting for a 30+ minute block....  Shocked

still fortunately you only 30 minutes, I was almost 1 hour more because my connection is only 20KBps. moreover offline wallet so many blocks
I don't think confirmation relies on connection speed. Transaction is broadcasted to the network almost instantaneously regardless of connection speed, of cause, slower connection speed may have delays but it isn't much. I think you are talking about syncing of blocks. It is also dependent on connection speed of your peers.
8139  Other / Off-topic / Re: Iphone or Samsung on: October 18, 2014, 07:28:00 AM
Android gets my vote, but if your primary use is gaming I think iOS is still ahead of Android in that department.
I don't think so. Androids have far more game library and is more open for normal users as they don't have to jailbreak to install their own apps. Also, Android phones typically have much more ram space and new features. IPhone just change the CPU, screen size and OS for most of their new phone. Android have more competition between different brands. They have far more new features per new release of flag ship device. I personally prefer HTC  more due to their durability and build quality. You don't see much premium real metal feels with good camera. Samsung wins my votes in this comparison.

Oh , now I understand much better . & what's the RPC Feature please ?
It is basically a command line which allows you to connect do a lot of things, for example sending balance and checking balance, check node status etc. You just need to set Username and password on the configuration file in the directory and you can implement into your script. This is useful for developers which operates a online service and needs instant withdrawals, once a user initiates it, the script can send a command and the coins will be sent instantly. Here's more details :https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/API_reference_(JSON-RPC)
