Besides using strong passwords and keep them safely backups online or off-line (should be off-line backups), checking potential threats before installing anything in your devices is essential to protect and keep your accounts safe.
I created a topic on this issue:
[Guide] Virustotal scan guideline to detect viruses, trojans, malwares, worms
8242  Other / Meta / Re: [Proposal] Enhance the requirements for ranking up to Member position on: February 27, 2019, 03:18:06 AM
Those first two are good to wipe out all shitposters and don't allow them chances to move up to Member rank.
5 merit for jr member, 20 for member

I don't agree.
Those three requirements, if accepted and implemented by theymos, will create a new generation of shitty Full Members, Senior Members, and above.
I have a hypothesis that if those new requirements implemented, we will see a new abusement wave like that happened with Junior Members Demotion last year.  Roll Eyes

50 for full member, 100 for sr member, and 250 for legendary.

I like the gap, that makes a lot of sense for the forum.

anything above it the gap is HUGE!

GUIDELINE TO USE VIRUSTOTAL.COM TO SECURE YOUR ASSETS FOR FREE

Notes:
- Please remember that this one is a free online service, it should be used only as substitution of professional antivirus or internet security softwares for someone who don't have those softwares on their devices (lack of money, or anything else).
- You all should protect yourself better by spending money to own antivirus or internet security softwares on your devices.
- It is very cost-effective investment for your assets.
- If anyone has intention to translate the topic into your local language, please feel free to do this. I always want to spread helpful things out, especially from my original contributions. Please make sure that you make high quality translation, not shit one from Google Translator.
- Having and maintaining healthy habits and behaviours on Internet space are the best way to protect your devices and your assets.
Because antivirus softwares or internet security softwares only help us from well-known threats. @Pmalek mentioned about it there:

Unfortunately Virustotal can only help you with already known threats and viruses by comparing the code to known threats. If you are unlucky and download a file that contains a fresh code with a virus then Virustotal will not be able to help you since it is the first time they see the code. The results can come back as clean while in fact you get infected and if you do a 2nd scan in a few days you see that some antivirus engines are already registering the file as a threat.
bob123's suggestion (click on quote link to see full post):
Using AV's (whether paid ones on your computer, or online services like virustotal) does only protect you against 1) known and very wide-spread malware and 2) malware created by script-kiddies or any other non-commercial cyber criminals.

Objectives:

(1) Using the online platform to detect viruses, trojans, worms, malwares before downloading and installing unknown sources;
(2) Securing your computers and all kind of assets, including digital assets, for free.

History
Virustotal.com is the online free service that has a long history.
The platform started in late of 2011, you can visit its blogsite for more information.
Years from its beginning, the virustotal.com has been widely used by lots of people, mainly because it is totally free to use, and its power to detect potential threats.
It is more helpful for crypto enthusiasts who usually work online and have to download, install new wallets from new crypto projects.
Please remember that you all should check the security and potential threats inside unknown sources before doing anything else (downloading, installing, etc.)

Steps to use virustotal.com

(1) Visiting the site
The site is available there: https://www.virustotal.com/en/

(2)Checking potential threats
There are two strategies you can use to check potential threats
As you can see in the below attached image, you can check threats via files or URLs.
I will take GINcoin wallet and URL of its wallet as a case study here

2.1. Checking URLs
First, make sure that you already choose the URL tab, before doing the next step
Second, copying and pasting the URLs that you want to check potential threats, like the below image
Lastly, clicking on the scan button, wait a little bit to get resutls.
Results:
Detection ratio is 0/69.
No threat found, and the URL is safe.

2.2. Checking FILEs
After downloading GINcoin wallet from GINcoin's website (official source from the project), before installing the wallet, let's check it with virustotal.com.
First, make sure that you choose the FILE tab before doing the second step.
Second, clicking on the choose button, then add the link to directory where you download and store it.
Lastly, clicking on the scan button, waiting for a while to get results
In the meantime, you will see the following interface
Results:
When the scanning process finished, you will see results like the below image
For GINcoin wallet, detection ratio is 0/69, it means no threat (only for well-known threats, thanks @Velkro) found, and the wallet is safely to install on your devices.

Both of the ways show that GINcoin wallet for windows is safe to download, and install.

It should be better if you do both steps in order:
1) Checking URLs.
If the results from URLs-checking are good, clean, no threat detected, you should continue with the second step.
If If the results from URLs-checking show threats detected, you should stop immediately. There is no reason to continue with the second step or downloading/ installing files from the URLs.
2) Checking files after the URLs-checking results shown no threat detected.

Of course, you can ignore the first step, and jump directly into the second step. It's personal approach, but I would like to do both two steps in order.

3) You should create your free account to have additional functions (for free).

4) You can also download files from Github (published by young age accounts and new born projects), and scan all files before actually think of using them to install on your devices (if they are safely). Please remember to be cautious with newborn projects, and Github published by young-aged accounts (and you don't have proofs of their past projects).
Additionally, there are tips to check Github account's reliabilty first (such as account age, activity, past reputation) before thinking of downloading sources from Github.

What does self-made mean?

Isn't every profile self - made?
To be honest, I don't know the origin of self-made term in the forum.
For me, I inspired by LoyceV and his personal texts.
I started to use the term and also setup my personal texts with 'self-made' Full Member, then Senior Member.

You raised a big question, Vod.
How about the idea to add the term 'self-made' into bitcointalk dictionary?
or the topic Terminology (by yogi)

Another funny term, such as 'merit-made' should be taken into consideration as well.
 Grin
8248  Other / Meta / Re: New collection of badges for self-made users on: February 25, 2019, 01:42:14 AM
Why did I make silver badges?
Simply because we currently have badges with gold color.
As you can see that the badges are tiny, so how did we can differentiate between new and old badges if they all have yellow color?
Of course, silver maybe not a perfect color for new badges, but for now I don't have idea to choose other colors.
The idea could be interesting but.. silver?
As a self-made Full member and potential self-made snr  member, I also don't get why you would give silver (inferior precious metal) to Self-made members and gold to airdrop receivers.

Sounds great!
It is a kind of demotion, but demotions on badges, not ranks.
The idea is simple. Instead of deleting those *airdropped merits*, it is better to replace the gold coins/badges with the account to silver coins, and then turn them into gold when you get the number assigned to each rank.

Users who earn more than 1000 merits are oustanding ones.
They obviously deserve to have special badge for their great initiatives and massive consecutive contributions to the forum.
I known that there are topics discussed about this issue.
One more thing, if the one got acceptance by theymos, the requirements for the outstanding guys should subtract automatically allocated merits to merit soures.
Only self-earned merits should taken into account as criteria to give them the outstanding badge.
If a change of badge was to be implemented then I suggest, it should be change of badges based on merit received instead of ranks, that way a legendary member only gets the badge when user received 1000merit. It can still be seen as a self made (ranked up member)

therefore would simply be to either remove the airdropped merits, or have them start to decay slowly over time.
That's exactly what I expected other demotions that aim at higher rank members.
By now, the forum has only one demotion wave after merit system's beginning, aim at Junior Members in September last year.
If other demotions aim at Full Members, Senior Members, Heroes, and Ledgendaries implemented, I am sure that we will witness others sudden rises of merit circulations, like what happened in Sep. 2018 or in Jan. 2019 with Default Trust Change.
8251  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: February 24, 2019, 02:00:31 PM
that's a long journey for crypto what you are talking about. looks like bull run is near beacuse BTC crossed 4000$ and eth price is also upto 160$
2000$ of eth is huge and need billions dollars in the market cap. i have no idea that will happens or not but one thing is clear that crypto is rising. thumbs up!!!
That sort of high price will not be reached in near future.
It takes years before Ethereum can hit $2000.
Of course, I hope that ETH will do it, even years later.

I gone a long journey from Newbie to Full Member, then come very close to Senior Member.
Honestly, I gone faster than what I envisioned at the start of 2019.
I have been rewarded around 100 sMerits since the start of 2019, it's amazing.

Today, I thought that it might be great if the forum launch a new collection of badges for self-made users.
The collection will be totally different the current badges.
It might help forum users easily to distinguish between self-made users, and airdropped users.
Of course, for some users, there are overlaps between airdropped and self-made between ranks.

1) Self-made Full Members:

2) Self-made Senior Members:

3) Self-made Heroes:

4) Self-made Ledgendaries:

Fully displayed badge:

I hope that theymos will accept the collection on April 1st this year.

I couldn't wait for April 1st, I'm wearing it now Cheesy
You remind me what made me shock on 1st of April last year.
It's a big shock for me after the merit system launch in January of 2018.
Last year, I felt like, "OMG, merits, karma, politeness, etc. All of them will ruin my life".  Smiley

8255  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: February 24, 2019, 08:41:02 AM
It depends on both Ethereum and Bitcoin.
There is uncertainty about the sustainability of the current rising tide of Ethereum.
Personally, I took profit and jumped out.
Maybe, I did not take profits at the highest price of this wave, but it is enough for my target.
I will wait more weeks to see what happen next with Ethereum, till making my next orders.
Just wish that not another bull trap! It’ll fall faster than it raised, thus don’t get too excited. Hold off until you see another strong signal. Possibly we are toward the start of a bull run, this is the thing that my fantasy. My earnest appeal kept growing and growing.
8256  Other / Meta / Re: Suggestion: Replace avatars of banned members on: February 24, 2019, 07:34:18 AM
Agreed.
Avatar is needed and essential to help others know that which accounts got banned.
No, leave the avatar: an avatar without signature is an easy indicator that the account is banned.
Nevertheless, I think that the specific avatar designed by the forum is better than keeping the avatar each user used before got banned.
Like this one:

Because, without specific indicative avatar like this, it will be a trick for new users.
They don't have enough knowledge about the forum to know that those accounts got banned or not.

Update for today:
For full analysis results, please visit the following two topics:
1) Time Series Analysis on Distributed Merits in the forum (daily, weekly, monthly)
2) Tracking the difference of merit circulations with Default Trust Changes
It seems that the Default Trust Changes's effects on merit circulations have almost gone away, 6 weeks later the Default Trust Change.

Time series plot

Basic statistics:
- 50% of observed weeks have total intra-week merits above 4466, whilst the rest 50% of them have total intra-week merits below 4466. 4466 is the median.
- 50% of observed weeks have total intra-week merits fluctuated in the range from 3809 to 5559 (the interquartile range, from p25 to p75, in raw statistics below).
- Min - max: 3065 - 30949.

Code:
. tabstat merit, s(n mean sd p50 p25 p75 min max)

    variable |         N      mean        sd       p50       p25       p75       min       max

       merit |        56  5787.393  4421.065    4465.5      3809    5558.5      3065     30949
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Potential outliers:
Code:

. di 5558.5-3809
1749.5

. di 1749.5*1.5
2624.25

. di 5558.5+2624.25
8182.75

. di 3809-2624.25
1184.75
It means that potential outliers are weeks that have intra-week merits beyond 1185 or 8183.
How many weeks are potential outliers?
Code:
. count if (merit >= 8183| merit < 1185) & merit != .
  6
6 weeks are outliers, in total.
List of those six weeks:
Code:
. list merit week if merit >=8183 | merit <=1185
