941  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: A Non-Custodial wallet, Atomic Wallet, being compromised on: June 04, 2023, 04:26:00 PM
Thanks for sharing this!

I am a long time atomic user and never had any problems with it. Reading this makes me overthink using it in the future.

It would be foolish to continue using this wallet after reading about multiple reports of lost funds from all over. Even the official website has disabled software downloads, and they have stated that they are currently investigating the issue.

But I wonder, how can wallets be compromised? How will hackers gain access?
Does Atomic store customers seeds or how is it even possible?

Every wallet stores customer seeds and private keys internally; it cannot function differently. But since this is a closed-source wallet, we cannot know what is happening in the background. Some preliminary reports claim that it was a malicious update originating from a hacked official site, but there is still no official explanation.

Sorry if my questions are kind of stupid. I have no idea about the technicalities.

No, your questions are not stupid, but it is still too early to say anything because we do not know what actually happened.

I just use the wallet from time to time for smaller transactions.

If you still have funds in your wallet, it is advisable to transfer them to a safe place as soon as possible.

What is the difference from that from example an wallet like Exodus?
I got quite a lot of money right now at Exodus.
Should I be worried?

Honestly, I do not know much about the Exodus wallet. I haven't really looked into it or tried it out myself. But from what I gather, there does not seem to be any connection between the Exodus wallet and the Atomic wallet. So, I reckon this might not be the ideal thread to have a discussion about it.

If you have concerns regarding the security of your cryptocurrency assets, I recommend doing thorough research on best practices for implementing a form of cold storage. One popular option is to consider hardware wallets, which offer enhanced security measures. However, there are other viable methods as well. For instance, you can explore the option of setting up a reputable open-source wallet on an offline (air-gapped) device.

Trading involves  Two conceptsfire and grid. If the market is going up, grid comes into play and if it's going down fire comes into play.

This guy is cooking something... Grin

Curse you! Now all I can think about is sinking my teeth into some juicy barbecue. Thanks a lot for planting that delicious idea in my mind!  Grin

On top of that, Atomic wallet is owned is owned by Binance which historically has few questionable behavior.
Are you confusing them with Trust wallet? I didn't think Atomic was also owned by Binance?

Yeah, I was confused between Atomic and Trust wallet. Their homepage which show review from "CZ Binance" on Trustpilot[1] also add confusion since i remember CZ Binance also promote Trust wallet on Twitter some time ago[2].

I have been searching around this forum, but I could not find any previous discussions about this specific topic. However, I did come across a few articles from 2018 that shed some light on the partnership between CZ Binance and Konstantin G., who is the CEO and founder of AtomicWallet and the former CEO and co-founder of Changelly.

945  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: IS ATOMIC WALLET HACK OR SCAM? 🔴 Immediately Withdraw your Funds on: June 04, 2023, 12:31:18 PM
So if i have understood this correctly the people using atomic wallet have from nowhere lost their funds they have on the wallet? wow that is crazy and sad.
Is it possible to see where the funds has been sent? How is this possible to even happen? Do you think its some hacker outside atomic that is responsibility for this or atomic?

It is hard to say for sure what's going on at the moment. Based on what I've seen on Twitter and Reddit, it seems that over $20 million has been reported as stolen so far. However, it's highly probable that the final total will end up being much higher.

According to the information I've come across, it appears that the attack originated from hacking their official website. The attackers allegedly released a malicious version of the software disguised as an upgrade. But this is all unconfirmed at this point and should be taken as speculation.

This is kinda worrying news if something like this can happen at atomic, it could happen on another wallet provider to, and with that said... to hold bitcoin is no longer a safe thing.
Life changer. Hope I wrong.

You are wrong. You know, Atomic wallet is actually closed source software, and that makes a big difference. Moreover, to the best of my knowledge, it has never really been endorsed or recommended by the Bitcoin community, if you catch my drift.

You can even see this from the trust rating on their bitcointalk profile:

JollyGood    2018-11-01    Reference    Thanks to user ni23457 we now know ChangeNOW, Changelly, Evercode, Guarda and Atomic Swaps are operated by the same scammers.

They use selective scamming techniques to steak from people but on this occasion the user "ni23457" exposed the scam artists for the scammer thieves they are.

The user ni23457 paid for Bitcointalk banner adverts from his pockets in order to expose the ChangeNOW, Changelly, Evercode, Guarda and Atomic Swaps scammers because they stole 110 BCH from him but he made them give it back !

Thanks for the information OP although Wind_FURY had posted same thing earlier on Wallet Software board.

There is no harm at all about posting that information in multiple boards. In fact, it can be really helpful, especially if it turns out to be true. Spreading the word and letting people know about a compromised wallet is a good thing. After all, there is strength in numbers, right? So, by posting in multiple boards, you are increasing the chances of reaching a wider audience and making sure the information reaches those who need it most.

I couldn't find any specific information on whether incident reports are related to a particular platform, such as desktop or mobile, or if they are related to all wallet versions. It would be helpful to have more clarity on this matter.

By the way, why is this thread in the Web wallets section?

What is the lesson im trying to say, keep your focus even though things get tough, keep moving even though its slow, because eventually those sacrifices will have a positive results, never get tired,
because once you quit, you will never get those dreams came true

From a somewhat different perspective, one could emphasize the significance of adaptability and flexibility. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and sometimes our initial dreams or plans may need to be adjusted along the way. Yes, I agree that sometimes it is important to remain persistent and focused, but it is equally important to remain open to new opportunities and possibilities that may arise. This does not mean giving up on your dreams, but to remain flexible and willing to evolve with our dreams.

Oh, wow, I was so impressed by your incredibly insightful comment that I couldn't help but stop reading right there. Clearly, you are a true expert in the field.  Grin

By the way, just in case you have some unconfirmed transactions stuck, according to mempool.space, the current recommended high priority transaction fee is around 38 sat/vB. Make a note of it.

Like does it mean mining Bitcoin has a threshold ? After which mining will no longer be possible

Did you read that thread? Why not ask your question there instead of opening a new topic?

To answer your question: No, there is no specific threshold where mining will no longer be possible. Mining is actually a crucial component of the Bitcoin protocol, and without it, Bitcoin would cease to exist. The mining process is essential for confirming new transactions and ensuring the functionality of the currency. Without mining, bitcoins would essentially become worthless.

However, what you may not have understood is that there will be a time when miners will no longer receive newly created coins as a reward for their work. But this does not mean mining will become impossible or unprofitable. Miners will still receive transaction fees for including transactions in a block. So, there is still an incentive to keep mining even without the newly minted coins.
951  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Come and Join the Union State of Russia and Belarus to get Nuclear weapons! on: June 02, 2023, 09:04:35 PM
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying nukes are not dangerous. What I am saying is that the proof for it might be the dangerous thing.

What if Hiroshima and Nagasaki were TNT explosions, and the top secret government stuff in WW2 was the advertising that it was nukes? What if the Jap government is going along with the US government and is simply lying to keep Japanese people out of the areas.

Do you know for a fact that there were nukes used in WW2? If you do, how do you know? Do you simply believe your commanders who told you the lie? Or did you actually, personally get burned by nuclear material?

Don't get me wrong. Maybe there is no lie in the idea that nukes are dangerous. But how does anybody know... and especially since there are people who worked on nukes who have said that the dangers are way less than they are advertised to be?

Cool

Well, that is an interesting theory, but by the same argument, how can we really be sure that it is even possible to cause such destruction with TNT or some other type of explosive? I have never personally experienced an explosion of that magnitude, so I cannot be certain. Instead, I rely on the credibility of historians, scientists, and eyewitness testimonies, which provide well-documented evidence. It's worth noting that there were individuals who experienced that horrific event firsthand and survived long enough to tell the tale.
952  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Come and Join the Union State of Russia and Belarus to get Nuclear weapons! on: June 01, 2023, 10:37:23 PM
There are those who think that nukes are fake. They think that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed by tons and tons of TNT to fake the nuke story.
~

Ah, yes, the ever-thriving community of conspiracy theorists. It never ceases to amaze me how imaginative some can be in crafting alternative explanations for historical events.  Grin

I know you were probably being sarcastic, but if someone really thinks that nuclear weapons do not exist - how do we explain the existence of nuclear power plants and nuclear-powered generators? They are using nuclear reactions to generate a whole bunch of heat, which is then converted into electricity. And let us not forget about the Chernobyl disaster. So yeah, there is some real-world evidence that makes it pretty hard to deny the existence and impact of nuclear technology.
953  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is OP? on: June 01, 2023, 10:10:55 PM
but I also get a few questions in my mind. Since when in this forum did the OP mark start to be pinned to the name of the user who first made the poster? Huh
~

On September 9, 2022, PowerGlove initiated a discussion topic titled "Identifying the OP at a glance (SMF patch)." A few days later, on September 12, 2022, theymos implemented a patch and activated this feature on the forum.

I probably never would've spent the ~hour figuring out how to add it because it strikes me as unnecessary, but I also don't see the harm in it. Since you wrote the code, I added it. Thanks!
954  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Best open source hardware wallets for BTC? on: June 01, 2023, 09:29:16 PM
You are speaking fact here but do you know that the Electrum wallet stays online most times because you are running on your smartphone with a 24/7 internet connection? This is where hardware wallets beat got wallets, staying offline is what hardware is good at and this makes them the best type of crypto wallet, but Electrum as a open source wallet is better than hardware wallets that are closed source, your point is valid.

I did not see anyone talking about the Electrum mobile app for smartphones.

Electrum mobile is great if you want to make frequent transactions or payments, but if safety is your primary concern I recommend using Electrum on an offline computer. If you need to make transactions, you can always use Electrum on a smartphone or online computer in watch-only mode.

I am not saying you should not use a good open-source hardware wallet, but if one is too expensive for your budget there are other options that can be almost as secure (if not more so).
955  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: No Asic miner, No Bitcoin mining on: June 01, 2023, 09:13:18 PM
It is surprising that people still fall for cloud mining scams. I thought everyone knew by now that it is a bad idea.

When I first began my crypto journey, I naively believed that it could be a wise investment. However, after extensive research and reading numerous threads on this forum, I came to the conclusion that cloud mining is far from profitable for the average user, to say the least. I have come to the conclusion that most cloud mining companies are scams. They use clever marketing tactics and try to lure new investors into their scheme. The main reason why they do this is because they want your money, plain and simple.
956  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Question for Miners on: May 31, 2023, 10:05:10 PM
~
If this were possible what happens to the rejected transactions?

Absolutely! It is indeed possible. Should your transaction face rejection from one mining pool for any reason, it will probably be accepted by another pool. The key factor here is that your transaction fee meets the network's requirements.

Typically, miners prioritize transactions with higher fees, filling up blocks until they're full. This process continues until the block is successfully mined. Then, begins the selection process for a new block, repeating in a cyclical fashion as long as there are pending transactions. So, as long as you set an appropriate transaction fee and are patient enough, there is a good chance your transaction will eventually be accepted by a mining pool and processed on the blockchain.
957  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Throwback: First Bitcoin Website in 2009 on: May 31, 2023, 12:04:06 AM
I was unaware of this until you revealed the first Bitcoin website and how it appears.

Thank goodness for the advancement of technology. How are we to be running our bitcoin transactions if that bitcoin still functions with its old method of using an IP address to receive bitcoin up till now? While bitcoin is supposed to be transacted anonymously. That means anyone that wants to get involved with bitcoin will have to reveal his IP address, which makes him be easily traced by third parties or the government. No wonder, why so many people that heard about bitcoin at its early stage didn't bother to invest in it because they didn't want their IP addresses to be made public before transmitting or receiving bitcoin.

IP addresses have served just as an alternative means of transacting, rather than being the sole method. In the Bitcoin system, it is my understanding that Bitcoin addresses have always played a central role.

And, where did you come up with the idea that many people who learned about Bitcoin back then didn't invest in it because of that reason? Or are you simply making an assumption?

958  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: MINING WITH SOLAR POWER | WHAT WOULD YOU DO IN MY CASE? on: May 30, 2023, 08:22:15 PM
~
what would you do if you were me?

You can research which cryptocurrency is currently the most profitable to mine with your hardware and try it out for a month to see how much income you can generate. This will give you a better idea of the potential earnings from mining and help you make an informed decision on whether to continue mining or sell the extra power back to the electricity company. It should be a simple calculation after that. Either continue mining, or sell electricity and buy crypto directly with that money. Also keep in mind that mining can put a significant amount of stress on your hardware, which can lead to a shorter lifespan and more frequent breakdowns.
959  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Throwback: First Bitcoin Website in 2009 on: May 29, 2023, 09:06:39 PM
Also interesting to note that it took until 2020 before a more "normal" looking website appeared with translations and the like.
~

It depends on what you consider a "normal" looking website.  Cheesy

If we take a trip down memory lane with the help of the Wayback Machine, we can see that the bitcoin.org website underwent a makeover makeover back in December 2010. And, even during that early stage, the website already boasted translations into several globally spoken languages.

https://web.archive.org/web/20101230111105/http://www.bitcoin.org/

~
Since Bitcoin doesn't actually have an official website.

Back in those days, when Bitcoin was just beginning to gain traction, one of the primary locations where people could get the official Bitcoin client was the official website itself, bitcoin.org. The bitcoin.org domain was registered by Satoshi. As the original creator, there is no one more official than him when it comes to Bitcoin. A lot of things changed after he left.
960  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Educating unemployed friends about Bitcoin on: May 28, 2023, 06:42:11 PM
And I assure them if we all get involved in Bitcoin maybe our unemployment will go away. Because there are enough ways to earn money with Bitcoin.

Oh, absolutely! Forget about traditional job markets, education, and skill development. Just jump on the Bitcoin bandwagon, and all your employment worries will magically disappear!  Cheesy

But seriously, sarcasm aside, while Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies can provide unique opportunities for earning, very few of them result in sustainable income or long-term financial stability.

Let us explore some ways to earn bitcoins. There are four common methods: investing, mining, trading, and freelancing/accepting Bitcoin payments. However, considering your friends' unemployment status and limited start-up capital, the first three options may not be viable. That leaves us with freelancing and accepting Bitcoin payments, which can also be done using traditional payment methods, not just cryptocurrencies. So, what other ways do you suggest for your friends to explore in order to earn Bitcoin?

Because bitcoin crypto currency is completely illegal in my country. So how can I help my friends in this regard?

Engaging in illegal activities can have serious consequences. If Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are illegal in your country, I suggest exploring other legal and legitimate financial opportunities that align with the laws and regulations of your country.
