941  Other / Meta / Re: What if someone is wrongfully banned for plagiarism? on: January 24, 2019, 11:22:54 PM
First of all, if you have a history of good posts, then we're going to be suspicious of any plagiarism accusations. Second, if it does happen, you can come to Meta on a new account and explain it.

That exact scenario happened with chimk, and he was unbanned after we found out. And although it was certainly a big mistake on our part to have banned him in the first place, the person who framed him did in in a pretty sophisticated way, and his case was exacerbated by the language barrier (eg. we were unable to immediately determine whether he was a good poster or not).
942  Other / Politics & Society / Venezuela on: January 24, 2019, 10:58:11 PM
What are your thoughts on the current situation in Venezuela? I know that Bitcoin is pretty popular there; do we have any Venezuelan forum members?

Guaidó is the most obvious CIA-backed politician I've ever seen, but Maduro is totally evil. I'd recommend that the people of Venezuela find a third option, but between the two I suppose Guaidó is probably better...?

The interventionists in the US government really want to send troops there, so they're having diplomats stand in the crossfire in the hope that an incident occurs and this can be used as an excuse to invade. If Maduro is really careful, this can maybe be avoided, and perhaps he can last a while longer. Even though the US is talking as though they'll militarily support anti-Maduro rebels, I don't think that they'll actually openly do so without something that they can say constitutes major provocation.

Whatever happens, I hope that the situation in Venezuela finally improves. From what I've heard, it's been basically a hellhole there for at least several years.

"ツ" aka "Tsu" was adopted as the official currency symbol of the project.

Bad idea IMO since ツ is so common in Japanese. It'd be like using the letter "G" as their symbol.
945  Other / Meta / Re: grin is now accepted for forum payments on: January 23, 2019, 12:50:16 AM
Theymos, for someone who touts the importance of decentralization above all else, your level of hypocrisy by allowing yourself to play such a central role in the crypto community simply because you were the first to jump major discussion mediums is quite astounding.

Take a look at the interesting and worthwhile developments of the past 5 years, and not just the few your buddies throw their weight behind.

We've built blockchains that are interoperable, language agnostic, free to use, highly scalable, highly secure (in some instances- more secure than Bitcoin)... the list goes on. Some of these are unpolished, like Grin (which you concede), but others are running as well oiled machines. Is there any argument behind your point of view besides ignorance of how the space has changed in the latter half of the decade? "I'm Theymos so I am right" only works so many times.

You seem to have mistaken me for some sort of politician. If anyone interprets anything I say/do as "I'm theymos so I'm right," then they have totally misunderstood me. I'm very interested in grin on a technical level (not so much for investment), and I didn't see any harm in supporting it, so I spent a few hours adding it to the forum. I'm not trying to make any grand statement here. If grin ends up failing completely, then that will not be too surprising.

Occasionally in other cases I might have an attitude of, "I'm doing it this way because I'm convinced that I'm right. If I'm wrong, show me." If you disagree with my view that all but a few altcoins are based 95-100% on marketing, with only very half-baked actual features/ideas, then that's fine; I won't stop you. Use one or more of those altcoins to build interesting things, and I will be happy to see the ecosystem usefully expand in surprising ways.
946  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 267 on: January 22, 2019, 11:45:07 PM
The forum sells ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page. This income is used primarily to cover hosting costs and to pay moderators for their work (there are many moderators, so each moderator gets only a small amount -- moderators should be seen as volunteers, not employees). Any leftover amount is typically either saved for future expenses or otherwise reinvested into the forum or the ecosystem.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation. Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser (Firefox, 900px wide). Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. No ICOs[1], banks, funds, or anything else that a person can be said to "invest" in; I may very rarely make exceptions if you convince me that you are ultra legit, but don't count on it. Ads may be rejected for other reasons, and I may remove ads even after they are accepted.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Nine of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

Duration

- Your ads are guaranteed to be up for at least 7 days.
- I usually try to keep ads up for no more than 8 or 9 days.
- Sometimes ads might be up for longer, but hopefully no longer than 12 days. Even if past rounds sometimes lasted for long periods of time, you should not rely on this for your ads.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats

Info about the current ad slots:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

Ad blocking

Hero/Legendary members, Donators, VIPs, and moderators have the ability to disable ads. I don't expect many people to use this option. These people don't increase the impression stats for your ads.

I try to bypass Adblock Plus filters as much as possible, though this is not guaranteed. It is difficult or impossible for ABP filters to block the ad space itself without blocking posts. However, filters can match against the URLs in your links, your CSS classes and style attributes, and the HTML structure of your ads.

To prevent matches against URLs: I have some JavaScript which fixes links blocked by ABP. You must tell me if you want this for your ads. When someone with ABP and JavaScript enabled views your ads, your links are changed to a special randomized bitcointalk.org URL which redirects to your site when visited. People without ABP are unaffected, even if they don't have JavaScript enabled. The downsides are:
- ABP users will see the redirection link when they hover over the link, even if they disable ABP for the forum.
- Getting referral stats might become even more difficult.
- Some users might get a warning when redirecting from https to http.

To prevent matching on CSS classes/styles: Don't use inline CSS. I can give your ad a CSS class that is randomized on each pageload, but you must request this.

To prevent matching against your HTML structure: Use only one <a> and no other tags if possible. If your ads get blocked because of matching done on something inside of your ad, you are responsible for noticing this and giving me new ad HTML.

Designing ads

Make sure that your ads look good when you download and edit this test page:
https://bitcointalk.org/ad_test.html
Also read the comments in that file.

Images are not allowed no matter how they are created (CSS, SVG, or data URI). Occasionally I will make an exception for small logos and such, but you must get pre-approval from me first.

The maximum size of any one ad is 51200 bytes.

I will send you more detailed styling rules if you win slots in this auction (or upon request).

Auction rules

You must be at least a Jr Member to bid. If you are not a Jr Member and you really want to bid, you should PM me first. Tell me in the PM what you're going to advertise. You might be required to pay some amount in advance. Everyone else: Please quickly PM newbies who try to bid here to warn them against impersonation scammers.

If you have never purchased forum ad space before, and it is not blatantly obvious what you're going to advertise, say what you're going to advertise in your first bid, or tell me in a PM.

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the maximum number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all nine slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 9 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 9 slots. If the two highest bids are 9 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 8 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.02.
- The bidding starts at 0.02.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time. Unless I say otherwise, I typically try to end auctions within a few days of 10 days from the time of this post, but unexpected circumstances may sometimes force me to end the auction anytime between 4 and 22 days from the start. I have a small bias toward ending auctions on Fridays, Sundays, and Mondays.
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done.

I reserve the right to reject bids, even days after the bid is made.

Price flattening

At the end of the auction, after the winning bids are all determined, I will do a "price flattening" operation. This has no effect on which bids actually win. For each bid, in order of lowest to greatest price/slot, I will reduce each bid's price/slot to the highest value which is equal to or only the minimum increment greater than the next-lower bid. This allows you to bid higher prices without worrying so much, but you still mustn't bid more than you're willing to pay. Example:

Code:
This:
Slots  BTC/Slot  Person
    6      0.20       A
    1      0.16       B
    1      0.08       C
    1      0.08       D

Becomes:
Slots  BTC/Slot  Person
    6      0.12       A [step 4: reduced to 0.10+0.02=0.12]
    1      0.10       B [step 3: reduced to 0.08+0.02=0.10]
    1      0.08       C [step 2: same as the next-lowest, unchanged]
1      0.08       D [step 1: the lowest bid is always unchanged]

Payment, etc.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else, and I might even give you a negative trust rating. I will send you the payment information via forum PM from this account ("theymos", user ID 35) after announcing the auction results in this thread. You might receive false payment information from scammers pretending to be me. They might even have somewhat similar usernames. Be careful.

[1]: For the purposes of forum ads, an ICO is any token, altcoin, or other altcoin-like thing which meets any of the following criteria: it is primarily run/backed by a company; it is substantially, fundamentally centralized in either operation or coin distribution; or it is not yet possible for two unprivileged users of the system to send coins directly to each other in a P2P way. The intention here is to allow community efforts to advertise things like Litecoin, but not to allow ICO funding, even when the ICO is disguised in various ways.

Can Grin be used to pay for forum ads as well?

Probably, but we'd negotiate a rate. You can't rely on the automatic-forum-payments rate for this.
949  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Grin | PoW Mining | Electronic transactions for all. Community driven. on: January 22, 2019, 04:44:21 PM
let's say I create a TX file to send to you. Then for whatever reason you fail to create a response file for me to finalize and you accuse me that my TX file was bad. Is there a way for a third party to verify that?

It should be possible if you publish the tx data, but currently there seems to be no functionality for this. This was one of my complaints in my forum-grin-payments thread.

For now:
 - If someone might lie about receiving grin from you, don't trade with them.
 - If you receive a transaction, consider it as absolutely unreliable until it's confirmed.
 - If you send a transaction but the process is interrupted before you finalize it, you need to do grin wallet cancel -t TXID and then (due to a bug which will probably eventually be fixed) grin wallet check
950  Other / Meta / Re: Signature advertisers: suggestions? on: January 21, 2019, 11:16:02 PM
What is the problem we're trying to solve with this?

Increase the forum's usefulness for its members.

Also, forum systems can be designed to encourage good behavior. For example, if I got everyone involved in sig ads to use a forum-provided signature management system / stats tracker, then I could show only a "modified impressions" value which takes the real impressions value and subtracts from it if the person is getting posts deleted by mods (or something like that).
951  Other / Meta / Signature advertisers: suggestions? on: January 21, 2019, 06:25:21 PM
Honestly, I find signature advertisements distasteful, and it is not impossible that I will someday ban the practice. However, it's obviously an important part of the forum ecosystem today. So if you use signatures for advertising, what are your suggestions for forum improvements in that area?

For example, one idea I had was to allow users to subscribe to campaigns that other users set up, and then the campaigner could automatically push signature updates to everyone subscribed, and also track exactly when and for how long each user was subscribed. Would this be significantly useful? I'm not all that familiar with how these signature campaigns work, so I'm not sure.

However: the forum will never intermediate these transactions. We will not touch the money involved or perform any sort of "screening", etc. Also, I have no particular desire for the forum to take a cut of sig-ad transactions.

(I'm probably not going to implement anything in this area very soon, but the matter has been on my mind lately, and I wanted to see what people thought.)
952  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Grin | PoW Mining | Electronic transactions for all. Community driven. on: January 21, 2019, 12:49:32 AM
What are your thoughts on solo GPU mining at present ?

Worth it ? Or stick with pools other than f2pool ?

I'm not that interested in mining generally -- haven't mined anything in years --, so I can't really give advice. Solo mining will give you at least as much average income, but with more variance.

IMO the current price is roughly fair on a fundamental level, but I also wouldn't be surprised it it falls a lot more.
953  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Grin | PoW Mining | Electronic transactions for all. Community driven. on: January 21, 2019, 12:11:01 AM
How many transactions per second could the Grin network do right now? What plans are there to increase that if needed?

~1.5 MB max block size, with a block per minute. Transactions are much larger than Bitcoin, though. So about 14 tps right now.

Bitcoin's scaling is limited to a large degree by the need for historical blocks to be widely available. Grin on the other hand can mostly forget its history, so its full nodes only need to store/process live transactions, and grin can safely increase its max block size linearly with worldwide Internet speeds and/or CPU speeds.

Many altcoins just increase their max block size and hope for the best, but if any of these altcoins were actually widely used, this would cause severe centralization at best or total system failures at worst. It's like putting a bigger "max capacity" sign on an airplane. Some altcoins have ways of cutting out old history, but although there are theoretically some not-too-bad ways of doing this, usually altcoins do it in really centralized/stupid ways (eg. checkpoints, or ETH "full nodes" just not bothering to verify anything by default), and even in the best case it results in a loss of functionality and security. grin is the first coin with a reasonable, decentralized, and secure way of dropping historical data.
954  Other / Meta / Re: grin is now accepted for forum payments on: January 20, 2019, 04:31:42 PM
I don't know but I guess that the rate for grin is a fixed one, at
Code:
0.00675676 BTC via grin, send 2.252253333 grin

The prices and ratios in the forum's automatic payment handling are not permanent, but I only update them manually from time to time.
955  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Grin | PoW Mining | Electronic transactions for all. Community driven. on: January 20, 2019, 02:35:19 AM
You know Grin could easily be the king of in person transactions, imagine just tapping and the payment script gets transferred. Simple as that, no worries about double spend or any bullshit either. The file for transferring funds could really be nice.

Grin transactions are not immune to double-spends. Offline in-person Bitcoin transactions would have the same level of security.
956  Other / Meta / Minor selfmod enhancement on: January 19, 2019, 01:24:50 AM
In the "This is a self-moderated topic" warning, stats will now be printed about how many posts have been deleted if any posts have been deleted. The stats start now, not the beginning of time, and they are cached for quite some time. If any of the deleted posts had any merit before they were deleted, then this whole stat block will be printed in bold. Currently the stats never reset; I haven't decided yet whether this is OK.
957  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 18, 2019, 06:34:43 PM
Despite everyone's biggest fears that keep getting repeated ad nauseum, he flat out told people not to invest in it now seeing as how 60 coins are produced every 60 seconds and its highly experimental, unproven software that may have zero value in the future.

Yeah, I'm not making major purchases now or anything. And I definitely wouldn't mine it if doing so becomes unprofitable (though in fact it seems very profitable right now due to hype). Price-wise, IMO it'll start looking like a good buy if it hasn't been superseded by clones in about a year. I'll be looking for a point of low sentiment at that time. Some people have said that you'll need to wait like 3 years before it escapes from its inflation pit, but keep in mind that Bitcoin's inflation-rate-over-time was roughly the same in its first 4 years; such high initial inflation is why you saw people buying pizzas for 10k BTC like it was nothing. But growth, if it occurs, can overcome even pretty massive inflation.

The tech is just so awesome: a high degree of privacy combined with by far the best decentralization-preserving on-chain scaling tech ever devised, plus several smaller innovations in grin's particular implementation. Even if it was somehow guaranteed to halve in price every year, I'd still consider it cool and want to do something with it.
958  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Grin | PoW Mining | Electronic transactions for all. Community driven. on: January 18, 2019, 04:38:11 PM
So, does a recipient necessarily need prior knowledge that they are about to receive some coins

Yes. Grin transactions always work in a multi-step process like this:
1. The sender runs grin wallet send -m file -d FILE.txt GRIN_AMOUNT, which creates the file FILE.txt.
2. The sender gives FILE.txt to the recipient.
3. The recipient runs grin wallet receive -i FILE.txt, which creates another file FILE.txt.response.
4. The recipient gives FILE.txt.response to the sender.
5. The sender runs grin wallet finalize -i FILE.txt.response, and the transaction is done.

There are also methods involving IP addresses, keybase.io, and a "grinbox address" service, but behind-the-scenes these methods do the same steps as above, where the sender and recipient need to cooperate in order to form the final transaction

Will it be ok to do payments/offer services  in grin in the sections that were exclusively marked for bitcoin?

No.

Can GRIN do this? Can GRIN compete with VISA and remain decentralized and immutable with a fixed supply and no trust in 3rd parties?

s/fixed supply/predictable supply/

Yes, that combined with its privacy is what makes it so exciting. You can probably achieve even greater scaling with BTC+LN, and I consider that quite likely to be what the economy actually goes toward, but grin is a very different and interesting alternative approach.
