Please respond quickly as my time is limited.

They are called servicenodes,
Don't let the door hit you on your way out!

yup - the open source community is MASSIVE now ...

and thank God for that ...

#crysx

Kinda restores the faith in humanity. Doesn't it?  Smiley

They can be as 'covert' and 'spread' in the way the operate - but the world isnt allowed to be 'anonymous' and 'decentralized' in the way we all operate ...

double standards much? ...

Double standards is the very definition of government.

They are allowed to do what you and I are not.
Their ends always justify their means, but no moral being would follow such a rule.

Also, can anyone supply the SpreadCoin logo vector please? Didn't see it on the .info site.

The pdf here has vector files embedded: http://www.spreadcoin.info/downloads/SpreadCoin-Identity-Rgb.pdf

that's why you can zoom into the logo forever.

But I am not sure how to extract it from the pdf...

Pdf was created by Sandwichspread: http://spreadcointalk.org/index.php?topic=14.0

haven't heard from him in a while, not sure if he is still an active member.

That's great. I've opened it up in Adobe Illustrator and separated all the elements. I'll make individual files for each part and get it back over to you so you can make it available to everyone.

damn - beat me to it mate ... but i use inkscape ( linux ) ...

#crysx

inkscape is a nice piece of free open source software.  Smiley
Really, the open source world is so rich, compared to 10 years ago.

Yes, letting people upload whatever content to the network will cause a lot of problems.

Even if the files are encrypted with only some participants having the access keys,
it will be easy to blackmail us by uploading content to the network and threaten to anonymously send an access key to some government authority.

and this is different to any other storage / systems provider currently active today how? ...

#crysx

The difference is that todays storage system providers have to police their own servers and uploaded content all the time.
(control uploads, receive copyright claims and delete illegal copies, etc..., and if they don't do that, their servers will be confiscated and their business shut down.)

A decentralized content system can't be policed or else by definition it can't be decentralized anymore.

And that's why government authorities would then simply attack the decentralized network as a whole.
(and if they can't attack it, they will badmouth it and create more stupid laws, that take more of our freedom away...   Sad )

....they would even remove our pockets in our shirts to make sure that 'bad stuff' doesnt get around ...

That's the end goal, yes. The only thing government is capable of is increasingly move more towards that goal, and create more restrictions. That's their nature.

Wonderful. I was just about to say that I was able to open and extract the vectors with a free program called Inkscape,
and I uploaded a logo vector file here: http://spreadcoin.info/downloads/spreadcoin_logo.svg

But it would be great if you would make individual files of every vector and send them to me. Thanks in advance.

If you have any further design ideas let me know, I guess we have an open vacancy...

Well well well, looks what we have here...

Is it possible to merge this amazingly awesome feature into spreadcoin's servicenodes?
I hope it is, because that'll be AWESOME.

 Shocked That is awesome!

here is the official thread guys ...

Interesting, but also frightening feature because it is pretty inevitable that it will be used to spread illegal content. Do we want spreadcoin to take that direction?

Spreadcoin is a currency, it could be used to buy illegal things. Should we not go in the direction of currency?

Morning all, just wanted to jump in and introduce myself. I've been following SpreadCoin for quite a bit now, though my main interest has been Dash. I've got an Android app that quite a few people are using  called My Masternodes Pro, which is a masternode monitor and alert tool. I've also recently acquired the buydash.co.uk site.

I've reconfigured large parts of buydash.co.uk to work with SpreadCoin and changed the look and feel to match. I understand that volumes, this early down the road, are pretty small. I am confident that this will change and would like to try and offer an easy way for people to buy SpreadCoin.

I'd also be really keen to develop mobile apps / tools that may slot into SPR ServiceNode ownership, once everything starts moving properly in that area.

I'd say the buyspreadcoin.co.uk site is pretty much finished and I want to spend a little while longer testing beofre launch, but I've uploaded a few screenshots in the meantime.

http://imgur.com/a/Ekfr1

Also, thanks very much to StoneHedge for help and advice. Certainly owe him a beer or two with the constant questions.

Welcome calnaughton Jr.

We are going to need mobile app developers soon for sure, and buyspreadcoin.co.uk preview looks awesome, can't wait to see the finished product.

I think Dash predicted/guessed that masternode numbers would stabilise at around the 3,000 mark due to market forces.  It turned out to be not a bad guess.  I think they're around 2,600 and slowly growing at the moment.

If anybody has half an hour to spare, here's a presentation on how Youtube is provisioned.  Google Bigtable is rad.

https://sites.google.com/site/poweredbyyoutube/Home/powered-by-youtube---youtubes-infrastructure

I watched this presentation a little bit, and was impressed, until I realized that it is from 2008.
Which is the scariest thing about this, because today the technological requirements for youtube must be 10 - 100 x bigger.
971  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (official thread) on: May 13, 2015, 10:39:42 AM
You clearly have quite an exciting private life George  Cool

A simple question if I may?  If SPR will be providing decentralized services using service nodes, wouldn't it be the case that the more nodes that are active and performing well the better?  I love the idea of scoring based on QoS but if there is a hard coded limit to the maximum number of service nodes based on coin supply, doesn't that limit the distribution of the service node network?

Wouldn't it be better to have 1,000 good snodes running than 800 good snodes in terms of overall network health?

The amount of SNs won't be hardcoded, but it will be limited by the protocol.
It will follow a curve similar to coin supply.

Mr. Spread originally came up with the idea of a limited hardcoded amount of Masternodes, a fix number (1000 or 1440)
because from a decentralization standpoint it makes sense to expose servicenodes
to the same market forces that hashrate and currency value are exposed to too.

My idea goes a little further by allowing this limit to slowly increase over time
(which should lead to about 7000 servicenodes when we reach 100% coinsupply)

So, we will never see something like 10000 servicenodes, but I don't think that Dash will see 10000 Masternodes either, and they don't even have a limit.
(That's just the nature of it: they do have a theoretical limit ofcourse, which is total coinsupply / 1000 ----> it is not possible to have more than 20000 Masternodes in DASH)

So having a few thousand servicenodes seems to be a very reasonable number.

Also, tell me any other service worldwide, google, youtube whatever... and how many servers they need to run a successful service for millions of people?

I doubt that youtube has 7000 servers, but I could be wrong.  Smiley
Google certainly has that: http://www.google.com/about/datacenters/gallery/#/all/20
lol

972  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (official thread) on: May 13, 2015, 08:36:30 AM

The more SPR you have in your servicenode the better score you receive on the "list".
The "list" or "spread" is a total amount of servicenode's allowed on the network at any one time.

This will change everyday as one new node is allowed on the "list".

Load up your nodes with as much SPR as you can, or else you may run the risk of losing a seat in the "spread".
Also try to dilute your holdings to achieve as many SPR servicenodes as possable.

No, the plan is that the amount of SPR will not influence your score at all.

It will merely allow you to participate.

Once you are in, the score will asses if you should be kicked out when doing a bad job.
(each service will be judged separately)

It is important to realize that those two things (SPR and score) are used for slightly different things:

1) SPR is used at the entrance (kinda like a registration process: who is allowed to enter?)
2) Score is used to police those who have already entered. (who should be kicked out for misbehaviour?)

It is a little bit confusing I admit, because 1) works also like 2), because 1) can have the same effect as "kicking you out"
(because it "keeps you out" and this can therefor be mistaken with a score), but 1) has priority over 2).
If 1) isn't true, 2) doesn't even come into play (for the particular servicenode).
So 1) is like a gatekeeper, while 2) is like a police.

Therefor, even if you have 1000000 SPR in your service, you can be kicked out for doing a bad job.
This is because your SPR doesn't influence the score you will receive.

(maybe look at it like this: it's like a club that demands a dress code.
But ofcourse the club will kick even the well dressed people out if they act up.
So how well you are dressed is irrelevant once you are in the club, it's only relevant when you are not in the club yet.
Plus: ofcourse if you suddenly take your clothes off while in the club they will ALSO kick you out, lol  Grin
But while in the club it doesn't matter if you are better dressed than all the other well dressed people!

Lol, what an example, but I think it works.)

How's the development coming along, georgem? Busy weekend?

Yes, currently I am diving deep into Qt functions.
I am improving the looks and functionality of the wallet.

It's not FUD, I am just telling that the work patched is wrong, the word delayed is correct

Yes, so is every hashing or crypto algorithm, by providing just a large enough "hurdle" (delaying & keeping the attacker busy for a few billion years.   Grin )...

Those algorithms are not perfect. They are not built for eternity.

The goal in cryptography is to just always move the problems far far into the future.

So it's ALL about delay.
975  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] SpreadCoin | Decentralize Everything (official thread) on: May 11, 2015, 02:30:16 PM
Small Mistake, when you said you made the Epoch Time from int32 to int64, you just delayed the death, so instead of 2034, it will be 4068

Moving from int32 to int64 doesn't just double the value range,
in fact it multiplies it by 2^32, so it then becomes about 4.2 billion times larger.

Insanely larger:

Approximately 292 billion years from now, at 15:30:08 on Sunday, 4 December 292,277,026,596"

so instead of 2034, it will be 4068

Also, you have to start the counting from the year 1970, not from the birth of jesus christ!

Otherwise, you just did a delay, nothing more

Infinity only exists as a mathematical concept, everything else has its inevitable demise "just delayed": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_death_of_the_universe

please give me a peer address SPR.
i m not syncing... Embarrassed

Put this in your conf file:

Code:
addnode=5.35.253.206
addnode=94.23.23.194
addnode=52.17.253.8
addnode=37.59.18.108

I am currently working on an improved wallet (new features + better connectivity etc),
when it's ready you won't need to add nodes like that anymore.

Stay tuned.

Might want to update the OP. It appears the only exchange that has SPR now is Bittrex. Not a good thing IMO.

good point.  If decentralization is our aim, the entirety of acquirable spr should not exist on a single exchange.  I dig bittrex and all, but what happens to the state of the coin if the site gets compromised?

perhaps we should actively work to get it listed on cryptsy?

If you want other exchanges to get interested in spreadcoin, you need to spread the word about spreadcoin. (create blogs, videos, services, tools, extend spreadcoin in whatever way you can)

Voting to get listed is pointless, this is not how it works.

Cryptsy will list us anyway (even without votes) when they see much more activity about spreadcoin in the general social media and the internet.
That's what they do. They monitor the net for interesting coins.

I think it's better to make the limitation at a protocol level, IMHO it is just to have a healthier network.

Score will be in the protocol.
Amount of max allowed SN will also be controlled thru the protocol.

Ofcourse there will be a limiting factor on the side of your server's hardware.
Not well performing hardware will receive low score.

Otherwise you'll have a network with SN that will not be able to produce the asked service (or do it partially) ==> Unhappiness of the client of the service.

There will always be good and bad SNs,
and we will have a constant (deliberate) shutting down of SNs that don't behave well, (this could even include SNs that do everything right, but are nonetheless asked to improve themselves, because everybody else has improved...)

This is not unhealthy for the system, in the contrary it is where our health will come from.
If we constantly have nodes that are being shutdown and asked to register again when improved, it's like we keep our network fit by having it in a constant state of emergency.

Netflix and chaos monkey comes to mind:
