1961  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Charts - source code? on: September 17, 2013, 09:14:43 AM
Depends on the resolution that clients can access I guess - giving out your data points and letting clients render the stuff might be nice (especially when having hover-text etc.), on the other side these are harder to export + performance can go down a LOT once you go past a few dozen data points (depending on the client machine of course).

PNGs should be reasonably small anyways and data likely can be cached a little bit too.
A site using highcharts would be https://ripplecharts.com/ for example, if you want to check that out further.
1962  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple XRP to go open source on Sept 26 ! (UPDATE - already up 43% and climbing) on: September 17, 2013, 08:28:25 AM
Bitstamp seems to have its issues from time to time, yes.

If they don't transact within 24 hours, I'd recommend opening a ticket with them.
1963  Economy / Services / Re: Gigamining / Teramining on: September 16, 2013, 07:22:23 PM
Well, mine is not in process... still unpaid though as I am still refusing to sign these statements that were not part of the original deal.
1964  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple will be open-sourced on September 26!!! on: September 16, 2013, 03:40:41 PM
1) Yes, it is likely that there will be forks, which are also likely incompatible with OpenCoin's Ripple. Just as Bitcoin manages to survive just fine even though *coin exists, Ripple will probably also survive this as long as it is the better option amongst its competition. You can learn more about the protocol at the wiki most likely, if you have more specific questions feel free to ask in this forum (under "Alternate Cryptocurrencies" is most likely the best place, even if your question is about some other aspect in Ripple... Admins + Mods here are a bit jumpy when it comes to Ripple) or maybe also in the forum at ripple.com.

2) Well, I don't like this kind of "preaching" style too - Ripple is a very useful and nice system in my opinion and just informing people in a non (or at least less) sensationalist style is imho more useful in getting people to take a second look than populism in both directions ("Ripple will kick Bitcoin out of the water" vs. ripplescam.org which can be reduced to "it's closed source" and a misunderstanding what IOUs are and how they are generally used in society).
1965  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple XRP to go open source on Sept 26 ! on: September 16, 2013, 01:13:07 PM
Why two steps? shouldn't the USD terade directly to BTC ?

Or do they add a step deliberately to force their XRP to seem to have some value/use?
Market depth could be larger if you combine USD --> BTC and USD --> XRP --> BTC...

You can trade directly, XRP are used as intermediate only if the total trade would be cheaper. The only deliberatly forced mechanism in Ripple is that you need to have a minimum balance of XRP to use an account and to open trust lines. It does not seem like you watched the video linked in the OP.
1966  Other / Off-topic / Re: How the Ripple is going? on: September 15, 2013, 08:42:23 AM
b!z, what's your Ripple address?

What for?
Confirming your claim of selling 1 million XRP

They said that they would give some ripple coins for free, but never received any.

They said they give it to accounts created before February 2013, you simply dont qualify  Wink

Accounts here? I didn't receive shit!
Where is your post in the giveaway thread? Maybe you malformed it?
1967  Other / Off-topic / Re: How the Ripple is going? on: September 14, 2013, 08:40:17 PM
Every single Ripple nodes is controlled by a private for profit company. It is centralized, like a bank or PayPal. Not a decentralized currency.
I know this is wrong for a fact. Also Ripple does not try to be a currency, just like Bitcoin does not try to be a payment network.

b!z, what's your Ripple address?

I haven't heard of it. Can you explain what Ripple is about?

1968  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Laxmi Coin for India and international market on: September 14, 2013, 07:17:57 PM
You can check out and/or connect with the user "dishwara" on this board, he ran a GPU mining operation some years ago (and got burnt badly in the process). No idea where in India he's from though.
1969  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Laxmi Coin for India and international market on: September 14, 2013, 08:30:50 AM
Why would a 100% INR backed coin not simply be called "Rupee IOUs"?

If it is only partially backed, how would you attract customers?
"Hey, buy this ___coin for 1 Rupee - don't worry, you'll get back 0.5 Rupees if you give it back to me!" does not sound like a great deal - or if it does, I am happy to sell you SukrimBTC that are backed 90%(!) by the BTC I receive! 90% is higher than 50%, right?

They are equally as likely based on a sound sample of a fart during a phone talk between George W. Bush and Putin, intercepted by NSA and encoded in this number or the phrase "Satoshi Nakamoto's mom" run through a key derivation function... Roll Eyes

1972  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What other complex calculations can Bitcoin hashing power be use for? on: September 14, 2013, 08:02:35 AM
Mining other cryptocoins, as long as they use the same algorithm as Bitcoin and have similar header structures.

Other than that, there is a reason why it is called "Bitcoin mining algorithm" and not "generally applicable calculation".
1973  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Did Satoshi foresee that secp256r1 was compromised? on: September 14, 2013, 07:54:36 AM
Well, he was working on a system that does at least a partial brute-force attack on secure hashes. Seeing some magic constants whose only protection is that a "random"(?) value is being hashed and the hash is being used instead of the value itself might at least look suspicious enough for someone.

I however also doubt that there was very much of a design choice - maybe he did read through docs and whatnot, but realistically he just wanted something to get the job of signature verification done. Afaik bitcoin uses openssl, so he saw 2 defined curves with the same parameters, maybe he checked at least, which one has better performance characteristics or security, so he would have ended up with the k-curve, or it was pure luck.
1974  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Money2020, October 6-10, 2013 - Speakers list filled with Bitcoin and Ripple on: September 14, 2013, 07:43:54 AM
The Standard Fee for general admission is $2,590.

Well, if USD decrease in value a modest 2% per year due to inflation, after 2025 these 2590 USD are worth less than 2000 USD are now. Wink

About the (seemingly endless) Ripple debate - what do you honestly expect? To have the CEO of OpenCoin start to cry and sob and shout "I should have released the source code long ago, I am such a bad bad person!"? I haven't seen the Q&A session you were talking about, so I can't judge whether he was just wiggling out of some questions or if questions were just things that people just didn't get (like Ripple != XRP, you'll likely need XRP worth less than one of your wire fees from MtGox ever in your lifetime).
1975  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Ripple a scam? on: September 13, 2013, 11:04:01 AM
Well, that's possible right now and does not require you to run your own rippled.

Most likely you would need to develop against the https://ripple.com/wiki/Services_API and having more people actively developing bridges other than Bitstamp would be actually a great thing to have.

The code for this is NOT part of rippled though, so it either is not in OpenCoin's hands at all or just not existing. All you could do with rippled sources is to verify what happens internally once you send requests though these APIs.
1976  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Ripple a scam? on: September 13, 2013, 10:14:48 AM
Yeah, I can understand that, though having the ability to run your own rippled and/or to look at its code is not that much of a game-changer to be honest.

Hiring someone whose sole responsibility consists of getting the code ready for opening the code for the public and stating numerous times that they will open the server code (most recent discussion with them: https://ripple.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3602, 2 weeks ago) is not enough for you?

What would you need rippled code for exactly that would help you to develop gateway code and logic (other than peace of mind that you have the theoretical ability to run one on your own and that you could verify the inner workings and algorithms are actually working as documented on the wiki)?
1977  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is Ripple a scam? on: September 13, 2013, 09:51:03 AM

I wanted to plug in various currencies, or as it were permit various currencies to plug in by making gateways for various currencies, but so far that still is being put off seemingly indefinitely.

-MarkM-

Did you contact OpenCoin on that matter? Providing assistance for new gateways is among their highest priority tasks.

Only via forum posts basically. I am not looking to get some special foot in the door of a closed source system, what I had been about to do was to modify the gateway code per each of several coin types as free open source gateway code for a bunch of coins, based on the free open source gateway code already available in the samples collection.

However in addition to learning that people would not be able to use the gateway code due to unavailability of the rippled code, I also was told that actually the gateway code itself isn't suitable for real use, so all in all it seemed it was too early yet for people to start putting up gateways.

It also turned out that using other people's rippled means revealing your 'secret' to them, that was the biggest reason in fact for the absolute need to run a rippled of one's own.

So all in all it was a long way from being ready for people to start realistically using.

Before starting to adapt the gateway to more currencies for example, it needs to be robust enough for real production use.

Presumably the gateways online so far are either flaky code, not suitable for use, or had failed to submit pull requests of their fixes, or were straight-out proprietary systems from the get-go.

-MarkM-

You can sign transactions offline and never need to expose your secrets to a rippled instance. Running your own "signing" rippled locally only saves you from re-implementing https://github.com/ripple/ripple-lib/blob/develop/bin/rsign.js, that's all. The way to construct and sign a transaction is outlined at https://ripple.com/wiki/Constructing_a_transaction, how to get it to the network is outlined at https://ripple.com/wiki/Robustly_submitting_a_transaction. You can take the fully signed transaction and submit it to any rippled out there that is networked, also the one operated by e.g. Bitstamp if you mistrust OpenCoin's public servers.

Gateways are Ripple clients basically, not servers. You can run a gateway just fine against any rippled out there, the upside to running your own is that you have a node under your control for sure, have a voice in the voting process and can be sure if something fails that it was most likely your fault, not a random server on the net suddenly failing.

The way to contact OpenCoin to get access to rippled sources is not via forum PMs, you need to send a mail to partners@ripple.com, as outlined on https://ripple.com/wiki/Rippled. Most gateways I know do develop their own codebase though to interface their systems with Ripple, the code that is published as example might really be more of an example than being used anywhere in the wild.
1978  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple starts to conquer the world from China on: September 12, 2013, 10:18:00 AM
I don't have any trust rating on this web forum, also probably you still have the default trust settings (meaning you have the same list as the admin here by default until you actively start trusting individuals).

Could we discuss the forum trust settings and ratings somewhere else please? As I said, they do not constitute a distributed exchange at all and have nothing to do with Ripple as well.
1979  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple starts to conquer the world from China on: September 12, 2013, 07:33:00 AM
Like I said we already have a distributed exchange where i can trust different entities.

See Trust: 19: -0 / +23(23)
a web of trust is maybe a part of a distributed exchange but not all of it. You don't have a balance for example, so you need to look for and set up trades manually + both partners need to be online at about the same time. Also transactions that involve more than one trade are even harder. Lastly, there is not even an order book.

If you use the web of trust here as a distributed exchange, you're gonna have a bad time. It's not even the point of the system here to be an exchange mechanism, it's used to detect fraud and reward people who could be trusted.
Look at my rating for example - I did only few trades here and way before this rating was introduced, so I have little to show even though I'm a part of this community for over 2 years already and traded more bitcoins than some newbies with high ratings.

Trust in ripple does not work like in this forum by the way, a typical user only ever needs to trust a single gateway.

I guess (s)he meant: "A P2P network where you can exchange arbitrary/any currencies"
