1102  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [UPDATED] www.btcbalance.net - View your balance easily online. on: August 23, 2011, 08:39:57 AM
Rather than checking blockexplorer for your wallet data, have you considered running your own block data software? There's an open source version in development on this thread: http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=22785.0.

Yes of course.
I tried this, but for some reason I could not get it to work.
So for now I decided to go via the easy way.
Right now its okay to parse the information via blockexplorer.
If this thing grows big, I of course need to get this to work without parsing from the blockexplorer API.
Maybe add caching of the blockexplorer data every 30 minutes?
At least until you can setup your own.

1108  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Anyone else concerned about global hashrate? on: August 22, 2011, 06:17:51 AM
First, have you seen how freakin' difficult it is to get users to upgrade their clients?  0.3.24 has been out forever, yet countless users are still using earlier versions, probably because they don't even know a new client is there, or don't feel like being inconvenienced by it when their current client already works.  It would take days to get everyone upgraded, and until then different users will be operating on different branches of the block chain.
Maybe someone should start up a release mailing list?
1109  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcoin forks - Create new forum board? on: August 22, 2011, 05:28:30 AM
Having a section just for a fork would almost be like an insult (for how I see it, personally) to the Bitcoin economy.

An insult how? You think Bitcoin will have trouble competing? I see it as the opposite. If nobody can come up with a superior blockchain then the resilience of Bitcoin is proven and it will boost the confidence of the market.
An insult to think they could compete with Bitcoin. Grin

If I had control of a million zombies (which with a million zombies, you're probably just data-mining) it would be WAY more secure[*] to sell data (CC, Logins...etc) than to mine for Bitcoins.

[*] - I can't think of a better word. :\

[Edit]:
Think of it like this.

If you watch mobster movies about the group trying to buy a massive load of drugs/guns, they already know exactly where to buy from.
Now, think of it in the eyes of the seller (zombie controller)...they know who to sell to.

Groups in control of ~million zombies data-mining aren't looking to sell 1-2 $1.5 USA CC's, they are selling to others who are reselling them.
I've seen a stack 10k-50k /gumbled (USA, CAN, EUR...etc) go for $5k.
1111  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Anyone else concerned about global hashrate? on: August 22, 2011, 04:43:23 AM
Just want to clear a few things up with botnets.

Most of the bigger botnets (anything more than 50k) probably don't use IRC.

In-fact, they probably are just compiled infections that run a miner pointing to a specific worker.
In which the pool owner can simply just delete that worker.

The best shot of a botnet owner (with more than 10k zombies) would be to create a private pool for all their infections to mine at.

I'm either high or tired.
1113  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcoin forks - Create new forum board? on: August 22, 2011, 03:47:27 AM
I'd prefer that these alternate block chains use different forums, though I would consider creating a section if a really popular alternate block chain appeared. Ixcoin and Namecoin are not there yet, and I'm convinced that at least Ixcoin will disappear soon.
If an alternative were to come up to become popular, why not just make a thread and sticky it.
Having a section just for a fork would almost be like an insult (for how I see it, personally) to the Bitcoin economy.
1114  Other / Meta / Re: Forum Suggestion: SMF Trader Plugin on: August 22, 2011, 03:41:22 AM
I don't think there will be any mods on this forum.
There are too many complaints about the forums being to slow.

Also, if anything happened on the forum theymos would have to dispute it.
1115  Other / Meta / Re: bitcointalk.org SO SLOW on: August 22, 2011, 03:20:48 AM
Doing so much as a simple backup would easily tank the server (take it the database is 10-20Gb) for a few minutes.

If you need help with hosting, which I'm sure you don't, but you can ask me (via PM).
If you'd like to e-mail me, you can probably just check my profile.
I know a good ISP that would be more than happy to work with you in hosting.

I'll grab the torrent and verify the files match, and then add it. Thanks!
Yeah, I'm literally 15 minutes in any direction to the nearest gas station...so the connection may be a little slow.

I'm very nooby when it comes to torrents, but I think I've got something setup.
