1661  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: S7 miner one board hotter than the others, why? on: May 25, 2017, 03:22:10 PM
If you clean it and it still runs a little hot thats not really a big deal. Unless it is throwing a ton of hardware errors or crashing all the time just let it run a little hotter.

Step 1: Ask in the proper forum section.
1663  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: My first mining rig. Is my setup all right? on: May 25, 2017, 03:18:39 PM
It is setup wrong in that your hardware will not mine bitcoins. This is the BITCOIN HARDWARE section.
1664  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Antminer s3 b5 for 40$ on: May 25, 2017, 03:16:48 PM
No you didnt calculate it incorrectly. You are talking about a years old piece of obsolete mining equipment. You will lose money running it unless the power is 100% free. Even then you wont make enough money with to bother with the heat and noise.
1665  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Bitcoin.com Pool, 110% PPS? on: May 24, 2017, 10:45:06 PM
PS. While I can say that pointing your ASIC miners to their pool is highly likely *safe*, I can not vouch for any of their cloud mining contracts today as it's unclear from where the hash rate comes from. If they re-sell hash rate bought from somebody else, they are just the middlemen, and you may end up overpaying. In complex ownership structures, it's also difficult to have a clear picture of the asset at hand - who owns what, who bears responsibility to provide support, is the support offered by bitcoin.com or someone else, and if so, does bitcoin.com pool open support tickets to another entity, possibly resulting in very lengthy support delivery times? I have no answers to any of that.

Their own press release states that they are partnered with North Americas largest bitcoin mine to provide hash rate including posting pictures of the main bitcoin.com developer in said mine.
1666  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Regarding risers and PSU cables on: May 24, 2017, 10:17:00 PM
if you want to use multiple PSU,, you shouldn't mix 1 PSU for riser and another for GPU.

GPU+Riser should be powered by same PSU, as there are electrical power connection between PCIE power socket on GPU and PCIE slot in Riser.
Power connector on riser is not to power up riser, it is to power up gpu via pcie-slot 1x connector which spec is allow gpu to take up to 72w from these pcie 1x slot, so sata powered riser is should not be allowed

splitting multiple psu between gpu and mothherboard is fine, splitting multiple psu between (gpu+riser) and another (gpu+riser) is fine too

I have a few hundred rigs that all call bullshit on this. All of them are setup with the risers powered off of molex to sata power on the atx power supply and all of the video cards off of high end server PSUs. Out of thousands and thousands of connectors I have never seen one have problems.
1667  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: ASRock H81 PRO BTC R2.0 IN STOCK on: May 24, 2017, 10:12:06 PM
I don't get it can't they just manufacture a new batch of these? A month ago the main local distributor of PC parts here received a large shipment of these and they disappeared within half a day. People were coming out of the store carrying 3-5 of these. It's crazy why won't they just make more? They'll make a killing no matter how many they manufacture they'll all be bought out.

1. Because they are old, outdated 1150 boards. As a matter of fact the H81 chipset is the lowest end of all the 1150 boards.
2. Its becoming very hard to even find 1150 chips new anymore.
3. They have not been in production for a long time and they would have to retool an entire production line for some old, outdated boards.
4. There are plenty of boards out there to mine on besides these, ones that are still in production.

I mean it seems pretty obvious why they dont make them anymore.
1668  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Can i dig on a router TL-WR1043ND v1 only ? on: May 24, 2017, 10:04:24 PM
Why would you even bother? In a couple decades you might even have enough satoshis to cash out of your pool
1669  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining in Hot and Humid Weather (Cooling Costs) on: May 24, 2017, 10:03:23 PM
If you have to use anything other than fans and/or swamp cooling (not possible with your humidity) you have already lost.
1670  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Antminer S7 now officially obsolete? on: May 24, 2017, 09:57:57 PM
I was looking at possibilities for a datacenter buildout, not trying to colo with anyone
1671  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: OMG (from Wikipedia) on: May 24, 2017, 06:27:19 PM
Unlike ASICs which you just plop down, plug in a cable or two and let them one away, you actually have to set up a mining rig in most cases and regularly make sure it isn't malfunctioning. These days it seems people are lazy and just want plug and play profit with Antminers and such. It's not terrible but i like to have a semblance of effort in my rigs and in other people's.

That is such a strange attitude to have. People that want reliable gear are lazy and you hope that you have problems so you have to work on them?

I am thinking you are in the minority when it comes to thinking like this. You actively WANT less profit because you want your rigs to have downtime. That just seems monumentally stupid.
1672  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Avalon pursuing 7nm technology on: May 24, 2017, 05:13:24 PM
Noticed this lil tidbit in a press release announcing Proof of Existence being acquired by Canaan.

Quote
Canaan, known for it’s ASIC design and manufacturing expertise has recently closed a round of financing for $43 Million to support its upcoming 7nm designs and to enter the AI market with its first Knowledge Processing Unit (KPU).

1673  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Antminer S7 now officially obsolete? on: May 24, 2017, 04:59:30 PM
However, wind power is NOT all that cheap (it's amazing how much I picked up about wind generators from living less than a mile from the Clipper Windpower factory and talking to employees and ex-employees).

It's JUST starting to get competative with coal generation, due mostly to the EPA "war on coal" over the last couple decades, and is close to natural-gas fired plants.
It DOES beat oil, but oil for power generation has been dying for decades in the US due to natural gas stomping it into the ground on cost since the first Arab Oil Embargo.

When I was researching power prices I found some areas in Texas that had so much wind power they practically had to give it away (3-4 cent on average). This was about 18 months ago. I guess it depends where you are looking and how close you are to a giant wind farm.
1674  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Problem with antminer s7 on: May 24, 2017, 03:26:52 PM
Well you have them overclocked for starters, thats just asking for dead hash boards.

Looks like you managed to kill 2 of the 3 hashing boards. You wont be able to recover them yourself.
1675  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Server PSU or ATX PSU? on: May 23, 2017, 10:26:06 PM
ATX
- its more expensive
- not designed for 24/7 (but its not a problem anyway just wear off faster)
+ its more safe (more protection, covered by 80+ standard, designed to work on wide working condition) <-- this is wrong. Servers PSUs are covered by the same standards and are almost assuredly more efficient as a general rule.
+ covered by long warranty
+ more availability
+ does not need custom breakout (all ATX standard)) <-- You do not need to buy an expensive breakout board. You can build one your self with an $8 soldering iron and some PCI-E pigtails.

Server
- less safe (less protection feature than higrade ATX, had strict working condition requirement) <--Not true, server PSUs in general have BETTER protection circuitry because they are powering devices worth tens of thousands of dollars.
- warranty ? (its complicated to claim RMA)
- less availability
- need custom breakout cables
+ designed for 24/7 with server grade room condition (temp and humidity) <-- in my experience server PSUs can handle much greater heat loads. I have even had servers PSUs sprayed down by a damaged misting system that did nothing but shut off until they dried out.
+ cheaper

1676  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: May 23, 2017, 08:46:54 PM
The S9/T9 are not as heat resistant as the S7s were. In my opinion they are pretty sensitive to the heat as they have to run the chips so hot by default.

1678  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Mining Container by Polivka GmbH on: May 23, 2017, 05:21:41 PM
I thought the Avalon 7's were also spec'd at an operating temp of 0 - 40 deg C? If true would it not be risky at firing up the miners at -20 deg C?

I know this is a very limited scenario, but it is a scenario I am also designing for. Since it might affect the use case of these containers I am curious to get help on optimal way to deal it it.

The Avalons will die just like any other miner if you try to start them in extreme cold.

It wouldnt be hard to plumb in a large heater that is only used in emergencies to heat up the container.
1679  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: May 23, 2017, 05:18:59 PM
The problem with the S9 is not the fan speed. It is running the chips at such low voltages to get the gaudy efficiency numbers that they ride on the cusp of failure at all times. Hence why the T9 has less chips running at a higher voltage and is much more stable and less prone to failure.
1680  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Can't using rx470 with 280x on: May 23, 2017, 05:16:29 PM
Disclaimer: Please post this in the alt coin section, this is for bitcoin mining only.

I know with simplemining and ethOS they do not recommend mixing card generations due to different drivers they each use. Not too sure on windows but it sounds like a driver conflict. Have you checked in device manager to make sure Windows isnt raising any red flags about the drivers?
